Shauna was able to revive my hair and educate me on how to properly style my new wave pattern! Customer service was amazing, and was promptly seated despite showing up early for my appointment. I loved the aesthetics of the location, they have the most comfortable hair-washing chairs I have sat in, and the essential oils they offered smelled amazing. I went to Mirror and Mantel about a month ago on a whim because it was in my neighborhood, and I think it was the best haircut I've ever had! Gabby did a great job, the vibe of the store was very cozy, and it's only gotten better as it grows out. I've been looking for a good stylist in Philadelphia for a while and am happy that I found Mirror and Mantel. Getting a bob haircut is difficult because a stylist needs to work with the shape of your head, hair growth direction and hair texture. I'm always afraid that I'm going to look too much like a "Karen" with a stacked bob or wake up looking like an angry porcupine the next day. Akasha gave me a super cute bob which met and exceeded my hair expectations. She was also very cool and friendly as well. Also people with thick, straight, dense and coarse hair, Akasha should be your go to person. My hair can look too heavy or torn up at the ends after a hair appointment. Scheduling (and rescheduling) is always a breeze. It's perhaps on the pricier side for some people but I generally think it's on par with similar salons. I'm not really the type to write reviews but when i say this is the best hair salon i've probably been to, believe it. I've had my fair share of bad haircuts growing up. I'm also asian and so i get that the different hair types are hard to deal with in terms of hair cutting and styling. The atmosphere and the store itself was aesthetically pleasing and I love it. It felt very welcoming and it smelled really nice in there (not the stereotypical hair chemical smells at all). I'm here for work related business and needed a haircut because the frizz in my hair from the temperature and humidity wasn't it for me. I got lucky and was able to get an apothecary treatment appointment for today during my stay here. Hannah had done such a lovely job on my hair and did what i wanted. It wasn't cut too short, the curtain bangs are just right, and she did such a wonderful job on fixing the layering i had that grew out. The scalp massage was also so good i could've been put back to sleep. If i had lived here, i would be coming back to the same salon for the same hairstylist long term. I received one of the best hair cuts I've ever gotten and everyone was super friendly. I had been meaning to come back for a while, so naturally I booked an appointment here when it came time for some fresh highlights and a spring hair cut. I'm pretty new to color treatments so I never know how to explain what I'm looking for. My stylist Georgy, however, absolutely knows her stuff. I gave her a very vague description of what I wanted my highlights to look like and told her to cut as much or as little hair as she thought would be best. She made suggestions to fill in the gaps, worked efficiently, explained every part of her process, and was super kind. I have had my hair cut and balayages done at Mirror & Mantel for the last two years and I enjoy my experience each time! I have had Georgy, Akasia (I think I misspelled it, sorry!) and Kitty do my hair coloring and each have done an amazing job! I bring pictures of the look I am going for and they nail it each time. The only downside is it is pricey to get it done here ($205 for my last balayage and that is without tip). Otherwise they do a great job and the salon is very cute. read more

Kitty is excellent! Very happy with my haircuts. I was very sad to leave my old hairdresser when I moved to Philly but so happy to have found Kitty nearly right away. I come here regularly for a trim and glaze, and my hair has been so healthy and happy ever since. The space is small but comfortable. I've seen customers bring their dogs, ask to wear masks, etc., so it's clear the staff is very accommodating and friendly. My mom has started coming here too! Found my new salon! So happy I decided to try this place out! I don't normally write reviews but it was hard for me to pull the trigger on a new salon and some places have given me anxiety in the past so maybe this will help others. My stylist of over three years moved her business and I had been putting off finding someone/somewhere new for most of the pandemic. After looking through lots of salons in the area it seemed like most places had steep quotes for simple dry cuts, and all other services (like wash and blow-dry) were a la carte and also... pricey. And then I found Mirror and Mantel! It clearly lists services priced by stylist-level, and their haircuts comes with a consultation, scalp massage, wash/blow-dry. The receptionist who answered the phone (I feel bad I don't recall her name) didn't sound like any of the other salons I had spoken to who had made me feel like I was imposing by asking what their earliest availability for a haircut was. This woman was bright, friendly, and instantly gave me a comforting vibe. And I was