Having moved from NY and landing in the Brandywine area, I used City Search, Yelp, reading all the fantastic reviews that Joey had and chose Joey Rose. Joey Rose, who is the owner of Rinse, is an absolutely phenomenal cutter and colorist. You cannot get an appointment with him unless you are referred by a current client. He is almost always fully booked. Joey had been cutting my hair for approximately 10 years, (having followed him from another salon before he opened Rinse) and it was never a bad cut. He took my short hair and as it was growing in, it never once looked anything other than perfect and easy to repeat myself. Joey is the only haircutter in my adult life, who told me that my hair would never look bad as it was growing out and he made certain that it never did. At that time, Joey had free rein to cut my hair however he wanted to: I trusted him implicitly. If Joey recommended a product, that is what I used. I drove over 100 miles round trip to have my hair cut. But a few months ago, I decided to cut my mid-back length hair short. The reason for this is because of ongoing medical problems with both of my arms that makes it too difficult to keep long hair. I brought a few photos of cuts that I liked, but Joey had a free hand to style the cut, as I always have because he knew my hair. Joey cut my hair three times as we were bringing the look up shorter and each cut was lovely until the last one. It looked absolutely beautiful when I left the salon, but after I washed it for the first time it was impossible to repeat the look that Joey had given me. It probably would have taken 30 minutes or less for Joey to fix the problem. I sent a text to Joey, that included a photo of my hair. His response was to TERMINATE ME AS A CLIENT, using that I could only come in on a fixed schedule as the cause. The fact that I always made anywhere from 3-4 appointments for my future cuts whenever I was in, and having to also work around the, at least 2 vacations that he takes per year, makes this statement specious. Please keep in mind that I was a client of Joey's for almost 10 years. WHAT I BELIEVE IS THE TRUE REASON that Joey terminated both my husband and myself as clients is because he was not making enough money when we came in. I believe that he wants only clients that are having coloring, or other processes done, as well as cutting and blowouts and spending more than $100 when they were in the salon, for just one person per 4-6 weeks. Summing up: IN MY OPINION, if you can get an appointment with Joey you will have a beautiful haircut, color or whatever process you are having done. But if you want him to keep you as a client, be ready to invest. Or maybe it was because, as the salon owner, he wasn't tipped.... read more

I went here purely because of the other Yelp reviews of the place. I live nearby and usually it's pretty rare to have a 5 star average with 20-something reviews... I expected to have to wait for an appointment and was willing to do so but to my surprise they put me in the very next day after I called. yay! It's a little place with only a few stylists; it's cozy and comfortable without being pretentious, that's probably what I loved the most. A lot of tiny salons have such big egos that I feel like I'm not even cool enough to be in there.... Rinse was welcoming and calm. Michele was my stylist and I'll definitely be going to her from now on. I was really just there for a trim and some layers, so nothing too involved but she was giving me recommendations for new things I could try, like some sort of hair straightening/relaxer process that she tried on her own hair and I really appreciated that she wasn't just trying to sell me something.. she was saying that she did it herself and loved it. I feel a little strange sometimes when I'm getting my hair cut because I DON'T like to strike up conversation. It's nothing against anyone, I just really like to sit there and relax and have my moment of quiet while someone plays with my hair. At most salons they make me feel obligated to create small talk but Michele was totally cool and just doing her thing. It was nice to see how the other stylists interacted with their clients, as well. Some girl came in for just a bang trim (which looked awesome, by the way) and she was talking to her stylist about not being able to put her hair up in a bun like she wanted to, and he immediately offered to show her a bunch of styles she could do easily. I liked that. Rinse will be my go-to place from now on. I even told them about all the great reviews on here. Michele said she didn't like to read reviews because seeing a bad one can ruin a day but I swear... I couldn't think of anything bad to say about her ever! read more

Really great people and really great work. Hair always turns out amazing! The atmosphere is very cozy and relaxed. There's never any reason to panic about the results here unlike many other places. My stylist was Michelle. She has always been able to create amazing color on my stubborn black asian hair...WITHOUT BLEACHING. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants beautiful, easy to maintain, natural results. read more

