I seriously regret giving this place a second chance. The first time I gave them the benefit of the doubt and didn't write a review because I figured it might've caught them on a bad day. Nope...this is actually how they operate. Round one, a few months back: I left sitting in the waiting area for close to 25min before before I was seen by the stylist. No apology for the egregious wait despite having an appointment. Staff was constantly talking about influencers and which ones they had seen that day for the entirety of my hair washing. And my hair came out okay, though was flat and limp by the next day. Round two, today: I arrived five minutes early to my appointment. After waiting 15min, I asked for an ETA. After checking I was told it was going to be another 10 minutes. That's 20 minutes after my appointment time (if I'm lucky). I felt for the front desk employee - she was nice and apologetic - but should not have to be. I had to leave due to a meeting that I could not be late for. I suppose I now know why it's easier to get an appointment here vs DryBar. Advice to BLO/OUT: Figure out how to run the business and have respect for your customers, beyond just those considered influencers. Advice to potential customers: Go to DryBar. It costs $10 more and is entirely worth it. I've never waited more than two minutes past my appointment time, staff is friendly, and stylists are great. read more

They aren't experts at doing Black womens' hair if it's curly, so it doesn't look perfect when it's done. They don't know how to brush/detangle black hair (Tip: you detangle while the conditioner is on not while you're blow drying it) and they don't get it flat/straight enough. And they also charge an extra $20 for it because it takes longer. But it takes longer because they don't know what they're doing. Why would I pay a premium for something because you aren't good at it so it takes you longer and it doesn't even look perfect at the end? Maybe I just went to the wrong stylist, but this was one of the worst blow outs I've had. My hair did not look good. They ripped my hair apart while brushing/detangling it. And I had to go home and use my own flat iron to get my hair straight and to re-style it afterwards. Eventhough I have no plans on coming back, I was stunned when they told me that I'll need to pay more for this service the next time when I checked out. I used to come here regularly many, many years ago. My experience was much better then. I just moved back to Philly and thought I could get the same level of service here, but I see a lot has changed. read more

Ugh. I went to blo/out for the first time on Saturday. Booking online was easy. My actual appointment was fine although very fast. I had asked for lots of curls as I was going to a masquerade party and wanted a fairly dramatic hairstyle. At one point the stylist asked if I wanted hairspray and I responded with a "umm, yes." Looking back he must have just lightly sprayed the curls. By the time I got home from the appointment the curls were gone. (See the photo.) Does that look like curls? Needless to say I was so upset and angry. I spent money on this and less than 30 minutes later it looked like I did it myself. I would have washed it over again but I had gotten my makeup done at Sephora and didn't want to ruin that. Still, no one should leave a hair salon wanting to do their hair themselves at home. It still boggles my mind how stylists don't know how to make a curl last longer than a few minutes. Terrible experience. Update: I emailed the salon the day of my blowout and never heard back. I've also received no response to this Yelp review. I'm guessing they're tired of responding to unsatisfied customers. read more

My experience today wasn't a good one. It started with the odd question or story the girl washing my hair had, odd and weird, I don't know you. I asked her to give my scalp a good wash because she thought putting tons of shampoo on my hair and not massaging it creating a lather was the correct way to wash hair, it's not and she didn't do it on the second wash. I told her I wanted volume and curls and instead of her blow drying with a brush to crate that she dried it and used a curling iron. I didn't get what I asked for, not happy. read more

My friend made reservations for us to get our hair and makeup done here before a wedding we were attending. I was a little hesitant once I looked up the place since a lot of their current reviews aren't the best, but she chose the place, not me. Online I thought their prices were reasonable, $40 for any blow out you wanted including curls and $65 for makeup (additional $15 for lashes). I had Gina for my makeup and I really loved how it turned out. I have large eyes so I was able to do a smokey-ish eye without it being overwhelming for daytime and the foundation/blush/contour she did was just right. I chose to get the lashes and they stayed on until the next day. For my hair I had Hector, unfortunately I wasn't thrilled with the outcome, but I don't really blame him for that. I wanted lots of volume so he did lots of curls-too much for what I had in mind, I'm sure with the expectation that they would fall throughout the day...well my hair doesn't fall, it holds everything, so it didn't achieve the volume with low curls I was looking for until the next day after I had slept on it. The receptionists were very nice, quick to find us stylists, and provided us both with mimosas (and a refill) during our stay there. read more

This review isn't about the blow out, but the business they run. Apparently they got a new system last year and cleared out all your package information purchased from prior years. Without a receipt copy from the package you purchased, you are SOL and they dont have you in the system any longer and you cannot redeem what's left in the package you purchased! When I called and first spoke with their manager and she said she couldn't do much but ask the owner and she'd get back to me. It's been a week and I called and left a message with someone else and still havent heard back. I won't be retuning obviously and I guess I PAID for two blow outs that I cannot use. Two of us arrived to blo 12 minutes late and they would not give us the blow dry. I usually love this place but am very disappointed and frustrated by the lack of compassion and understanding. Also the attitude of the person at the front desk was not particularly kind or empathetic. Every time I come here I always end up waiting at least ten minutes for my blow dry... and the people who arrived after us were ten minutes late and got their full service. Additionally, we both asked for our hair to be teased at the crown after a brief and unsatisfactory dry style and were told there wasn't enough time. My advice: people are occasionally late - try to be accommodating to your clients... especially loyal repeat clients. Don't arbitrarily punish some clients for being late and not others. read more

The booking process was easy. I called and made an appointment over the phone for a keratin treatment. Due to a last minute event, I had to change from a full keratin to an express keratin, but they were still able to accommodate me. Once I got to the location, I was attended to right away. I believe the person who did my hair was named Mary. There's no doubt that she's friendly, personable, and meticulous. However, she was a bit rough throughout the entire process. During the keratin process (as well as afterwards with the hair straightening), Mary repeatedly combed through my hair so roughly that my ring-style piercing came undone. She apologized, paused, and gave me time to put it back in. But I declined and said that it was ok, I'd put it back in afterwards (because I was afraid it may come undone again). And sure enough, soon after, she pulled through my hair so hard that the comb got caught in my other earrings and I was pulled up out of my seat. Again, she apologized and she did become more careful when working around my ears afterwards. But also, while blow drying my hair after the keratin treatment, I noticed that the dryer was always a bit too close for comfort. However, it was bearable, until she burned me..twice. I actually unknowingly yelped out of pain, and she apologized. When finished, I had so many cowlicks in my hair that I was embarrassed while heading over to my next mani/pedi appointment. It also ended up taking less than an hour from start to finish, when I was told it normally takes 1.5-2hours. I also wanted to point out that the 3rd floor was not as clean as I would have hoped. There were huge balls of hair at the base of every chair/seat. I understand that not all salons clean in-between each and every appointment, but by the looks of it, the hair balls and other dust on the floor appears to have accumulated from previous days. I had originally wanted a trim as well, but was told that there was no one today who can accommodate that request. So I thought I would come back for the trim as well as another shot at the keratin treatment (depending on the results), but unfortunately, I don't think I will be coming back. Very convenient location, and friendly staff members though. And from the other reviews, it seems like they are fantastic with hair cuts/styling, perhaps keratin is just not it's area of expertise. read more
