No.1 son and I had an afternoon run ashore in Halifax mid-August and decided to do some carbo-lading before getting stuck into the beer. I've been to the Bedford Highway outlet several times, and thought it time to give the city centre one a try. It's frequently rated as among the top sushi joints in town and having visited, I can see why. Built below pavement level on Queen Street, just off Spring Garden, it's a high, bright, airy place. Open and booth seating, a few spots by the window and a row of chairs at the sushi bar itself. We went maki, with spicy tuna, unagi and the house butterfish rolls. They are generously sized, well built and with palpable freshness. Quite delicious and fully deserving of its high reputation. Topped off with a pint of Sapporo each, the bill was not at all bad, especially given the central location. Highly recommended and worthy of a revisit sooner rather than later. read more

Having sushi at a restaurant for the first time in 7 or 8 months was pretty sublime! We were happily greeted with a hand washing area, and directed by masked staff to a booth with dividers. We had a great evening chowing down on fresh appetizers, miso soup & mixed sushi (not pictured), as well as black sesame ice cream. The tuna was so fresh!! We loved the red dragon roll and sushi mix. My boss wanted to take me out for a thank-you, holiday, catch-up type of dinner. He told me to pick the restaurant. Well, I couldn't pick, he suggested sushi and we ended up here! I would have totally suggested sushi but it's one of those things that people either love or don't. Honestly, I wouldn't have suggested Sushi Nami, but I'm glad he did because it makes a nice change from my usual joint. The restaurant is classy/casual with a very cool atmosphere; it's clean and opening. Service is always fairy fast. We both ordered maki dinners; he got the deluxe and I got the assorted. They both came with a house salad (which is very good) and miso soup to start. Mine had 14 pieces; 3 California, 3 tuna, 3 spicy salmon and 5 chicken teriyaki rolls. I liked it all, but the chicken teriyaki rolls I found rather dry and lacking in flavour. I've had the kamikaze roll other times I've been there and it's one of my all time favourites. I dream of "firecracker dream"! It is an inside out roll with avocado, cucumber, tempura bits and a little spicy mayo. Their grilled vegetable maki, dynamite maki, the vegetable dragon roll, Philadelphia roll,the sweet potato.....*I drool as I type this........ Whenever we have a deep, dark craving for sushi, this is the place we visit. Their rolls have a great balance of softness and crunch and each plateful arrives with artistic precision. When you arrive you are cheerfully greeted by the Itamae's and seated quickly. For those people who enjoy a late night snack, I recommend Tsunami hour(starts at 9:30 on weekdays), you can get many apps and regular maki's for a great price . The staff are always polite and ready to help, I have not had bad service ever! Great Job guys :-) Now to balance the yin and yang. I shall be brutally honest about the wait time for the food. Some nights the food gets a seat on the concord to our table but there are times where we have waited a while for our food to arrive. The music playing in the background can also be up for review, maybe they should do a check of what other popular spots in town are playing to keep the ambiance up. This was my first sushi experience in Halifax. Through mega reservation (as I'm not a huge fishy person) we wandered up to the Dresdon Row location and got our chopstick on. I'm not even remotely educated on sushi, even a year later. I'm not even going to pretend I know what I'm talking about. Maki? No clue. Unagi? Tobbiko? Double no clue. But I can say that I thoroughly enjoy eating it. I haven't progressed into the super fishy stage yet. I have nibbled on a few of my boyfriend's rolls and found them quite tasty. It really isn't an authentic sushi experience such as Hamachi, Dharma, or Fujiyama but it is a delish one. It's perfect for someone like me who doesn't want to dive in head first. It is a pretty large spot with seating by the chefs as well as more seating up top. It's nice and bright and always busy. We always start with the edamame. Of which I've been hooked on ever since. Cool thing about it is that it's super high in protein and low in fat. My classic go-to selections are always the firecracker and vegetable dragon. The firecracker is as the name implies, the bomb. Avocado and spicy mayo rock this roll. My boyfriend always gets what he calls the "Big Mac" of sushi: The Kamikaze. Salmon, tuna, snapper, avocado, cream cheese, and jalapeno make for a fabulous combo of flavors. I find it a wee bit cheaper than Hamachi and somehow seem to deem this our regular sushi place. I