Let's taco 'bout how great this place is! We had heard nacional 27 has free salsa classes on Wednesday's so my fiancé and I decided to check it out. So Tallboy Taco and Nacional 27 are located in the same place, they're just separated by a wall. I don't know if it's the same ownership but I do know they use the same kitchen. Anyways, we arrived around 6:15 and it wasn't packed. We were automatically seated and our waitress, Laura, came over right away and introduced herself and told us of the specials for the evening. One thing we learned is that Tallboy Taco does not serve San Pellegrino or Perrier in a closed 8 or 12 oz bottle but that's to be expected considering it's primarily a drinking place.
Appetizer: spinach and avocado salad- so delicious! The spicy pecans will blow your mind- they taste sweet but they are actually coated in spices. An amazing compliment to their salad!i
Main entree: I ordered the three tacos that comes with rice and beans. I ordered the chicken tinga, something cowboy (supposedly slow cooked for 12 hours) and shrimp taco. My fiancé ordered the skirt steak. I love the shrimp taco the most even though there was barely any shrimp on comparison to the meat servings in the chicken and steak. The chicken is extremely savory but it was slightly too spicy for my liking. The steak was my least favorite but my fiancée favorite. He said it was very well cooked and flavorful. He said he would get the steak next time. It's honestly personal preference. The rice and beans were okay- nothing crazy but complimented the tacos. My fiancée skirt steak was so good- omgosh. First of all, it was juicy which I really appreciated because most places where I've eaten skirt steak, the steak has been so dry I needed like 2 servings of ranch sauce to get through the meal. Secondly, it was so flavorful! By far my favorite thing here!! Highly recommend!!
Dessert- ice cream taco. What a specTACOlar dessert! It's super small but if you're looking for something small that you can share with your date, then this is the perfect "let me feed my way to your heart" food!
Service: we really loved Laura. She was so attentive. She didn't have to stop by and ask us how we're doing, she would just walk by, check our drinks or keep an eye out for empty dishes. She checked in on us but she also gave us our privacy. One thing I noticed is that she went to the register in the back to drink some water- she did not use her phone and came right back out to check her tables. It's very rare and hard to find waitresses that don't seize that few minutes to themselves to check their phone. I just cannot praise her enough for how quick and responsive she is.
We ended our night with complimentary bachata and salsa lessons. Every Wednesday Nacional 27 hosts Havana Nights from 7:30-8:30. They also have a special menu at this time that includes chips/guacamole, plantain croquetas, signature entrees and choice of our signature N27 Mojito or Margarita- all for only $27.27! Can you say amazing deal?!? My fiancé and I have been meaning to go and we were sooo happy we could partake in such an event! read more
