Where to start.... called ahead and was put on the call ahead list? Told 30 minutes. Ok Walked in the door 30 minutes later. Was told twenty more minutes. Twenty minutes later told 10 more minutes. Any ways an hour and 15 minutes later we had a table. Ambience. 2-3 stars. Vinyl wood flooring on the walls is just cheesy and cheap looking. Same exact floor plan Topp Salad had when they were in the space. Food wise. 2 stars it was mid to low level sushi. Lacked flavor and the rolls were undersized and underwhelming. It was just bland. Service, our waitress was fairly attentive 3 stars. Poor management with zero damage control. Knowing we had been waiting an hour and fifteen and not the 30 we were quoted was bad form. What a fantastic little restaurant! It's a tradition for me to take my husband to sushi for his birthday and I'm so glad to have chosen Taku Sushi Bar for the occasion. They don't require reservations so we arrived at 8pm on a Thursday night. There was street parking right out front and you don't have to pay after 8pm so that worked out really well. We walked in and were greeted immediately. There were maybe 8 other people dining at the time. Our drink orders were taken and we set to browsing the menu. We decided to order the Shrimp Explosion and Fried Octopus Balls to start. The shrimp appie was SO GOOD! We settled on the White Tiger and I think it was called Crispy Mango Tuna roll? I can't remember but they were both delicious. Service was great, albeit our server was a bit too quick to run off - she took my drink order and left before my husband could even open his mouth LOL but it all worked out in the end. I went to the Taku Sushi Bar on 4/29/25.... because I just really wanted to take myself out for dinner. My parents were away and I just wanted to get out. I had been wanting to visit the Taku Sushi Bar since I had read reviews about it earlier in the year and I was NOT DISAPPOINTED AT ALL!!! The owner, Gerry, was working at the sushi station and I got to meet him and speak with him after my dinner was finished. He's really nice and it's obvious that he loves what he does. I had three things for dinner - the tempura appetizer ($12.00), the Tempura shrimp roll ($9.00), and the crispy tuna roll ($17.00). They were AMAZING. Gerry and his staff go to a great deal of effort and it shows in their food... and in the fact that a lot of people stopped to speak with Gerry and to thank him for the meals that they had. My server - Jasmine K. - was great. She's very nice and she's an excellent server. She knows the food and she seems to genuinely care about good service. YOU WILL LOVE THIS RESTAURANT. My husband and I ate here last night (Saturday) and arrived around 6:30 and luckily there were two vacant stools at the bar. The place was hopping! Colby, the bartender was warm and friendly and made me their special sake ginger margarita garnished with a fresh mint leaf. Michael drank an IPA but it was in a can because they do not have beer on tap. Colby did pour it into a chilled glass though so that good. We ordered the soft shell crab roll, baked oysters over slaw, unagi roll and some special salmon roll. All were delicious. I also had a cup of miso soup which was yummy. The music overhead was awesome. A nice medley of classics; Carly Simon, Elton John, Eric Clapton and The Eagles! We will definitely be back. read more

I've had the same bartender/server for two times now and she is incredible! My bf doesn't like sushi so he got the chicken teriyaki lunch portion and it was huge. Delicious! I got the salmon and fatty tuna nigiri as well as the uni special hand roll with caviar. Something new for me and all were high quality and incredible in taste. Delicious food and really good quality fish!! I absolutely loved the sushi - the torched salmon toro nigiri was EXCELLENT and I ordered another pair after the first one. My toro truffle maki was a little overwhelming (not as much flavor as anticipated). I would definitely come back here and order more nigiri! Friday evening, we checked out Taku at its new location, just up the street from the old. Compared to the first location, this space is brighter with some lovely, elegant, clean, and modern touches. The bar seats many more customers, and the chairs are very comfy. There is more dining room space as well. We were there fairly early in the evening, and by the time we finished, folks were waiting for seating! I am so happy for Taku and the success they are having! The new Taku! Who knew it could be even better than its first location on Rantoul! Bigger and somehow so much better!! The ginger old fashioned was perfection in my mouth. Could have been a bit more appealing to the eye. Hence no photo. The flavor though was something I'll dream about. The tuna tataki was the best I've had in a long time. I had never heard of this place, but a friend recommended it and said it was good, so I paid it a visit since I'm always up for finding new excellent sushi restaurants, which are very tough to find in Metro Boston. To my surprise, he was right, the sushi here is excellent, some of the best I have had north of Boston since Sushi Island / original Junji closed and a much wider range of options than most suburban sushi restaurants and significantly higher quality. Food came out quickly. I have two complaints which I consider minor given how good my food was (and waitress service was great too): When I order nigiri, I don't want it dressed with some type of garnish/sauce/topping. While the sauce wasn't terrible, it was completely unnecessary and took away from the flavor I wanted to taste. I am sure people like these garnishes (scallion is ok), but it should have been advertised so I could have asked for it to be removed (note to self for next time). Two - Beverly thinks they are downtown Boston or Cambridge and requires you to pay a meter kiosk to park until 8pm. This is completely unnecessary and anti-business. This is obviously not the fault of the restaurant. On the TV they seem to show Bob Ross non-stop which is kind of funny. read more

