I'd give it zero stars if able to. This was by far my worse meal out in a long time. I ordered the ribs lunch special (first I should've known that wasn't a Thai item so what was I thinkin) anyway it came 3 large ribs, coleslaw, rice. The ribs I started to eat and was chewing like it was beef jerky and I kid you not. The waitress came by not long after we received the meals and asked how it was and before I could start talking she was already past our table....so I said the ribs and she turned back "are so tough, so VERY tough" and she thought for a 1/2 minute formulating her response and said we don't eat them like Canadians do all soft and fall off the bone" WTF when I left I took the meal with me to show my daughter who raved of this restaurant (maybe a different location?) Anyway - POS and the server could've totally dealt with this way better. Oh the coleslaw came out of a bag and was so freaking dry - just incredibly awful. The rice - only good thing on the plate. This is for the Chain Lake Drive location. We ordered takeout I got the cashew chicken and rice. The cashew chicken was so disappointing. I have had it in that restaurant and takeout once before it was amazing. This time the takeout container was only half full, there were hardly any vegetables with it, maybe 4 slices of carrot and one piece of green pepper, some chicken but not the usual amount. I was so amazed to find out there are three locations for Cha Baa Thai. I've eaten at their location at a Burnside and now wanted to try their Bedford location. I'll get to the location downtown at some time in the future. Entering the building you have the feeling that it occupied a different restaurant but the decor is nice subtle and when I came by late (2pm) it wasn't busy. I ordered up a Chicken Pad thai for lunch and was thoroughly impressed. Where I live in Montreal it's very tough to get a consistent good quality pad thai. Many places do it in all kind of ways. Sometimes you wonder who taught them what a pad thai is? Back to my meal here it was delicious, a healthy mix of chicken, firm tofu, peanuts and green onion. Serving size is generous. The menu is diverse and has lots of options including curries and other wok fried Thai dishes. Overall a very enjoyable lunch! read more

The food was okay, but nothing great. I'm not a fan of a place where you have to piece together a meal, and doesn't offer any combos. I had to order appetizers (4 spring rolls), and Thai hot & sour soup, and my 2 entrees separately. Oh, and I had to order a bowl of rice separately...really..rice isn't included?? Let me start by saying that I've eaten at Thai Ivory a number of times already (all 3 locations actually) and have never had a bad meal. I've had bad service, but have always enjoyed the meals! I love Thai food and I'm comparing it to them. I heard about Cha Baa Thai being good too, so thought we'd give it (take-out) a try! Let's start with the appetizer...The spring rolls were tiny, about half the size of what I would have expected, not filled to capacity, and felt like they were double rolled. There was too much wrapper on them and not enough crunch to them. The sauce was okay too, but nothing to rave about. The Hot & sour soup lived up to it's name! I didn't taste the sour because I was too busy downing a glass of milk (instead of my wine) with it. Wow! Flaming hot! I love hot stuff, but this was a bit too hot, and not enjoyable! I'm also not used to having 1/4 chunks of a tomato in my hot & sour soup. The food itself was fresh and just okay. We had the sweet & sour chicken which was good, once I plated it over my rice that I had to buy separately (I'm still bitter about that). It didn't really have a compelling sweet & sour flavor. The chicken was tender though. I would have liked more veggies in this entree. Next was the second entree...the ginger beef. I'm not sure if they forgot the ginger, but there was no gingery taste on my ginger beef, which wasn't as tender as the chicken. All-in-all this meal cost approximately $48 (4 spring rolls, one bowl of soup, one bowl of rice, and 2 entrees). In comparison, Thai Ivory sells this exact same meal for less than $30 (they have dinner combo meals (not just lunch combos) that come with the spring rolls & soup & rice & they don't skimp on the entree because of this meal deal either) and I have to say Cha Baa Thai didn't live up to Thai Ivory (for food quality) in my opinion. read more

Very good food. I heard they speak Mandarin but they made really Thai food. The fresh spring roll really fresh and tasty. I ordered Masaman curry beef and my husband ordered Beef Pad Thai. Both of the dishes were good. We love it and definitely come back and would like to bring family come when they come visit. read more

