Paulie has been cutting my hair now for a few years and each time I am thoroughly impressed. I've had a mullet, shaggy hair, bleached bangs, and now have gone completely blonde. She has been able to transform my hair into something amazing every time. The atmosphere is very comfortable and welcoming. Everyone is so nice and they always hype me up. I will stay loyal to this salon as long as Paulie is there. Just a great place in the neighborhood. read more

This is my happy place. I come in unruly and leave gorgeous every time. Kristy, Keeley, and Paulie take such wonderful care of me and make me smile and laugh. This is a place where comfort is provided and you can truly be yourself. And get a great new 'do while you're at it! read more

Coming from Miami to Philly for Valentine's Day, I knew that I wanted to look special for my mans :) As we all know, ya can't just go anywhere as all blowouts are not considered equal. I had no idea of what was around so to Yelp it was! I read some good reviews of F.A.N so I decided to call and make a same day reservation. They answered right away and were able to book me an appointment for 3pm that day- so I was happy. I didn't realize I was literally a few steps from the salon so that was a major plus. The salon itself is very cool. You walk in and automatically the vibe just makes you feel at home. Like, if you had an awesome interior decorator who knew how to make your home look just right ;) My hairstylist was Keeley. She was super sweet and attentive. Even though it was just a blowout, she took the time to talk to me about my hair, how I wear it, treatments - all of it. She was interested in what I was saying about my hair. She was very helpful and the conversation was great. Didn't feel forced or awkward- she was very easy to talk to. Keeley did an amazing job on my hair- great hands! She also suggested I tried some nice beach waves in my hair- I had only ever done stick straight. It was amazing!! I will definitely put this place in my list of places to go if I ever need a trip to the salon! read more

F.A.N. - Hair Salons Near Me - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I needed to transition to a salon in my neighborhood but had been with the same wonderful stylist for years and was very nervous about trying someone new. Kristy has been wonderful, spending a ton of time with me at our consultation and really easing the transition. I've now had 2 color services and a haircut, as well as a blowout, and all have been top notch. My color was perfectly matched, and the "rough dry" included with the a la carte services is worlds better than my best home blowout attempts. The actual blow out was gorgeous as well, and lasted me 3 days with a little dry shampoo. The rest of the staff are also great: Kami gives a splendid head massage at the shampoo bowl, Keely did a terrific brow wax on my first visit, and Tommy keeps the mood upbeat. All are friendly and welcoming. I'm so glad I made the transition to F.A.N. read more

If I could give a rating of -5 stars, I would. I have been going to see Tommy on and off for over 2 years. Sadly, I will not be going back after my last appointment. On Oct 23, I went in for a cut and color. After doing the color, Tommy blow dried my hair and told me we should do the trim next time. I paid the $120 bill and tipped 20% in cash, as usual. When I got home I had a look at the emailed receipt, as I thought it was a bit high for just a color, as it was not a balayage or highlights (just an all over black color to cover the dark brown I had on). I saw that he charged me $45 for blow drying my hair. Confused, I called back the next day and Tommy answered the phone. He became instantly combative and defensive and said since I did not get the cut, he charged me for the blow dry. I explained that it is a bit of a surprise, as he has never charged me for a blow dry. He told me that is a standard charge of the salon - if he just dried my hair it is free, but if he used a brush while blow drying, then it is $45. I mentioned that he has never charged me for it before and he said it was because I would usually get a haircut. I told him that I came in for a haircut which he told me to hold off on, so maybe he could have mentioned the blow dry charge. All I said is that it was "not cool" not to mention the blow dry charge if I was not getting the haircut and he went off on a tangent saying I am attacking him personally and his character and hung up on me. I was not rude, did not raise my voice, nor did I insult him personally or professionally. I called for clarification and got an earful instead. I am disappointed with his behavior and the fact that the salon did not take any steps to try to problem solve. read more

Omg! What a gem! I had the most fabulous cut and color with Tommy. But first, let me backtrack. I've been to salons all over Philly, and my last place was a high end place in Rittenhouse Square. My stylist there left and this opened up in my neighborhood. Door closes, window opens! It is such a cool, open space, yet not pretentious at all. Lots of great accessories for men and women for sale, plus a photography studio. Easy street parking although I can walk there. Had a wonderful time chatting with Andreas, one of the owners, about the neighborhood, Europe, everything! Tommy knows his stuff and took the time to listen to what I wanted and make thoughtful suggestions. The end result: I walked out with a beautiful new color, expert cut, and the feeling that I had really made a connection to the cool people running this place. This is a welcome addition to Kensington and really, Philadelphia...two thumbs up!!! read more

