So I've tried Dharma again and sad to say the quality has not gone uphill. The staff are lovely, but the food is the most bland sushi I've had. Don't get me wrong, there is a complete monopoly in Halifax. Sushi is way better in Vancouver and I blame a healthy amount of competition. I've spent $6 for 18 pieces of sushi that included Miso Soup in Vancouver and it was better than the best sushi Halifax has to offer. THAT being said, there are some 'go-to' spots in Halifax and I don't spend my time complaining about how it isn't Vancouver. I stopped being one of those guys lol. Dharma Sushi just looks like Sushi but has no flavour or originality to it. And when I say no flavour, I mean it. It was tasteless. There's better out there, and in the general area, so go elsewhere. read more

Overall delicious, quick, friendly, and clean. Clean may seem unrelated but in the times of COVID-19 that has become a big factor in my decisions. Plus their rice is out of this world! I also have begun working remotely and the staff here were very friendly and accepting of me remaining for a long "lunch" as I worked from the restaurant until their 2 pm-close. Highly recommend, as far as a food recommendation I highly suggest teh chicken teriyaki and if you come on a Tuesday - get the daily special. read more

Dharma Sushi has been on my radar for some time now, and with a scaling of both positive and negative feedback, I think this is the sort of thing one must try and take into their own hands. And this, I did. No negative feedback to report-- my sushi was adequate and did the the trick. I admit, there are a few favourite spots around town that I'll hit up before Dharma, but that's not to say this spot doesn't have its charm. Small and intimate, the resto is contained amongst the Argyle Street bustle, which is a bumping spot for summer months. I'm not a sushi connoisseur by any means, so when I do go for the cuisine, I generally enjoy my miso salads, and the-- perhaps-- less adventurous bouts of shrimp, salmon and veggies. That being said, I was pleased to discover that Dharma will be adding on a new vegetarian menu to their offerings, which is to be coming sometime in the near future. Sounds like a good idea, as I think sushi could certainly appeal to all the veggie folks, had it more option. Overall, I'd like to come back to Dharma and give it another go. I think they have sushi to satisfy, but perhaps a little something missing to make it stand out. The service was good, and hold up-- I'll be back. read more

Remember in the movie "Once a time in mexico" where Johnny Depps character tries a pork dish every where he goes and kills the cook of the best one? I kind of do this without the killing part with Katsu-don. If I were Depp's character the chefs at Dharma would have been laid to rest. They make the BEST katsu-don in the HRM in my opinion. They make a really good soba noodle soup as well! I've never had a bad dining experience here. The staff are very friendly and accommodating to individual needs. Seating is not very comfortable, that's is my only complaint, but not enough to loose a star in my review. We always make the comment: "I haven't had Japanese food this good since I was in Japan" and it's so true. They are authentic. read more

