Those with curly hair: just don't. I really tried to like this haircut but it's awful. I have 3b/3c curls. I went in for a curly cut to attempt to even out my layers and have a more cohesive shape. As a precaution I made sure I booked one of the more expensive more experienced stylists. I came out with it even worse than it was before and about 3 inches of length lost (after explaining I was comfortable with up to an inch taken off and that I'm nearly two years into growing out from a pixie cut). My hair was brushed out completely for the cutting process, which I've never experienced before with past curly cuts. I decided to trust the process but was incredibly nervous at that point. Then the "styling" portion of my service included a wash, condition, and about a couple of pumps of leave in scrunched gingerly into my hair. No sectioning or combing to define individual curls. I expect much more for a $130 service. Back in the chair once dry, I asked my stylist to fix the shape as I could tell already this was not my best cut. My hair was looking frizzy and undefined. I left hoping for the best, but due to the lack of styling I couldn't tell what it would really end up looking like until I went home to style it myself. Even after doing my own styling, it was not working for me. The result is uneven, bulky in the wrong places, with bangs cut too thick. The entire service lasted less than an hour including waiting after I arrived. I'm devastated, embarrassed, and hope curly girls seriously consider another salon. I loved my hair, and it took me a long time to get to that place. Now I feel like im 12 years old again, just wishing my hair could be straight like everyone else. I've been coming here for years now, but after the events of the recent worker strike I will no longer give Heather or this business my money. If you are unaware, please read into the strike. The workers brought to light issues and asked for improvements to the working conditions. All the striking employees were banned from the salon and need to find new work. Issues included pest problems, sanitary problems, misgendering of employees (while they promote being a queer safe place), concerns for shop cat Biggie, and more. read more

My family and I have been clients at Talking Headz since 2013. We mostly employ Shannon for cuts and color, however, she has been unavailable for most of the summer. Recently, haircuts were provided to my husband and me by Jesse. We liked Jessie very much, and the haircuts were good yet uncomplicated. The problem was the cost. In his 70s my husband is balding with very little hair. His cut was $55!Mine was $75 for a shaping of a short shaggy style that stops at my chin. These were both dry cuts - no shampoo or blow dry included. We were shocked and very upset. What has happened to that once-great salon? The haircutters themselves are very good. I have had the same woman there cut my hair for a few years, and I have always been happy with her work. That said, my hair is pretty basic, so I am already paying a lot for what I am getting. My hair is not that long, but they still charge me for a long cut, and I have paid more than I probably should because I liked the stylist and didn't want to have to find another. Last time there, I got my mustache and beard trimmed there for the first time. The blonde woman at the desk charged me an extra $42 for a trim done with an electric razor and finished with scissors. FFS, I should at least get a hot towel for that much money. I felt completely taken advantage of. I could hear the stylist pleading " his hair is not really that long..." when she saw how much I was getting charged Including the $20 tip, I shelled out $107 for pretty basic service. No color. No product applied to my hair. No wash, no blow. Just a basic cut, nothing fancy. Not that much time in the chair. I hope the blonde woman reads this and understands that she is the reason I won't be back. I wonder how many times she has screwed over the stylists there by driving people away with her greedy b.s. I get that stuff is expensive. But we are on the verge of another Trump term largely due to greedy businesses gouging their clients "because everyone else is doing it" and because they think they can get away with it and won't be noticed in the crowd of price-gougers. I was looking for a stylist in West Philly that could do the basics, a good maintenance cut to trim split ends without trying to push me to do something stylish or new. A few people recommended Talking Headz, so I checked it out. So glad I did!!! Jensen gave me a fabulous trim and the price was very reasonable I'm very "no frills" with my hair. I like my natural color and texture, and I just need someone to keep it looking healthy and happy. She did exactly that!! I had a lot of split ends (I haven't gotten a trim in like 5 months), and before chopping everything that needed to come off, Jensen made sure to check in and confirm with me that I was okay with the length that had to go. My hair looks so healthy and refreshed. Would recommend this stylist in particular, and this salon in general. Great customer service and chill atmosphere. read more