Such an amazing space. Guaranteed - you will become just a little bit cooler and more stylish from even just walking into the place. Not only is the environment and decor inspiring - from the photography on the walls to the vintage furniture everywhere, but they also sell all kinds of things that you're going to want to buy. They sell vintage dresses, new designer T shirts, and best of all - all kinds of amazing, one of a kind jewelry pieces and handmade hats and scarfs. There were easily 5 things that I wanted to buy immediately upon arrival. I decided on one new scarf and I love it! I will be back to buy some jewelry next time. Also you will leave with a hairstyle that is flattering, edgy, and stylish. The do cuts, colors, braids, wedding hair - everything. There is a photography studio in the back where you can book photo shoots as well. The owners and employees are beyond friendly. You should totally check this place out for so many reasons, it's really unique and inspiring. read more

Friend and Nemesis is a fabulous addition to the neighborhood! I went in for the first time recently, looking for a local salon that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. I made an appointment with Kristy and told her that my biggest challenge in the past is that stylists don't know how to cut and style my soft, fine curly hair. I don't wear it straight and hate it when stylists insist on blowing it out. Kristy did a great job on the color (natural partial blonde highlights) and then got down to the cut. She listened to what I wanted (volume and a nice shape, able to wear down easily) and went to work. Most impressively, she was able to style it curly! I would have been able to go right out afterwards, while usually I have to rush home and wash it to see what it would really look like. I have left salons with the most frizzy, dry, sticky hair you could imagine, and it was a relief to leave feeling beautiful. The cool space, great atmosphere, good conversation and local pride will keep me coming back as a loyal customer. Best of all it was reasonably priced, and way less than I would have paid in Center City. Word of advice: They take credit cards but you can't tip on it; make sure to have enough cash to tip your fabulous stylist. read more

I can't say enough good things about F.A.N. I have been looking for a hair salon in Philadelphia that I LOVE and THIS IS IT. I have moved around a lot, and because of this feel like I am always trying to find a new stylist. I liked my old stylist, but she left her place and didn't have a salon, so once again I had to find someplace new...and I am so glad that I did! I started my day by having coffee at the trendy little rocket cat, so was already feeling cool, and then I walked into F.A.N. and felt super cool. The whole environment is so NYC. It's like this super cool little warehouse that is awesome inside. It doesn't even feel like you are in a salon, it feels like you are hanging out in a friend's great room. The lighting is also completely wonderful...it's not that harsh lighting you get in so many salons that makes you look ugly while you are getting your hair done, it's softer and you look beautiful! Kristy was absolutely wonderful. She did a full consult with me before moving to my hair. I felt like I was on some sort of t.v. show where they talk about the before, describe how they are going to fix/enhance it, and then show you the after. Kristy was also super friendly and easy to talk to. We had nice conversation with her and Tommy and Michele the entire time and it was really a lot of fun. At the end of the time, I was left with a hair that felt soft and supple, had been expertly styled with the exact color I wanted. I swear, the last time my hair looked that good was when I was living in Seoul, went to Tony & Guy's and paid $300+ to get my hair done...(yes, it shocked even me...but they don't tell you the price until the end, so what do you do?) The price was also much lower than I had anticipated and a great value for the whole experience. I am a SUPER FAN of F.A.N and if I had any other friends other than those on yelp, would recommend everyone to go there....as long as it doesn't make it too crowded and difficult for me to get an appointment! read more

I haven't written a Yelp review since 2011, but since i found F.A.N. thanks to it, here we go! The shop opens at 11am on Tuesdays, and Kristy answered my call around 10:45 that day to get me in later that evening. When I came in that night we chatted for a second, I was offered one of around 10 different teas, and she opened up her Pinterest to show me some style inspiration based on what I told her I wanted to do with my mop. She got it right away and offered a ton of suggestions on how to get the look and style just right, and then went on to cut my hair using a razor/scissor combo that made it look like it's never looked before - better than it's ever looked before. Through the cut, there was great, easy conversation between me, her, her stylist assistant and Photog husband (and great music). After the cut, she told me about FAN's deal where you can stop in and get a free bang cut. She also handed over a personalized 'Thank You' card that she wrote on the spot, when I wasn't looking. Awesome. read more

