I found this place on here and based on the reviews and pics figured I would give it try. I wanted someone who could do unique bright and in depth color and beautiful cuts. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed. I stopped in on a whim kinda late in the day and Flor was still willing to do the cut and color even through she had multiple clients waiting. I just had to wait a little. She not only took the time to make sure we could get the color I wanted, since we would have to create it but she helped educate me on hair care for my hair type and brought my hair back to a truly healthy state and gave me an amazing cut. Everything came out so good that she took before and after pics and videos for her Instagram and then gave me her personal phone number. My hair was really straight and it lasted for a long time, but there was a catch. I had heat damage because the stylist kept going over my hair 3-5 times per part with the flat iron. Horror Story: Naturals Beware! This is my first time giving a bad review to a business. I'm not one to bash anyone's craft. But I had such I bad experience, I'm compelled to share my experience. So here goes (sorry this is a long one).... First let me say a friend highly recommended this salon, specifically the stylist Tania. This friend goes there every week to get her hair blown out. Additionally, I read all the the reviews on yelp and did as much research as I could on the salon. Everything I read had mostly positive feedback and my friends hair always appeared to be on point. So I felt fairly confident in going there. Although as a natural 4a-4b curly girl, I was very cautious to go to a Dominican hair salon. When I arrived at the salon there were 2 people in front of me. I used their restroom which was a hole in the wall. Literally, there were holes in the wall. It was so tight, you could barely move to use the toilet. They didn't have any paper towels or anything to dry your hands on. It looked like the bathroom had renovations that were never finished and they just left it like that. About 45 min later I was instructed by Tania to come get my hair washed. She had me hold on to this washing bowl contraption thing while she washed my hair. It was this thin plastic wrap cover that you had to hold it's strings at a certain angle to help stop the water from running down your back and shoulders. I've never seen anything like it. Not only was this uncomfortable to hold, you had to sit in the chair slouched all the way down in the seat because the bowl was so low. During the wash she was a little heavy handed and scrubbed my hair together which mated my hair up and made tangles. It seems this is something that happens across a lot of salons I find. They pull all your hair together in a pile and wash it on top of your head. With natural hair that it a no no. That causes tangles and mats. I sat under the dryer for about 30 min and was told I get a free deep conditioning since it was my first visit. Another stylist directed to come back to the sink to rinse out the conditioner. She detangled my hair with a wide toothed comb and started from the roots. As she combed the tangles and knots down, she held my ends so she wouldn't yank my head, but I could hear her ripping and pulling out my hair to get through the tangles. I guess hair salons just don't know you have to comb from the ends to the roots with natural hair. I then proceeded to sit in Tania's chair. This is where all hell began. She took a round bristle brush and yanked at my roots and pulled at my hair to stretch the curls and blow it out. I had to keep my head still and steady while she pulled, and I mean PULLED at my hair. I've never felt so much pain. It felt like my hair was being yanked and pulled out of my scalp. And the heat was soo hot on my scalp from the blow dryer. At one point I screamed because she held the dryer on my scalp too long. She got distracted talking to the other stylist and burnt my scalp. Side Note: This is a very unprofessional salon. During my wait and the time I was styled I watched the stylist, including Tania, keep stopping to talk and text and look at each others phones. Furthermore, there was one point during my wait where I watched the other stylist stop doing a lady's hair to put some facial cream on her face standing right over her. She didn't even wash her hands after. She just proceeded with doing the lady's hair. Tania came over shortly after and put some of the same cream on her face, and again did not wash her hands either, but just continued on with her client as well. The bushes they use are full of hair. During the entire time I was there I did not see anyone clean any of the brushes or combs they used. The Aftermath: About a week later I washed and deep conditioned my hair. My curls did not bounce back. They were lifeless and a looser curl. I didn't pay it much mind because usually when I wash my hair after it's been straightened, it takes a few washes for my curls to bounce back. A week later, I washed and deep conditioned my hair again in which a lot of hair come out in the shower. And still my curls have not come back. They are still a looser curl pattern. In fact I've noticed severe heat damage. I have random straight pieces all over my head where some ends are straight as well. I even have straight pieces at the root. After doing some research, I'm starting to wonder if they put some keratin in my hair. Some hair stylist I've found said that some salons put keratin in their shampoos and conditioners, to make the hair more "manageable". Unfortunately, I can only give this salon 1 star. And that is for the cheap services. Most salons charge $60 plus for the same service. Also I will say my hair felt very VERY straight. It was as if I had a relaxer. It felt very thin and lightweight, but it did have a lot of body. Please beware! They use A LOT of heat and are very unsanitary and unprofessional. read more