I've been going to Rinse for about a year now - after moving to Philly two and a half years ago from SF, I spent the first year and half floundering around from salon to salon trying to find a decent one. Then Yelp led me to Rinse... THANK GOD! Michelle is amazing - I've only had cuts, no color, but she does an amazing job. I have wavy hair and all of her cuts have looked amazing, whether I'm wearing my hair straight or curly. She's also very fun and personable - going to get my hair cut feels like going to see a friend! The biggest beef about this place seems to be the cancellation policy... and I have to say that I FULLY back the cancellation policy at Rinse. I usually have to book my appointments two weeks in advance because it's such a popular salon and they only have three stylists. When you make an appointment, the stylist is making time for you just as a doctor would. But unlike a doctor, the stylists at Rinse do not overbook so when you no-show, you're taking $$$ out of their pockets and taking a spot the rest of us dedicated clients would LOVE to have! So to the Haters and Cancelators, sorry about your life - don't take it out on Rinse by bitching on Yelp when you haven't even had a haircut yet! Peace! read more

I LOVE Rinse I LOVE Katie Even More! I can easily say Katie's given me my Favorite haircut to date! I went in timid and just for a trim but Katie asked me if there was anything I'd like to try. My sister spoke up for me and said I wanted Bangs but other stylists told me it wasn't possible due to my hairline. Katie pish-poshed that notion and said I could totally do it. I explained I didn't want a fobby blunt, heavy or "cockroach" bangs. I wanted a haircut that I could roll out of bed with, I hate using hair products (blowdryers included). Katie didn't push me but encouraged me to try something new. I took a breath and said okay and off she went! I ended up with a gorgeous long bouncy layered cut with slanted wispy bangs (which I could grow out into side swept bangs). Never in my life have I received more compliments on my hair. I wish I lived in Philly, just so Katie could always cut my hair! Special Thanks to my Sis for recommending Katie and Huge Hugs to Katie for making me feel Beautiful :) read more

I love Rinse. The atmosphere is SO relaxing. The stylists can do pretty much anything, and they are so personable. I also really love the products they use. They make my hair so soft and healthy. Katie does such a good job on my hair. She always listens to what I want, while still giving good input. You can tell she really knows what she's doing. I love that it never feels rushed in this salon, like they have plenty of time to spend doing whatever is necessary to make their customers happy. I also like that Katie doesnt look for extra ways to suck all the money out of my wallet like other stylists in the city. It's not the cheapest hair cut and color I've gotten, but you definitely get what you pay for. I've never left here unhappy. read more

Three things you should know about me: 1. I've spent my entire life under the impression that my hair is inherently greasy (and frizzy and untamable and evil and unmanageable.....), 2. I had super short hair for about 10 years and only started to grow it out two years ago, 3. The last woman who cut my hair was my mother. It's been men ever since. Katie at Rinse changed everything! I showed up at 10am last Tuesday morning (life of a grad student...) and was welcomed into a small cheery salon. I drank tea and listened to light background music while Katie cut my hair. She then taught me the appropriate way to blow dry my hair (10 years of super short hair remember) and proceeded to finish with a dry cut (much better since my hair is absurd and I may have a few cowlicks). All the while she was chatty (but not fake) and was extraordinarily helpful in explaining to me that my hair isn't greasy and that by washing my hair too frequently I was actually making it frizzier. So what did I learn? 1. My hair doesn't have to be greasy (or frizzy or untamable or evil and unmanageable.....) with the right care, 2. Long hair can can be awesome and sexy, 3. Women will once again be cutting my hair - just not my mother! I know $65 isn't cheap for a cut but I'll definitely be returning for future cuts and life/hair lessons from Katie! read more

