I don't know what happened, but the shop I highly praised somehow turned into the little shop of horrors. So I only visit this shop once a year to get my natural hair straightened and colored. I made my usual online appointment and showed up on my scheduled day. I thought everything was going to be business as usual but....... I arrived at the shop at 1:30 and once I entered there were two employees (the owner was not there) who both looked at me as if I messed up by walking into the shop. I didn't get a hello or welcome to the shop at all, instead I got the vibe that they were clearly ready to go home, and I just happened to show up on an appointment that they confirmed a day earlier but happened to forgot. Yup they forgot about it, the employee that was once friendly was not so friendly, she approached me with negative energy, went to the front desk, asked if I had an appointment. She then gives me an awkward stare as she looks into the computer. She then ask me for my last name and I tell her, which ignites another short awkward pause. The employee then stares at my hair and asked do you normally straightened your hair, all while giving me a judgemental vibe. The employee then walks over to the other girl and they converse. I then ask them if it's a bad day and she says well " I can either straightened your hair or color but I can't do both so which one do you want" So we go back and forth on if my appointment is valid, I even let her listen to my saved voicemail message of them confirming my appointment. I let her know that I was disappointed by their professionalism. Overall I understand that things happen or may come up, I get that. I just felt like this miscommunication or discrepancy could've been resolved in a more civilized, professional and diplomatic manner. It's sad cause the shop does good work it's just some that D classes the entire shop. read more

These ladies not only know how to do hair they are well versed on the art of hair! I moved to Philadelphia a few months ago and I think that I've found my go to spot. I took a bus for about 30 minutes and walked another 5 minutes to get here. It's not in the best neighborhood, but I didn't feel too uncomfortable. When I arrived for my noon appointment, my stylist Kemi, was not there. However, she made a point to call to speak with me, letting me know she was late and then talking me through the treatment I would be receiving and answering my numerous questions. She had one of the assistants wash me (Camille? I feel bad for not remembering). She was sweet, funny, intelligent and down to earth like all of the other ladies in the salon. I received service all the way through, and while the initial estimate of 2 hours wasn't quite on the mark (took a little over 3), I must say it was a great experience. They used all DE products and they have in house products which all seemed great. Kemi talked me all the way through the process and was so personable I felt as though I had known her for years. She listened to what I wanted for my hair and delivered. Now my natural 4b/c hair is smooth and straight and much more manageable. She also gave me a great trim, press and curl after the treatment. How can I say this??? I absolutely loved Vixens Hair Studio. There was a bit of confusion in the beginning but it had nothing to do with any of the staff. It was my fault, however, even though there was a hiccup I was still able to be seen. It was so awesome for them to see me. There was nothing but professionalism and I had a lot of fun during the times I didn't nod off I have to say that when my hair was being blow dried out it was not rough! It was obviously being done with care. She didn't snatch my damn hair out. I was shocked compared to the last place I visited for my hair. I can also comfortably move my head and not be on the verge of tears after getting my hair done! No need for medicine ! And she also decorated my hair! She was extremely patient as well. I immediately got compliments as I walked out. I'll make this place my regular when I want my hair done. The price was super reasonable too. Worth every penny surely. My edges won't be coming out from this style either! I'm super excited about finding this business. I have nothing but good words about the staff and their skills. read more

Where do I start? Shoot, how do I start.... I had selected this hair salon based on the postive yelp and google reviews and I was sold...now I saw some negative/poor reviews, but I didn't focus on that and wanted to base my judgement solely on my experience. My appointment day arrives I get to the shop 10 minutes early. As I walk into the shop, there wasn't anyone at the front desk to greet me, but I was greeted within a minute of coming in by a stylist and asked what I was getting done and who I was there to see... My stylist, Kimmy, who is also the owner of the shop had a client in her chair already so I was told to have a seat and fill out the new client profile, which I did. So I sat down and waited...then waited some more....not once did the stylist apologize for running behind schedule...my