Casual atmosphere with probably 25 tables/booths in total? Lots of natural light from the windows running the full length of the front, semi-divided by a half wall to another section that's dimmer, but really all one big place. A good amount of Thai decor (artwork, flower vases, etc). There were maybe five tables taken when I arrived around 1pm on a January Sunday. Very friendly, straightforward service. Food arrived in five minutes max! I ordered one of the lunch specials: #5) Cashew Tofu with Spring Roll $ 10.50: Stir fried tofu with mixed vegetables (onion, peppers, carrot) in chili paste sauce. Served with rice and a fried spring roll. A good size where I almost finished the plate and was definitely full. Good flavor but nothing memorable. Surprisingly nice bathrooms, painted in yellows & reds with modern large sinks, two large stalls with wood. Would I go back? Definitely. read more

Love the food and usually the service. We decided since we can not visit to order take away for ourselves and the In Laws for a Mother's Day treat. I phoned in the orders in at noon for pick up at 5.30. We arrived to see a line up which looks to be 100 deep. WHY would they accept so many orders all for the same pick up time? Super not impressed. If it we had not already promised to drop off supper to his parents I would have just left. The inside is divided into two sections; to the left is a long window looking out over the parking lot, while to the right it's a bit more intimate and cozy, with both tables and booths. It was a moderate lunchtime crowd, but service was prompt. I ordered a hot & sour soup to start and then went conventional with a pork pad thai. The soup was just fine, good heat and plenty of prawn. The pad thai was a little bland, probably toned down for the local palate, though it was quite plentiful. I had to ask for chopsticks and additional napkins and wasn't even asked if I wanted a drink other than water. Minor niggles. Finally, good thai without having to go downtown. Was in for dinner a few nights ago and was surprised to see the place was pretty empty - does no one know this place is here? Our party ordered a round of spring rolls to start which were DELISH! The spicy sauce with them was so good! Then were 2 ordered of pad thai and panang chicken. Everything was delicious. My ongoing quest for yummy Thai continued in Bedford. This will be a fairly brief review, because we ordered take out rather than ate in and I didn't take any pictures of our food lol We ordered Thai on a warm Friday night after convincing my parents that anything we ordered from Cha Baa wouldn't be too spicy. Normally, my wife and I like our Thai medium spicy, but we took one for the team so that my parents wouldn't be scared off Thai forever. On a scale of mild to wild, they are mild by a mile. As as I have indicated in my previous Thai reviews, our go-to is always curries. So, a red curry with chicken and a vegetable green curry were on the docket. Couple of things that disappointed me when ordering - 1) All of their tofu was pre-fried, so they couldn't accommodate our request for steamed tofu with our vegetable curry. 2) They did not have brown rice as an option as a side, only white rice. Despite my initial disappointment, the curries were very tasty, with fresh strips of chicken and veggies in the red curry (including what appeared to be sweet potatoes) and lots of variety of vegetables in the green curry. I was impressed with the flavour of the coconut-based curry sauce for both the red and green, despite the complete absence of spice heat. I think Cha Baa can be a 4+ star establishment if they addressed the two points above. FYI, if you go on Friday night you might need to wait for a table, the place was packed at 6:30 when I picked up my food. read more

