Thai Epxress Lower Sackville: ordered the green curry chicken. Mostly onions, hardly any other fresh veggies, out of egg plant completely. When I got it it had hardly any sauce, tasted like plain white rice with minimal flavour. Ordered a spring roll with the order but never received it even though I was charged for it. It's also how I feel about their Pad Thai. I love spicy chicken Pad Thai. Today I was at The Halifax Shopping Center when my craving hit. There was no line (unusual). My food took about as long as usual to prepare. I get a cup of peanuts with it and a set of chop sticks. Although it wasn't as spicy as I like, it was one of the best I've had in a while. Cons: I've noticed they don't seem to cut up the chicken very well and I find myself wanting a utensil to do it myself. Otherwise I miss the blocks of tofu. I've got to remember to ask for it because I don't seem to get any these days unless they are cutting it up so small that I don't notice. After a long walk to the mall (stupid bus strike...) I was looking for a decent meal to fill the void and provide fuel for the trek back. Seeing this relatively new place and being non-nonplussed with the current fare at the HSC, I decided to hit up Thai Express. With about eight entrees, there doesn't seem to be a lot of choice, but a passing glance belies the variety that is available as you can choose the protein that comes with your dish (shrimp, beef, chicken, vegetable, tofu, fish or vegetarian) as well as three different levels of spiciness. I felt like testing them out on perhaps the most well known Thai dish, pad thai, choosing chicken and a medium level of spiciness since I don't know what to expect. The ingredients are freshly laid out before you where a staff member organizes them, either putting together your soup or passing them off to a cook who cooks your meal to order, which is a nice touch compared to basically every other offering in the food court. No heat lamps or steam trays here! I make my pad thai a combo, which gets me a drink and an "Imperial" (re. spring) roll, and the after tax hit for this meal is less than $12. The price is all the more impressive when after a few minutes, I pick up a very large plate of pad thai. I grab some chop sticks and load of on napkins, although I don't partake in the sriracha that's available, it's nice that they have the delicious chili garlic sauce available. As I said, my plate is piled high with pad thai, with plenty of chicken and egg, with tofu, bean sprouts and crushed peanuts strewn throughout as well. While it could use a little bit of cilantro for colour, it is mall food and is on a styrofoam plate. The food itself is quite tasty, although sweeter than I like my pad thai and their 'medium' spiciness designation doesn't even register on my taste buds. If you like spice, I suggest either ordering it spicy and/or loading up on the sriracha. I have the feeling that being a franchise means that their spice levels have been toned down for the general masses. The spring roll, while a little bit on the cool side, is crunchy and fresh tasting ingredients. It should be noted that this four star rating is in the context of this being a fast food/food court joint. Is it going to compete with the great Thai restaurants throughout the downtown? No. But it is a better option than anything else in the mall, and will be an enjoyable meal to bookend your day of shopping or to fuel you up for even more consumerism. read more

One of my favourite 'fast food' Thai restaurants. The chefs have been there forever and the food is so consistent. I love hat you can see everything made right in front of you so there are absolutely no surprises. It's so fun to see them use the huge skillet type things over a fire and cook everything to perfection. At the mall - you can find it because there is always the longest line. My go to is the red chicken curry extra spicy. I can't get enough! The veggies are always so fresh and crunchy (not soggy like some restaurants). Definitely one of my favourite places to go after a hard day of shopping! Definitely recommend if you are in at the mall and need a quick curry fix! This is definitely not the spot if you do not like spice!!! read more

Jeez. I was so ready to get all food snob on you guys for liking this place but I'm pleasantly (and shockingly) surprised to say that this is some damn good fast food Thai! I figured with my Cha Baa obsession I wouldn't be able to appreciate anything less than superb but yet they won me over with their adorable (yet culturally inaccurate?) take-out boxes, super fresh veggies, lust-worthy tofu, and generally all-round badass Pad Thai. Is it the same as Cha Baa? Heck no -but it still manages to beat out several other sit-down Thai restaurants in the city. Add to that the fact that it's cheaper by a couple bucks without skimping on the portion size (they can pack a LOT of noodles into those boxes) and you've got yourself an easy choice in the Halifax Shopping Centre food court. read more

