First off, the place feels big. Has nice calming music playing in the background so it's a pleasant experience visiting and even sitting in the chair for some time. The wash was about the same length of time as a wash from other places here in Chinatown, but somehow it was significantly more enjoyable. The people here know what they're doing, and my scalp feels much better than it did before, and I didn't even know if was feeling anything before. Cut was ~30 minutes, and $28 + tip. Overall, it's on the pricier end of what I've experienced so far in Chinatown, although not by much. However, the quality of the cut was much better than others. In other places, it feels a bit more rushed or cursory, but I felt like I was getting focused attention on my cut. He spent a lot of it actually in touch up and layering, which was good attention to detail. Honestly one of the best cuts I've gotten in Chinatown. Definitely beats out in quality over other mainstays like Kevin's, but at a slightly higher price point.

As she had already ruined my hair on one side, I bit my tongue as she made the other side match it. I was absolutely furious, but what can a stylist do once they've taken too much off? Absolutely nothing. Now I am stuck with a haircut where my deformed ear is visible for the whole world to see because the stylist decided to give me that haircut that she wanted to give me instead of the one that I asked for. I paid for my haircut with a card and departed in a polite manner, but the moment I hit the sidewalk, I could no nothing but scream profanity as the realization that I couldn't cover my deformed ear kicked in. Now I am not only out $18, but I am stuck with a haircut which leaves me open to yet more questions along the lines of "What's wrong with your ear?" [Edit, I called the place and she offered me a refund, but this doesn't undo the damage she did to my personal appearance. I'll take the refund, but this review stands.] I grew the sides of my hair longer specifically to hide that ear, and the stylist decided that she knew better than me where my haircut was concerned, and forced her personal preferences onto my head. With the mess she left me with, with my deformed ear exposed, I might just shave my head instead of putting up with this terrible thing she did to my head. I am so humiliated that I don't even want to be seen in public looking like this. I went in feeling good about myself and looking forward to the haircut I asked for, and I left with my self-esteem in the gutter. I get upset every time I catch my refection and see what she did to my appearance. I can't go out looking like this. In short, she was absolutely incompetent & unprofessional in providing a haircut according to the very simple instructions I gave her. She shouldn't be permitted to cut hair, and if she has a state license for cutting hair, it should be revoked. The only reason she's getting one star is because I can't give her zero stars. Attached to this review, you'll see two photos detailing how she couldn't even manage to cut my hair evenly. I could have gotten a better cut from a landscaper with a weed-whacker. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and no apology or refund can do undo the damage. I'll have to wear a hat until my hair covers my deformed ear again. Thanks to a stylist who doesn't listen, I get to wear a hat to cover my deformed ear now. As a craftsman and a business owner, I can tell you that this is not how a professional renders a service to a client. **Update** I spoke with the stylist on the phone a short time ago about the refund she told me she would give me, and instead of telling me when I could come down & get it, she began making all manner of excuses as to why she shouldn't refund my money. This is the kind of experience you can expect to have with this hair stylist: first she will ruin your hair, then she will justify her poor work and back-peddle out of any refund she's already offered you. I should have looked at the other 1-Star reviews of this place, because it seems that those people all had a very similar experience to mine. As a small business owner myself, I'm very enthusiastic about supporting small businesses, but not if they're run by incompetent, unprofessional people who refuse to accept accountability for the damage they do, or offer fair compensation in return for those damages.

Mockingbird's run by a lovely lady and her comparably lovely cohort. What sets their salon aside from the scores of others that populate the Philadelphia landscape is that (other than providing you with one of many of several varieties of coffees of your choice and delicious pastries not unlike one of the many cafes in the neighborhood. That is, except for the one that's obviously run by some questionable characters...you know the one I'm talking about) they care about giving great service, stopping at nothing to ensure their clients' satisfaction, and they top it off with a healthy dose of good conversation. My stylist Michelle (Heidi's lovely cohort) has been styling my hair since I moved up to Philly (I've actually flown back up here once or twice for a trim when I desperately needed a haircut). Five years ago, she did such a great job removing my 'pone' (Heidi's word for a pony tail), I knew she was the hair stylist of my dreams (I've actually never had a dream with a hair stylist in it unfortunately or maybe fortunately). They have great prices, too. So check em out. You'll get a good haircut at a really reasonable price and, if you luck out, some coffee and pastries, too. read more

