    Spring rolls

Atmosphere is good and welcoming. We were seated right away but service is slow paced. Spring roll is amazing. Very fresh and tasty. Main coarse was okay, but not my favorite. Pad Thai was average . They didn't have big noodle so I did have drunken noodle with same noodles as pad Thai and be warned it is hot as in spicy. Not so many vegetables in the main coarse. Having the love for Thai food that I try every city I go to, this was average.

So good. This is just a gem of a spot on Hollis. Such consistently great Thai food with exceptional service. The constant flow of food delivery drivers to pick up their orders is a testament to how popular it is - and for good reason. And their prices make it a great value as you always take home what you can't finish from their generous portions. Highly recommend!

My boss and I had eaten here during our visit. I ordered the pad Thai and she had a crunchy noodle with chicken and lettuce. Everything was seasoned perfectly and all I can say was that I was not disappointed. The reviews on yelp was spot on. Will visit again if I am in town.

When you ask someone where their favourite Thai food in Halifax is, there's a pretty good chance that you're going to get "Talay" as a response. And with good reason, Talay puts out a tasty, consistent product, time and time again. It used to be a fixture for staff meetings with my co-workers, and while we have spread our culinary wings a little more lately, it's not Talay that is at fault. Having gotten so much take out, it was nice to actually sit down here once with my girlfriend/now fiancee. A dozen or so two- and four-top tables fill the room, with nice red-toned wooden chairs which match that of the tables. The decor is Thai-ish with hanging beads and nick nacks on the walls where there's room, but not so much that it's tacky, We ordered the massaman curry and duck curry for a bit of a change from the usual pad Thai and red or green curries. Not that those are bad choices. I'm always happy to see duck on a menu, but I was a little worried about the duck here. Given the size of their menu and that it's probably not ordered particularly often, I had a feeling that it could be from frozen. Nonetheless, we plowed ahead and ordered it. The massaman curry comes with beef, sweet potato and onion. Rich and creamy from the coconut milk curry sauce, and with just a hint of spice, it's an easy going Thai dish that won't burn the taste buds off anyone that's particularly sensitive. Alas, the beef was a bit overcooked and on the tough side though. Coming in a red curry sauce with fresh cherry tomatoes, pineapple, red pepper and what I think were grapes, there was a great mix of rich, sweet and tart in this dish, a great example of Thai food. However, my fears were valid as the duck's texture spoke to it having spent some time in a freezer. Still, with that unique duck flavour and for only a dollar more than the regular proteins, it wasn't an entirely bad choice. Service was fairly attentive and generally adequate. And now for a quick round up of a couple dishes that I frequently get for take out: Pad Thai - A national of dish of Thailand and the one most Westerners think of when the subject of Thai food comes up, this is a dish that Thai places pretty much have to do well to be regarded as any good at all. It's like an Italian spot that can't make pasta right or a diner that makes a bad breakfast. As for Talay's, they've definitely got a good thing going on. I've encountered many a take-out container packed with perfectly cooked noodles, tender chunks of chicken, tofu, green onions and peanuts. All of this with a light application of sauce that is slightly sweet, rich, and with just a faint note of spice. Tired of pizza on Fridays? Get this. Not a Friday? Get this anyway. Thai fried rice - A former co-worker of mine (thanks, TC!) got me onto this as an alternative to pad Thai. Sometimes you just gotta mix it up! Talay's Thai fried rice is pretty much your next level chicken fried rice, with lots of veggies and scrambled egg mixed in. It makes for a great night shift meal, and would be fantastic post-bar if Talay were open that late. An intrepid person might say the solution is to start drinking earlier. I may or may not agree. Also, it only costs $12. Just get this and stuff your face with rice-y goodness. It may not be the wild Thai food you see on travel/food shows, but Talay is putting out some damn fine grub, in sizable quantities and at reasonable prices. And now I'm regretting that they closed a few hours ago...

How lucky was I to be invited to lunch at this wonderful Thai food haven on this shifty skied Friday afternoon. Andrew and I arrived just before 1pm to find the place alive with patrons settled into almost all of the available tables. We were seated promptly and brought water, while we waited for our dining compatriots. The menu provides an abundance of options; from sea-creatures to bamboo, piquant to creamy, there's a little taste of Thai to suit just about every appetite. When the "double" portion of our date arrived we chatted and within moments our server arrived, pen poised for order taking. Andrew and I opted to share the veggie green curry and basil tofu, while our compadres chose lunch specials from the back of the menu. The meals didn't take long to arrive and were presented at perfectly palatable temperatures with crisp vegetables and zippy spice enough to make my taste buds swoon. The portions were ample and reasonably priced, while the service remained attentive throughout our stay. The lunch crowd dissipated quickly and by the time we'd scooped our last saucy mouthfuls, the place was completely empty. There's something interesting about the way in which humans flock during meal time, and like clockwork, a mass exodus takes place with only dirty dishes and crumpled napkins remaining in the wake. The dishes at Talay That are flush with flavor and exceptionally balanced between sweet and salty. The space was clean and easy, and the service was attentive and professional. And of course, the company was spot on. A lovely dining experience indeed. I will certainly return to this Barrington Street resto.