YAASSS I tried this salon yesterday and I'm excited to go back. Another reviewer said something along the lines of "feeling like a rock star" when you leave. You will! Kristy spent a solid amount of time figuring out me and my hair. The ending was result was the best hair experience I've ever had! The attention my hair received was totally personalized and now my hair looks DOPE. Extremely excited to have F.A.N. up in our end of the neighborhood. read more

I have always hated paying for a haircut...until I found F.A.N. If you are going to pay someone to cut your hair, you should be able to walk out of the salon and feel like a rock star or a model or a reality TV celebrity or whatever you think is cool. That's how I feel every time I walk out of their salon. I've had my hair cut by Kristy and Tommy and love both of their style. Although it's great to have talented people working on your hair, it's even better when they are super friendly. Which is the case here. Also, how often do you get a free cup of espresso with your haircut? On top of all this, they also sell cool books/clothes/accessories. Andreas, one of the owners, is a remarkable photographer and operates a studio in the store as well. He does very cool portraits and other photo shoots. Last but not least, they regularly host local designers to display their creations. Bottom line: talented, creative and supportive people making you look like the star you really are. read more

I don't get my hair cut and dyed often but when I do, I go to fan. Kristy is super sweet and listens to my ideas and comes up with great styles based on my input. I don't like to spend a lot of time styling my hair so she doesn't give me anything high maintenance. I like to go bold with my colors and she always takes things to the next level. The vibe of the salon is totally laid back and fun. They also have some boutique items and a photography studio in-house. This place is boss! read more

Welp. I'm in love. Tommy is a mad genius. I was in a little hair rut, and Tommy sat and talked to me for a while about what I wanted my hair to say, what my styling routine is, what my personal style is like. He was very straight with me and was so knowledgeable and smart, that when he asked me to trust him and take a risk, I said yes! He cut my hair dry with a razor, and honestly, it was more like sculpting. He'd shave a little off, stand back, mess it up, and then go back in. After he was done, he introduced me to some new products and showed me how to use them. He also taught me all about co-washing which may change the way I treat my hair forever! After all was said and done, I looked better than I have in months, and every day somebody compliments my fierce hair. I feel super confident and happy! My friend told me to say, "I'm a fan of F.A.N." You can decide whether that's lame or awesome. read more

I can't say enough great things about my experience at F.A.N. I noticed a lot of salons were popping up in the neighborhood, and after a few years of going back to NYC for haircuts, decided it was time to find a stylist in Philly I could feel at home with. After checking Yelp, I noticed that F.A.N. also offered photo services, which was exactly what I needed to promote my music businesses, and they happened to be within walking distance. I stopped by one afternoon with my Doberman and everyone was super friendly, professional, and enthusiastic about my ideas. I scheduled an appointment with Tommy for highlights and a trim one afternoon, and came back the next day for makeup by Kristy and a photo shoot with Andreas. I had never really had a professional photo shoot before, but everything went really smoothly and they made me feel really comfortable. The vibe at F.A.N. is very cool but also very laid back and welcoming - we didn't stop joking and laughing the whole time. They also helped me carry in a lot of heavy gear, which helped alleviate most of my stress about the day. Afterwards, Andreas sent an extensive contact sheet to choose from and provided me with a generous number of edited shots, with a few different looks/outfits. I look like total rock star and can't wait to redesign my entire website around them, and find an excuse to do it all again. Highly recommended. read more

I really loved everything about my experience at FAN with Kristy. Not only did she give me what I seriously think might be the perfect haircut, but she had a good time doing it! She took everything I said about my wants/challenges and really considered how she could give me the best look. I think there's a lot of value in the atmosphere, too. It's a rad, redone studio space, but the most important part is that I felt totally comfortable. No pretension, no exclusive hipster vibe. No product pushing. Everyone was just working and having fun. If I have anything close to a complaint, it's just that they don't let you put the tip on your card. Lots of places do that, but I did call ahead and ask about my card and they didn't mention that. I just wish I knew, because I was the last appointment on Saturday, they are closed Sunday/Monday, and last night I had class, so I feel like a deadbeat going in today and dropping off my tip. :) read more

