DON'T GO HERE. Got the worst haircut of my life from stylist Wryn the other day. Does this person know how to cut hair? My hair looks like a mop -- like a BUSH... there is no style, no look, no clean ends... it's a nightmare. When it was wet, it looked halfway decent, but when it dried, it looked like a FRIZZY MESS, as if it hadn't been cut at all. This salon has an attitude like it's God's gift; for the kind of money they're charging, you should be getting one of the best haircuts in Philadelphia, but I got one of the worst. The owner of the salon is an offensive, self-important woman who you get the vibe from that behind the scenes she manages using a reign of terror. All the stylists seemed genuinely petrified of her. I immediately got the feeling walking in that there was a crazy power imbalance going on. Run, don't walk away from this salon; Philadelphia has better options. read more

I was searching for a colorist who was versed in Wella color, and Danielle did not disappoint. She followed my formula, making a few suggestions, which I loved. The salon is adorable and everyone is so friendly and accomodating. I highly recommend Barnet Fair, AND Danielle, but remember, you get what you pay for, so if you're looking for inexpensive, this is not the place for you :-). This was my first time at this salon, so I was a bit nervous. However, Melina was incredibly friendly and immediately put me at ease. I explained what I was looking for--curtain bangs, face-framing layers, and some overall shaping to lighten the weight of my thick, long hair for summer. She totally got it. I didn't even need to show her a reference photo, which has never happened before! She just knew what to do and absolutely nailed it. My hair feels so much lighter and looks amazing. I've been growing out my grey hair for nearly a year and a half so it was time to get rid of some of the old dyed ends and revive my cut. Sami did a great job giving me a shoulder-length bob with layers. She showed me some products to use to bring out my natural waves but I can also blow it out straight. It's actually way more versatile than my longer hair was! Sami was able to integrate the little bit left of my old dyed hair still visible on the ends with my newer grey growth in a way that looks more subtle. I feel like a new person! read more

I really hate to leave this review and have been avoiding it because Josie was so lovely. Also the salon is sooo cute and all the stylists are too. However, Josie cut my hair and cut a huge hole in my brand new $450 extension weft and I had to throw it out and buy new hair. My only other option would have been to cut the mid-back length extension hair to shoulder length to even out the hole, which defeats the point of having the extensions. It was really disappointing. Before I booked the appointment I confirmed with the receptionist that Josie was comfortable cutting extensions and I also confirmed with Josie at the appointment. Also they sold me a super expensive "high absorbent" towel that doesn't absorb anything at all. It's literally like wrapping my hair in a shirt. A regular towel works so much better. With the cost of the haircut + the towel + the wasted extension, the whole thing cost me around $600 basically thrown away. Honestly I wasn't even going to leave a review because I felt bad b/c Josie was so nice and mistakes happen, but today the absorbent towel was dirty, so I used a regular towel and was stunned at how well it worked and how little water was in my hair. I had been kind of wondering why my hair was so wet out of the shower no matter what, and figured the absorbent towel prbly wasn't great, but it didn't hit me until now that a regular towel works THAT much better. I think the towel was around $80. It's unfortunate they would sell something for that price to their customers that doesn't work at all. Again prbly something I wouldn't mention had it not been for the other money wasted after visiting the salon. read more