I am sooooo happy I found rinse!!!!! Recently, I found myself in the market for a new hair salon. (See my review history if you'd like to know about the old salon). I heard about Rinse though a friend and decided it was worth a shot. I knew I was home when I sat in the chair and Katie (best ever!!!) took one look at my hair and sort of made this distressed face. She asked me what I didn't like about my current cut and when I said "everything" she agreed in this refreshing straight forward no BS sort of way. I have short hair À la early Liza and I can never seem to convey to the stylist how I want it to look. As a result I end up with Catholic schoolboy in the front, US Marine on the sides and Billy Ray Cyrus in the back, but those day are over my friends. I barely raised my hands to explain what I wanted done before Katie stopped me and said that so many stylists end up cutting female sort hair with a men's haircut because they are afraid of sort hair (true!) and that she loved cutting sort hair. She spoke about all of the ways she was going to deal with my heads many problem areas without me even having to explain what and where they were. She is amazing. Rinse is slightly higher in price then I usually shell out for a haircut, but over the years I constantly seem to relearn the age old lesson; you get what you pay for. I was in Rinse for about an hour and was not disappointed with the work I saw from any of the stylists long or short cuts alike, but I highly recommend for short hair! The product brand they use is also awesome, I plan on going with that pomade when I'm through with what's left of my current brand. Relaxed un-pretentious atmosphere is also a breath of fresh air. read more

I just created a yelp account specifically to review this salon. Yelp got me there, so I figured I'd pay it back. I got Michele because she had an opening & was prepared with the help of yelp reviews to expect laid back, small salon, etc. I definitely got it. The place is tiny - in a really good way. Three chairs, three stylists, one receptionist. That means that there aren't any more than 7 of you in there at once. So cozy and laid back. I was offered a drink the second I walked in, and Michele was already waiting on me. I just moved to Philly and my hair was in need of major repair since I hadn't found a salon yet and I was five months into not having my hair touched. Michele didn't pick up a pair of scissors until we'd talked about what my hair issues were and what she'd be doing that day for about five minutes. Each of them does their own appointments from the washing to the drying, which is so nice. My cut turned out great and Michele was just really pleasant to work with. Huge bonuses: Like I said I'm new to town, so I asked for some suggestions for nails, eyebrows, etc. and Michele wrote them all down for me, and swore by them. I went for a manicure afterward (Rittenhouse Nails) and loved it, too. I'll be a regular there now - bonus! I was given tips about how to style an annoying front part I've always had trouble with, and was promised bangs (which I've never been able to do) in the fall - bonus! I was given a great suggestion for a hair dryer that would help with some breakage I've been having - bonus! After coming from a production line type of salon working up to 30 clients at a time with 20 hair dressers and 10 assistants, and a stylist who spent my appointments describing the intimate details of his trans coastal phone sex dates, this was so refreshing. I'm even sending my shaggy haired boyfriend to visit Katie who does mens hair. A+ read more

Ari is a total diamond and my best kept secret at feeling good about myself everyday. She has taken the time to chat with me about what I want my hair to look like that day and what I'm hoping to achieve long term (i.e. I want "x" haircut today and want to grow it into "y" style later this summer) and we figure out how to make that happen. I walk in feeling drab, walk out feeling a million times chicer and prepared for the many compliments I get on my hair :) The added perks are that the salon itself is lovely, the staff friendly, and Ari is a most pleasant companion to chat away the minutes with! read more

I'm so glad that Yelp led me to Joey. Since I'm the one with "easy" hair, I'm the guinea pig for any and all hair excursions (my hair's very fine, very straight, tolerates just about any abuse, and dense). It was, however, in desperate need of a trim last month: I normally trim it myself, but it's getting long enough that it needed a good 3" lopped off and I didn't want to come into work looking like a crooked trainwreck. Enter Joey. I told him hey, I'm up for whatever. He played with my hair for a few minutes, took his time talking to me, took me back for a wash and told me his game plan. An hour later I had gorgeously structured loose, face-framing layers (not too long, not too short) and just enough length off without losing too much. Namely, Joey did right by my hair, and we agreed that in the winter we might lop it all off for fun and games since in the summer it's just easier to put it up and out of the way. All the staff (well, all three of 'em) were super-nice and the salon is warm, cozy, and inviting. Next I sent in my better half, whose Mediterranean-like hair (thick, wavy, lustrous) destroys stylists' scissors like they're made of butter. She's pickier than I am, I think, and her hair is harder to work with. Joey once again did an amazing job. So yes, try this place. You'll come back, like I will. It's that good. Also, we both agree that Joey has the most amazing hands: as he's cutting, styling, and just plain playing with it, it's almost like you're getting reiki or something. Magic hands, great sense of humor, and such a sweet personality. Can't wait for the next trim! read more

