Combo 9 - lobster and scallop rolls (comes with miso soup)
    Jessica L.

Came for lunch and we were seated right away. Ordered after a few minutes but didn't get our food until 40 minutes later, even though people who arrived after us had already finished their meals by then. After they realized they forgot about us, they made our orders right away, but then forgot to give us cutlery. I got combo 9 (scallop and lobster rolls), and the rolls were nothing special, actually tasted quite plain. I expected the seafood to taste more fresh here in Halifax. My boyfriend got combo 10, and the rolls were pretty good. Service was very friendly, but the fact that they forgot about us rubbed us the wrong way.

It was our first time here - we're usually pretty loyal to the sushi spots we go to, but decided to try something new yesterday! We sat ourselves, it was a busy little spot for 4:30 on a Friday; good vibes! I ordered the Miso soup to start, then we each order two sushi dishes. My soup came pretty quickly and was as good as any other Miso soup. Not too long later E got her first dish, then she finished it (sushi pizza) then she got her second dish and was just about finished that one too before I got my rolls. It was annoying. So, we basically took turns watching eachother eat. Her sushi pizza was tasty (I tried a piece) but the rice patty bottom was semi-crumbly. My rolls were delicious - no complaints there. I would agree our meal was worth the money, but would be reluctant to do back based on how our meals were brought out - that wasn't enjoyable.

We have ordered from Tako for years and have never been disappointed. Fresh, worth the wait, love their chefs special rolls.

While Asian restaurants often succeed in spite of the curse of the long menu (see: every chain family restaurant ever), like many restaurants of any and every ethnicity, the small, hole in the wall ones are often the best. Not forced to pander to a bigger audience by shooting for the middle of the road, they're able to fill their seats by doing what they do best. Tako is one of these, located in a food oasis in a wasteland of apartments and unfettered development, along with other reputable restaurants Layla, and Nine + 9.  My friends and I had actually been targeting Nine + 9 for dinner, but they were full up on the Saturday night that we had arrived, and had a 40 minute wait. Luckily, Tako was next door, and while it was also nearly full, we were able to get a table right away. I got some nice loose leaf green tea while we perused the menu, which was chock full of various sushi options (which I skipped right over), plus more interesting (to me) things like their tonkatsu, yakitori, and of course their namesake ramen. Being the lover of dumplings and noodles that I am, I went with the gyoza to start, and the tonkotsu ramen.  The kitchen for the hot dishes must have been slammed, because one of the guys got their sushi before we had even got our dumplings, and was nearly done when the ramen arrived. That said, it was worth the wait. My gyoza had a perfect crust of top, whose shattering crisp texture was a nice contrast for the soft, supple dumpling below. The dipping sauce made for a tangy foil to the rich dumplings. Tonkotsu ramen, not to be confused with tonkatsu or the tonkatsu ramen that's also available here, is made with a broth from long-simmered pork bones, which gives it a creamy texture and colour. The tonkotsu here comes with the Japanese version of char siu, a pickled egg, and a slice of nori. It was a flavour packed bowl of soup and noodles, with tons of umami. The broth was excellent and the noodles had a spot on, firm texture. This is Japanese comfort food at some of its best.  Service was friendly and attentive throughout, despite the busy room.  Tako is a Japanese place that you can go to and thrive in even if you're not a sushi fan. Get some dumplings, get some ramen, and marvel over the people who are just eating raw fish and rice.

We moved here from Toronto 2 years ago and I've been going down the list of recommended sushi in HRM. Tako is it! I need to come back for ramen next time but the sushi today was great. Not a lot of rice, which is how I like it. Highly recommended!

I've really enjoyed all the sushi I've tried here so far! They are always very friendly and often put a little extra sample of something in my takeout container (this evening was a few pieces of sweet potato tempura). Some of my favorites so far are the Mango Roll, the Spicy Salmon roll, the CAA roll and the Vegetable Maki Combo. My only complaint would be that I wish they didn't use Styrofoam for their takeout containers. There are lots of other options out there that are more environmentally friendly.

Easy five stars! One for coming to Halifax and opening this great restaurant in Clayton Park. One for the friendly service from the nice owner who remembers you, and my smiling waitress. One for my yummy lunch (Combo 10) which is a green dragon roll with fiery mayo dragon eyes (see photo) and a yummy hurricane roll (maki with spicy salmon spicy tuna and tempura bits, how can you lose? ) One for the very nice Japanese decor and atmosphere (and I appreciated the warm circular heater which I sat next to). And one for opening at lunch with delicious specials for sushi lovers. Go, sushi lovers! You won't be disappointed!