I have loved Thai Express for years, going back to when I lived in Montreal and used to go to Place Vertu shopping mall at least once a week to get the pad thai. I was happy to see this place at the Halifax Shopping Centre (my only wish is for them to open at Mic Mac Mall, which is much closer for me). The food is cooked fresh while you wait, in traditional woks. The pad thai is always my favorite. Today, I felt like the vegetarian pad thai. They do a quick blanch of the veggies before sauteing them in the wok with the noodles, egg, tofu and bean sprouts. Very fresh. Of course, it's not Fid's backdoor pad thai (see my other review for this) and it's almost the same price. But, if you're shopping and don't have time to go downtown, this is a very good option. read more

For fast food, this place is bumping. Tofu pad thai with 1073 calories, 43 grams of fat, 25 grams of sugar, and 30 grams of protein? Count me in.... just not that often. And only if I haven't eaten anything else that day, apparently. Deliciously fattening, so I indulge. I can't eat most take out. I have food allergies and it's a gamble. At this place though, I can't help but stop in and get a big plate of Gluten Free veg Pad thai. The two people at the woks know I am gluten intolerant and they wash the wok, the ladle and show me every time, the label on the gluten free sauce. I really appreciate that. Well I would consider it spicy in my opinion as I REALLY like it spicy but it wasn't to bad. I am going to write a two star review here. They can't hold a candle to any downtown Thai joints. Mainly because it's a mall franchise serving pre-fab sauces? The line was at least 5 people deep each time we walked by but I decided to wait and it took less than 10min to get food. I had green curry chicken, fresh spring roll and coconut water for $15. The curry sauce was full of corn starch (or a similar thickener) so it was really gluey. I chomped down on bones in my chicken too, that wasn't cool. I was in the midst of battling a mid-day hangover; I'm feeling hungry but weary of putting something in there... anyway, I saw that for the first time the line for Thai Express was non existant, so I bolted over. I ordered the Pad Thai, spicy. My life was revolutionized! Not only was it fresh, HUGE, and full of fresh ingredients... it didn't taste like mass produced fast food. Oh, lines are usually HUGE and they don't like debit during lunch hours. If you're in a rush hit up another place, they won't have a line. I went back the next day, just for this. Okay, get all your judgements out of the way now - I've never had pad thai *shameface*. Alright, now that we've dealt with that: I've seen Thai Express in the mall for a number of months but never wanted to wait in their ridiculously long line-up. However, I had some extra time today and the line-up was short so I hopped in. It was about a 10 minute wait but not too bad. Once I ordered I headed down to pick up my order and waited about 10 more minutes for that. If you want Thai Express, make sure you have the time to wait for it. It was a little longer than I would have liked but it was completely worth it. I got myself some chicken pad thai and holy baloney it was good! The portion was big but not too big (which is great because I was starving!) and the service was friendly. My chicken was sliced thin and cooked to perfection. The sprouts were perfect with just a little crunch and the take out boxes are adorable! I'm a convert. This is awesome. Now, who wants to take me out for "real" pad thai?! read more

