Left side

Just got a "balayage" with Alana. I knew what I wanted and what I didn't want, so I explained it thoroughly and showed examples of what I want and what I don't want and double checked that we were on the same page. All that to get EXACTLY what I said I did not want, in two distinctly different shades (my left side is visibly lighter than my right side, both the person who did the blow dry and the reception lady agreed that two sides looked different), and with a very distinct boarder between the colored and the natural part (I also mentioned specifically that I do not want that). Adding to the quality of the work, Alana hasn't even bothered to take a look at the result after the blow dry, or even to say good buy, or even to talk at all since the moment she started working on my hair. I guess she was too busy ruining someone else's hair. I wanted a new look for my b-day, instead, I look like shit. Crying as I type this. Never will I set foot in this place again. PS Not that it matters in the light of the resulting look of my hair, but I also got a mild food poisoning there. Cream for their coffee had gotten bad, I could tell by the huge white chunks it formed when I poured it in the coffee, so I didn't drink it. Alana gave me another cup with the cream already added and commented that one needs to steer it real good. I didn't register the comment at first, but the taste of the coffee was sour, and I got a stomach ache very soon after drinking it. Only then I realized that the cream was bad the second time too, she just stirred the chunks of the sour milk really good so that they are not visible. When I commented on that, Alana just ignored me. I mean, it is definitely not necessary to provide coffee for the customers, but, as long as you do it, and it is a part of your service, don't hide bad milk and give people food poisoning. Better not have the coffee at all, in my opinion.

David was awesome! My first time getting my hair done in Philly. This place was a third party recommendation. I was planning on this event to donate my hair, walked in and spoke to David 2 months prior about the best way to go about it since I was making a little event at school with it. He thoroughly explained and showed me what I should do. 2 months came and went. Yesterday 4/24 I chopped off over 12inches, 12 donated and whatever David needed to do to make me look good. From the hair washing scalp massage to the over all style.... everything was and still is perfect. Thank you David for doing such an awesome jobz

Update after my last review: more praise!! I've since continued seeing Lauren K. for my haircuts. She's awesome, friendly, listens to me, and does a great job on the cut and style every single time!! I decided to add a color service this past visit and was honestly a little nervous as I haven't colored my hair in years. Laura did my balayage highlights and they are gorgeous!! She took the time to talk first, explained the process to me and answered all my questions before agreeing that what I wanted was a good fit. I am in love with the result. Downside: I do have to agree with other reviewers commenting on the front desk atmosphere. They've never been particularly friendly in my experience but this most recent visit I walked in and there were 5 or 6 people standing behind the desk silently staring at me. Not one smile or greeting...super awkward. I don't know what's going on up there but don't let the front desk stop you from getting great hair care! I still give it 5 stars because it's worth the odd interactions at check in and check out for this fantastic hair.

So even post covid this place is great! Everyone is really nice and you can tell they really care about their clientele, the way they go out of their way to ensure safe practices of hand washing, social distancing and even going as far to provide new masks to people so you won't ruin yours with color. I live in the Northeast so it's a bit of a hike, but I go for my colorist Alanna who's an absolute ARTIST and will have you laughing 90% of the time your there. She's sweet and so talented. If you ask for her you will not regret it. I got my hair cut by Riley who's really friendly and actually LISTENS to what you say about what you want and gives that exactly to you. Now it is a bit pricy, but it's worth it and i'd gladly pay that price everytime, if it's done right. 10/10 would absolutely and will go again :)

Pits and thin, uneven application

Did my nails for the first time a few weeks ago and really liked the look. Decided to go to a salon to get a professional look, and chose this salon. Was pretty excited, took the day off so I could relax and enjoy the experience. Looked at my nails after and I saw a lot of lines showing where there wasn't any polish, and a number of other issues. Altogether not impressed, especially considering I did a better job on my own, for the first time, as a 35 year old guy, than the professional did. I brought in my own polish because I love the color, and was then really disappointed with how bad they look. Beyond this, the folks at the front desk seemed a bit aloof and not really interested in talking to customers. Won't be coming back.

First off, the place feels big. Has nice calming music playing in the background so it's a pleasant experience visiting and even sitting in the chair for some time. The wash was about the same length of time as a wash from other places here in Chinatown, but somehow it was significantly more enjoyable. The people here know what they're doing, and my scalp feels much better than it did before, and I didn't even know if was feeling anything before. Cut was ~30 minutes, and $28 + tip. Overall, it's on the pricier end of what I've experienced so far in Chinatown, although not by much. However, the quality of the cut was much better than others. In other places, it feels a bit more rushed or cursory, but I felt like I was getting focused attention on my cut. He spent a lot of it actually in touch up and layering, which was good attention to detail. Honestly one of the best cuts I've gotten in Chinatown. Definitely beats out in quality over other mainstays like Kevin's, but at a slightly higher price point.

I made an appointment for a sunday (which was recommended since it can get busy on weekends). I was not disappointed. While there were other clients present in the salon, my hair was washed right away. Alyssa cut my hair. She asked me about what style I wanted, what length, etc. She took the time to tell me what kind of cut would look good for my hair type. I followed her recommendations, and I am so pleased the result. I'll definitely be back for my next haircut! The price and service can't be beat.