Charming Chef-Owner who is passionate about the quality of his food, and will gladly chat with you if you like up at the sushi bar. Authentic (hard-to-find) menu items such as takoyaki and Japanese style curry rice. The BEST ramen in Halifax. The BEST curry rice, period. --------------------------------- JAPANESE CURRY REVIEW - CANT STOP WONT STOP EATING THIS So, I may have prematurely written some stuff about some other local restaurants having the best Japanese Style Curry. WHOOPS! This stuff should be a controlled substance because its so addictively delicious. I know a lot of you yelpers in Halifax haven't had it because A) its not a common menu item and; B) what the hell is "Japanese curry". Well. Let me introduce you to the food you'll crave weekly for the rest of your life. If you like curry in any other form, you'll probably like this even more. It is the quintessential Japanese home cooking, comfort food. There are as many curry recipes in Japan as their are families. I had the good fortune of living in Japan a while back and this dish was something I'd have at least once per week over there. I was genuinely sad that I couldn't find it in Halifax for YEARS and resorted to developing my own recipe from available resources, but it just wasn't the same! Now that I've found somewhere to relieve my craving, I'm just so very happy that I could write an extra long yelp review! While sitting at the sushi bar waiting for my order, I asked Tako's chef, who lived and trained as a chef in Osaka, Japan, about his curry recipe and his eyes lit up as if he had been waiting a lifetime for someone to ask him about it. His version of Japanese curry is what most would consider to be "traditional Japanese" (interesting history behind this dish if you care to google it or see my link below). So the traditional form, as with most Japanese things, is simple consisting of a few expertly prepared high quality ingredients, and nothing more. In Tako Sushi & Ramen's case, the curry sauce is the star of the show with sautéed onions to enhance the sweetness. The flavour is deep and rich, slightly sweet and it is nothing like any other curry dish you'd had. Served with a portion of rice and topped with a meat or vegetables of your choice. I recommend the Chicken or Pork Katsu curry if you haven't tried it before and if you like it spicy, make sure to ask for it spicy! If you can convince them to throw down some extra sauce, even better. Absolutely a must try! If this sounds amazing to you, here's a short segment about the dish's history http://youtu.be/B4CMe7Y-nKQ?t=10m4s --------------------------------- RAMEN REVIEW - A++++++ I've driven FAR out of my way to fill a craving for their tonkatsu ramen: A gigantic serving of deliciously firm ramen served in a long-simmered cloudy whitish pork bone based broth (called tonkotsu, not to be confused with tonkatsu pork cutlet) with a boiled egg and assorted vegetables. Also served with tonkatsu (breaded & fried pork cutlet) on the side over a bed of shredded cabbage. Makes great leftovers too! They also have miso and soy based broths for ramen. If you aren't sure, ask the chef and he'll probably help you figure out what you'll like most. --------------------------------- TAKOYAKI - SOMETHING NEW TO TRY I've also had their takoyaki: a small piece of boiled octopus (hear me out) in a fried ball of batter with a crunchy outer and slightly runny inside, topped with Japanese mayo (spiced with mustand and hondashi powders) and tonkatsu (bbq-ish) sauce. I don't like boiled octopus, but I love this! I wouldn't say it's an "acquired" taste, but the texture of the runny batter inside may surprise you because the whole operation looks vaguely like deep fried timbits topped with sauces. When I say "surprise", I mean at first you'll go "Ohhh Whaaat the.." and then you'll go: "Ohhh my gaaahhhh yesss, more please". Five pieces come in an order so maybe something to try with a group. This is the Japanese equivalent of a halifax donair, because its pretty much the best thing to eat while stumbling home late at night.

    Ramen

Came for dinner. Had ramen, tonkatsu and salmon dinner. Also had the dumplings which was really good. They make them the traditional way with rice flour crust on top. I've never seen this before but it was really good. Haven't tried the sushi yet but plan to The dessert taiyaki-fried bean cakes were tasty also

I biked a lot on this one particular day (37 miles to be exact) and what I was hankering for was Dan Dan noodles from my all time favorite 9 + Nine (go read my review and then get your butt over there) but unbeknownst to me it was closed for the day (Tuesday of all days to be closed)... It was then we (we being me and my lovely counterpart Meegan) noticed just a few doors down a new restaurant with the glowing "Open" Sign and discovered Tako Sushi & Ramen... (I'm kind of grateful for the closed sign on 9+) Apparently it has been open for a month but we were so focused on visions of ginger beef and Dan Dan that we overlooked what is potentially another great find in Clayton Park. Not one to pass up an opportunity to check out a new place and see where it falls on my "Best Place to Get my Nosh On" list that is ever growing, we walked in and took a seat. While we were the only patrons at first, a good handful of people followed not too far behind us (good sign). The server asked us if we wanted complimentary Miso Soup (bonus!) and from there we began perusing the menu... It's quite extensive on the sushi front. I love sushi but I was in the mood for something noodle-y. But let me reiterate: There are a lot of options for sushi! After some deliberation I went with the Hokkaido Ramen with Pork and a California Roll. Meegan got a combination of Sweet potato roll, Kappa Maki and and an avocado hand roll... Her quick review: "This is the BEST Sweet potato roll I've ever had"... (that's saying something people!) My ramen was delish. The perfect mixture of Ramen, broth and Pork. My sushi was pretty good (though I don't think you can mess up a California roll even if you tried)...I needed more wasabi but I think Nova Scotians are afraid of wasabi so it was probably the right amount for your average Joe. Everything is comparably priced (Our bill came to $33), the staff very friendly and in the end I got my noodle fix. All was good in my world.