appointment was at 11am and I wasn't seen until 45 mins later....1st strike...As I am waiting for my stylist to wrap up her client, I am then directed to have a seat, I believe the shampoo girl was prepping me for the color. The client in my stylist's seat gets up to pay and I get excited...finally my time and I see that another client sits in her seat....at this point...I'm agitated, but I still keep it cute... Finally, my stylist comes to speak to me and asks me about my hair, if I have had any dye in my hair, I told her yes...I had dyed my hair blue black...She asks how long has it been and I respond 3 weeks. She then gives me the rundown about hair care, applying the color, and informing that if/when she applies this color on my hair...it may not come out like the color I picked out because my hair is so dark and they do not strip/bleach the hair. She had asked me if I was sure that i wanted to go thru with it as she wanted to protect the integrity of my hair....I told her let's do it....I appreciated her insight and her expertise...I really did... However, I would have been mo appreciative had this "consultation" happened prior to my appointment or even within the first 15 minutes of my appointment instead of an hour later than my scheduled appointment. Strike #2 Why am I JUST finding out your shop doesn't bleach/strip hair?!?! The timing was all the way off. Strike #3 She starts applying the color to my hair and just like that I was finished and sitting under the dryer. I am now under the dryer, a few mins in, I feel the color running down my neck...I asked the shampoo girl If I could please have a towel and she comes over and begins to wipe my face down with a white towel (not the smartest idea) and I got red dye coming down my neck, face and ears, she is given further instruction by one of the stylists and then she comes over with a cotton ball with some type of solution and starts to wipe my neck and ear down...I am dripping at this point...She continues to wipe me down with the cotton ball....she doesn't seem to catch the dye quick enough and so she hands me a piece and here we are both wiping the dye off my face and neck together...What the hell?!?! Why am I doing her job? The stylist sees the frustration on my face and tells her to just wash me out at this point.... I get to the chair and this has to be by far one of the worse/mediocre washes ever...I have to guide her and give her direction throughout..I ask her how my color is looking and she says, "I see it", "It came out" ...I told her if I could please see a mirror...when I had seen that only my roots were that color and the rest of my hair was black..I. was. not. happy. The shampoo girl's response: " Your curls are poppin tho." At this point, I was over it. Not only because my hair color didn't come out the exact way I wanted...I was bracing myself for that possibility, but it was the domino effect of negative experiences. The stylist offered to color it back, I told her that I would do it myself at home. A different stylist was cutting my hair....her hair looked dope so I knew if she cut her own...I would be able at least leave out of the salon with a decent cut (I have natural 3b/3c/4a combination hair)....I showed her a picture of what I wanted and asked if her clippers cut close, she told me yes and we were good or so I thought. I had asked her to just bring in the sides and the back of my head....as she begins to cut...I feel her pausing and brushing way too much, which told me she cut it too low and she was trying to fix it... When she was done I noticed it was sloppy in areas that needed some cleanup... it wasn't until I got home where I was able to actually see holes/gaps on the side of my head where she had cut too low. Which strike is this?!...cuz I done lost count. The whole time other clients was starin at me...other stylists were starin at me....they knew I looked a hot mess...I was lookin crazy in these streets. Needless to say, I won't ever...I mean EVA be going back there again. read more

This is the only hair salon I go to in Philly. I gladly make the 45 minute trip to North Philly to get my hair done by the one and only, Kemi. I've been in Philadelphia for 6 years and I have never trusted a stylist as much as I trust Kemi who is the owner of this salon. Kemi has been with me through all the perms, weaves and lastly natural hair styles I've had over the years. She has taken my hair that was damaged and cut right beneath my ears at one point to a healthy, naturally pressed length that hits well below my shoulders. Kemi is not only the best at her craft but also the most stylish, personable individual I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with in this city. Her specialties extend from natural styles to locs to weave and so much more. I can't imagine ever going to another salon as long as I'm in Philly. I highly recommend her for her hair and makeup services. Through dumb luck, i stumbled upon this salon and after my experience here, i have nothing but good praises to sing about this place. They have a wonderful, friendly and professional