Also gave me my first hair cut in several months, long layers, and trimmed away all the over processed ends. She's very careful about COVID-19 and even took a safety class. You call ahead and you are the only person in the salon besides her. Also, since it's a small salon, it's not expensive (although I gave a big tip because of COVID--and to support a female small business owner of color during pandemic!). If you are on the fence, I'd go (call first). Alyssa also does much fancier coloring jobs, and I might try one in the future. She seems like the right person to take a risk with. The salon has moved to a nice part of South Street (1112 South St.) where I managed to find parking without a problem.

She smiled and agreed, and started cutting. In no time at all, she had cut the hair on one side of my head above my ear, which was the opposite of what I asked for, as I have a deformed right ear from decades of combat sports competition, and I wanted it concealed. As she had already ruined my hair on one side, I bit my tongue as she made the other side match it. I was absolutely furious, but what can a stylist do once they've taken too much off? Absolutely nothing. Now I am stuck with a haircut where my deformed ear is visible for the whole world to see because the stylist decided to give me that haircut that she wanted to give me instead of the one that I asked for. I paid for my haircut with a card and departed in a polite manner, but the moment I hit the sidewalk, I could no nothing but scream profanity as the realization that I couldn't cover my deformed ear kicked in. Now I am not only out $18, but I am stuck with a haircut which leaves me open to yet more questions along the lines of "What's wrong with your ear?" [Edit, I called the place and she offered me a refund, but this doesn't undo the damage she did to my personal appearance. I'll take the refund, but this review stands.] I grew the sides of my hair longer specifically to hide that ear, and the stylist decided that she knew better than me where my haircut was concerned, and forced her personal preferences onto my head. That stylist is very fortunate that I have superior control over my temper, because she has left me feeling disfigured with the haircut she gave me, and now that I'm home and trying to style this mess, I see that she couldn't even manage to trim my bangs straight, and the hair on one side is not symmetrical with the hair on the other side. With the mess she left me with, with my deformed ear exposed, I might just shave my head instead of putting up with this terrible thing she did to my head. I am so humiliated that I don't even want to be seen in public looking like this. I went in feeling good about myself and looking forward to the haircut I asked for, and I left with my self-esteem in the gutter. I get upset every time I catch my refection and see what she did to my appearance. I can't go out looking like this. In short, she was absolutely incompetent & unprofessional in providing a haircut according to the very simple instructions I gave her. She shouldn't be permitted to cut hair, and if she has a state license for cutting hair, it should be revoked. The only reason she's getting one star is because I can't give her zero stars. Attached to this review, you'll see two photos detailing how she couldn't even manage to cut my hair evenly. I could have gotten a better cut from a landscaper with a weed-whacker. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and no apology or refund can do undo the damage. I'll have to wear a hat until my hair covers my deformed ear again. Thanks to a stylist who doesn't listen, I get to wear a hat to cover my deformed ear now. As a craftsman and a business owner, I can tell you that this is not how a professional renders a service to a client. **Update** I spoke with the stylist on the phone a short time ago about the refund she told me she would give me, and instead of telling me when I could come down & get it, she began making all manner of excuses as to why she shouldn't refund my money. This is the kind of experience you can expect to have with this hair stylist: first she will ruin your hair, then she will justify her poor work and back-peddle out of any refund she's already offered you. I should have looked at the other 1-Star reviews of this place, because it seems that those people all had a very similar experience to mine. As a small business owner myself, I'm very enthusiastic about supporting small businesses, but not if they're run by incompetent, unprofessional people who refuse to accept accountability for the damage they do, or offer fair compensation in return for those damages.

The interior is bright and newly remodeled, giving it a modern and clean look. They offer many services such as haircut, perm, dye, and even hair treatments. There is even a dedicated person that washes your hair for you before and after your haircut. She is super gentle and thorough. She even massages your head while she washes it! I came in on a Monday around lunch time and they weren't busy at all. Since it was our first time there, we didn't have a stylist in mind. They sat us down quickly and David was the one that helped my husband with his haircut. He is very knowledgeable about Asian hair types as he trained in Tokyo for 6 years. If you show him a photo, he will be sure to match the style you requested through the photo. He will constantly show you what the back looks like through a mirror to ensure that you're satisfied with the results. David is really a perfectionist and he even told me that he's always open to criticism, so if you're unhappy with something, just communicate with him and he will be sure to make it right. There might be a language barrier if you don't speak Chinese but I think a translation app would work just fine. My husband got a Korean style two block haircut and I have to admit it's one of the best haircuts that he has ever gotten! The longer layers in the back blended seamlessly with the shorter portion on the back of his head. My husband is traumatized from getting haircuts because oftentimes you pay a lot for a haircut that you don't even end up liking, but he's glad that he finally found a spot that he will be returning to. For wash and haircut, the price is $28, but they were running a promotion at the time so it ended up costing $23. Overall, I highly recommend this hair salon to those who are looking to get a quality haircut.
