    Chicken pad thai
    D'Arcy L.

I was so amazed to find out there are three locations for Cha Baa Thai. I've eaten at their location at a Burnside and now wanted to try their Bedford location. I'll get to the location downtown at some time in the future. Entering the building you have the feeling that it occupied a different restaurant but the decor is nice subtle and when I came by late (2pm) it wasn't busy. I ordered up a Chicken Pad thai for lunch and was thoroughly impressed. Where I live in Montreal it's very tough to get a consistent good quality pad thai. Many places do it in all kind of ways. Sometimes you wonder who taught them what a pad thai is? Back to my meal here it was delicious, a healthy mix of chicken, firm tofu, peanuts and green onion. Serving size is generous. The menu is diverse and has lots of options including curries and other wok fried Thai dishes. Overall a very enjoyable lunch!

Hot & sour soup...I've never had 1/4 of a tomato in it before. Very HOT!

The food was okay, but nothing great. I'm not a fan of a place where you have to piece together a meal, and doesn't offer any combos. I had to order appetizers (4 spring rolls), and Thai hot & sour soup, and my 2 entrees separately. Oh, and I had to order a bowl of rice separately...really..rice isn't included?? Let me start by saying that I've eaten at Thai Ivory a number of times already (all 3 locations actually) and have never had a bad meal. I've had bad service, but have always enjoyed the meals! I love Thai food and I'm comparing it to them. I heard about Cha Baa Thai being good too, so thought we'd give it (take-out) a try! Let's start with the appetizer...The spring rolls were tiny, about half the size of what I would have expected, not filled to capacity, and felt like they were double rolled. There was too much wrapper on them and not enough crunch to them. The sauce was okay too, but nothing to rave about. The Hot & sour soup lived up to it's name! I didn't taste the sour because I was too busy downing a glass of milk (instead of my wine) with it. Wow! Flaming hot! I love hot stuff, but this was a bit too hot, and not enjoyable! I'm also not used to having 1/4 chunks of a tomato in my hot & sour soup. The food itself was fresh and just okay. We had the sweet & sour chicken which was good, once I plated it over my rice that I had to buy separately (I'm still bitter about that). It didn't really have a compelling sweet & sour flavor. The chicken was tender though. I would have liked more veggies in this entree. Next was the second entree...the ginger beef. I'm not sure if they forgot the ginger, but there was no gingery taste on my ginger beef, which wasn't as tender as the chicken. All-in-all this meal cost approximately $48 (4 spring rolls, one bowl of soup, one bowl of rice, and 2 entrees). In comparison, Thai Ivory sells this exact same meal for less than $30 (they have dinner combo meals (not just lunch combos) that come with the spring rolls & soup & rice & they don't skimp on the entree because of this meal deal either) and I have to say Cha Baa Thai didn't live up to Thai Ivory (for food quality) in my opinion.

High quality cuisine, I had the Siam Dipper and the Red Curry Duck - both were amazing! Very affordable and good atmosphere.

Amazing food. Amazing service. Delicious. Hot. Spicy. More than enough of a portion to fill my tummy. Massaman curry with chicken, extra spicy and split a large rice with my buddy who had green curry extra vegetables and extra spicy. We both loved it and we were both super excited that we came back. We had both been before.... Separately, and agreed that the sauces were... Odd? But this experience was beyond amazing. Will be back for sure!! :) :)

I have eaten at the downtown Halifax twice and gotten take-out from there as well, so figured this place would be the same, and it basically is. Casual atmosphere with probably 25 tables/booths in total? Lots of natural light from the windows running the full length of the front, semi-divided by a half wall to another section that's dimmer, but really all one big place. A good amount of Thai decor (artwork, flower vases, etc). There were maybe five tables taken when I arrived around 1pm on a January Sunday. Very friendly, straightforward service. Food arrived in five minutes max! I ordered one of the lunch specials: #5) Cashew Tofu with Spring Roll $ 10.50: Stir fried tofu with mixed vegetables (onion, peppers, carrot) in chili paste sauce. Served with rice and a fried spring roll. A good size where I almost finished the plate and was definitely full. Good flavor but nothing memorable. Surprisingly nice bathrooms, painted in yellows & reds with modern large sinks, two large stalls with wood. Would I go back? Definitely.

Great food and ambiance with so many plants all over the entire restaurant. While I was happy with the food and price, service is definitely lacking. We didn't get water the entire time we were in the restaurant and the lunch meals took way longer than it should have for it being 2 in the afternoon on a Monday with only two other tables occupied. The lunch took about 40 minutes to arrive which was quite brutal and the beer glasses that were brought out were just filthy so I opted to drink right out of the bottle like an animal. Definitely great food but not sure I'd sit in again for the amount of time it took and the filthy glass. It was odd because the rest of the place looked clean and the water glasses were spotless. If not for the really slow service, we'd have given 5 stars. I think I'd opt for take out next time and save myself the wait.

We decided to get take-out and called in our order. The lady said it'd take 20-25 min, and it was ready when hubby picked it up. I ordered the black pepper beef for $14.95 and a side of rice for $4. I thought the price of the rice was a bit much. I requested less red & green peppers and more mushrooms, and they obliged. The taste of the dish itself was just okay. It didn't taste like traditional Thai food to me, or at least not like the kind I'm used to eating. Hubby ordered the Pad Thai with chicken for $14.95 and said there was too much soy sauce or something in it. He didn't really care for it. The price of the dishes were reasonable, thus the 3 stars instead of 2, and the portions were a decent size.

My favourite Asian-styled cuisine!…read more I will shamelessly admit that my boyfriend and I have come here at least once a month over the past 5 years - whether it's for a light lunch or a date night - we adore this place. Firstly, I'd like to address the decor: it is gorgeous! Unlike many other Thai restaurants in Halifax (many of which have plain, blank walls, and minimal decor), this entire restaurant is filled with beautiful figurines, mini waterfalls, and flowers. The place is decked out in gorgeous Thai-themed objects, prints, and designs. For some who may not have a taste for culturally unfamiliar interior decor, this may come across as "tacky" - but for me, the decor is everything! Second, the food: The menu is ENDLESS. There is something for everyone. If you think Thai food isn't for you, or don't necessarily have a taste for Asian cruisine, don't worry! For their "Americanized" dishes, they have familiar dishes such as deep-fried chicken wings (and BBQ chicken), french fries, nuggets, calamari, stirfry, spring rolls, and a variation of soups and salads. If this is your first time, I strongly recommend you try the pad thai. It has certainly been the Thai dish that has stolen the hearts of many first-timers - including myself! Recently, the curry dishes have been top notch! Definitely would recommend. Also: portion sizes are plentiful so you never leave with a dissatisfied stomach! Last but not least, the staff: It appears to me that this is a family-run establishment. The staff are always enthusiastic, polite, and most certainly generous. Ordering a wine that they are almost out of? Don't worry! They'll run to the store to buy more within seconds (even if you insist on accepting a different wine!!!). If you ever have questions regarding the menu - or anything at all - they do not hesitate to answer with full honesty and interest! Needless to say, dining at Thai Ivory is without doubt an experience. The only negative I must say is that I was heartbroken after the closing of the Quinpool location (though I believe driving to the Bedford highway for a bowl of curry is well worth it). They do not get enough business for what they deserve! This may partly be because of the location - or that Thai cuisine may not be the most current food trend on everyone's minds. Regardless, I believe this establishment deserves a successful future.