Came in here on a cold rainy day in the mood for something to warm me up. The ambience is nice and the owner/manager is very friendly. I had the Hokkaido ramen, which was delicious and I highly recommend it. It had tasty and decently portioned slices of pork in a spicy broth. I just wish it was on the lunch specials menu! I'll definitely come here again when I have the chance.

East Coast Dumpling House is one of those diamonds in the suburban rough, and their namesake specialty is what put them up near the top of my hit list. My wife and I stopped in for a weekend lunch while running errands in the area, and although the restaurant was empty when we showed up, a few more tables showed up and quickly filled up the small space. Being our first time here, we went all-in on the dumplings - pan-fried pork with bok choy, and steamed xiao long bao. I was really happy to see soup dumplings on the menu as they're a rarity, even in bigger markets than Halifax. We tacked on an order of edamame to ostensibly have a proper vegetable with our meal. The salty beans came out quickly, and we picked away at them as we chatted and eagerly waited for our dumplings. Being first in line to order meant that we didn't have to wait long though. The pan-fried pork dumplings came with a lovely lattice on them, which really amped up the crispness of the dumplings, while they still maintained soft, pliable wrappers on their other side. The pork inside was well-seasoned, tender and moist, and although not soup dumplings, there were some squirts of juice as we bit into them! We didn't have Chinese spoons to cradle the xiao long bao as you go through the process of eating them (nibble the top to let them cool down, slurp broth through said hole, then devour), but we made do with small dipping bowls. The broth was meaty and savoury, with a viscous mouthfeel, and each dumpling was a delight. A return visit saw us coming by on a Friday evening, with a couple tables already occupied and takeout orders steadily coming and going. The food took a little longer this time, but was well worth the wait. They were out of udon noodles, so we went with the Singapore noodles. The tender egg noodles had a heavy dose of curry powder and a hint of sweetness, and the added chicken was tender and moist, with a touch of colour from the wok. We couldn't not get some dumplings, and our order of xiao long bao were just as good the second time around. We also tacked on an order of chicken bao to round out our meal. The bao had a non-traditional feel (or one I'm not familiar with, which is just as likely) with the bao bun having been fried, and shredded lettuce coming in it as well. Pickled cucumber and julienned carrot were more typical, and some hoisin sauce added a layer of sweet and savoury. East Coast Dumpling House has standard Chinese-Canadian fare, but their standout dishes are the ones that are their namesakes and other authentic dishes, and it's those that make ECDH worth the trip to Cole Harbour.

Gangnam Korean BBQ caught my eye as a place that would have something different - and more flavour - to offer. Their menu has a broad selection of options, with a couple dozen apps, as well as several each of rice and noodle dishes, soups, hot pot and of course, their namesake Korean BBQ. I was looking for something that wouldn't splatter my work clothes in some sort of sauce, so I went with the tofu bibimbap. It was a great mixture of crisp, pickled veg, a rich fried egg with crispy edges and a runny yolk, and soft, lightly fried tofu. A side of gochujang let me spice it up to my own taste. The bibimbap came with bonus sides of miso soup, kimchi and danmuji (yellow, pickled daikon). All added their own flavours and textures to the meal - the warm, savoury soup, the funky snap of the kimchi, and I really enjoyed the danmuji. In addition to its vibrant yellow, the pickling mellowed out the earthy funk of the daikon but each bite still had a great crunch and light tartness that helped cut through the richer parts of my meal. All told, it was a delicious meal and at an easy-on-the-wallet price of just $14 for a hearty, but healthy, meal. A return visit saw me coming by with my wife for a weekend lunch. She went for a couple of their many delicious-sounding apps, the fried Brussels sprouts and yakitori, while I went for the jajangmyeon (black bean pork and noodles). My wife's dishes came out first, and impressively quickly. Deep fried Brussels sprouts are this generations beet and goat cheese salad in their ubiquity, but hey, it works! With just the right level of char, the crispy cruciferous vegetable was dressed in a teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds for extra flavour. The yakitori weren't quite what I expected, as the chunks of chicken were deep fried instead of the typical grilling, but I appreciated their crisp crust that the frying imparted. A bed of spinach and drizzle of sauces felt like an unnecessary deviation that would be better served by a smoky, charcoal grilling, but they weren't bad so much as a bit superfluous. After a short wait, and a few stolen bites of my wife's food, my hefty bowl of noodles was before me. The noodles had a similar look to ramen, minus the de rigeur crinkle and weren't as supple, and came with a veritable sea of black bean sauce. The deeply rich, savoury and sweet sauce doused every noodle and then some, with tender bites of pork, cabbage and onion fleshing out the dish. Our server said this was his favourite dish on the menu, and I can see why - it's a bit of a deep cut versus the more familiar dishes to us non-Koreans, but it checked a lot of delicious boxes! My times sampling Gangnam's food have been nothing but complete successes, and while I benefit from proximity to them, they're a destination-worthy place with wonderfully executed food at more than reasonable prices.
