I got a curly 70s/80s shag haircut with Brent last week and I love it! I was pretty nervous because I was always told that I couldn't have bangs or short layers because of my curls. Brent reassured me that my hair was perfect for this cut, and he was right! He first dry cut my curly hair (if you're curly, I recommend coming to the salon already washed and styled so they can see it in its natural shape and dry cut it), then he softened the layers near my face with a brush so that I could see what it would look like in a softer 70s style. He explained that if I wanted to go with an 80s shag, all I had to do was wear my hair natural and curly. It was a combination hair 'n' history lesson! Anyway, I'm so grateful to Brent--the cut he gave me is extremely low maintenance. It looks great, even after I first wake up (wearing my silk bonnet helps though)! I thought bangs would be a pain in the butt, but his cut made them effortless. If you have curly hair or want a shag style, I highly recommend Brent! He also has curly hair, though it's short now, so he really understands how it works. I used to only get Deva cuts, and those (mostly straight-haired) stylists would always spout off the same tired advice from their trainings that I already knew. In contrast, Brent gave me new, unique styling tips and took his time to show me different ways I could wear the style. American Mortals. I should say before express why I have rated this salon lowly, that I often avoid giving poor ratings because often nothing changes. No one responds. No changes are made. But I hope that those that read this will hear me clearly and respond accordingly. I have been to American Mortals a little under a dozen times. Appointments: Everytime I have scheduled an appointment with this Salon I have never been asked about my hair texture or needs. When I say this to receptionist always responds with a microaggression: "Let me find someone who can do your type of hair." This is always a scramble. Everytime I visit the scramble always becomes clear because there are ZERO BIPOC employees. So why go to American Mortals at all. Because I wanted to go to a salon that specializes and focuses in dyeing hair and prioritizing the health of your hair while giving you an opportunity express yourself. All of my non- BIPOC friends raved about this place. The reviews were wonderful. So surely someone could do my hair as well. In the chair: I worked with 2 stylist before I found someone at American Mortals who saw me and listened. The first two stylists stated that they would be unable to dye my hair and that people with " my type of hair" don't dye it those colors because my hair wasn't light enough or strong enough. I was "better off with extensions" or a lace front wig. The process (Wash, condition, trim, style): The stylists spent 10 to 15 minutes picking at my hair, trying to "run their fingers through it", stating that " I just have curly hair", I've done curly hair before, so 'This' [my texture] should be fine. I have curly hair so I know what to do. On numerous occasions I had to advocate for the stylists to wash, and then detangle my hair carefully while wet, to cut it while dry. With the exception of ONE stylist - all other stylists argued that "that's fine, but it doesn't matter". But it does. When you are black with type 3 or 4 hair, you encounter shrinkage, single strand knots, and (without careful detailed detangling) breakage. Not to mention that I also had to request a heat protectant when my hair was being blown dry. When this request was made I was told," my type of hair is kinky and curly enough so it doesn't really need it." When the appointment was over stylist always noted how much longer my hair was than they initially thought. Additional microaggression to add to the pile. After those experiences. I was ready to give up. And then I found a stylist that listened, shared her knowledge, and her blind spots. She always deferred to me, and asked what I felt my hair needed, what my hair goals were and what I was comfortable with. If I had questions instead of being defensive she was patient and open. She no longer works there. That truly breaks my heart. PLEASE( IF THE MANAGER IS READING THIS) HEAR ME, representation matters, my hair texture - which is 3C- matters, black hair matters and I want to call you in. Fix it. Find people who are passionate about working with hair, not just a few types that align with their experiences. Working with that ONE stylist changed the game for me. Hair care felt possible in a city filled with salons that just take your money. Without people like her in your salon, I am not sure who you are or what you choosing to stand for. It is probable that you are no worse off, business in this world favors people who dont look like me. But what does that say about your salon. The first interaction was over the phone. Not only was reception super pleasant, they listened to the reason for my visit and empathized as well. When I arrived everyone was welcoming and friendly. The salon's covid protocols made me comfortable. Scarlett was absolutely amazing. She was incredibly understanding, she listened to my worries, and eased them almost immediately. She kept me in the loop about what she was doing with my hair, she's a great conversation, and genuine. I felt welcomed to be there, and I could tell Scarlett was prepared for my visit. I want to start off by saying the stylists here are great and I loved my haircut each and every time. I'm