F.A.N. is the best hair salon I have ever been to. Paulie, Kristy, & Keeley care for their clients so much, I've never seen anything like it before! I've been going to Paulie for a few years now. She makes me feel so comfortable and I consider her like a sister to me. I walk out of here feeling like a rockstar. The way Paulie cuts and colors my hair, I truly feel like I'm a celebrity. I travel extra far to get my hair done specifically here and I have no regrets each time. I am so blessed for F.A.N. and look forward to coming back every time! I HIGHLY recommend coming here and getting your hair done by any of the 3 stylists! I wish I could give this 10 stars!!! read more

Look no further to get an amazing hair cut. Decided to drastically change my color and style and FAN did the most amazing job. Let's start with the setting - husband and wife who decided to open up a shop! Awesome right? The catch is the wife cuts hair and the husband has a photography studio in the back. The building is old but so beautifully decorated with a lot of weird unique elements. -The haircut! She took a lot of time asking me questions and getting my input on what I wanted to do. Then I was given a step by step on how she was going to tackle the mess of my hair. My hair is very fine and had to work with that. The haircut came out perfect and it shapes my face so nicely. The color is exactly what I asked for. I couldn't be anymore pleased with my hair experience here. It's so hard to find a reliable salon in the city where you aren't paying a fortune. I would recommend FAN to anyone read more

This salon is great. I think it's the only time I've ever gone back to a salon to see a specific person (besides High Tech Hair which is also good). Tommy is a great stylist. He spent thirty minutes listening to my hair horror stories. Tommy is really an artist who knows what he is doing. He did a wonderful job with my hair coloring, using a "blur" technique instead of giving me a streaky cheap look. My hair looked great with the trimming he gave me (so my hair doesn't just hang straight). The best was the bangs. A stylist four years ago gave me bangs that had pointed tips, and for years I've been trying to recreate that look and no stylist has been able to, even after telling me they understand what I meant. But Tommy cut my bangs perfectly and as someone that is really particular about my bangs, I was super happy! read more

As a curly-haired girl, finding a stylist in a new city can be a long & frustrating endeavor. For nearly four years, I spent too much money for mediocre haircut. And then I found F.A.N. Keeley is "my person" like I have never ever had in a stylist before. She loves what she does & is so committed to continually honing her skills & her vision. She's an artist, and that's not something I've ever seen in a stylist before. But she doesn't just love her job. She loves MY HAIR. My previously unmanageable hair. As she works, she practically glows with delight. And now, for the first time in my adult life, I really love my hair, too. And I just love being there. I show up early on purpose. Someone always greets me & brings me a cup of tea or glass of water - in real cups that someone has to wash when I'm done. An unhurried sense of calm settles on me there, no matter how rushed or stressful my day was. The other stylists recognize me & chat & grin like they're glad I'm there. And you can tell they all really like each other, and they learn from & support each other. They play foosball with clients' kids while they wait. They pause to chat. It's a real community, and I'm so glad I found it. read more

I got a very drastic haircut at FAN and I'm so happy I chose FAN. I went from years of having mermaid locks to an edgy short look - probably close to 12 or 13 inches off! I chose Tommy as my stylist (based on reviews I read) and he was amazing. He made me feel so good about myself and my decision. Tommy clearly has artistic vision and ability to create beautiful work. I quickly developed trust and let him have his creative way with me - which was taking a razor to my hair! I had so much fun with it and FAN is for sure my new go to. Highly highly reccomend. All the staff was so welcoming and boutique was very cute as well! read more

Great space, incredibly friendly staff, and cool things to peruse or buy while you're waiting....although my wait was very short. I got a referred to Kristy by a friend who has always had great edgy hair styles that were unique and perfect for her face. When I met with Kristy she was super friendly and took the first half of our appointment getting to know my hair, my style, what I've done to it in the past, and gave me amazing recommendations without pushing me to take any of them. Everyone there was super warm and welcoming. No too-cool-for-school vibes at all. I went in for a basic trim and left with exactly what I wanted and then some! After initial hesitation to step outside the box, she convinced me to try out bangs! She just knew they'd be perfect and fun. Also: free bang trims! My hair is really fine so she recommended a new hair care routine and made some none-product-specific suggestions. She was spot on. If you want to go to a place that doesn't charge you out the butt for a quick snip-snip and get treated like a real client by people that actually care about your hair, style, and the real-life maintenance of it all go to Kristy and FAN. read more