I was in to HSC this afternoon to shop via gift cards. For lunch the bf and I decided to eat in the food court, something we normally do not do. For the most part, I strongly dislike food courts. I opted for Thai Express (bf- New York Fries as per usual) after reading stellar reviews. My Pad Thai with Shrimp was delightful. I enjoyed watching my meal being prepared before my eyes. Everything for my dish was in view and I could see everything and it tasted just as good as other sit-down Thai restaurants not to mention fresh. I was in at lunch time so yes it was busy and no where near fast or "express". I would have suggested perhaps switching the "order" counter with the "pick-up" counter to relieve some of the congestion as with a line that long people are dodging you to pass through. I noticed while in line while my food was being prepared that the staff were frustrated, probably because it was busy. They were becoming irritated with each other which was apparent to me as a customer. They were fumbling over each other and getting in each others way. They were not helping each other, something that should be worked on. If it wasn't or what I witnessed, my review would be a solid 5-star All-in-all a pretty great meal at a great price ($13 for my Pad Thai and a bottle of soda.) Decided to try Thai Express for lunch, I arrived about 2 PM. As I looked over the menu options, after a minute or two I decided I wasn't too interested in a combo with white rice. On the other hand, I would have enjoyed some egg noodles. At the last minute before I ordered, I glanced over the cashier's head on the wall to the left and spotted a sign for Chili Chili Bangkok, which comes with egg noodles. Aha, I decided to take a chance and order something new. Turned out that it is their new Special. The cashier said I was the first person to order it! She answered all my questions and I placed my order. The stir fry ingredients included broccoli, red pepper, baby corn, scrambled egg and loads of flat egg noodles, served in a tasty sauce. I selected tofu for my dish and it came to $7.08, including a free 16 ounce beverage of my choice (lemonade) which was an added bonus. The food was prepared and served up to me piping hot, but not spicy as in 'your mouth is on fire' hot. I then dressed it up with a wedge of lime, some squirts of fish sauce and hoisin sauce and a handful of chopped peanuts and it was good to go. It came in a large transparent plastic bowl, just like the one they serve their soup in. You get a ton of food, enough for two I thought! I was more than satisfied with this tasty, hot, plentiful meal. In fact, I had an Asian meal at a sit down restaurant earlier this month which wasn't half as flavourful, nor half as large, nor as hot, and it cost twice as much. Oh dear. I am in trouble. As if I wasn't already a shameless mall crawler, living a 5 minute walk from Halifax Shopping Centre. Now I want to go there everyday...to eat! I had been waiting with baited breath for the Thai Express to open and boy was it worth the wait. As far as "fast food" goes, it doesn't get better than this. The place is very organized and clean as far as I can see. All the fresh ingredients are on display and you can watch your food being handled and prepared. Far less sketch than other places where someone emerges from the mysterious and questionably up-to-code back kitchen with a giant vat of rice/noodles/whatever and dumps it into a tray under the heat lamp where it could very well sit for hours, exposed to God knows what. Eww! At Thai Express your dish is made to order as you watch. For most dishes, you can you select the choice of protein (chicken beef, shrimp, tofu), flavour (basil, curry, etc.) and even your desired heat (mild, medium or spicy). I say go for spicy! Anyway, the combinations are endless. I really could eat there everyday! The Fried Rice with fresh basil and beef is scrumptious and the Pad Thai is pretty freaking decent. The Imperial Rolls (veggie spring rolls) add a nice crunch to your meal. And next time I will try the mango salad which looks super fresh and delicious. It's a popular spot so you may be in for a longer wait than the other food stands, but if you have the time, it is SO worth it. Oh, and even the take out containers are super cute. It's a FRESH FOOD FAST revolution and Thai Express just raised the bar!! I've been dying to try Thai Express since the day they erected the 'Coming Soon' sign in the Shopping Centre food court. I'm happy to report that it was well worth the wait! The wow factor: I'm a bit of a voyeuristic foodie, and Thai Express certainly offers an eyeful. I happily watched as the cooks plucked one fresh ingredient after another before heading to the wok. My dish: I tried the red curry with chicken, and it easily rivalled the best red curry I've had in Halifax. It was fresh, sweet, spicy and downright delicious. In sum: Wow... just wow! read more