Joey rocks. He kept checking and recutting (while wet, after being dried, after styling) to make sure there were no strays. I was in a desperate place- hair had not been cut in over six months due to travel and a disappointing last experience. So happy I came here. Super chill, no attitude. Great for the neighborhood. read more

Happy to add another five star review to this awesome salon. Everything everyone else has been saying is true...awesome atmosphere, super laid back and friendly staff, and amazing hair cuts. I had Ari as my stylist, and she was awesome to talk to and did a fantastic job on my been-to-long-without-a-cut hair. She explained what she wanted to do and taught me some styling tips and was really easy going...not pretentious or intimidating like some salons/stylists can be. Yes, they do have a strict cancellation policy, but after I booked the appointment I got a text telling me the details, and the day before someone called me to confirm so, really not hard to stay on top of it. There's a reason this place gets such awesome reviews! Best salon in Philly! read more

Joey is the best. He has been cutting my hair for over 15 years (since I was 12!). Despite a 3 hour drive here from my current home in Connecticut, I still come here for hair cuts (and fun color, sometimes). Michelle and Ari are excellent, too. The salon is lovely- small but not claustrophobic- and tastefully designed. Can't recommend Rinse enough. Honestly, come here for a haircut. They listen to you, actually look at your hair/face/head, and skillfully cut your hair. After Joey, Ari or Michelle cut your hair, you'll never trust anyone else. read more

Several years ago, I was fortunate enough to come across a rave review about Joey's skill set and demeanor. I was hesitant to book an appointment at first, since my last few cuts from my previous stylist, of almost 5 years (who I drove 3+ hours to see), were sub-par, at best; I had also recently experienced some health issues that took a toll on my hair, so I was feeling less than confident. I decided to take a chance, and booked an appointment with Joey - I am SO GLAD I did!! He showed me that no matter what state my hair was in, with his careful eye, keen skill set, some patience and a whole lot of TLC, he could help make my hair fabulous again. When you're in his salon, it's as if you're at a cozy family gathering. The salon is tastefully designed to make it feel like home, and the staff are talented, friendly and inviting. Joey takes his time to thoroughly understand your vision and needs, and meticulously cuts each strand with care and ease. He communicates clearly to ensure you both are on the same page, and offers his expertise with thoughtful recommendations. Joey goes out of his way to make sure you are completely satisfied before and after you leave his chair. His warm, fun-loving, playful spirit makes the experience a dream! He is a true artist, and master at what he does, and I am so thankful for him! Words fail to express how WONDERFUL Joey and the Rinse family are!! read more

If you are looking for another Giovanni & Pileggi, Pierre & Carlo, or Phoenix Salon and Spa... you are in the wrong place. rinse is fantastic, they have three stylists, Joey, Michele, and Katie and they all work wonders. I have been going to Katie for years and she can do anything you want and really takes her time. They do not overbook or work through other clients at the same time you are there. There are no assistants and you get complete one on one time with your stylist. The salon is small but is well decorated has lots of light and great art that they change frequently. They are friendly, personable, and fun. If you want a great style or color with a more personal touch than some of the larger city salons rinse is your place. read more

Another Allure magazine find! I've been hesitant for haircut since my last cut in July left me feeling underwhelmed but I mustered up the courage and made an appointment with Joey. And boy, was it well worth the wait. Joey took the time to discuss how I style my hair and the products I use. After the cut, my hair looked so healthy and I loved the cut. Thank you Joey! read more

I cannot say enough about Rinse, and my stylist, Joey, is completely amazing! I've been going to him for 10 years, and for good reason. He does my cut and color and, without bragging, it looks awesome every single time. I've never left without feeling and looking amazing. I moved to New York and I come down to Philly every 2 months so that Joey can do my hair. The salon itself is calm and fun and everyone who works there is amazing. I've referred a ton of people to Joey (and Michelle and Ari) and every single person I've ever referred (13 people) is ecstatic and still going (some for 8+ years). All of the 5 Star reviews of this place are spot on! read more