I live right around the corner from F.A.N. and after checking out their excellent reviews on Yelp, I decided to check them out. My appointment was with Tommy and he is a delight to be around! He spent a lot of time with me discussing my hair history and what my hair goals are. He even realized I was getting a lot of breakage from how high my ponytail is when I run. I've never worked with a stylist who wanted to educate me this level. The cut left my desperately broken hair looking healthy & sexy. I will definitely be sticking with F.A.N. I love supporting local businesses but not simply because they're local. F.A.N. has the goods to back it up! read more

The Yelpers did me right again! I have found my new salon. I hate salons usually - I never feel uglier than under blinding salon lights reflecting off of chrome and a million mirrors. And often the vibe is so catty and exclusive that I feel like someone's little sister dragged to a party because our parents insisted. Not at F.A.N! When I called to make the appointment, I was asked if I had short or long hair before I was assigned a stylist. That kind of attention to detail continued straight through the whole experience. At one point, Kristy (one of the owners) asked me to uncross my ankles to make sure that I was sitting square so that she could be sure of cutting my hair evenly. Before she even washed my hair, she sat me in front of the mirror and we had a solid 15 minutes of conversation about what I wanted my hair to look like and how much time I wanted to spend on it. She made me feel like I was the most important client she'd ever had, and her years of experience showed in her questions and comments about my hair. Throughout the whole experience she was warm and chatty, and she gave me great low-maintenance styling advice for my wavy hair. When I mentioned that I want to try to make arroz con pollo but I found it intimidating, she gave me the outline of her grandfather's sofrito recipe! She says once you get the sofrito right, you can do anything. And I believe her. Also, I look like a million bucks. read more

I visited F.A.N based on Yelp reviews. I called and made an appointment. Kristy (the owner) who was very pleasant over the phone gave all times available for the day I needed. They will also give you a call the day before to confirm. The salon is very quaint and nicely put together. All the staff were very nice and welcoming!! I did not wait long before Tommy came over to introduce himself and take me to his chair. Before he got started he asked me what I wanted. I expressed to him what I thought about my hair and what I would like, from there Tommy went on to work his magic. YES, HE WORKS MAGIC!! Tommy is extremely friendly, outgoing and very professional!! He is also very honest and gave me some tips on what to do with my hair and what to stay away from. Tommy transformed my limp boring hair into what I never thought fine thin hair could possibly have, VOLUME. He brought life and so much volume to my hair that since my hair cut I haven't had the need to put in any products like mouse or hair spray. I don't think I can remember the last time that has ever happened. I will be returning!! Tommy thanks for an amazing cut!!!! Kristy is incredible. Upon calling and making my appointment, I was unsure of how to explain what I wanted done, so the person who initially answered the phone put Kristy on, and she talked with me for 5-10 minutes and asked questions about what I wanted done. On the day of my appointment, she spent another 10 minutes talking with me to be sure she knew exactly how I wanted my hair shaped, and what color I wanted put in. She explained which color shades would look best with my half-dyed, half-growing in hair color. Best of all, I had some vague idea of asymmetrical bangs that I of course did not bring a photo of (because I'm never prepared for everything), and she was able to figure out EXACTLY what I wanted. From the moment I pulled up with my bike for the first time and tommy came out and told me to stash my bike inside, I knew I would love this place! It was my first time and I went because of the Yelp reviews. I was greeted so warmly and loved the interior right away. Tommy took me right away into his chair and talked a little bit about what I was looking for. Touched and played with my hair to get a feel for it for a minute and had Steph take me to a sink. Steph washed my hair and kept me super entertained with her funny stories and our back and forth banter. Then tommy took me back immediately in his chair, sat me down and started! It was a great experience but not only because my hair came out perfectly, but because tommy and Steph were soooo great! They were relatable, fun to talk to and easy to just chill with! I didn't even feel like I was getting my hair cut but instead just hanging out with my friends. Great price too!!! Overall, awesome experience and I'm bringing my boyfriend back there to get his crazy hair tamed!!! Thanks guys! I had a really fun time!!! read more