I got the worst haircut of my life. Like, hide indoors, nobody perceive me, hack job - and for a whopping $50 plus tips, I came away feeling heartbroken. The worst part is, I communicated clearly about what I wanted throughout the cut. I'd brought a list of traits I wanted and didn't, along with several pictures, and even a drawing showing I didn't want my hair tapered in any way on the sides. I specifically said "no mullet" 3 times throughout the cut. This was my first cut in 3 years, going from diaphragm-length to my shoulders, and I was so nervous. I'd called to confirm the appointment early that morning but they later said they were having phone troubles, so I'd been moved from Allison to a new stylist last-minute who was supposedly still tier-2 (more experience). She took out a clunky razor that she ended up using for the whole cut. I had to stop her twice in the middle of my cut and ask "can I not have my bangs touched?" "Can I keep the length in the front?" And rather than listening to me, she just asked if she could make my bangs thicker, or frame my face. She ended up going ahead with what she was doing and chopping off the length of both. I had noticeable, inch-long patches of bangs, asymmetry in all the wrong ways, and the shag I had so wanted was unarguably a mullet. I reached out to the stylist on IG a couple days later about it and was promised a full refund by her and her manager, but I was only compensated for the cut; my tip wasn't returned. I came to Talking Headz because of the reviews, so I feel I should share mine. This cut had me absolutely miserable... I'm angry that they kept my tip after ruining my hair, as well. Hair, for many, is a central means of expression. My hair was really important to me, and now I had to have it cut to a pixie by someone else after the damage. I miss my long hair, and I'm so bitter. Hopefully, you can cross-reference my experience with the others, find the stylists there who have a good track record, and make a realistic decision for yourself - or that you don't feel too particular about the outcome of your style. read more

When I lived in West Philly---this was a staple and I just kind of took advantage of having a great haircut all the time -- I didn't know what a bad haircut was!! Then I moved and went to another place and got a bad haircut for like twice the price in a trendy "fancy" salon. I needed another haircut but I live further away from Talking Headz--well it was well worth the Septa trip there. Colleen was my stylist and she listened to what I wanted then talked about what she was able to do for me and we had a very productive back and forth about the haircut. She is great at listening to my concerns and providing great feedback. My haircut was awesome! So happy with it! Really friendly and accepting atmosphere. This place is a staple for the Philly LGBTQ community, so I decided to give it a try in March. I ended up getting a lob cut with magenta ombré. This is my first time getting my hair dyed, and my natural hair is pitch black, but the results were great. They truly lived up to their reputation of being respectful and using correct pronouns in a nonjudgemental environment. I'm giving it four stars however, because it wasn't really for me. The lack of diversity in their crew is what keeps my review from being 5 stars. Thick Asian hair like mine has to be treated a little differently than the hair of clients they're probably used to seeing (generally white femme punks). She's repeatedly given me my dream-hair-du-jour and usually sends me home with extra color to do my own touch ups. No pressure to buy a million products, no "does your boyfriend know you're shaving half your head?" Just friendly folks and pure raw talent. If you're looking for the frills of a luxe center city salon, this is probably not your place. I was trying to protect the staff by not coming in when I was potentially sick but ended up having to pay almost the whole price of a haircut to not be seen. I have been a regular customer of Talking Headz for years, and i have usually been very satisfied. I have had two great stylists, Cali and Lauren. But my most recent haircut was absolutely terrible! I have a pixie cut (or HAD a pixie cut), but the stylist simply chopped off the ends and left no structure, no shape, no plan. She was very unfriendly, and was more focused on my slipping mask than on my hair. I'm not sure what she was thinking, although I kept saying that I wanted a pixie, a wispy look. I have tried to trim it on my own, but it looks terrible. The worst haircut I have ever had, anywhere. And then, I had to pay $50, a $14 increase from my last cut. That was a complete shock! This is best place for a family cut. Our whole family goes here and loves it! In fact every time my 3 1/2 year old walks by she wants to go in to get her hair cut and washed! (And let me tell you hair washing for a 3 year old can be a trying experience at home!) They are so great with kids, my daughter and I go at the same time and Heather colors my hair then cuts hers and lets her "help" with my rinse out. There are lots of kids toys to play with while you wait and they ask if you want coffee! (and ask if your kid can have a lollypop). And then I return the next time and its ehhhhh. I have short-medium, wavy/curly hair which can be a mess and deceptive to cut and for those other guys out there with similar hair, you know that you can walk out of a haircut and think it looks good only for it to curl up the next day and be disappointed. Talking Headz is my savior. I have never been to a hairstylist where I am consistently SO