My husband and I came in for lunch yesterday and were happily surprised with the deliciousness of the food. Dylan got the ramen and I got the veggie sushi lunch special and both were ah-mazing. Honestly, it was the best sushi I've had in the city. The lunch special came with a salad and miso soup, both of which were delicious (the corn in the salad was so sweet! Mmm). The miso is the best I've ever had - I may honestly go back just to get their miso because daaaaang. It was packed with flavour - so earthy, so comforting! For my sushi I had the avocado sushi and the cucumber sushi. The rice was cooked PERFECTLY and the avocado was so smooth - ripened to perfection. The cucumber was really good too, but I can't stop thinking about the avocado sushi. Dylan had nothing but compliments for his ramen as well. I tried the broth and it was so flavourful, I can't wait to go back and try it for myself! Shamefully, I have to admit that we came in about thirty minutes before they closed to prep for dinner. I hadn't realized it before we sat down, otherwise I wouldn't have gone in. But the staff didn't mind at all and were happy to have us despite our late appearances. They had our orders to us so quickly (I didn't time it, but I'd say within ten minutes at the most) and because Dylan and I are fast eaters anyway, we were out before they closed. I've always been a fan of Dharma and last night didn't disappoint. It offers authentic Japanese cuisine and has been serving up sushi in downtown Halifax for over 20 years, a sure sign that they're doing something right. A friend and myself went downtown for dinner with no particular restaurant in mind. Thought we'd go for a stroll and figure it out on the go. A beautiful Friday evening, we started our search on bustling Argyle Street hoping to snag a spot on a patio. Dharma's patio only has three tables, so we were lucky to get table outside. In fact, the place was almost empty, but I think that was due to the fact that their kitchen closed at 9:00 p.m. and we got there at 8:35 p.m. We almost jumped ship, as I don't like to feel rushed/I worked at a restaurant in my university days and remembered feeling annoyed by that last lingering table. The waitress assured us we had time to have dinner before they closed up. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We ordered aghedashi tofu and vegetarian dumplings for apps and then split a bunch of rolls. All were excellent, but the Dragon roll -shrimp tempura and eel wrapped in salmon and avocado and fish roe was the winner. It was outstanding. Our waitress was sweet and at one point another server or the chef, I'm not sure, came out and gave us these delicious rice balls in the shape of hearts on the house, so cute! They packed up what we couldn't finish, which was devoured shortly later when we met up with some friends who were coming back from Beer Feast. I do feel like we were slightly rushed out in the end. Our server asked us how we'd like to pay our bills before we were finished eating, a big no no in my books. That being said, the meal, service and atmosphere were great. I told a colleague about my upcoming weekend trip to Halifax so the next day she brought a copy of the Halifax Restaurant Guide for me. Not going to lie, I was so excited for my trip that I may have reviewed the guide right after work at a nearby Starbucks. My mum prefers Japanese over anything else so I looked for an authentic Japanese restaurant in Halifax that we could go to for lunch on Saturday. Dharma 's description said that it was Japanese run, which is always a good thing for me. The name though, made me think that it was Indian ... The front of the restaurant has 'Daruma' in Japanese (these guys http://japan.mrdonn.org/daruma2.gif) so I'm not sure why it's 'Dharma.' Anyway, moving on ... Service was a-ok. Our poor server; she was alone and it was quite crowded. That being said, she was as attentive as possible. The food was a-ok as well. I ordered the Lobster Roll; it needed something more because I found it to taste bland. I also ordered the Natto Roll, which was fine. Pricing was quite reasonable. There are few things better than eating some well prepared and tasty sushi in an authentic (or authentic feeling) sushi bar. Of course that was my expectation of what would be ahead of me during my first visit to Dharma Sushi, but unfortunately that's not the experience I left with. I'm not a HUGE sushi buff, but I know a thing or two about filling and rolling my own sushi from an endeavour into culinary culture a few years ago. With that said, even someone with zero knowledge on the subject could deduce that Maki (rolls of sushi) should stay rolled until they are eaten. My nori was flaking and kept causing the rest of the ingredients to fall out all over my plate. The Sashimi wasn't mush better, kind of chewy and a little too warm (it's just unsettling when your raw fish tastes warm). The specials, which include deals on large tray sized orders are pretty well priced, and a much better deal than eating in the restaurant, either way you wont get the authentic Japanese sushi-bar feel that I expected. Hot Hint: Don't show up on a Sunday or Holiday (like I did the first time I tried to visit) because they are closed. read more

I'm lazy in general, so making the effort to write a review is a task I don't often challenge myself to engage upon. How's that for a pretentious intro sentence? Simply put, Dharma Sushi has the best, freshest and most melt-in-your-mouth sushi in HRM. Their menu may not be the largest in town, but it's my opinion that they limit their options in order to knock out such great product each and every time I visit. The service is also fantastic, they are always slammed at lunch time, but their staff are friendly and happy to accommodate your requests to substitute things within the lunch specials (within reason of course). The price range is great - particularly with the lunch specials. While some might say that the small size of the restaurant is a downside, I see it as an intimate environment where they care more about their food then putting on airs with their design. It's not a place where I would take my husband for a romantic meal with candlelight and...I know know...violins or stuff, but we hate that jazz anyway. When I leave the suburbs I want to be fed right, Dharma never fails me. read more

I had seen this place on Google maps a week ago and when I walked to the street to find it, it wasn't exactly where i had thought it was, so I didn't see it that day, and ended up eating elsewhere. Today for lunch I was looking at the map again and discovered my mistake, so tried it after all. (cool sunny Wednesday). Ten tables inside, with a casual but nice atmosphere. Dark orange walls with reasonable Japanese decor and artwork (not all cheap stuff like you see in lots of restaurants). The place was about half full when I sat at a two-seater and was greeted immediately. In the half hour that I stayed, all the tables filled up with business people, but no one seemed to be waiting around for a table, so that was perfect for the restaurant i guess. I ordered the 9 piece vegetable tempura (eggplant, peppers, yam) which was good and the yam tempura roll which was good and reasonably-sized (where the pieces aren't too big or too small). My bill came to $14 something. Service was friendly and speed or order was great. Although I wouldn't say there's anything unique about this place, I'd definitely go back and it just felt a little better than average to me. read more