I haven't been to a hair salon in years because I always find it to be a waste of my time and money. So I've been getting by doing my coloring myself. Figuring I needed a pro to have a look at it, I went in for a trim and color, planning to go back to doing it myself for a while after this, and just work off this base for the next few years. But Barnet Fair was excellent. Great, chilled-out atmosphere. And my stylist, Corin, was fabulous. She knocked the autumnal orange with pink champagne highlights out of the park. Not only did I walk away for the first time in many, many years feeling like my time and money was well spent--but I definitely plan to return. I think I'm done doing my hair myself, finally! My hairdresser Gina, to my friend: is Melissa cheating on me? just tell me, I can handle it. My friend: No, I think her hairs just really long now. I was sad to see my girl Gina leave the hair salon 2 blocks from my apartment, but after a 6 month haircut hiatus, I finally sucked it up and got an uber to old city. (Ubers have a hard time finding this place sometimes apparently so watchout for that). The cocktail they made me was totally worth the ride tho. Fun fact: Barnet Fair is actually just a really good underground cocktail bar disguised as a hair salon. The complimentary hibiscus bitters G&T they whipped up was seriously top notch. But in all seriousness, this new, bright and spacious salon is doing great things (and not just to my split ends). They are hosting lots of events, awesome bold color (my friend has gone several different shades of mermaid hair) and allowing their hairdressers lots of creativity and flexibility and I'm happy to support it. They also have a fun little photo booth for you to take your after-cut photo! I think a cut and blow dry was $50 and she curled it and made it look all nice for a wedding I was going to, even though I was in kind of a rush. I promise to come back before 6 months, Gina. I've recently chopped my shoulder length hair that used to be to my knees up (that Melissa was there for) up to my ears and I cannot stop looking at how amazing I look! Everyone is very friendly and beautiful! They have a liquor cart. If I didn't have to keep my act together that day, I would've made myself a cocktail. Melissa cut my hair. So, I've wanted to dye my hair pink, purple, blue, green, etc. since I was about 14 years old, but I've never been brave enough. When I was a teenager, I wasn't willing to risk the wrath of my super conservative parents. And then I started working and was worried I just wouldn't be seen as professional. So when a time in my life finally came when I had a break from work and could actually dye my hair a fun color, I knew I had to go for it. I had been drooling over Barnet Fair's beautiful Instagram account for months, and so the salon seemed like a natural choice. For unique color, the salon has you book a free consult appointment first, so that you don't have unrealistic expectations, which I think is really great. I'm pretty shy and hopelessly uncool, so I always feel nervous at cool hair places, but everyone at Barnet Fair is so nice, and Josie, one of the owners and the stylist who did my color, is insanely nice and friendly. I really wanted to color my hair without putting a lot of bleach in it, and Josie helped me come up with a plan for a way to put in balyage pink highlights without having to bleach my whole head. And in the end...the color looks seriously amazing. Even my mother, who my friends often describe as Emily Gilmore, to give you perspective, likes it. I've gotten tons of compliments on it, including from strangers on the street, and from a stranger on the train right now as I sat writing this review! Josie also gave me a beautiful cut, and took the time to show me some styling tips to make the cut and color look great after I left the salon. I've been seeing the amazing colorful hues coming out of Barnet Fair since they opened in Old City. Finally took the leap and got a magnificent peacock coloring from Melina last week. The blues, purples, and emeralds are so vibrant and expertly placed. I've had people stop me on the street and tell my my hair was a "work of art". It truly is. Thank you Melina! I never write reviews but felt the need to on this one. This was my first time at Barnet Fair and I couldn't have been more happy with the experience and the service! Comfortable environment / super aesthetically pleasing space - you can tell how much work went into creating this salon. I had my color and cut done by Amy and she absolutely nailed it. I have tricky color damaged hair and extensions and she really took her time creating a color for me and making sure it was perfected. I also have very fine straight hair and bangs and she gave me the best bang trim I've ever had - I usually have to style them with heat and product but haven't even needed to because the cut was so great it air dries beautifully. The stylists here really care about their craft and the overall client experience - would absolutely recommend! read more

I had my wedding hair done by Gina at Barnet Fair. She did a beautiful up do for me that was natural and wavy, while still sleek and modern. At my trial, we struggled a little bit to get the perfect look, but when I came back for the real thing, she had asked been asking fellow stylists and trialing different things and had come up with the perfect technique to get the textured but sleek look I was searching for. She did an amazing job and my hair looked beautiful all night (and stayed put). I really loved working with her! Would definitely recommend to other brides!