HAPPY with my haircut. They can cut my hair the way I ask, they know about contemporary/hip hair styles, etc. I get my hair cut by Callie (or Kali? Calie? I don't know how to spell her name, only pronounce it). First time/last time at this chop-shop. I really wanted to like this place, but I got a woman that did NOT listen to me when I told her what I wanted. I brought in a picture, explained exactly how I wanted things done, and then she went and did her own thing. I'd told her not to cut off more than the dead ends: she took off at least 4 inches (my hair was not in need of such a treatment). She cut short layers into my hair and now I look like Joan Jett (which isn't bad if I had straight hair- but I have wavy hair and that cut on me just looks awful). I paid $60 for someone to cut MONTHS off my hair, when I asked her not to...I also had to ask her to even out the sides (the left side was longer than the right) twice...she didn't seem to notice. Allison cut and colored my hair. I came in wanting my hair a lot shorter and lighter. The problem was I wasn't exactly sure of what I wanted, I just knew I wanted something different. Allison rolled with it while I changed my mind several times w the cut. I ended up asking for shorter bangs and regretting it; I also thought my hair wasn't as light as I wanted (this is after I had box dyed it myself previously and I was warned it could be and issue). Then I looked it in the sunlight and got to see the color in the light and I realized was happy with it. All in all it's a good cut, good color, and these are the bangs I asked for. I got my hair cut here in February and I am still growing out the terrible cut I got. I chose to go to this place because they claim they know about curly hair, and I even took the precaution of choosing a level 2 stylist or whatever they're called. She was very nice but thinned my hair SO much and by the time I realized how much had been taken out it was too late. It looked good at the end I guess because she put some volumizing stuff in it but I had no curls. Just some wave from her styling technique. I really noticed how thin my hair was after my first wash. It's been very sad for me and I haven't been able to wear my hair down at all. My curls have been limp and lifeless and impossible to work with since then. It's going to take another year to grow out the damage. Good place for punk cuts I guess but for a curly shag... never again. read more

I am so disappointed to have to leave such a low review. I came here for a cut and color. My hair is naturally a reddish brown, and I don't like the red. I normally go darker on my own, but I decided to go blonde and figured I should do it through a "real"stylist. I learned that that's not really necessary. The stylist asked me why I wanted to go blonde. I explained that I don't like that my hair goes red. I showed her pictures of what I wanted and said "the red needs to be gone." She confirmed with me: "ash blonde." Yes, exactly. I had only gotten my hair cut here before so I thought you could only pay in cash. I spoke with her about my color/cut options because I wasn't sure I'd have enough cash for everything. I decide on just the color so I have enough for a fair tip. She goes back to get the color stuff started, and I see the credit card machine. The woman at the front explains to me that they take card for color appointments. I explain to the stylist that if I can pay with card, I'd like to do both color and cut. She goes on about how she was debating telling me that they accept card (why would you debate this?) and oh, well she'll just do the cut after the color. This should have been my miscommunication red flag. We go through the hours long process and my hair comes out brassy blonde. Then she gives me "layers" that don't match the style I came in with. My hair cut looks like a cross between a 1980s rockstar and a five year old who took straight chunks out of their own hair. I wear it in a ponytail every day to conceal this. Most people were reluctant to comment on my hair change because to them it must have looked like a cheap mistake. I kid you not, the first comment someone made was "I like that there's still red in it." The stylist 100% missed the mark, and I essentially paid $100 for a lazy bleach job. I also asked the stylist about products to use to minimize dryness and damage. She said "you don't have to worry about that." This has proven untrue as my hair is super dry all of the time. She said she'd share her favorite product with me but then never did, so I did what any person would: took to Google. Through Google I have not only learned how to keep my hair oiled and healthy, but I have also learned how to get my hair ash blonde on my own! All its taken is a $10 product from Walgreen's to get what I paid $100 here to try to get. My friends have remarked on how much better my hair looks now that I'm toning it on my own. Maybe this all could have been avoided if the stylist communicated to me that getting the shade I want might take multiple appointments and work through the process and cost with me. But two star communication led to this two star experience and two star review. This experience has at least empowered me to handle going blonde on my own in the future. I'm a simple lady, rarely wear makeup, dress in jeans and a t-shirt everyday, but I like to take care of myself. So I get my