staff, the salon was clean, the stylists work with you and offer free consultation in order to get the desired look you want and lastly the prices were very reasonable. This salon is by far the best that I have come across in a very long time... I live in Willingboro, New Jersey... so, that says a lot... I drove 30 minutes and paid a toll to check this place out, after reading the other reviews... and let me just say, I'm happy that I took the trip! I scheduled my appointment on Wednesday for a 2:30 appointment on Saturday. I arrived at 2PM, because I wasn't too sure about the parking. Lucky me, I was able to find a great spot, just a few doors down from the salon. I walked into the salon and was greeted by a very nice receptionist. The salon was very chic and it wasn't crowded... which is always a good sign, it means that they don't overbook... which in turn means, you won't be sitting around half the day waiting to be seen. My stylist was Kanesha and she was very pleasant. I never know what I want... so, I give the stylist full control in making the final decision... I gave her an idea of what I wanted and she made her suggestions and I left out to pick up the hair from a nearby beauty supply store. As soon as I returned, I was taken back by the assistant to have my hair washed and treated. As soon as the treatment process was over, the assistant took me to a chair to blow my hair out. Once she was done, Kanesha took over... I sat in Kanesha's chair... and she went to work... she had it all planned out... it took her no time to set the tracks... the finished product was a beautiful bob, with a nice asymmetrical cut! Let me just say this, it turned out fabulous... the blend of the colors, the cut and how it falls... it couldn't get any better! I was at the salon for about two hours... Definitely, no complaints there... I was out by 4:30 and still had more than enough time to enjoy my Saturday! I will definitely be returning back to Vixens Hair Studio for numerous reasons... the staff... the speed of the service... the quality of the service... the laughs... etc, etc, etc! I really enjoyed the time that I spent at the salon! The prices were quite reasonable considering the type of services being performed. Like most women, I have had bad experiences at hair salons. So even though I loved the great reviews on here, I was still nervous when I went for the first time. If that's you right now, shake those nerves off! This place exceeded my expectations. Everyone was so polite and respectful. I was greeted with a friendly face immediately. My stylist, Kemi, was attentive and prompt. Before even getting a shampoo she sat with me and discussed my hair and styling options. That was such a shocker, the fact that she sat down with me. The woman who washed my hair (her name starts with a C) did such a fantastic job at being gentle, yet getting my hair cleaned. I have 4C coarse hair and I'm always worried someone will wash my hair and it'll end up very tangled. Thankfully, this was not the case. She cared for my hair as she dried it as well. So gentle. It was like taking care of my own hair. Loved her! While getting a trim, Kemi did a great job at explaining what she was doing and putting me at ease. Ladies, you know getting a trim at a new place can be scary! She also answered all my questions about natural hair care effectively and sweetly. I got a press and curl, and I'm soooo happy with the results!! I love my hair. I love the trim. I will definitely be going back! It's such a versatile salon. I have mature locs but have also referred women with all kinds of hair and hair needs to what I consider one of Philly's BEST salons for natural hair and no complaints so far! It has been a challenge for me to find and build a "relationship" with a hair stylist in the Philly/DE area. Mainly because the service is inconsistent. Everyone starts off great and then at some point they fall off and stop trying to earn and keep my business. I'm coming up on a year with Vixens and I have never been disappointed once my hair is done. They are committed to treating their customers well and they are very reasonably priced. My hair is natural and I wear two-strand twist. However, I've seen many great hairstyles from natural to weave in the salon. It is a pleasant environment, no drama and very welcoming. I really hate giving bad reviews to local black businesses but my experience here was definitely the worst natural hair experiences I've had so far. All I wanted was to get my 4c hair blown out, trimmed and cornrows. After my wash the stylist put NOTHING on my hair. No leave in, no heat protectant -NOTHING. She then proceeded to use a paddle brush working from the root down. Now us naturals know u gotta blow our hair tip to root or its gonna be a tangled mess. I asked her to let me see her work half way through and questioned her. To that she got an attitude. At that point I should have got up and left but I stayed and that's on me. Everything she did told me she had no idea what to do with natural hair even though it was a natural hair salon. My blow out was a frizzy mess and it was still wet. I questioned her again and again got attitude. Telling me my blow out was not going to be like at the Dominican hair salons.... smh... i was just asking for a decent blow out??!! The best thing that happened was that another girl came and braided my hair instead of her. She did a decent job and is the only reason I gave this place 1 star. If your wondering... no I didn't get a trim. No way in HELL I was trusting that stylist with scissors! read more

