AM Salon is fairly new, about three months old, hair salon on Race Street in Chinatown. The space is large, clean, modern and relaxing. The stylists are very knowledgeable and experienced. If you bring a photo of the hair style you would like they will try to duplicate that for you. I had Anson as my stylist and he took his time and is extremely detail oriented. My wife had Sandy for her color and trim and was also very happy with her result and experience. The head and shoulders massage after having our hair washed was really great and relaxing. Having ones hair cut in China Town is different experience then at at typical American salon. One's hair is washed twice. Once before the cut, and the wash includes a short facial and shoulder massage. Your hair is then washed again after cutting before final styling. Prices are reasonable and in line with other salons in Chinatown. We also always enjoy a meal at one of the wonderful restaurants in Chinatown after having our haircuts! I highly recommend AM salon! 5 Yelps stars *****

Great service! Love the modern interior. Came in for a hair wash but will definitely be coming back next time for my color!

They sat us down quickly and David was the one that helped my husband with his haircut.

I have a pretty…read morebasic haircut request (1 on the sides, high fade, scissor trim) so I serve as the base line for service at hair studios because my request is quite possibly the simplest. First off, the place feels big. Has nice calming music playing in the background so it's a pleasant experience visiting and even sitting in the chair for some time. The wash was about the same length of time as a wash from other places here in Chinatown, but somehow it was significantly more enjoyable. The people here know what they're doing, and my scalp feels much better than it did before, and I didn't even know if was feeling anything before. Cut was ~30 minutes, and $28 + tip. Overall, it's on the pricier end of what I've experienced so far in Chinatown, although not by much. However, the quality of the cut was much better than others. In other places, it feels a bit more rushed or cursory, but I felt like I was getting focused attention on my cut. He spent a lot of it actually in touch up and layering, which was good attention to detail. Honestly one of the best cuts I've gotten in Chinatown. Definitely beats out in quality over other mainstays like Kevin's, but at a slightly higher price point.

Also gave me my first hair cut in several months, long layers, and trimmed away all the over processed ends. She's very careful about COVID-19 and even took a safety class. You call ahead and you are the only person in the salon besides her. Also, since it's a small salon, it's not expensive (although I gave a big tip because of COVID--and to support a female small business owner of color during pandemic!). If you are on the fence, I'd go (call first). Alyssa also does much fancier coloring jobs, and I might try one in the future. She seems like the right person to take a risk with. The salon has moved to a nice part of South Street (1112 South St.) where I managed to find parking without a problem.

I went to this hair salon in university city for a trim, and I felt that the stylist was knowledgeable about curly/wavy coarse hair. I was a little worried about going to a salon in China town because often the hair type that they see often is smoother / softer which I don't have. But my hair is looking a lot healthier, and they didn't take off too much of my length! The only issue I had was that it took a little longer than I would have liked and I was being switched between two people repeatedly. I've experienced having a different person the was my hair, another to cut my hair, and another to style my hair but I had 2 different people style my hair, probably because it started to get crowded. I wish the entire visit was only an hour but it was closer to 2.5 hours, and other people in the salon were beginning to complain about the wait. My friend also got his hair cut and said he liked the cut, but he was done in about 45 minutes, where usually his cuts take about 30 minutes, then he had to wait for me to be done as well. I will definitely be going back here but I'll be sure to go on a day that I know I have more time. My hair feels super healthy and nicely cut.

