Got a great cut from Stephanie after two years of COVID quarantine, before omicron pushed me back into the house again. She did a great job working with my fine, thin hair to give it the illusion of some volume. The salon takes safety seriously, and I appreciated that as well. Everyone was wearing masks, and only those getting services can enter. Kudos to the stylists for creating create cuts, color, and style despite those challenges. First time at Volume, first haircut after covid began and I am very happy with the results. The salon takes all necessary COVID precautions. Temperature check upon entry, social distancing, masks and sanitizing. First time here so I scheduled a haircut and color with any available stylist. I got Brett. He did such an amazing job. It turned out better than I could've imagined. He was able to cut 6-8 inches off while still keeping the length I want. I did the add on conditioning treatment that left my hair shiny and soft. He did a single glaze in the blackest of blacks he could get. Perfect. I am so happy with the results. Will def schedule another appointment with Brett. On top of doing an amazing job it was such a pleasure to chat with him. Friendly, funny and he made the hours fly by. Everyone else was just as friendly as well. Kim T at Volume has been my stylist and friend for almost 12 years. I followed her when she moved locations twice (the first the whole salon moved). I swear she is a genius with hair color. She is part artist and part chemist. I have been so many different shades of red, I don't think either of us can keep track anymore. It's always beautiful. Kim constantly is studying and taking classes to hone her technique and it shows. She is wildly talented and I am constantly complimented on my color. Her cuts are obviously fantastic too! I have had cancer for about 8.5 years and while I never fully lost my hair, at times it was really thin. Kim has always made me feel good about myself at my worst. I can't tell you how many times I have walked in and said "Kim, I'm a mess. Please fix me." and I leave feeling like a new person. She has always been warm, funny, and empathetic and is truly one of my favorite people. Volume is a great salon and a nice fit for Kim. The whole staff is so nice, talented, and unpretentious. I really respect and appreciate how careful they have been during COVID too. I included a few shades of hair color Kim has done for me over the years. It was my first time at Volume and I couldn't be happier. First of all I really like all the precautions they take to prevent any issues related to Covid: you wait outside (there are chairs), fill in a form and they take your temperature before entering; when inside everyone is wearing a mask and things get sanitized after every use. Amy was great, I showed her a picture of what I wanted and ask for advice she was professional and gave me her advice, we agreed on the type of color and then she worked her magic. I am not super happy with the process of my hair. I like the color, but it was not what I wanted. I asked for no highlights because I hate the look of the streaks. They did a halo highlight, but assured me that it would not looks like the streaky highlights. Guess what, it does. They then put a glaze on it and I honestly don't see a difference in the color that I came in with minus a few highlights in the front. I wanted a lighter version of my hair color and showed pictures and I didn't get anything close to what I wanted.. I also paid for a blowout. Not worth it. My hair was blown dry, but not styled. I like my hair straight and big. I like some teasing. Think it's bigger in texas because your hair eventually flattens to where I want it to be. Did not happen. She teased it but didn't brush it through, so it looked like I had a knot in the back of my head. By the time I got home, my hair was completely flat. Now the price, I had an idea of what it would cost me. I looked at the services price before going. I did some math using different combos of what I would get. She charged be for 2 single process hair colors when I got a glaze and a partial highlight, which should have been less than what I paid. Overall, the color is fine for the start of the summer, but I will be going back to my old hair salon an hour away because I know that I will the exact color that I want and the style that I like. read more