This place is so rad. I came in with a box dye mishap and needed to get it fixed. I was nervous because I had never gotten it colored at a salon before, but Jenna was very reassuring and she was AMAZING! It is the perfect color. I love my hair. The stylists here all seem great, I saw many happy customers as I was there. I'll definitely be returning to Jenna for my future hair needs. She's great to chat with as well! Colette, the receptionist offered me coffee as I walked in which was very nice and made me feel relaxed. The vibe was so friendly. The salon itself is peaceful and beautifully decorated, and the conversation is flowing and fun. The prices seem right for the quality of what they are offering. I followed Mo Hayes from a previous Salon and I am so happy I did!! I've been getting my hair done by Mo for about 2 years now, and I am so pleased she is at Mockingbird. The salon atmosphere is fantastic, parking is never a problem, and the service is first rate. She takes time to listen to what you are looking for, whether it's a quick bang cut or a full color change. Even if I'm unsure with what I want, she always seems to know, picks the right color tones, and does a phenomenal job with cuts and style. My hair is long and brown and the color always comes out perfect and the cut always looks fantastic. I would highly recommend Mockingbird. "Hey man, so...uh, where do you get your hair cut?" In my experience, that's not really a question dudes regularly ask other dudes. So, when another guy inquires about your haircut, it can usually be interpreted as a pretty high compliment. Mo has been cutting my hair since I moved to Philly over two years ago, and in that time I've had a handful of guys ask me where I get my hair cut. (Which, you know, is a pretty awesome feeling.) So I tell them to go to Mockingbird Salon and ask for Mo. The salon itself is in a great location and extremely inviting. The entire staff is friendly and personable. The rates are totally reasonable. I recommend Mockingbird (and Mo) to anyone who asks. read more

I will start by saying that I absolutely love this salon. It's clean, innovative, and refreshing. I've never had a bad experience until recently. I'm giving it 3 stars because of my experience last week with my hairdresser Melissa/Marissa? While the cut itself was great, her attitude did not fit the salon. She seemed annoyed when I would ask questions and made me feel like I shouldn't have been there, which is not how you want to feel when you're paying for a service. Michelle is fantastic. If you're looking for great color that will get you stopped on the street, pay her a visit. She understands the chemistry behind color and is flawless. I also appreciate her honesty. She doesn't agree with me all the time and it proves to me that she's looking out for me. I'm a tough customer. I don't want a traditional hair cut or color and I want every part of my hair cut/color experience to be professional. I get my hair done by Justin, I did a total transformation from long hair to short hair and he totally killed it! I looked up LGBT friendly salons, and this came up over and over so I took a chance and I was NOT disappointed. I felt so comfortable and now I get highlights by Justin too. the whole salon staff is friendly and welcoming and it feels like they just know you. also there's a dog so basically it's the best place ever. LOVE this salon. To be honest I made my first appointment there based on looking in the window. I walked by it every day on the way home from work and thought it was adorable (and my childhood dog was a shiba, so it helped that the owner had one) I really love the atmosphere in the salon and Jenna cut my hair really well. I should have been put off by the cheapest of cheap decor on the walls of this place (only vinyl side paneling would look worse), but I got sucked in by the media reviews, which is probably where the salon's money really goes. God knows they didn't spend it on the front door, which is badly in need of replacement and would be more suited to a hovel in an Oklahoma trailer park. They take your payment details so you can be put on a never-ending billing cycle and you're locked into an appointment schedule of every 4 weeks, or 6 weeks, never mind that hair only grows half an inch per month. I showed the stylist the haircut I wanted, and she proceeded to give me an approximation of the style, but in the process cut FAR TOO MUCH of my hair off (Why? Is it because I'm a man, and all men are supposed to have regulation-short haircuts that are boring?) Now I'm going to have to wait 6 months for my hair to grow back, and in the meantime, I look STUPID, and my entire summer has just been wrecked before it even started. DON'T GO HERE, unless all you're looking for is a Manic Panic-style dye job, because it seems that is what they're known for. You've been warned!!!!!!