I haven't eaten in the restaurant but I've ordered take-out for lunch. The service is super fast, I placed an order for me and four of my coworkers and it was ready in 15 minutes! The serving sizes were huge!! I don't think any of us actually finished, I had my leftovers for dinner and it was still delicious! I ordered the cashew chicken; it had a great spice to it and lots of cashews! It doesn't come with rice, so make sure you order some on the side! They also have a great lunch special menu with lots of options under $10.

The only reason I go there is the spicy noodles. It's a noodle dish close to Pad Thai but has way more vegetables and chicken and as the name suggests, it's spicy. The restaurant has a fairly modest interior but for a quick lunch you can't go wrong. It's never packed on a weekend and service is pretty fast. I think it's better than most of the Thai restaurants in Halifax(at least the ones I've tried)

First visit. Spent 20 minutes downtown on a Saturday night looking for parking. We were starved Got the massaman beef curry, chili chicken and pad thai with pork. The beef curry had a very mild, thin sauce; I prefer Chaba Thai's spicier take on the dish . With loads of fresh, crisp veg, the chili chicken was probably my favorite dish and it was still a let down; it had three "hot" peppers next to it on the menu and I found it quite mild. The pad thai was okay but I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between it and food court thai. Overall not bad but not remarkable either. Our waitress' service was probably best part of meal. She checked on the table often, re-filled waters and had a great sense of humour. If you are downtown and looking for good thai, I wouldn't recommend this place.

On my recent visit to Halifax a friend and I talked about our growing love for Thai food, so it was fitting when she yelled at me "We're going to Talay Thai!" when we were thinking about dinner options one evening. When we walked in we were greeted right away and seated by the friendly host/server. Lots of options on the menu, but my 2 of my friends got their usual Pad Thai and another grabbed the spicy chicken with a side of rice. I went with the Pad Seu Yui with chicken, which I was very pleased with. All serving sizes were very filling, I scraped my plate clean but my friends were not able to finish theirs. Prices are pretty on par with other Thai establishments and you get your monies worth from what I can tell. The servers were really friendly and food came quickly, I didn't really have any time to think about the wait or anything like that. I also enjoyed the inside of the restaurant, a cozy atmosphere with nice decor. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area... I certainly hope it's still here when I come back to Halifax again.

My wife and I had dinner at Talay Thai on Friday 16 September. We were staying at the nearby Westin hotel and spotted this Thai restaurant during our taxi ride to the hotel. We both like Thai food and frequent the Thai restaurants near home. We arrived at about 6PM to find only one other table occupied, which we did not take as a good sign. But by the time we left almost all the tables were full and there was a constant stream of take away traffic. Also, many of those entering the restaurant were recognized by the wait staff - so this is obviously a local favorite. We started by sharing a bowl of Tom Kha soup. Then our entrees were Masaman curry with pork and the deep fried sea bass with red curry. This was a lot of food for two people and the waiter was a bit surprised there were no leftovers to box and take home; as we are staying in a hotel, leftovers are not practical. The deep fried sea base was the highlight of an exceptionally good Thai cuisine meal. The large fillet and red curry were delicious. This not to say the Masaman curry with pork was not also delicious. The service was very nice, especially considering how busy the restaurant became during our stay. I am sure we will return to Talay Thai during our stay in Halifax.

I had heard good thins about this place so decided to try it. Clean and spacious place. The waitress is super sweet and helpful. Food is ok, I ordered the duck curry and it was actually too sweet. It had a spicy flavour to it however the sweetness was overwhelming. I could taste the added sugars to it. That was an unpleasant surprise. Wish it was more authentic... There was a good amount of duck meat in the curry and plenty of sauce. The cherry tomatoes were put in whole so when I bit into it, I burnt my mouth with the super hot inner tonatoe (temperature wise). I've definitely had better Thai food elsewhere.