This is my first time here..... I love it. There was slight confusion with my appt however the staff was nice & very professional. The interior design is also pleasing. They worked quickly. Street parking is available. My stylist (kemi) spoke about my hair and taught me a few things about my locs which other shops have not done.We had a Q & A session and it helped me since im newly loc'd. She was easy to talk to and seemed knowledgable. The atmosphere of the shop was calm, good music, and everyone spoke at a good volumn not to disturb the other stylist. the staff was not talking about ratchet stuff like most shops. Nothing that was spoken about would make someone uncomfortable. I also noticed there is no T.V inside which is good because they talk with the clients and get to know them. They are interactive. What a wonderful experience. My girlfriend was getting lock extensions for the first time. I happened to be in the area and decided to stop in to bring her something to eat. I know that it can be a lengthy evolution. Not only was I surprised by how quickly it got done. The stylist (Kenisha) was very courteous and knowledgeable. She practically made a science of it. I have natural hair and my stylist is Taleah. She does a good job on my twists and they last for a decent amount of time. They move quickly and I can get appointments if I call last minute (day before). The best part and the reason why I recommend this shop is because they are so professional. When I come in, I am greeted with a smile. I don't hear the stylists talking badly about clients (which I do hear at other shops). They are gentle with my kinky hair and their prices are reasonable compared to other natural hair salons. read more

I had an appointment booked with Alexis for over a month for goddess locs. I called them today just to ask her what kind of hair she uses only for her to tell me that they tried calling me to confirm my appointment and that they left messages (ALL LIES, I didn't have one phone call). Then she says she won't be able to take me on Friday and that the owner Kimmy will refund my money. I'm wondering when they were going to tell me that she wouldn't be able to take me. I am so glad I called when I did because I would have set it off if I showed up Friday and no one was able to do my hair. Moral of this story: DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS SALON. Friendly staff and the service was quick (slow day). With the use of a very very average flat iron, I received a very very average service. My wash-blow-straighten looked like a job I could done myself. I barely felt the flat iron on my head and the heat was low. She had to re-flat iron many parts after she was done. The blow dry was just a blow dry and the stylist asked ME was it dry..? All in all, the service was ok and there was nothing too special about my visit. She takes pride in making me look good and if I am not happy then she will happily start over (which, by the way has never happened). Yes, Yes, Yes!! Please do try this salon. I experienced it for the first time on Saturday 6/16. My appointment was with Kenisha. She is awesome!! She reviewed my hair with me after another stylist (@ another salon) had jacked my weave up. Kenisha was very knowledgeable, and very professional. She also talked about the health of my hair. She explained all of my options, and got to work! Needless to say, I'm very happy with my hair. She removed the bad weave, and did what's called a fill-in sewin weave. I love the way she framed the cut to the front of my face. She even placed the highlights in at the top in a way that actually highlights, and helps to frame my face. Previous stylist have overloaded my weave with highlighted colors. This one however is perfect! I have my second appointment coming up this weekend, and very excited. **Note: Almost forgot to mention that they also do Eyelashes and make-up. I may try it during one of my visits. I'll provide another update at that time. Lastly, my boyfriend loves my hair, and couldn't keep his hands off of me the whole weekend. LOL!! Can't argue with that!! I learned about Vixens from Groupon. I went to get lashes. I had only gotten them one time before and had a terrible experience. I figured I would give it a second try with a new place. My previous experience was terrible - the lashes were very painful and caused a lot of discomfort. At Vixens, Kanesha did my lashes. She was great. I have had them for one week now and have barely noticed they are on. I am very happy with my lashes and definitely plan to go back to visit Kanesha and Vixens :-) read more