only writing this review because I feel a bit forlorn. I learned that my dad has stage 3 cancer last night and had to cancel my appointment for tomorrow. I understand the 24 hour rule but $85 feels a bit steep. Not only that but the last time I was in I only learned my highlights/coloring would cost ~$450 after it was already done. I'm not the type to complain about the price of a service, especially when they do such a good job, so I didn't say anything. tbh I wish I would have been told before hand because that's not really something I can afford out of the blue. That being said I could totally overlook it and just remember to ask next time, but that plus being told I have to pay almost $100 during a family emergency has really put me off. Once again, not even angry, just... sad I guess. So if you're on a tight budget or can't afford to drop a few hundred dollars just be warned. I got a few great cuts and some really cool color here. People would stop me to ask who did my hair. It was great, and I was happy. But on my last two visits, I was disappointed. First, I was disappointed in a cut. But I went back again and got color, too. After waiting to be finished (my color had been rinsed and I was sitting at the sink), someone came by--not my stylist--to say I was done. Huh? They directed me to an empty station and handed me a brush and a blowdryer. "Oh, I thought you knew. It's an extra charge if I dry it for you," my stylist said. I didn't know that, but if I had I would still have opted to pay the charge. But nobody ever asked me that. I scheduled my appt. for a night that I had plans an could show off my new 'do. Instead, I blew it dry myself (she'd already started another client's cut) and left while it was still damp. I was embarrassed to be standing in a salon, styling my own hair, as if I was too cheap or not important enough to have a stylist do it for me. Plus, the color was not what I requested (brown is not "neutral black"). Like a breakup, I don't know what went wrong. We were so good together! Maybe I went on two bad days, just flukes. Maybe I wasn't clear, though I know I said the color correctly. And who knew I had to specially request a blowdry? They did that every other time I got color here. *sigh* read more

I went here during the summer for a balayage ombre with Brent. The receptionist was really friendly. The salon felt welcoming and inviting. Brent was super patient with me and my schedule. They offer drinks such as water, beer, and wine while you wait and get your hair done. Brent did an amazing job and he was more affordable than the other stylists that I was researching. I was happy with my hair and impressed with his hair knowledge. I look forward to seeing him soon. Also note that parking is a hassle but if you're lucky then you can find street parking or pay at parking garages. read more

I STRONGLY encourage anyone thinking about getting a color process to check out AmMo's Instagram account..it will give you an idea of what they are good at and what they do. (Just google 'American Mortals Instagram') All of my friends, literally all of them, go to Brent when they want a new hair color or style. My mom, a redhead, broke off a 3+ year relationship with her old salon and now drives 1.5 hours exclusively so that Brent can dye her hair, because he does such a phenomenal job. He's great because he listens to what you want and will be straightforward with you--what will work or won't work/maintenance/time required/etc. He also keeps in mind what your hair will look like 3-4 weeks after your appointment, so you don't look like a crazy person when your hair starts to grow out! I love that I can get my hair done and also drink wine or beer! Love the decor and I'm a big fan of the R+CO products they use. If I didn't have a ridiculous​ amount of hair products already, I would buy all the products they offer and use on my hair. I had my hair dyed yesterday by Marti and I LOVE it! The only reason this place isn't getting ​five stars from me this time around is that​ I walked out of the salon with hair dye stains on my forehead and I didn't realize it until 10 mins later on my walk home! I honestly received the best haircut and color I have ever had here. Kelly is so amazing and knowledgeable. What I really appreciated is how she took time to understand my care routines and did my hair accordingly. She knows I'm busy and don't devote a lot of time to myself so she helped me choose a color that went well with my skin tone, but also wouldn't look terrible if let it grow out a little longer than recommended. I will never go to any other hair salon in Philadelphia. It's really hard for me to find a really great hair salon that I am always 100% happy after the service is over. This is that place. I usually go to Marti, but she is always so booked up that I haven't seen her in a while. Let me tell you about Marti. She is the absolute nicest person in the world and really cares about you and your hair. I remember the first time I went to her and she offered me drinks through the service and she brought over all these magazines for me to read while she putting the dye on my hair. I am Korean and have very thick black hair, but I am currently a Blonde. It's really hard for hair salons to be able to get my hair that light and she nailed it. There was also one time when I wanted my hair to be rose gold, which the color came out beautifully, but after one wash it was almost all out. marti quickly squeezed me into her busy schedule and even did a different service (I got purple ombré instead) and didn't charge me for it. She always remembers me and what we talked about previously. And come on, that's always a plus with your hair stylists! I also recently saw Leslie a couple weeks ago. She did everything that I wanted with my hair and was able to find the right colors to match my hair. She is fairly new but is also wonderful! Thank you always AMMO! read more