Simply phenomenal sushi. We have been here so many times and it's consistently excellent. Try the maki covered with toro -- the jalapeño and ginger sauce and seared fish are such a fabulous combination. The owner is kind and so are the servers. You can't go wrong! read more

How this place has 4.7 stars is beyond me. As an avid sushi eater, this is by far the worst sushi I have ever had at an extreme price. They mask the fishy flavor with overpowering sauces and toppings to hide the poor quality. Complained to our server as we ate less than 5 out of our 30 pieces of sushi and her response was "oh ok!" Servers also have face piercings and head sushi maker makes the sushi bare handed (no gloves) which are both extremely unappetizing. Not worth your time or money. read more

Chef Jerry puts everything he has into each dish. This restaurant isn't just a job for him - it's clearly his passion. While Taku is on the delivery apps, we have never ordered takeout before. So much of the magic is being there in person and witnessing the art and beauty that's in each dish you order. Every roll you order is a unique work of art, and you're not going to find better sushi on the North Shore. Each piece of fish is so fresh, and it's clear that Jerry will not compromise on quality. In my 10 years on the North Shore, I've yet to see any sushi place compete with Taku in any way. Prices are also extremely reasonable - especially taking the exceptional quality into account. The new space is also amazing - while the old location was a dim and cozy atmosphere, this is a more bright and lively location that I think allows the restaurant to really grow into itself (while still somehow maintaining a bit of the coziness that we loved at the old location). Huge perk of the new spot is the full bar! We renamed our dinner-out budget line to "Jerry" - if we have the ability to go out to dinner, 99% of the time we're going to Taku. Cannot recommend Taku enough! read more

Came here on a Wednesday night and it was decently packed, we had to wait a little for a table but not too long. The inside has a nice atmosphere, smaller than I thought but still cute. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, although he seemed in a rush because it seemed like he was one of maybe two waiters there. There was a decent crowd and they had a lot of bussers and less waiters which was strange to me. For appetizers I got a miso soup and it was very good. I have had better at another sushi restaurant though, this one was very salty. The house salad was good, dressing was very sweet if thats what you like. Personally I'm not a fan. The tekka maki was amazing, the tuna was so good and the color was beautiful. The avocado rolls were also delicious and so fresh. The rainbow roll with only tuna was really good and I'm picky about my sushi but this place did awesome. We also got the chicken katsu which was amazing. The fried veggies were so good.. as well as the sauce on the chicken it was to die for. The poke bowl was very fresh and the veggies were super good. The chef got to choose the fish and they used all salmon. Which is fine but the person who ordered it probably should have just said they preferred tuna, which isn't the chefs fault. Food was super good and I would definitely come back to try more of their maki. Also even though they were pretty full the food still came out fast. read more

I came here for lunch with my husband. I ordered 2 special rolls some apps and a drink. One of the rolls wasn't what I expected and it turns out I (unsurprisingly) read the menu wrong. Everything else was phenomenal! Incredible quality and flavor! I did not ask nor did I expect for that item to be taken off the bill yet they did anyway. Some of the best sushi I have had in my life! The specials are to die for; have trying the California Uni I have never had fresher seafood. The service was impeccable as the waitress explained the menu, the process and the history of the restaurant. The Manager came over and even talked to me about the sushi specials, and some of the dishes I tried. There was a mishap with one of our dishes and when we pointed it out, the dish was taken off the bill and we were given a couple of items for free. We had a excellent server! Other than the dish mentioned, we had a wonderful meal from beginning to end. The people who made our food were creative and everything was well presented and tasted great. Made reservation for 3 for a birthday celebration for my husband. The host wouldn't sit us at a booth because "those are for parties of 4" (mind you 4 of the 6 were empty) and offered a table for 2 with chair sticking in aisle that was so small we couldn't have eaten (table was maybe 2 ft x 2 ft). Unfortunately we did not have a great experience here. We had tried to go on a couple of occasions but always too crowded. Went on a whim around 8:00 on a week night and was able to get a table. I had one of the specials which was really good but my husband's food was off. He said the miso soup tasted like dishwater and half his sushi had white rice while we requested brown rice. The hand roll has a tablespoon size dollop of wasabi inside (!) making it inedible. Lastly, staff started sweeping and closing up around us despite not quite being closing time. Went there to celebrate a special anniversary and arrived on a Friday night without reservations (what was I thinking???), but decided to wait. So glad for that decision. The atmosphere is bright and hip at the same time. Sure, the tables are tight, don't expect dining intimacy here and that is a good thing ("oohh..what is that?" asking the neighboring table). Our server was absolutely fantastic, she had a notepad with descriptions of nearly all the cocktails/whiskeys so she could guide along to a best choice! Even with the place being packed, she was friendly and attentive. When it came to the food, all I can say is that everything was fresh, beautifully prepared and presented.