Dharma is in a bit of a tsukemono*. While it used to have a prime location on Argyle Street with little competition from the more casual I Love Sushi (which I have admittedly never been to so who am I to count it out...), the playing field is getting a little crowded thanks to my personal favourite, Fujiyama. That's not to say that Dharma isn't worth a visit, it's just I think they might have to start trying a little harder if they want to stay in the game. On the plus side, Dharma is one of the more calming sushi restaurants in the city. Where others attempt to be particularly trendy and strive for hot spot status, Dharma really focuses on being tranquil, making it ideal for big picture conversations or just a quiet solo dinner. The streetside patio option is pretty awesome, the service is polite and attentive, and I've never had any issues with the rolls themselves. Still, the menu just doesn't have some of the exciting options that you'll find elsewhere and the prices are inflated compared to some of the specials you can take advantage of at its neighbours. Nothing makes up mind faster about where to go for lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays than the Tuesday/Thursday special at Dharma Sushi. The "soo-shh" as my friends and I call it is some of the best in the city for a great price. The irony is that when I order the "special" (4 pieces of vegetable tempura, a small salad, 6 pieces of California roll and chicken teriyaki), I like to personalize it so it's not like I'm ordering the special at all. The Dharma kitchen happily accommodates substitutions. at $1 a piece. My customizations include subbing beef teriyaki for chicken and spicy salmon roll made inside out with tempura bits for the California roll. Regular spicy salmon at Dharma usually has the fish, spicy sauce and rice wrapped in seaweed so that is quite a substitution in my books. In ten years of going here, I have maybe had one or two bad experiences where the fish didn't seem superfresh. However, for the most part, the fish is fresh and high quality. Yes, the space is a bit spartan. It's a long, narrow space with a minimalist, Ikea décor. I'm not sure that I would want to eat dinner here but with its convenient location on Argyle, it's an ideal lunch spot It can be busy at lunch so I usually try to arrive early. If you're planning on being after 12:15 and you're eating with friends, it's wise to call to make a reservation. If you're dining solo, you can usually find a seat at the sushi bar without a problem. The service is friendly and reasonably quick. For $11 and change, you get a large plate of tasty "soo-ssh" that'll keep you feeling full all afternoon long. read more

Unfortunately, my dinner from Dharma has probably been the most disappointing sushi experience in Halifax thus far. I'm a total sushi beginner, so my review should be taken with a grain of salt. First of all, the sushi pizza - I'm on a bit of a mission to try them all over Halifax, and this one was by far the worst. It was just kind of...measly. The rice cake bottom was thin and sort of flimsy, and there was very little fish on top. Other places, there is so much fish that you need to eat some of it with chopsticks first before digging into the actual "pizza" part. There was also very little, if any, spicy mayo. And I love spicy mayo. The yam tempura roll was better, but still not the best I've had in Halifax. I'll return to Dharma another time to try out some more of the rolls, but it won't be at the top of my list on nights when I just want to get some takeout sushi pizza and go to town. read more

The atmosphere was exactly like a small sushi bar back in Tokyo. THE ONLY reason I give Dharma Sushi 4/5 rather than 5/5 is because the server was not very attentive and forgot our miso soup-- then tried to charge us for it afterwards. It's come to my attention that I'm a bit of a sushi whore. It's cool. I can live with that. Had a real tasty lunch here on the patio with a co-worker. Due to some allergies, it's not always easy for me to eat a lunch special as is on the menu. Our server made some excellent suggestions to skirt that situation and I ended up with an excellent lunch. The meal started off with a salad and miso soup. My undying devotion and love of all things iceberg lettuce aside, this was seriously one of the best house salad's I've ever had. The dressing was amazing. Super fresh veggies. Delicious. Miso soup was pretty tasty as well. The Sushi Lunch (which is what I ordered) came with 4pcs of nigiri and 12 pieces of assorted rolls. (3 spicy tuna, 3 spicy salmon are the norm and usually a California roll, i rocked a spicy avacado roll instead of the Cali roll) and the previously mentioned soup and salad. I was really impressed after heading into Dharma Sushi last night on a bit of a whim. We had planned to head to the Wooden Monkey after I finished my first day training at a new job, but sadly, they were closed. We decided to wander down Argyle and decided upon Dharma. Service was exceptional! We received our edamame and mixed vegetable tempura promptly after ordering and our combo plate also arrived in a timely fashion. I had hoped that the spicy salmon and eel rolls would be inside out, but it didn't effect my overall enjoyment. Eel was a little salty. Spider rolls were an interesting touch (soft shell crab, cucumber, red caviar and spicy sauce) -surprisingly crunchy! I would definitely head back here! I hate to give a two-star review, I really do. I came here recently and the service was incredibly, incredibly slow. It took probably twenty minutes for our orders to be taken, then some of us got appetizers, and then eventually, we all got our dinners. The sushi was adequate. I'd give this place a three based on food alone. But the poor service, sadly didn't end with the slow ordering and the slow food arrival. We were finished our lunches for over 20 minutes and had to ask for our bills. Half the plates (from our group of 6) were still on the table when we left. It nearly made us late for our next activity. All in all, a lunch took us an an hour and 45 minutes to finish - without us taking our time at all. It's not that the staff that was on were doing a poor job, but they were clearly understaffed. The restaurant was half-full and there were only three people on that I could see. There was only one waitress for the entire place. I'll give Dharma another try at some point and hope that the service issue was just a glitch. read more