I've been going to see Joe at American Mortals since I moved to Philly in 2014. He cut my BFF's hair when she lived here and that recommendation was the beginning of a great relationship. Joe is the BEST. I'm adventurous with my hair (pixie cut! Long and purple! Rose gold bob! And everything in between) and Joe just makes all my hair dreams come to life. I recently brought him a picture and said "sort of like this, but do what you want" and he I think changed my life with this haircut. My textured bob is everything I could have wanted and the tortoiseshell color super fresh. I have literally never gotten so many compliments on a haircut in my life. You see, in style matters I am defined by classics (Hermes Kelly someday), but sometimes you need someone to take you out of your comfort zone. I am embarrassed to admit I brought in a photo of Michele Williams for Louis Vuitton ad as my talking point, but when one says, "I want to go short" it can mean just two inches. Not for me, not for today. I booked my appointment online, great feature, for Shari based on Yelp reviews and availability. She listened to my nervous explanation and didn't laugh at my picture. Then she exclaimed that I'd look great with short hair. I felt reassured and excited and then let her come up with something for me that used my hair texture and highlighted my features. Forty minutes and half a Yuengling later, I was shocked at the transformation. Shari really knocked it out of the park. Sure it will take some getting used to, but I know that I already love it. I really appreciated his level of detail in the color I wanted on the tips of my hair. I left the salon a happy camper and ready to take on the world. The morning after, in the daylight my hair looked a little brassy at the root; so I gave them a call. Ryan wasn't in the shop, but they told me to come down and I'd be taken care of. After one experience in American Mortals, Queen Village, I will never go anywhere else. This year has been difficult for me as I have been through treatments for a very aggressive Cancer. My mobility has greatly decreased and I am now slightly hunched over. When my hair finally did come in after 6 months of baldness, it came in gray. I have been feeling like I look 20 years older than I actually am and in desperate need of a pick-me-up. The shape my new hair was serendipitously taking was a bit birdlike. I had this idea that I wanted to look like a blue jay. On my first visit with Logan Markiewicz, I told him my story and asked him to make me a blue Jay. He was a bit concerned, asked me to give it a little more time (so that I had more hair) and made sure that I checked with my oncologist before bleaching it. We made the appointment for a month out, which turned out to be perfect. In the mean time, Logan studied blue jays on his own. When I came in for my appointment, he had the colors all ready. He spent 3 1/2 hours on my small amount of hair, fussing over the intricate details. He took my request to heart and made it happen. Before I left, I scheduled another appointment. I went to both the Queen village and Washigton Square location. I had black hair and wanted a complete do over into rainbow colored hair. It was a big change for me and I have never done this before. Making the appointment was very easy online. They show the price upfront which is great. Max was attentive and very focused into turning my hair into rainbow colors. He worked hard to get the right colors with the balayage technique. At the end it turned out to be there was more red around my face than I would like so I scheduled another appointment and he corrected or fine tuned the rainbow colors. There was a lot of effort put into reaching the end result and it is stunning. I love my hair. The manager was accommodating to understand that I should not be charged for my second visit for the correction.If you want rainbow,go to Max, he will do it right!. read more

Say it with me, y'all...whahh whahhh. I was a loyal customer here for a few years and got to know the owners and the staff quite well. For the record, they are all lovely, lovely people. So you're probably wondering why I stopped going there, huh? Take a seat and I will tell you... Every time I booked an appointment (I was faithful to Joe, who is really talented and super nice) it was always screwed up. Without fail, I'd go in for cut and color and be told that they had only scheduled me for one or the other. Sure, mistakes happen, but every GD time? After being stuck over in the corner one too many times (yes, someone put this baby in a corner) with wet hair, shivering and listening to '80's alternative while Joe frantically cut someone else's hair before getting back to me, I decided I'd had enough. This was on top of the cash I was dropping as well as the aggravation factor. I might have developed high blood pressure as a result. Now whenever I walk by I feel like I have to be on the phone or cross the street so nobody walks out and accosts me. It's like we broke up and never had closure.