The stylist was polite enough when I was welcomed in. I told her that I wanted my hair trimmed with…read moremy hair covering my ears, and the top blended in with the sides. She smiled and agreed, and started cutting. In no time at all, she had cut the hair on one side of my head above my ear, which was the opposite of what I asked for, as I have a deformed right ear from decades of combat sports competition, and I wanted it concealed. As she had already ruined my hair on one side, I bit my tongue as she made the other side match it. I was absolutely furious, but what can a stylist do once they've taken too much off? Absolutely nothing. Now I am stuck with a haircut where my deformed ear is visible for the whole world to see because the stylist decided to give me that haircut that she wanted to give me instead of the one that I asked for. I paid for my haircut with a card and departed in a polite manner, but the moment I hit the sidewalk, I could no nothing but scream profanity as the realization that I couldn't cover my deformed ear kicked in. Now I am not only out $18, but I am stuck with a haircut which leaves me open to yet more questions along the lines of "What's wrong with your ear?" [Edit, I called the place and she offered me a refund, but this doesn't undo the damage she did to my personal appearance. I'll take the refund, but this review stands.] I grew the sides of my hair longer specifically to hide that ear, and the stylist decided that she knew better than me where my haircut was concerned, and forced her personal preferences onto my head. That stylist is very fortunate that I have superior control over my temper, because she has left me feeling disfigured with the haircut she gave me, and now that I'm home and trying to style this mess, I see that she couldn't even manage to trim my bangs straight, and the hair on one side is not symmetrical with the hair on the other side. With the mess she left me with, with my deformed ear exposed, I might just shave my head instead of putting up with this terrible thing she did to my head. I am so humiliated that I don't even want to be seen in public looking like this. I went in feeling good about myself and looking forward to the haircut I asked for, and I left with my self-esteem in the gutter. I get upset every time I catch my refection and see what she did to my appearance. I can't go out looking like this. In short, she was absolutely incompetent & unprofessional in providing a haircut according to the very simple instructions I gave her. She shouldn't be permitted to cut hair, and if she has a state license for cutting hair, it should be revoked. The only reason she's getting one star is because I can't give her zero stars. Attached to this review, you'll see two photos detailing how she couldn't even manage to cut my hair evenly. I could have gotten a better cut from a landscaper with a weed-whacker. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and no apology or refund can do undo the damage. I'll have to wear a hat until my hair covers my deformed ear again. Thanks to a stylist who doesn't listen, I get to wear a hat to cover my deformed ear now. As a craftsman and a business owner, I can tell you that this is not how a professional renders a service to a client. **Update** I spoke with the stylist on the phone a short time ago about the refund she told me she would give me, and instead of telling me when I could come down & get it, she began making all manner of excuses as to why she shouldn't refund my money. This is the kind of experience you can expect to have with this hair stylist: first she will ruin your hair, then she will justify her poor work and back-peddle out of any refund she's already offered you. I should have looked at the other 1-Star reviews of this place, because it seems that those people all had a very similar experience to mine. As a small business owner myself, I'm very enthusiastic about supporting small businesses, but not if they're run by incompetent, unprofessional people who refuse to accept accountability for the damage they do, or offer fair compensation in return for those damages.

This time, and pretty much every other time, I've been able to be started almost immediately. Folks here are Chinese-preferred. As a Chinese non-speaker, I usually have a awkward time for the first 5 minutes, but from there, the cut is quality and fast. $20 for a basic crew cut, and I'm in and out in ~20 minutes. They've got everything you need here, and keep the place pretty clean, so I have no reason not to regularly come back for simple cuts as needed!

It's a pretty nice place, the woman who washed my hair was relatively young and spoke English so that's cool, and the hair stylist gave me a pretty good haircut. The rude surprise was when I went to pay and the owner told me that it's cash only, no credit cards. Like most people these days, I don't carry much cash on me. I usually pay with my credit card and use the cash I have to give tips, often asking them to break my $20 bill so that I could tip the hair stylist and the woman who washed my hair. I told the owner that I had only $20 in cash (just enough to pay for the haircut). Then she had the nerve to ask me about tips. I explained to her that I had intended to pay for the haircut with my credit card and to use my cash for tips. She doesn't seem to understand that tips are optional and up to the customer, not mandatory or required by law. The owner acted like it was my fault that I did not have enough cash for both the haircut and tips when she was the one who failed to tell me that it's cash only when I first walked in and asked how much a haircut was. Instead of being apologetic or taking any responsibility for not taking credit cards, she blamed me for her own shortcoming. Who doesn't take credit cards in 2026 and why? Tax evasion? Someone needs to call the IRS on her! Eventually, I was told that I could go to the grocery store next door to use my credit card. Apparently, they worked out something with the grocery store that their customers can use their credit cards there to give them credit for groceries. After two long days at work, I really was not expecting to be treated so rudely on my one day off and going to get my hair cut and by people I was paying money to! I will never give this place a second try!