hair cut and colored from time to time. Out of the 4 places I visited this year talking headz is by far the best. My hair is naturally ombre and I don't think stylists these days get that I don't want to walk away with ombre hair when I leave the salon. My stylist at talking heads did. She listened to my request and came back with a few color options and I went with her recommendation. She was friendly and sweet. And I was in and out in an hour and 15 minutes, totally reasonable. Talking Headz is, hands down, the best hair salon I have ever been to. I have long, curly/wavy/frizzy/straight/Idon'tevenknow hair that has been completely unmanageable in the past, to the point where some hair stylists have literally looked at my hair and said, "I have no idea how to deal with this." I've gone everywhere from luxury salons to run-of-the-mill chain hairdressers, and I have never been happy with my hair. Until Talking Headz. Talking Headz is everything one could want in a salon and more. Calling to make an appointment is always a pleasant experience, and the location is a short, beautiful walk down on Baltimore from Penn's campus. I've been there twice now, and only had to wait for 5 minutes max, and even so, in a super cool waiting area, full of beverages, magazines, cats!, and awesome art to admire. The staff here are all incredibly kind too, and super open and interesting, if you decide to talk to them. The first time I went to Talking Headz, I had no idea what I was looking for regarding my hair. I just asked for "a change -- but not too drastic, and something I can manage." I sadly don't remember my stylists' names (for either time,) but the women worked with me every step of the way, showing and telling me exactly what they were going to do and asking me for approval before going through with it. The second time I went, I knew exactly what I wanted, described it, and got exactly what I asked for. Both times I ended up with an awesome, personalized cut that I could actually manage(!) and that I got many compliments for. The best part, though: you get this amazing, professional quality new hair cut for only ~$25! That's insane! I can't recommend Talking Headz enough, for anyone of any background looking for new sweet hair in a cool setting. read more

Bobby Joe did a terrible job. I was trying to be okay with it at the time, and I wish I had said something. Something like "what the fuck". I am inspired to write my first Yelp review after an amazing experience here. Heather and the team at Talking Headz did an incredible job accommodating my needs. I had been twice before and liked my haircut, but my latest visit was exceptional. First off, I am not your typical customer. As a 23 year old undergoing chemo, my request was to try to make the wig I had look a little edgier (the American Cancer Society doesn't have a lot of current styles or cool colors). I was really sold on dyeing it grey. Heather was so nice and helpful in making this happen. The person who works the front desk- I am sorry I did not catch her name- also came in and chipped in. The staff is friendly and helpful, they have a cute cat to pet while you're waiting, and there's free water, coffee, and tea. I used to emotionally prepare myself for hair cuts. I'm a guy with curly brown hair and it seems like I usually leave with a cut that's too short or buzzed feeling. It's traumatizing. I moved to Philly in June after a month long road trip camping across the USA. I was wooly and need a trim badly. Made an appointment at Talking Headz (just before they moved 1 block closer to me!) and got the most satisfying haircut. RIANNE was my person - I showed her a picture of me that I liked and she sort of got that look... only she did better! Nailed it. I went back 6 weeks later and she nailed it again. Consistency is the key. She crushed it. New place is huge and awesome. That fat cat that lives there is cool. The whole vibe is 90's grunge punk rock. It's a slice of Seattle in West Philly. I cheated on my hairstylist of five years. OMG, now that I've said it I feel so guilty. But, I'm going to just come right out and say it, this might turn into a long-term love affair. Or a new commitment. My hair was in bad shape (like I-was-desperate-to-trim-my-bangs-while-I-was-in-Africa-and-had-to-resort-to-surgical-scissors-to-cut-them bad shape). Overall my hair is easy and straight but it looked tired and old. In less than a half hour Carolyn turned me in to one of those annoying people that shakes their hair out and strikes poses in front of every mirror or store window they pass. For 25 bucks. I called that afternoon when I looked in a mirror and realized how awful I looked and they were able to get me in that same evening. They only take cash so come prepared. I had a wonderful wonderful experience at Talking Headz today! It definitely deserves all five of those stars it has! I have had the same haircut since I was 11 and have only had my hair cut by two people ever. When I went into Talking Headz, I asked to have my haircut maintained just a couple inches shorter. They did that, but did that so much better than my previous hairdressers. My hair now has a lot more lift at the roots and less poof at the bottom. And for only $26 (before tip)! All of the people working at Talking Headz are so warm and personable. They were all chatting up a storm with their respective customers.