I have now (over the course of a year) gotten haircuts from all three stylists, Michelle, Katie, and Joey. Each haircut was a different cut, so my comparison of them is entirely unfair. You are warned. Michelle - I came to Michelle just wanting a trim. As usual, I hadn't cut my hair for months and my extra thick hair was weighing me down. Michelle did a great job thinning it out and layering it. I was very pleased. Katie - I was ready for a change. I had long hair and I was sick of it. I would wear it up every day. I wanted a bob. I asked for one, and I got what I want. My problem was -- I didn't realize that when my thick, thick hair was cut to my chin, it would pouf out toward the ends and I would end up looking like a local news anchor (minus the makeup and hairspray). Definitely not Katie's fault. And if I put enough product in it, I could sometimes weigh it down enough to look normal. Joey - a-MAZ-ing. I have never been so impressed with someone cutting my hair. I mean that. My hair was getting to an in-between length, halfway between my chin and shoulders. I came in thinking maybe I wanted bangs, if Joey thought they would work. But mainly, I wanted to figure out a way to get rid of the anchorwoman pouf, if at all possible. Joey took charge. He told me that layering it too much would probably make the pouf worse, but slight layering around the ends might help. As for the bangs, he thought they would look great but recommended starting with long side-swooping bangs so that I could try them out. He then worked his magic. I left with an amazing cut. Anchorwoman gone. Other notes: - free bang trims in between appointments - Joey must be booked at least 6 weeks in advance read more

I found Rinse Salon after the terror of needing to find a new hair stylist in short order. I read literally every review of Yelp five star rated salons in Center City and decided on Rinse. I have been with Ari for a few years and she is not only a great stylist but a gem of a person. I am not good at styling my hair and she has shown me step by step on how to do it. She also has consistently tailored my hair cut to my skills, my hair type, and my lifestyle. Most importantly, Ari has eliminated my former dread of sitting in the chair and getting my hair cut. I highly recommend Rinse if you are on the lookout for a new salon, you will not be disappointed. read more

I want to start with saying I would recommend Ari to anyone for both great cut and color. I've been coming to Ari for about the last year or so. I originally came for a hair cut after trying to grow out my hair from a bad cut experience before. Since then I've been getting both color and cut with her and it's the best my hair has ever looked and felt. Most recently I had balayage done and it looks so natural. More importantly it feels SO healthy. My hair is very fine and in the past any sort of highlights would just fry it even when I've been to nice salons. With hair cuts I appreciate that she always got my personal style and and gave and helped me maintain a great angled bob. I recently accepted a job offer on the west coast and have to say I'm going to miss coming to Ari to get my hair done. Not only is she a super talented stylist, but she really paid attention to me as a person and remembered things i told her at appointments months before. With the amount of people stylists see on a daily basis, that's actually amazing. I felt more like I was coming to hang out with a friend and as a bonus had a sick hair style when leaving. Now that being said, I will say, yes, Rinse is pricey. However when compared with some of the better salons in cities like New York & the west coast, and the fact that they're so talented and committed to service, it's well worth it. I used to work as a front desk coordinator for a salon in college and learned that with hair you really get what you pay for so to me it's been worth it. I'm going to miss you, Ari! read more

My daughter and I stopped by Rinse salon to see if they had an appointment for a shampoo and blow dry. The lady right away said that they were completely booked up. I told her that I needed an appointment a week later - and her response without looking at her schedule is that they are so busy that they are not taking any new clients. I called several salons in the same neighborhood all of them had appointments. Seemed to me that she just was being racist and did not want to do our hair. It seemed odd that all the salons in the neighborhood had availability for 2 appointments but they did not have time for one shampoo blow dry a week later. This just confirmed my experience. read more

Rinse is the solution to every woman's hair dilemma. Affordable, trendy, fashion-forward and fun. When you enter the salon, it feels funky without being pretentious. All the stylists are fabulous and entertaining. Michele rocks with high-lites and can cut even the thickest of hair (mine). Last but not least, the stylists handle everything (no need to try to remember how much to tip the shampoo girl). read more