Tried this place for the first time today and loved it. Had the chicken pad Thai and although it was a tiny bit gluey it tasted great. Had one of the largest and freshest tasting spring rolls I have ever had. Also got the mango salad, wonderful taste and just the right amount of crunch in the mango, I hate soft mango in a mango salad . The line up was long but once you placed you order you had it within 5 mins. They asked you if you wanted mild medium or spicy, I do love spicy food but today I got medium and honestly I could not taste any spice at all. But really spicy food is not something that really translates well here in Canada, our taste buds are a little low on the spice scale, as I am sure if you asked for really spicy here vrs say jacamica you would see a world of difference . I can't believe I'm rating a Thai Express a 4. I'm from Ottawa, and there's a Thai Express in every mall, my favorite is the one in Rideau, they know my order.. It's kind of pathetic. Anyway, I'm in New Glasgow, NS right now unfortunately... And I was sad that I would have to go a few months without my precious chicken pad sew, so of course when I found out there was a Thai Express in Halifax I was ecstatic. My dad works in Halifax so I got him to bring me home my fave dish. Now, I know it wasn't because it was a few hours old that it wasn't as good as Ottawa's, because I used to bring it to work for lunch... The chicken was a bit tougher than Ottawa's, they were more stingy on the sauce and it wasn't extra spicy like I usually ask for. However, there was more chicken and egg in it, but I'm a big fan of the broccoli. My dad says it was extremely busy and I think that's wonderful, Thai Express opened my eyes to the wonderful world of Thai food, and I've since enjoyed Thai food at several different restaurants in several different cities. I hope it has the same effect on some of you too. They also make a REALLY good red curry in my opinion, the second best I've had, I'm just usually in the mood for pad sew. I got the worst service ever from this place today. It was 12:45pm, so the end of the lunch rush, and there was a girl in front of me with two orders and I had two orders. They messed everything up, asked only me for my receipts to proved what is payed for after explaining thrice, to three different people. They then threw out the receipts I needed for my coworkers (thank goodness they trust me!). They gave me an order that wasn't mine then took it back. The little asian lady with the firey temper needs to butt the hell out and let the cooks do their job. I will not be back to this location ever. No matter how much I love Thai express and how nostalgic I am about the food. This place doesn't deserve anyone's business! Stay away!! read more

On a quick jaunt to return some shoes on my lunch hour, I decided to try Thai Express. My sister is in Mtl and sings its praises as a great fast food option. It wasnt so fast, seeing as I was there at 1230, but it was absolutely worth the wait! I ordered the chicken stir fry and opted to have medium spice. It was more than I was expecting, but it was the perfect burn-your-lips-off tingle without the runny nose that can accompany so many spicy dishes. As long as I'm not running for the nearest source of water, I like my spice. The chicken was great, no gristle or yucky looking bits, and it was sliced really thin to cook quickly. The veggies were a perfect tendercrisp, much better than soggy overcooked veggies I often come across. The portion was MASSIVE. It easily could feed me for two meals, but I picked out all the goodness and tossed about half the rice. I also had an imperial roll on the side, it was a hot and crispy little vegetarian bundle and I wished I had one more for the road. Next time I need a mall meal, I will be back in the line at Thai Express. read more

I had my first Thai Express experience in the Toronto Airport in January and was immediately jealous that we didn't have one for ourselves in Halifax. To my surprise, while visiting the mall a month later, I saw the newest addition and nearly jumped for joy in excitement. Thai Express is the perfect fast food joint - offering fresh, yummy thai food at a reasonable price. I am a serrrrrrrrious thai food fan but always have to resist the urge to splurge every other day because my budget just doesn't allow for that much eating out. This is why I love this joint - for about $10-15, you can get a delicious, hot and healthy bowl of thai food. Quick and easy. The variety of their menu is great for a fast food place! With limited choices of Asian food in the Halifax Shopping Centre, Thai Express sure stands out. It seems they have reduced the portion size over the years. I was especially disappointed at the tiny take-out box they squeezed my order in last time. Because of this I now try my best to "stay" instead of "to-go" My favourite dish is their #3 yellow curry with chicken. I like the sweetness and the aroma of coconut milk. I also like the fact they can spice up your order to your liking. However I often find the vegetables are still on the raw side, and that's why I stop ordering their green curry, which has raw eggplants. Yuck. read more

I tried the one at MicMac mall, Scotia Sq. mall, and spring garden one and this one. To sum it up, it is roughly 2-3 dollars cheaper than Talay thai, Chabaa, and Kajohn thai/Thai Ivory, but fast food quality and smaller serving. You get what you pay for. I think they should throw out if the vegetables are not to par because you could taste rotten even it is loaded with sauce. Delish! I had my first ever Thai experience at Thai Express just a few days ago. And while I have nothing to compare it to, I can solidly say it was delicious! Fresh ingredients, freshly prepared to order. No soggy food that has sat under a heat lamp here, unlike most other fast food places. The Pad Thai was scrumptious. Mmm Thai Express. It's important to realize that this is a food court restaurant - so not everything is always going to be perfect. However, I have had mostly good experiences so far. Their Pad Thai is delicious - I like being able to decide how spicy I want it, and add peanuts or schiracha to my taste. I like the fresh rolls too - carrots, lettuce, cilantro, mint and rice noodles wrapped in rice paper with spicy peanut sauce. Yummy! One of the other great things is the mini soup - it has real chicken in it, lots of veggies, noodles and bean sprouts for a really really reasonable price. I often add it on to my meal so I can take it for lunch the next day. Pet peeves: they are always really busy so there's sometimes a mess of peanuts, and often the shakers are empty. But it is a food court, and there's never anyone sitting on their butt, so you know they're doing the best they can to get your tasty thai food cooked as soon as possible. read more