I came here to for hair extensions (tape in) and met Lauren for a consultation. She was so nice and super helpful to find the PERFECT color and length. When the day came for her to put in the extensions, she was very information on how to care for them and super gentle putting them. She's also fun to talk to and never made the experience awkward! I told Katelyn I wanted to keep as much length as possible. I walked out with over two inches cut off, which was over a third of my overall hair length. I happened to book a haircut here because it's close to my favorite restaurant. Super amazing to find street parking RIGHT outside, free after 6:30!! They did plenty of COVID precautions -- waiting outside, doing a survey & temperature check & everyone inside wore their masks properly. It felt very safe. The haircut itself was so fantastic!! I'm writing this review bc who am I to turn down a socially acceptable context to proclaim how gorgeous my hair is. Blame it on my horrific work schedule but I have apparently been in a lull the last few months because a day or so into a lighter week I abruptly became aware of how fucking disgusting my ends were. Combined with the fact that for some reason the end-of-September Philadelphia climate has been akin to the surface of Mercury and the resultant frizz, I needed a butcher/artist to get rid of the horror story on my head EMERGENTLY. It may or may not be apparent but I am not the world's greatest planner. On Wednesday around 11am I decided that I needed a haircut that day or Thursday. SOS. No negotiation. I basically (not as a synonym for "simply" but as an adverb for "basic bitch") came on yelp and tried calling all the most popular places within a reasonable price range. No cigar. I initially glazed over Volume bc on the price list I saw "$50+". If there is a human being on this planet for which the "+" would be applied, it is me. I am just the core of an organism existing purely to provide my hair the means to survive. If I was walking down the sidewalk with an Afghan hound you wouldn't be able to tell us apart. Ultimately desperation set in and I gave them a call. Plus or no plus; what will be, will be. They had an available appointment at 3pm. Sold. Because I'm running out of energy to write this review and I'm sure you're running out of patience to read it, I'll just go over the highlights: -I was offered a beverage by at least 3 different people -my stylist (Christy) was super friendly and courteous -we went over what I wanted ("cut off all the dead shit") and addressed my concerns (not taking off too much length). -very minimal judgment over how long it had been since my last cut -at one point in time one of the hair washers came over to help blow out my hair which drastically reduced my sitting-bored-as-shit-in-that-chair time. I actually don't recall this has ever happened to me before and this was TREMENDOUSLY appreciated. Ultimately my cut defied the laws of physics and appears to be somehow longer than it was when I went in. I still feel like there's some dead shit on the bottom and I'm not in love with that but I really appreciated her trying to keep the length. I blame the remaining dead scragglies on myself for refusing to let go of my 12 year old hair length. My hair looks so fucking good after the blow out that everyone was staring at me on the sidewalk on my way home. Either that or I had a giant booger in my nose. read more

Brett Kuri gave me the best hair cut and style EVER!! I have hair that's part wavy, part lose curl, and part tight curl. My hair will frustrate most stylists. However, Brett is super cool and approached my hair with so much grace and calm and gave me the most perfect hair cut ever. Then he styled it so beautifully for my event later that evening. Had my hair done by Katie and it was amazing! She's incredibly meticulous with her technique and made the whole experience very pleasant and enjoyable. You can tell she's really passionate about what she does. I went for a both a balayage and hair cut. The first time, the hair cut was great but the color came out a little more subtle than I wanted (though still beautiful!), but she made sure I knew I could always come back if I wasn't satisfied. Called in the next day and they put me in for a redo appointment a week later; the receptionist was very kind and understanding. When I went back for the redo, Katie asked me more questions on what I wanted (more color, lighter on the ends) and delivered beyond my expectations! She definitely knows her stuff; had me in and out of there in 2 hours. Best part is, I'm absolutely in love with my hair! I have used volume hair regularly for a couple of years - loved their service, atmosphere and color and cuts on my hair. Unfortunately I called to cancel an appointment I couldn't make as had a sick kid, and they wouldn't flex their policy for me in charging 50%. I was happy to rearrange for any time in the next few weeks. While I understand their policy, i felt real disappointment and upset and not valued as a long term customer at a great but expensive studio. read more

Today I had a great experience with Christy Heisler. She freshened up my hair by evening out the layers and adding some volume and getting rid of the split and dry ends. My hair felt so alive afterwards! Pic speaks for itself! Also, the shampoo (someone else washed my hair but I don't remember her name, unfortunately) was magical! Great head massage! I think the best part was that I decided to get a cut on a whim and they were able to accommodate me immediately. I greatly appreciate that! Also, all the staff is super nice, welcoming, and accommodating, and the salon is nice, clean, homey, and quirky, which I loved! All the STARS!! I've usually found salons to be a little .... snobby. But the people here are sooo nice and kind and truly enjoying what they are doing. The prices are reasonable and their new space on Old City is adorable. Christy Heisler is my stylist here and she's truly wonderful - she has a 'gift' - a vision - a talent. My hair isn't easy to cut with crazy waves and inconsistent curl, and she makes me feel like a movie star when I'm walking out the door ! Her color work is simply genius. I've had long long long hair since I was 12, so when I finally decided to cut it all off I was very particular about where I wanted to get it cut. Diana did an absolutely AMAZING job! She was so detailed and attentive about it. She even cut off a good amount initially before washing it so it wouldn't take too long (it usually takes 20-30min to wash and rinse) to wash. She knew that I loved braids and was very careful to not cut it too short. This is the first time that I've had a dramatic haircut and absolutely loved it! She even put my hair in two French braids after I said that I didn't need it to be styled. I have been recommending her to everyone! Had my hair cut with Stephanie and had a great experience! First off, everyone who works here is really nice. Not pretentious nice, but very nice. They were on time for my appointment and the experience was great. As someone who doesn't color my hair (gasp, I know!) I appreciate someone who does really good cuts. Stephanie really made sure she knew what I wanted and when I needed the edges rounded/softened after the cut, she was happy to oblige. I'm always nervous about going to get my hair done. I get migraines and can't even put my hair up in a ponytail because it will give me a headache... so having someone I don't know mess with my hair never seems like an appealing prospect to me. Despite my mild hair cutting phobia, my hair was far too long and desperately needed a cut, so I nervously called Volume, which is a few blocks from where I live. They were able to fit me in that day, and Lauren Rhodes was the stylist available. I must say that Lauren was extremely accommodating. I told her about my issues with headaches, and she asked me if I had one currently. I told her a little bit, and she suggested using a special shampoo to do my hair that has a nice soothing scent. It was really great, and I think I need to buy this stuff for myself. As for the cut, Lauren did a great job. I don't have the strongest sense of style, and sometimes I feel some hairstylists are pushy (I tend to like my hair shorter in the front, where I'm often told the "in look" is to have it longer in front)... Lauren was definitely not pushy, and worked with me to give me a great look. I love the haircut, and I've gotten tons of compliments from everyone about it! read more