I moved to Philly recently and have been looking for a good salon. Rinse was awesome. I sat down in the chair and ramble about how I need to change my hair but wasn't sure what to do. I just moved to Philly a few weeks ago and needed a haircut desperately! I turned to yelp and found Rinse, and I'm SO glad I did! I had my hair cut by Michele, and she was awesome! Very nice and friendly. After I told her that I'd only been in Philly for about 2 weeks, she gave me some excellent advice about where to go eat, shop etc. and what to do here in the city! The atmosphere of Rinse is really pleasant and relaxed as well. The decor is really pretty, and when I got my haircut Michele and I were actually the only ones in the whole salon (which is small...only 3 chairs) because everyone else happened to have the day off. It really made me feel like I was getting special treatment. I love my haircut and will definitely be returning to Rinse in the future! read more

I recently moved from Fl to Philadelphia, and was hoping to find a great hair salon. After turning to yelp, I decided to give rinse a try - and I am SO glad I did. I loved everything about my appointment. Ari was my stylist, and not only did she do a wonderful job coloring and styling my hair, but she was so sweet and fun as well. Being that I'm new to town, she gave tons of recommendations for restaurants and bars I need to try out which I really appreciated. Not only is Ari amazing, but the salon owner Joey is great as well. I recently moved to Philadelphia and totally lucked out when I called Rinse to see when their earliest available appointment was and Michelle had just had a cancelation. I rushed my butt down to Rinse and fell in love. It's a really sweet salon. It's tiny, just 3 chairs, but has so much character and feels so intimate. On just a personal level I just love Michelle-- she's so real, so cool... but more importantly she does great hair. She really takes her time to understand what I want and delivers every time. I've been so happy with my hair ever since I started seeing her. Great cut, GREAT color. I also love the size of the salon and that there are only three chairs. The three seem like family-- there's a very warm vibe in the salon and everyone chit chats. I'm happy to have found this gem. read more

Joey Rose is the best stylist I have ever had. He's so welcoming and down to earth and extremely talented. I have moved around alot in the last 5 years and it had been a long time since I had a hairdresser who I could trust completely. Went to a Rinse on a whim since my regular salon was booked and I was desperate for a cut. Luckily they had one appointment left and that was with Ari. I cannot stress enough how pleasant my whole experience was. The salon itself, as everyone else has mentioned, is small, clean, pretty, and bright but comfortable. I was offered a drink immediately and my wait was very short. Ari was like my long lost best friend and to boot my hair looks phenomenal. I have a lion's mane of waves but she was able to effortlessly give me exactly what I'd hoped for. In short- go here. I know the other two stylists must be amazing reading the reviews, but if you have the opportunity definitely give Ari a chance. She will make you sublimely happy I guarantee it. :) read more

I have been going to Joey for 5 years, and he is the only person I will let touch my hair. It went from dried-out, split hay to soft locks over time under his care. Joey is not just a great stylist, but also an incredible human being. He has integrity in his business and has high standards for the work he does. He never tries to sell me on something, either - in fact, when I first started going there, he advised against procedures/highlighting that would have earned the salon more money but that would have messed up my hair in the long run - something no other stylist has ever done. It's strange that one or two disgruntled people can make a consistently 5-star review average go to 4 1/2, even if one of the reviewers never actually got her hair cut there, but I guess that is the way it works. I have never been anything short of blown away by the work he does. The other stylists there also do great work - so anyone you see will leave you with a great head of hair! read more

Joey is amazing! I would trust anything he suggested I do with my hair. If he told me to get a perm, I'd do it.

My hairdresser, Michelle, gave me a FIVE STAR CUT. She is patient and approachable. I was also impressed that I was able to get an appointment just within a few days of calling, and they texted me to confirm the appointment the day of. The place itself, though, doesn't look as nice as I expected, and it is tiny inside. Considering the higher end rates, I was disappointed with the mediocre interior, although I can imagine rent by Rittenhouse cannot be cheap. Also they don't accept Discover. read more

I really enjoyed my experience at Rinse! Great hair cut, nice atmosphere and good conversation. Would definitely go back!

small place with not much for decor, but none of that really matters to me - all i care about is the quality of the cut for my wavy hair. michele did a great job. i gave it a 4 only because its shorter than i wanted, but it still has the shape that we talked about and i felt like she really listened to what i wanted in that department. as another review said, they are gossipy (i forgot something and when i came back i basically caught them making fun to me) - but hey, we dont go to hair salons to make friends do we? so im definitely going back! plus - they text you the day before to confirm your appointment which is so much easier than the awkward confirmation calls. read more