Dharma sushi... Oh you. Well, you get a star for being open on Sunday. I was visiting friends in Halifax and was hoping to try out Doraku, however it was closed (so was Minato just across the street) and I was practically gnawing my arm off from hunger... But my sushi craving was too strong to accept some other food type and the same went for the rest of the gang. So we wandered the streets in search of a sushi source. We walked and walked and then we came across Dharma and so we entered. So I suppose I will give you another star for decor... You are a lovely place to sit in, I like your painting of yourself hung up on your wall (you are so vain). But like a lot of people that rely on their looks, you are ever so slow. My friends and I ordered a plate of rolls each (to share) and those rolls took over an hour to get to us. Perhaps you were understaffed, but all I know is that you certainly weren't that busy. You lose a star or two for that. The presentation was nice, however, and the sushi tasted so good. The problem was it took us an hour to get food that we ate in about 5 minutes (we was HUNGRY). We didn't leave filled either so we ended up stopping at the Carleton after that. You're prices were decent though so I will give you another chance someday... Maybe not on a Sunday. read more

Although I haven't eaten in, I really like the sushi here. Large portions and great options on the menu make it a good spot for me. Also the wait time for take out is never long and the staff is super friendly. The only down is the hours. I know a lot of business have to do separate lunch an supper hours but I sure wish they didn't. Makes getting sushi before work difficult. I have been to Dharma Sushi several times and each time have been satisfied with the service and the quality of food. The sushi is well made and consistently good quality. Although not amazingly special, you will always be satisfied with the sushi created by the chef. The ginger salad dressing is one of the best in the city! My wife orders the seafood salad and it is always fresh. Highly recommended. Tempura is crisp and very tasty. The oykudon is a big serving and very filling (great sauce). All in all, Dharma sushi is authentic and a great place to eat in Halifax for sushi and Japanese cuisine. read more

We hunted around and found that Halifax didn't seem to be a real big sushi town. Nevertheless, we had a hankering and tried out Dharma, which has a great location with a narrow space right on Argyle. The decor is pretty standard, and we sat at the smallish sushi bar. The service was friendly and attentive. We ordered several rolls and some nigiri sushi. The presentation was just okay, even a little sloppy. The food all tasted really good though. I'm not sure why yam rolls seems to be part of combo special in the city, but they were pretty tasty. This is the best kept secret in Halifax. Been going here for over 20 years and the food is amazing. Can't get better bento boxes or any lunch specials anywhere else in Halifax or any place I have tried from Vancouver , and U.S. The tuesday and Thursday Special with taxes in $11.14 would cost you over $30.00 in the evening. I love sushi, I really do. I've made it a bit of a mini quest to try every sushi place in Halifax. There are quite a few. Dharma-Sushi is one of my favorite go to sushi restaurants I've found on said quest. I especially love a trip to Dharma for lunch. They offer the usual Japanese fare but also have a delicious selection of bento boxed lunches and daily specials. The prices are reasonable for a quick and filling sit down lunch. Tuesday and Thursday are my preferred days to visit for lunch. They offer a $9.95 bento of tempura, California roll, salad, chicken teriyaki and rice. They also carry my favorite Japanese soft drink, Calpico. A strange mixture of cherry and milk flavor only Japan could offer. I've found the service to be quick and friendly during every lunch hour I've visited. The sushi is fresh and delicious. Which is all I really desire. That, and BBQ eel. They have both. Nice little place in downtown Halifax. It's really nice to go to a sushi place that isn't AYCE. The service was super quick - we only had 50 minutes between meetings at the convention centre and we made it through a full dinner with time to spare. I had the Dharma Bento - way too much to eat for a very reasonable price. It even included a beautiful and tasty sashimi assortment. Having only a little time before a hockey game we decided to grab a quick bite at dharma. I had been once before and had vaguely remembered not loving it but thought I'd give another chance. I can't comment on the entire menu. What we did order was spicy shrimp roll, yam roll, spicy salmon and cali roll. First, for the money the rolls were too tiny. The presentation was okay and the order was quick. Our server was really nice and did take our order quickly when we mentioned we were in a rush. What really disappointed me was the overall quality and taste. First, the rice had a very gluey texture. I love quality rice but this was just terrible. Also, it was quite warm. I guess you could say it was fresh? In my spicy salmon roll there was too much mayo for my taste. My shrimp roll was a bit better. Overall the warm gluey rice and overload on mayo really turned me off. I didn't even finish my meal it was so off putting. I'm trying to give a fair review but will not be going back. read more