I had previously seen these Thai Express restaurants in other provinces, but had never tried them - after all, how good could food court Thai food be? Last month I tried the one at Halifax Shop - picking up 3 dishes for me and a couple coworkers. We all have different tastes and all had ordered something different......and we were all quite happy with the food. The dishes are cooked to order in front of you. So the food that you get is fresh and hot! I tried the Mic Mac Mall location this month. Again, was not disappointed. Both locations have some of the friendly staff members I have ever met. Not sure who does the hiring, but they are doing a gold-star job! I am not a huge fan of the vegetable spring roll - it isn't bad, but it also isn't as impressive as the rest of the food that comes out of there (just my opinion, of course). I like spice - but for those of you who are a little spice conscious, when you say medium or spicy - make sure you mean it. This place takes its spicy heat seriously. If you don't like spice, make sure you indicate you want low or not spicy. read more

I'm dropping these guys a star because of their choice to be involved in the SPC (student price card) program when they clearly have no idea how it works. The card is supposed to save you 10% off a meal, but they take that to mean "if you add a drink and imperial roll which adds $2.50 to your order, you will then be able to save a whole 25 cents on your entire bill!" In comparison, at every other place you can use this card, you save 10% on the entire meal price whether it is $10, $12.95...whatever! Umm...no thanks. On a beautiful Tuesday, with a tight timeline, I ventured to the brand new food court of the Halifax Shopping Centre. Overwhelmed by the options, I knew there was only one choice - the restaurant who's name invokes a sense of adventure and speed.... you guessed it Thai Express. A tight menu of 8 combos offered seemingly countless options. I quickly honed in on the stir fry with tofu with a ginger-infused array of veggies (carrot, onion, green pepper). There were three options for level of "spice" - mild, medium or "spicy". Not being one to back down from a challenge, I went for spicy, which when I am made CEO of Thai Express, will be renamed "Turbo Mega Dragon Spicy" because it has some serious spicy kick. It's a horrible feeling when you know you're getting a cold. I wanted something hot, I wanted soup. Since I was staying at a hotel, attached to the mall, I didn't have a far distance to walk. I found Thai express. I ordered their Thai soup, which is a chicken broth soup with rice noodles. You have your choice to add chicken, shrimp, beef, fish, tofu and vegetables. They ask you how spicy you want it. I asked for spicy. It was so delicious, I felt that the heat would dissipate my cold. I wish. Overall, for quick Thai food, check out Thai express. Please keep in mind that this review is in the context of Thai Express being a food court restaurant. I was in the Halifax Shopping Centre doing some shopping, when I decided I needed to refuel before the bus ride home. Wanting something a little different, perhaps something hot and "noodle-y" I decided upon Thai Express. Having been tempted by a few other food court patrons feasting on huge bowls of yummy looking soup, I decided to follow suit. I chose to go with the chicken Tom Yum soup, with medium heat. The plastic bowl it came in was absolutely huge! It was packed with bean sprouts, carrots, tomatoes, some other veggies(which I've forgotten) and oodles and oodles of noodles. It was everything I expected: piping hot, with a nice kick and very filling. As I sat, devouring my soupy goodness, I noticed a gentleman next to me indulging in some Pad Thai. It looked fantastic. Next time I find myself hungry whilst on a shopping mission, I will surely be back to give it a try! read more

If there is such a thing as high-end food court dining, I think this is it. You wait a little while, so it's not quite "fast food" but it's definitely delicious and made-to-order. I had a basil chicken stir fry with a spring roll and I had no complaints. The combo came in at about $10 (which seems a bit high when you consider you can get a similar lunch at a proper restaurant like ChaBaa Thai), but if you're looking for food court food that's not a greasy burger, this is a great option. read more