It also had green beans, bell peppers (red and green), egg, bamboo shoots and eggplant. It had a good fiery kick to it and the portion size was great. We really enjoyed this dish. The Panang Beef had a bit of spice to it too, but not as much as the Spicy Noodles. It was full of lean and tender beef, bell peppers, green beans and cabbage. My favourite Asian-styled cuisine!…read more I will shamelessly admit that my boyfriend and I have come here at least once a month over the past 5 years - whether it's for a light lunch or a date night - we adore this place. Firstly, I'd like to address the decor: it is gorgeous! Unlike many other Thai restaurants in Halifax (many of which have plain, blank walls, and minimal decor), this entire restaurant is filled with beautiful figurines, mini waterfalls, and flowers. The place is decked out in gorgeous Thai-themed objects, prints, and designs. For some who may not have a taste for culturally unfamiliar interior decor, this may come across as "tacky" - but for me, the decor is everything! Second, the food: The menu is ENDLESS. There is something for everyone. If you think Thai food isn't for you, or don't necessarily have a taste for Asian cruisine, don't worry! For their "Americanized" dishes, they have familiar dishes such as deep-fried chicken wings (and BBQ chicken), french fries, nuggets, calamari, stirfry, spring rolls, and a variation of soups and salads. If this is your first time, I strongly recommend you try the pad thai. It has certainly been the Thai dish that has stolen the hearts of many first-timers - including myself! Recently, the curry dishes have been top notch! Definitely would recommend. Also: portion sizes are plentiful so you never leave with a dissatisfied stomach! Last but not least, the staff: It appears to me that this is a family-run establishment. The staff are always enthusiastic, polite, and most certainly generous. Ordering a wine that they are almost out of? Don't worry! They'll run to the store to buy more within seconds (even if you insist on accepting a different wine!!!). If you ever have questions regarding the menu - or anything at all - they do not hesitate to answer with full honesty and interest! Needless to say, dining at Thai Ivory is without doubt an experience. The only negative I must say is that I was heartbroken after the closing of the Quinpool location (though I believe driving to the Bedford highway for a bowl of curry is well worth it). They do not get enough business for what they deserve! This may partly be because of the location - or that Thai cuisine may not be the most current food trend on everyone's minds. Regardless, I believe this establishment deserves a successful future.

Halifax is beautiful, no doubt--but if you're someone who needs a kick of chili in your food (and your soul), the city can feel like a spice desert. Enter Pho Maniac. We spotted it thanks to the red chili-laced photos plastered on the window. That alone was enough to pull us in. And thank god we did--because this place delivers on heat. Not the mild, tamed-down-for-tourists kind either. Real spice. Actual flavor. The food scene in Halifax is trying to grow, but let's be honest--it's mostly tailored for white folks and cruise ship passersby. If your palate grew up on sambal, Sichuan, or scotch bonnets, most of this city will leave you unbothered and unsalted. But Pho Maniac? A mirage turned real. The place was packed with Asian diners and the one off-white wanderer who knew what's up. That's always a good sign. The broth? Deep, rich, and fiery. It hits the spot you forgot Halifax had. I still couldn't see myself living here long-term--because spicy food is non-negotiable--but at least Pho Maniac made the week feel less bland. In a city of boiled lobster and beige seasoning, this little joint reminded me my taste buds were still alive.

One day at work, I was looking for lunch and Pho Maniac came up in a scan of nearby spots. While they're a pho place, I didn't want to get the inevitable soup splashes on my work clothes, so I went with the banh mi for takeout. Taking my spoils back the office, I unfurled the sandwich bag to see what was inside. Wrapped tightly in plastic, the banh mi seemed a bit narrow, but it was longer than the sort of banh mi you get at specialty shops for a few bucks each (at least in pre-pandemic pricing) in bigger cities. It was very meat-heavy, loaded with strips of grilled pork (they also have beef and chicken). The pork had a nice flavour from the grill and a bit of fish sauce funk, balanced out by a hint of sweetness from the pickled carrots. Some Thai basil and green onion added pops of vegetal freshness. It was hard to get a good feel for the bun, as the heat of the pork and the plastic wrap steamed it, so the trademark crispness of a banh mi bun was lost. A paper wrap would definitely be an improvement. A return visit had me rolling the dice on pho splashes, going with tender beef and flank pho. I'm not sure what cut "tender beef" is, as tenderloin isn't typically found in pho, but I would guess brisket, which is much more common. I got it as takeout and assembled it in a bowl I had at work, but you could easily use the one they give you. Said bowl comes with the noodles, beef and toppings (bean sprouts, lime, Thai basil, hoisin and chili sauces) in it, while a second container had the broth. The flank and (likely) brisket weren't particularly discernible from one another, but both were nice and tender, and reasonably portioned. The many accoutrements added layers of flavour to the already tasty pho. The broth was beef-forward, with hints of star anise and other spices, and had a pleasant viscosity that suggested that Pho Maniac is likely boiling bones to make their own broth. It was good enough for me to straight up drink the broth that remained unused for the noodles after I had finished those! My regular-sized pho was a good portion for a satisfying, but not heavy, lunch. While I'm sad that New Asia has moved on, Pho Maniac is a solid spot in its own right, and I look forward to many work lunches to come!