Okay, Now, I have to say that I have been looking for a sushi restaurant to replace my old hangouts in Vancouver, BC since moving to the Halifax area. If you have been to Vancouver, you know there is a sushi bar just about everywhere. As a result, sushi can be inexpensive, but good. We took a chance and went to Dharma as it was on Google Maps. All I can say is, "I miss my old haunts in Vancouver!!!!" We ordered their Sunomono on a whim and it was gross! Not the noodle kind that I am familiar with. Their sushi is grossly over-priced. In Vancouver, I could get (for example: 2 tuna, 2 salmon and 2 ebi sushi, plus a dynamite roll for $8.50) At Dharma, 2 tuna cost $6.00 and they were tiny! The Dharma California roll and lobster roll were bland as heck and not worth having. How about a little Japanese mayonnaise, please? Put more cucumber and even more avocado in the dynamite roll to make it a dynamite size... Our bill came to over $70 for two and we ordered half of what we would have ordered in Vancouver. Oh, the service was slow - it took over 45 minutes to get our order and there were only 3 tables filled in the place. We won't be back... Sorry. We'll go back to Genji in Dartmouth - better found and more choice for less... read more

As a Japanese, I sometimes miss the taste of my homeland that isn't sushi. One major problem with Halifax is that there are very few Japanese restaurants that offer genuine Japanese dish that is not Sushi, Udon, Tempura, or Una-gi don (Teriyaki doesn't count, because grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce poured on IS NOT EVEN REMOTELY teriyaki. Real teriyaki is marinated or grilled while the sauce is applied. It's more involving dish.) Some of them can't even spell the names right, for god's sake. So when I found out that Dharma has Silver Cod and Chawanmushi, I simply jumped in joy. Silver Cod is definitely my favorite dish, and I can't find it at any other Japanese restaurants so far. A waitress told me some people actually go there for that particular dish, and I can understand why. It's a harmony of sweetness and zest coming from mirin and miso based marinade (if I'm right.) Yes, there is a possibility that you could die of old age while waiting for your dish. Yes, the price is a little steep. But I'm willing to ignore all that for the simple fact that they cared enough to include some things that are different from others and still genuinely Japanese and not, let's say, Sushi Pizza or Nuclear Dynamite Fujiyama Roll. read more

If you're going to try them out, I would suggest coming here during supper time instead of lunch, as I prefer the dinner menu options. Dharma was the first place in Halifax that I ate sushi, more than 12 years ago. I can still remember how mind-blowing the bbq'd eel was. I went on Monday for the first time since, and had a solo lunch. It is a calm restaurant (mostly -- there was a baby two tables away, so not entirely), though it was busy. The service was fast and friendly, and my Gold mixed sushi was good, fresh, and tasty, particularly the roll. I would've liked at least a cursory explanation of what was on the platter (it wasn't on the menu and the waitress wasn't there long enough to ask). I have sushi often, but I need a reminder on some of the fish, especially since a lot of the white fish looks similar. And the roll was super tasty, but I don't know what it was. Went with 3 others for lunch waited 45 minutes for food ... more than 1 hour from arrival until food came to table and then only some for one. Service extremely poor and very slow. Only 30 minutes in to the wait and after complaining did we get excuse and apology ... the same line was then given to other customers ... that there was only one sushi chef on line and and another large group having arrived without reservation. Have eaten at various sushi eateries in Halifax with comparable taste but much better service. Found that whilst taste was ok poor service will dictate my lack of return. read more