delighted to be able to snag a cancellation for the following morning. I arrived right before my appointment and was warmly greeted by the receptionist. My stylist, Akasha, introduced herself to me right on time (if not a couple minutes earlier). The whole experience was great; quality service in an approachable atmosphere. We had a little consult and then I was put at ease with a scalp massage and hair wash. Akasha was very friendly and easy to talk to. She also made a point of taking off less in the beginning to be safe and then asked me if I wanted more off various times throughout the cut. Was in desperate need of a haircut a few weeks ago, and found this salon through Yelp! They ended up having a last-minute appointment available the next day, which worked out perfectly. The salon was so cute, and my haircut turned out wonderful. The stylist asked me how I felt about the length and each layer that she cut, and was more than willing to make adjustments along the way. We finished up with a quick blow-out, and she even made sure the layers looked just as great dry. My hair looks super healthy and still has the length I want. I love Mirror & Mantel! I've been coming here for haircuts since 2018 and am a loyal customer who recommends this salon to all my friends and family. My mom is also a regular. My favorite thing about Mirror & Mantel is that the stylists really listen and follow through with whatever I request, but are also extremely open, up front, and honest about what they can realistically do to hair on any given day. For example, many salons cut off way too much hair when you just want a little trim, but this has never happened to me here. When I went to get highlights, my stylist Nicole let me know that it would be very damaging to go is dramatically light as I wanted in one session, let me know what she could do that day, and I left delighted with the gorgeous color I got. I moved to the city summer of '21 and found Mirror and Mantel from Yelp....naturally :) I called for a trim, got an appointment with Kitty and basically I am her's forever lol. I have fine, short hair and she is just magic - I never have to inspect my hair upon leaving or at home. I also recently had an upcoming job interview and casually mentioned in conversation that I was trying (unsuccessfully) to remove the blue from my hair (again, came in just for a cut) and she said something like, "well, let me try [insert professional hair product / technique]" and it sat in my hair for 7 minutes and it was out! I was honestly floored. I knew the blue was stubborn, but damn - it looks great! Still rocking the result and just feel grateful I'm in such blessed, talented and happy hands. It's been a month or two since my last visit to Mirror & Mantel, and I want to say upfront that the service when I was there was absolutely impeccable, the people were very kind, and my stylist really did her best to listen to what I wanted and give me what I requested. Super great atmosphere at this salon. Absolutely zero complaints on that front. I'm writing this review just to make it clear to others, because it wasn't clear to me when I first emailed to inquire about services. I emailed with very specific asks: I said I had very dark Asian hair, and that I wanted to go blonde. I asked for an estimate of how much that would cost, and if they had stylists who had experience with Asian hair. I was directed to the website with the prices, and informed that all the stylists had a lot of experience with different kinds of hair. I was happy to hear this, and very surprised (but happy!) that the prices seemed super reasonable. I booked it. When I got there, I'd only been booked for two hours, which I guess is the standard, and which is definitely not enough time to go blonde! But that hadn't been made clear to me from my initial inquiry, although I'd asked a few questions. So I did want to make that clear in this review to people considering getting color done. I needed two visits to go blonde, which ended up costing me double what I had expected based on my initial inquiry. Second, as sweet and as talented as my stylist was, the tone isn't quite right, and sadly, my hair feels awful, is falling out, and still smells bad a month from the salon visit. I've gone blonde before and my hair quality wasn't affected the way it is now. I truly think that if you want highlights, this is a great place to go. But if you have Asian hair and want to go super blonde, an Asian hairdresser might be a better bet. Amazing things about the salon: my hair stylist was very responsive, they gave away little tubs of body butter to apologize for construction going on while I was there (very sweet gesture), coffee and tea on the house, they gave me a discount on my second visit, everyone is nice!! I actually feel awful writing this review because I loved being in the salon. But after living with my hair for a month and trying to love it I have to admit that I'm really unhappy with it. So that's it -- tldr; wonderful place with great people, but be sure you're clear on what they're booking you for, and maybe go somewhere else if you have my type of hair and want to go blonde. read more