I don't think she usually cuts men's hair but she took me on, maybe because things were a little slow at the time. She does a perfect job. The shop is nice and clean. The ladies are funny. I went in for a blowout. Pretty much every request I made was ignored- I asked for conditioner only on the ends and it was put all over my hair. I asked for a rough dry because I was getting waves put in with the iron, and my hair was blown stick straight. The iron burned my ear at one point. My hair looked great, so I was willing to overlook those annoyances, until I was told the cost was sixty dollars. I've never paid more than 40 for a blowout. I handed over my card, thinking, my bad, I should have asked how much before. When I went to sign, the amount was 62, with no reason given. If I had been told that I would have paid cash. I have been twice the biggest put off of this salon is that it is small. It is a bit off putting, however these ladies make you feel comfortable. You probably will have to wait so try and call to make an appointment. The first time I was not totally happy with the curls she did as I don't usually have curls. I did receive a lot of compliments on them so it wasn't terrible. You get a free deep conditioner on your first visit which is a perk. My second visit was usual, except they washed a baby bottle in the same sink my hair was currently being washed in. Gross, but I honestly didn't care and just wanted to get my hair done. Hola mami! If you need to get your hair done well, cheaply, and quickly, this Dominican salon will fulfill all those needs. I discovered this place when I moved back to Philly after college and needed a great but more affordable place to get my hair done. I have semi-long, natural, curly hair (no chemicals) that straightens easily with heat (and patience). Typically, they'll do what's called a "wash-and-dry" AKA "lavado y secado" or "roller set", the latter being after washing your hair, they sit you under the dryer with rollers in your hair until it's dry, giving you that lustrous, bouncy hair look you're going for. The wash-and-dry costs $30 and the roller set is $25; $5 for trim/ends clipped; hair cut and styled ~$20-$40; perms and relaxers are ~$60; and color ~$25 and up. For women who want their hair to hang perfectly straight without waves and without using harsh chemicals or hot irons or combs, you can get what's called a "doobie", where your hair is brushed and wrapped tightly around your head, held in place with hairpins or clips and a head scarf, preferably silk. It's like using your head for a curler and it's less stressful for your hair and scalp! The longer you leave your hair wrapped, the better it works, so normally you'd keep the wrap overnight. You can then re-wrap your hair every night before you go to sleep to make that salon look last. (Doobies don't work with very short hair though. Matter of fact, most Dominican stylists work best with hair lengths of at least 3-4 inches. Most Dominican women like their hair to be long so some Dominican salons don't know what to do with short hair. Also, most Dominican salons don't know a lot about styles that aren't Dominican, for example corn rows, braids, weaves, etc. But you never know...so ask first.) Because I most often wear my hair straight and therefore personally prefer to get my hair blow-dried by hand, I get the "wash and dry" AKA the "Dominican blow-out" because 1) I can't sit under the dryer for very long and 2) it simply gets my hair straighter. Expect the blow dryer to get very hot and for your hair to get pulled a little, so if you're tender-headed you should get the rollers. The blow dryer works exceptionally well for me though and gives my hair tons of body and gets it fully straightened to where I come out looking like I could be in a Dark and Lovely commercial :p ¡Ay mami, joo hair so long...que linda! Customary in any Dominican salon, there will be loud talking in Spanish (they speak some English too though), as well as bachata, merengue, salsa, and/or reggaeton playing over the speaker so it'd be helpful if you brushed up on your Spanish 101. ¡So ven mamis, ven! read more

I really wanted to give this place 3.75 stars. I was there in early June and can't remember who did my hair. It was an older lady. She was very sweet and gentle with my natural, 4b, collarbone length hair. I was the first person in the shop that morning, so I didn't have a wait. I got my hair washed, conditioned, blown out, and flat ironed. She trimmed it too. I asked for an inch and got exactly an inch off! How often does that happen?!! So why not 5 stars? I was there for about 6 hours (She never took a break)!!! The only time I've ever been in a salon that long was to get braids. I called and made an appointment for a HS graduation. I spoke with Tania who offered for me to make the appointment at 9:30 am when they usually come in at 10 am. I was extremely grateful that they would come in early and thanked her for this would help ease the rest of the things we had planned on this extremely busy day. I arrived at 9:25 am and waited until 10 am before someone opened the salon. The woman identified herself as Flor and said that something came up with Tania who was unable to make it. She was unapologetic and said they did not have my number to notify me. With the distance and the wait, I understood. Things happen and sometimes you have to understand not all businesses run the same thus the great price point - don't complain. There was only one other person who arrived after me during my time at the salon took almost 3 hours for a trim and blowout. No dye involved or special style just straighten. The delay was caused by a phone call Flor paused for that took over 30 minutes - a corner involving her son's school is what she said. Granted, I understood we have cue balls thrown at us constantly and personal matters, especially concerning our children are important, but so was the schedule I had, on this day specifically. Needless to say she was very nice, did a great job with the style, hair was pin straight. I was satisfied with the finished product. Next time, I will expect a longer amount of time spent here as opposed to other salons. If you want efficient service, you pay more. Overall happy and will return.