Came here the other night with a few friends. They have done a great job of renovating and decorating inside so it no longer resembles a Wendy's. The outside is a different story, but whatever. They were somewhat busy but it still took quite a while for someone to take our order. Once they did the food arrived in a timely fashion. Thai iced tea was great. Not too sweet and not too strong. Just right. Pad Thai was fine. Nothing spectacular. I preferred the bite of the red chicken curry I had from my friend's plate. I've enjoyed Ch Baa Thai in take-out form before but never been to any of their locations. This was my first foray into the Bedford location, and aside from the fact that the outside still looks like an old Wendy's (Drive-thru window and all!) it is a totally different place! We headed here for my BFF's birthday. Four ladies, out for drinks and delicious Thai food - what could be better?! We were seated very quickly. The inside of this place looks nothing like it's former fast-food days - it's beautiful with lots of greenery, paintings and really comfy booths and tables. We ordered drinks first - 2 wines, a long island iced tea and a regular iced tea. They were all fantastic! Bff's "regular" iced tea tasted delicious and was definitely sweetened with honey. It was fantastic. My long island iced tea was STRONG. I'm talking "WOAH. That's the stuff!" strong! But it was also really, really good so a big win there! We ordered our meals fairly quickly - 2 chicken pad thai, 1 beef thai fried rice and a curry with rice. I will warn you that after this, the service got slow and inattentive. It wasn't particularly busy but for some reason after they took our food order it got slow. Anyways, once the food arrived it was hot, delicious and perfectly prepared. The chicken pad thai was fantastic. Lots of chicken, great sauce, just the right noodles to bean sprout ratio! I hear the curry was fantastic, I can't eat spicy food, and that the thai fried rice was also great. All in all, my bill with drink and pad thai came to about $20 + tip. Ok yelp, I am going to toot my own horn here for a moment. My favorite food ever is Thai food and I've had so much of it I feel I am a Thai food aficionado. Cha Baa Thai is definitely one of the best Thai restaurants I've eaten at. I ordered the masaman curry and chicken pad thai, and a small order of rice. I got it for take out, and it came to about $42... I feel like its a bit more expensive than other Thai restaurants but its worth it. I ordered each very very spicy. I totally appreciate that like 70% of the curry was chicken, I've had lots of Thai food where they're skimpy on the chicken, and the dish is mostly vegetable. The pad thai also had a really good amount of chicken in it and a side of peanuts to put on top. The masaman curry was to die for. The sauce is the perfect consistency - thats another issue I find in other Thai restaurants, the sauce is very soupy and thin. They definitely made this extra extra spicy, it had the perfect (for me) amount of kick to it. The combination of peanut and sweet potato was soooo good. The pad thai was by far the best pad thai I've ever had. The sauce was so flavorful and they topped it with caramelized onions which I've never seen, but blended so well with the pad thai sauce. Again, it had lots of chicken and veggies. Perfect pad thai. Try it! read more

I love Cha Baa Thai Massaman Chicken Curry...it's served in a cauldron containing thick spicy sauce with the heat taken down by sweet coconut milk with an abundance of simmered chicken and sweet potato. Comes with a side of rice. Five star! I'm a big fan of fresh spring rolls and while Cha Baas' are good, I didn't like the chili sauce at all...if they served it with a peanut sauce or a mix of fish sauce and lime juice, I'd be back once a week! My bf and I went to this restaurant last night for dinner. The restaurant itself is quite cute and has a nice atmosphere. The waitresses made us feel quite rushed and we had our appetizers before they asked us if we wanted something to drink. I actually had to find one to ask for drinks as they were all sitting down eating. Service aside, the food was excellent. We ordered spring rolls and wonton soup for appetizers. The Wonton soup was fantastic! Had the perfect balance of flavours and didn't need to use any soy sauce. The spring rolls were nice and crispy. For our main we both ordered pad thai with prawns. The pad thai had a nice flavour with the right amount of heat. The prawns were cooked just right. The service could be better, but all in all I would definitely go back. read more

LOVE this place! I always have the chicken pad thai because it is delicious. The green curry is a bit on the hot side, so beware if you are sensitive...it is tasty though! Service: AMAZING! As soon as you sit down, you are served a huge glass of ice cold water. Within minutes, they are taking your order. And before you know it, your food is there. I was in town for a meeting and my client want to have some Thai food and someone recommended this place. I understand they have 3 restaurants but we choose this one because it was more convenient. The Service - I would give it 1 out of 5 stars. We must had stand by the door for a good 5 minutes before someone decided to seat us down. There were 3 waitresses and only 1 other table. When we sat down the waitress did not bother to ask us for drinks and just said be back in a few minutes and left. It took another 15 minutes before the waitress came back to take our orders. If I was not with a client I would of just left and not even bother trying the food. The food - 5 out of 5 stars. For the bad service we had we were little worried about the food quality. I was pleasantly surprised on the quality of the dishes. we each had a hot and sour soup to start and I had the Spicy Seafood Curry and my client had the Thai Chili Fish for the entree. You can really taste the freshness of the ingredients, it was appealing to the eye, aromas from the spices were great and it tasted fantastic. The hot and sour soup was a good size, the flavor of the broth is really good, was surprise to find a few good size shrimps at the bottom of the bowl. The sauces for both main entrees were really good, just the right amount of spicy and did not over power the seafood at all, just a perfect balance. Both of us were really happy with the meal. The only complaint would be non of the spicy dishes we had came with any steam rice which is odd for an asian restaurant. We had to order it separately. I would definitely go back again for the food, but if good service is important to you, I would try some place else. read more