My experience from booking to walking out looking GORGEOUS was absolutely phenomenal. I really really needed a hair cut and a refresh on highlights. I decided to reach out for an appointment using yelp request and I lucked out. The owner responded right away and told me I could take over a cancellation appointment the next day! The salon is beautiful and clean, one of the first things I noticed is that the receptionist was very pregnant and they were training a replacement for her. I loved watching all of the girls help this new girl, they were all so patient and kind with her - and that really shined through the whole appointment, it certainly is a wonderful group of people who work here. My appointment started right on time with Kitty. She listened to me and really understood what I was saying. I had a bad highlight previously and it had been far too long since my last cut so my ends were GROSS. Kitty suggested a blunt cut - this would give me the volume I'm looking for and better ends all around. At first I was very hesitant because I've had the same cut for ever, she pulled up pictures on her phone and explained that it would do exactly what I wanted my hair to do. I am so glad I trusted her - she is a true professional and a very gifted artist. I'm so glad I found Mirror & Mantel - Kitty is such a talented colorist, and I love how my hair turned out! I've previously had some questionable results at Philly area salons, so I was a little nervous about trying a new one, but Mirror & Mantel delivered! The color is blended very nicely, and my hair doesn't feel damaged or crunchy at all despite being lightened quite a bit. I actually went back the next day for a little bit more toner at the crown of my head, and Kitty was super understanding and even explained that because she applied the toner on dry hair, it should last about 4 months rather than the usual 2-3. She'd also previously advised that on my next appointment I could likely get away with a partial balayage instead of a full. I appreciate that Kitty really had her clients' interests in mind, and wasn't pushing me to get more involved / more frequent services just to drum up business. read more

Before I moved to DC, LB worked her magic on my hair for almost 2 years. I loved her, and she (and Mirror and Mantel in general!) is one of the reasons I was sad to move away from Philly. She could cut layers into my hair that would last me almost 6 months - my last cut from her got me compliments about 4 months out from my previous haircut, and 3 weeks prior to my next one. Before I moved, I got married (woo!). LB did my hair, and it was gorgeous (see pic I'm going to add here momentarily). She spent a lot of time with me at my appointment prior to the big day, and she carefully listened to what I wanted. She created the style, I loved it, and then she recreated it perfectly on the day of the wedding. My bridesmaids all loved their cuts too - Katie and Cecily made my ladies look fabulous. We looked incredible, but I also have to give a shout out to Katie for the atmosphere and the coffee. She let me bring in a big urn from Rival Bros. down the street, and she even let us leave it there so a Rival Bros. barista could pick it up at the end of the day. Akasha most recently did my cut and balayage - she truly listened to what I wanted, collaborated with me in describing the color, and made sure everything was as I wanted it. Timely: -I've only had my hair done by Kelly since I read so many great things about her on yelp. She is very popular so I would recommend trying to book her at least a month out if not more. She's always on time with our appointments. Attentive: -the first time I came in to see her it was 1.5 months prior to my wedding and I decided to I wanted to get some color added closer to my roots. I was terrified as it was so close to my wedding and I wanted it to look natural. She spent 20 minutes discussing with me my options and I never felt like she was trying to over charge me. I was at the point where I was so sick of my current hairstyle that I was ready cut it myself.. would not have been a great look. They were able to get me in very quickly (within a week). I love Mirror & Mantel. I go to clean up my ends about every 3 months and I see LB every time I go. She does a fabulous job cutting my hair. I have normally straight (some times wavy with the recent humidity) and she does a phenomenal job at blending the layers to give my hair some volume without it looking too choppy! The consult is usually really thorough even though I usually get the same thing done and I walk out each time feeling so great about my hair that I don't mind spending a little more than other salons charge. It's worth the extra penny! The salon itself is really nice too. It's quaint and kept very clean; the receptionist is very professional. The waiting area is a little small, but I've never had to be there for more than 5 minutes. I think what I like the most is that the stylists are in the back when they're not working on clients. I've been to a few other salons where the stylists are always out on the floor, which is