My hair looks like a mop -- like a BUSH... there is no style, no look, no clean ends... it's a nightmare. When it was wet, it looked halfway decent, but when it dried, it looked like a FRIZZY MESS, as if it hadn't been cut at all. This salon has an attitude like it's God's gift; for the kind of money they're charging, you should be getting one of the best haircuts in Philadelphia, but I got one of the worst. The owner of the salon is an offensive, self-important woman who you get the vibe from that behind the scenes she manages using a reign of terror. All the stylists seemed genuinely petrified of her. I immediately got the feeling walking in that there was a crazy power imbalance going on. Run, don't walk away from this salon; Philadelphia has better options.

Joey Rose, who is the owner of Rinse, is an absolutely phenomenal cutter and colorist. You cannot get an appointment with him unless you are referred by a current client. He is almost always fully booked. Joey had been cutting my hair for approximately 10 years, (having followed him from another salon before he opened Rinse) and it was never a bad cut. He took my short hair and as it was growing in, it never once looked anything other than perfect and easy to repeat myself. Joey is the only haircutter in my adult life, who told me that my hair would never look bad as it was growing out and he made certain that it never did. At that time, Joey had free rein to cut my hair however he wanted to: I trusted him implicitly. If Joey recommended a product, that is what I used. I drove over 100 miles round trip to have my hair cut. But a few months ago, I decided to cut my mid-back length hair short. The reason for this is because of ongoing medical problems with both of my arms that makes it too difficult to keep long hair. I brought a few photos of cuts that I liked, but Joey had a free hand to style the cut, as I always have because he knew my hair. Joey cut my hair three times as we were bringing the look up shorter and each cut was lovely until the last one. It looked absolutely beautiful when I left the salon, but after I washed it for the first time it was impossible to repeat the look that Joey had given me. It probably would have taken 30 minutes or less for Joey to fix the problem. I sent a text to Joey, that included a photo of my hair. His response was to TERMINATE ME AS A CLIENT, using that I could only come in on a fixed schedule as the cause. The fact that I always made anywhere from 3-4 appointments for my future cuts whenever I was in, and having to also work around the, at least 2 vacations that he takes per year, makes this statement specious. Please keep in mind that I was a client of Joey's for almost 10 years. WHAT I BELIEVE IS THE TRUE REASON that Joey terminated both my husband and myself as clients is because he was not making enough money when we came in. I believe that he wants only clients that are having coloring, or other processes done, as well as cutting and blowouts and spending more than $100 when they were in the salon, for just one person per 4-6 weeks. Summing up: IN MY OPINION, if you can get an appointment with Joey you will have a beautiful haircut, color or whatever process you are having done. But if you want him to keep you as a client, be ready to invest. Or maybe it was because, as the salon owner, he wasn't tipped....

I expected to have to wait for an appointment and was willing to do so but to my surprise they put me in the very next day after I called. yay! It's a little place with only a few stylists; it's cozy and comfortable without being pretentious, that's probably what I loved the most. A lot of tiny salons have such big egos that I feel like I'm not even cool enough to be in there.... Rinse was welcoming and calm. Michele was my stylist and I'll definitely be going to her from now on. I was really just there for a trim and some layers, so nothing too involved but she was giving me recommendations for new things I could try, like some sort of hair straightening/relaxer process that she tried on her own hair and I really appreciated that she wasn't just trying to sell me something.. she was saying that she did it herself and loved it. I feel a little strange sometimes when I'm getting my hair cut because I DON'T like to strike up conversation. It's nothing against anyone, I just really like to sit there and relax and have my moment of quiet while someone plays with my hair. At most salons they make me feel obligated to create small talk but Michele was totally cool and just doing her thing. It was nice to see how the other stylists interacted with their clients, as well. Some girl came in for just a bang trim (which looked awesome, by the way) and she was talking to her stylist about not being able to put her hair up in a bun like she wanted to, and he immediately offered to show her a bunch of styles she could do easily. I liked that. Rinse will be my go-to place from now on. I even told them about all the great reviews on here. Michele said she didn't like to read reviews because seeing a bad one can ruin a day but I swear... I couldn't think of anything bad to say about her ever!