I have followed Kim Taglienti as a stylist for years. She is truly just the best. She always listens and takes time to be sure she's styling your hair exactly how you'd like. She's taken me through many phases of different colors, lengths, etc and I've never been disappointed- I feel great every single time I leave her chair! She is also just a really lovely person who I love to talk with while she's working on my hair. She is hands-down my favorite stylist I've ever had. I'm so happy she joined the team at Volume because they've done an amazing job during Covid keeping things safe and following precautions. Both of them did an amazing job, listened to what I wanted, made great suggestions, and made great conversation. I left LOVING my hair. I've been going to Katie for 2 years now after a dye job gone wrong from another establishment (before and after pictures tell everything). She saved my hair and gave me a beautiful bayalage and I've been going to her ever since 2017. I completely trust her judgement and eye; she knows what colors and cuts compliment me and ones that don't. I am all about Volume Hair Studio after my first (of soon to be many) visits in their 2nd floor studio in Rittenhouse. (Note: Entrance is on 18th street next to Mac Mart) The whole set up is warm and inviting with a cute little reception area where they offer you a drink. I declined as a single glass of wine makes me irresponsibly loose with my hair cut requests. The studio seems to be busy at all times and I made an appointment a week out with Katie. She was so thorough in our initial consultation. I showed her a picture of bangs that I liked on my phone. She obviously knew it was a bad decision but she found a wig with that same cut to give me an idea of what it would look like on my head. (Spoiler: She was right.) She then made her own recommendations and when we were in agreement, she cut my hair beautifully. I will go back and would recommend Katie to anyone. (Especially those with very thick hair.) It's a few hours before my wedding and I just got a call saying the makeup artist has an emergency health situation and has to get a shot during my scheduled appointment, so they wanted me to come in an hour and a half earlier. Earlier? If she's really in pain enough to need to cancel what was agreed upon, why can she come in in that condition to do it earlier? As anyone who's planned a wedding knows, the day of is scheduled to a tee. There is no room for getting my makeup done in the middle of the day when I have other stuff I'm supposed to be doing. When I pointed out I spent a lot of money on trials, I was told "I understand. Weddings are stressful. It's your choice if you want to come in or not." No recourse. No apology. No refund or credit for services. If you don't want to find out you're on your own literally three hours before your wedding -- choose wisely and go somewhere else. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

I'm so incredibly grateful to have found this place! I went to another hairstylist that I normally go to for quick trims and decided to be bold and highlight my hair. Long story short, it was a highlight from hell and I looked like a tiger. Christy did amazing work on my hair and turned my horrendous highlights that I had to cover up with baseball cap into something I cannot stop showing off! Not only that, the studio in general is great and they were able to squeeze me into their schedule the day after the disaster. I moved to the area recently and have been looking for a good salon. I decided to try this place out based on all the great reviews. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the outcome of both the haircut, mini keratin and management response. Haircut = $65 & Mini Keratin Treatment = $75 The haircut was mediocre as I ended up having to cut pieces that were two long. I have never had to do that before going to a professional. The mini keratin treatment did absolutely nothing to my hair. I did not go into the treatment with high expectations of pin straight hair or anything else unrealistic. I was just looking for a reduction in frizz and to relax my curls. Which is what I was told would occur. Neither of these results were produced. I spoke to management a few days afterwards explaining that nothing had changed with my hair. We had a series of time consuming conversations, in order for them to give me the option of redoing the treatment (why would it work the second time is it didn't work the first?), refund me only 20% or apply it to a credit of $250 for a full keratin treatment (that is a lot of money to spend at a place that doesn't guarantee results or stand by the customer). The product used for the mini keratin: Keratherapy Color Lock and Smooth Treatment, bottle is available online for $65. Directions say that the hair is to be 50% blow dried before the product is applied. My hair was only towel dried before the product was applied. I expressed this to management with no response. Needless to say, I opted for the 20% refund = $16.50 as I did not want to deal with the matter any longer. I would have expected for a company to use quality products that produce results. All around this was a disappointing experience. read more