ok for the most part. But it's not fine when you distract the person working on my hair. The products that they use are great too and I find it refreshing that I'm never pressured into buying something at the end of the appointment. I found my new salon! I've dreaded the day that my girl in Jersey can no longer do my hair, so I had to find a salon good enough for my hair cuts and several shades of color and highlights, for a reasonable price. That is a hard ask in center city Philly. The good salons are too expensive, and the affordable salons are not good enough. After reading nearly one hundred reviews of Mirror & Mantel (I know, I'm crazy, but I can't let my hair be ruined again!), I decided I would entrust my hair to Kelly. I read about several other highly qualified stylists here, so I'm sure anyone can do a great job, but after counting the number of great reviews about Kelly, and for my hair type & style, she was my pick. Of course she is probably the most senior stylist because I had to book 2-3 months in advance to get on her list, and it was an afternoon appointment so I had to leave work early. She does have evening appointments, but those are probably 4 months wait list. Its OK though, because she was so amazing that it was worth the wait. She listened to the type of color I wanted, compared to the faded year-old color that was stuck in my hair. I showed her some pictures, and then she showed me a big board full of fake hair strands of different colors so I could see all the different shades. That was awesome, I've never seen that before! But, she wanted to make sure it was right. The end product was so relieving, I got exactly the hair I wanted, and more! The color was perfect, she ended up doing 2 colors, blonde highlights underneath a reddish brown, then added a glaze on top. The cut was even better than expected - I usually get an angle toward the face with some long layers, but Kelly suggested a 'reverse bob' instead of long layers so it gives my hair a fuller look, which was totally true! I loved the hair cut so much, that I came back to her months later to get it cut and colored again the exact same way. She is amazing, takes so much time to understand her customer, and delivers an A++++ final result. The salon is very cute and inviting, the front desk lady who books the appointments is very patient. I had emailed her back and forth several times trying to find a date/time that worked for me (since my work schedule is not very flexible and I was traveling a lot). She was a great help. The price was not as heartbreaking as other top quality salons in the city, which is also a plus. My first appointment (cut + 2 colors + glaze) was around $200, and my second appointment (cut + 1 color) was $150. I can't afford to get my hair done every 9-12 weeks so I will just wait longer in between appointments. But M&M and Kelly has totally won me over, and I will continue coming back here every time. I am terrified of haircuts and have had extremely long, wild, dark wavy hair my entire life. I was so nervous (but ready) to cut 10 inches off my hair and get it dyed for the first time ever. I spent hours researching photos from different salons in Philly, and almost decided to go to New York for this cut, but I'm so glad I didn't. Alexa listened to my scatterbrained description of what I wanted my cut (turns out it's a long-bob) and color (peach-colored balayage) to look like, and knew exactly what to do. Not only did she make me feel comfortable, check in with how I was feeling frequently, and give me an amazing cut and color that I am obsessed with, she did it quickly and with amazing professionalism. I feel like a new person and I am so happy I went to Alexa. I must also say that every single person in the salon on that busy Friday left looking fantastic and very happy. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the stylists here. I urge you to go to Alexa for color, though, since she was so knowledgeable and had such perfect execution. When the salon started it was good but has gone downhill. Was a regular client but no longer. A few examples: 1. One time they called me to say running 5 mins late. I checked it was only 5 mins as I had other appointments and offered to reschedule - they said no need. Turned out to be 30 mins late. As the previous client left, she said to Katie (hairdresser) "oh thanks for squeezing me in last minute" -- so clearly they didn't care that I had an appointment / were making me late. 2. One time normally chatty hairdresser barely said a word to me / was surly... I asked 'oh you're quiet today' -- 'oh i don't feel like talking' (despite happily chatting to the other hairdressers in the salon, just being weird with me). As I was leaving asked Amy the receptionist if all OK, since I was concerned --- nope, turns out just being weird and bitchy. 3. Initially was a nice greeting, take my coat, offer coffee or water (usual for an expensive salon). Last 3-4 visits no greeting, no coffee, no offer to take my coat. Haircut remained good but the atmosphere and the professionalism noticeably dropped in the last year, so I have stopped going. read more