I love the food from Cha Baa Thai! I've ordered take-out from here several times in the past, but today was my first time eating at the restaurant. My wife and I went for lunch and we ordered the Fresh Spring Rolls (not to be confused with the deep fried kind) as an appetizer, and we shared Chicken Pad Thai and Ginger Chicken for the main course. The Fresh Spring Rolls were very flavourful and came with a nice sauce to drizzle on top. If you enjoy fresh vegetables, then you'll love them. The Chicken Pad Thai was delicious, as usual, and that was no surprise since I've had theirs many times before. We hadn't tried the Ginger Chicken before, and it did not disappoint. The vegetables that were mixed in with the chicken had a particularly gingery kick that I enjoyed. We had a couple minor complaints about the dishes that the food was served on. When I've ordered take-out, their containers keep everything piping hot as it should be. Today our main courses were served on glass platters, but I would guess that they were cold when the hot food was served up on them. That took most of the heat out of the food before we had a chance to eat it. My other criticism is with the individual square plates we were given to eat from. They were plastic. That seemed odd. Even with the complaints, I still loved the food and I'm giving 5 stars. Part of that is because of the consistently good quality from my to-go orders in the past. read more

I'm so happy to have Cha Baa Thai around! I had the lunch special take-out twice, and both times I enjoyed it tremendously. First time I had the panang beef curry. Rich curry sauce fueled by coconut cream and peanuts. A slight hint of spiciness. The beef felt like steak, ie. not skimpy. The 2nd time I had the Thai Red Curry chicken. Still delicious. I'm impressed because the thickness and creamy-ness of their curry is not because of cornstarch but because of the actual coconut cream. It's rich but doesn't leave me feel greased out afterwards. I'm waiting for my next excuse to get a lunch take-out here. read more

I have been previously for take out right after they had FINALLY opened(longest reno in the life of the Bdfrd Hwy strip!) and on that trip I had arrived a little early apparently. They do not open until 500PM for supper...even on weekends. So--keep that in mind. We went for a sit down meal with another couple recently. They've done a great job on the inside of the space for decore. However--the exterior still could use a face lift. Looks a little rough for a place like this. A table for 4 could be a little larger as the majority of guests order several dishes and just share the food amongst each other. So we found the table space a little tight in that aspect. Ordered a bottle of wine. When the waitress came over to pour it into our 4 glasses it was the most un-profesional pouring job I'd ever seen. It certainly wasnt a gentle pour. She spilt atleast half a glass all over the table that almost splashed all over us. The part that really irked me....no discount was given on that bottle of wine. In my opinion...if a significant amount of an over priced $30.00 bottle of wine(what is prob $18.00 in the NSLC) we should have been compensated...even just a little--out of courtesy. The food was stellar, as I knew it would be. Spring rolls, chicken skewers, S&S Pork, Lemongrass Chicken, Red Curry Beef(quite spicy) & Pad Thai...all...super delicious. No complaints in regards to the good. Quality was as good as the Dartmouth location that I have visited quite frequently. One other thing that we found odd was that we asked for the bill to be split in half. Which they had no issue doing....however, it gave the total only? No breakdown of the food we ordered. So we'd have no idea if we were over charged or even if the bill was correct. In the end..pricing was quite reasonable...based on the totals we each paid for all that food...we think!