just love the firecracker to the moon and back. If you're looking to go on an evening close to the weekend, make sure you allow plenty of time. I think this will be one of my new fav. places for sushi. If you go between 3-5 or 9:30-close they have a 'Tsu-Nami' special where the prices are cheaper. It actually makes a lot of the food cheaper than most other sushi places! Not to mention, the rolls are a bit larger than most places so you definitely get your money worth! Usually I can eat 3 (sometimes 4) rolls before I'm full but at this place I only need 2. It's worth mentioning that YOU should be aware of the time for Tsu-Nami hour because sometimes the waitresses forget. Also, if you arrive even 5 mins early you're not likely to get the Tsu-Nami menu. After I was seated, a couple came in (it was about 3:02 or something. I remember checking my phone.) and they had to ask for the Tsu-Nami menu. Service is pretty good. Although last time I went the waitress took forever to come check on us. This normally isn't a bad thing but I was waiting to ask about a part of my order she forgot. She eventually got around to it and apologized saying they were busy...but there was only about 2-3 other tables at the time. Maybe it's just because I'm a waitress too, but I found this odd since I wouldn't consider that busy. Anyway, she was really nice about it and even apologized again when we left. The workers at the sushi bar often say hello when you arrive as well which I found was a nice touch. The place is very spacious and clean. Food is presented nicely. Service is good. Prices are great. Friday afternoon on a blissful early spring day took me and a couple of friends into Sushi Nami for lunch. I was coveting a bento box, a mixture of tasty things at a price that doesn't break the bank. We waited at the door for about 10 minutes; I'm assuming because the lunch rush had just cleared out and things very still pretty hectic. When we were seated it took another 10 minutes to get water dropped off and a total of 15-20 minutes before we placed our orders. Their bento box selection is not vegetarian friendly, but the server was able to get the kitchen to do some simple substitutions for us, so it all worked out. The food came in pretty good time and looked marvelous. It was colorful and fresh, and paired with warm Sake made for a truly lovely lunch. Our server didn't really come back until the end of the meal, but she was kind enough and we were immersed in conversation so it wasn't a huge deal. The bills were taking quite awhile to arrive so we decided to suit up for the outdoors, and head to the counter. We paid up and hit the streets, back into the brisk sunny day that has been par for the course this week. The long waiting times and inattentive service took away from what was an otherwise great experience. I'm not griping because I had a lovely lunch, but if Sushi Nami can jazz this end of their business up, they'll be doing better in my books. read more

But if you are from outside of Halifax or even Nova Scotia, it is important for you to know a few things about my experience with Sushi and the general quality of Sushi in Halifax as well. First off, I adore Sushi! And I am a picky Sushi customer. I have eaten at plenty of great Sushi restaurants in Vancouver, California and a few other spots as well. So that's my experience with Sushi. Here's my challenging dilemma with Sushi in Halifax. In general it is not that good. The portion sizes are small, the prices are high and the service is fair. Can I expect anything less from a food that is not native to Canadian cuisine? Well the short answer is yes. If Vancouver can make it cheaper with a higher quality then so can Halifax. Sushi Nami would rank as a three star in any major city that has a normal amount of competition. However there are only a handful of Sushi restaurants in Halifax and it almost feels like a conspiracy that they all have high prices for small portions. Sushi Nami, however, is fair with their prices and have a wide selection of Sushi as well as other dishes for people to enjoy. Their location is quite central in downtown Halifax. Just off of Spring Garden Road, on Dresden Row, they are very easy to get to and seating wait time is normally only a minute or two. I always have a great time when I go there. The Waitress's are very nice, however, tend to be on the "rookie" side of things experience wise. So from time-to-time you will definitely hear a plate break into a million peaces. My advice; just yell Opa! I know that's Greek but why not? So the food is great when compared to the other Sushi restaurants in Halifax. However do not expect the Sushi to blow your mind if you are used to Vancouver, California or any other state's or provinces wide variety of Sushi restaurant's. But if you do need a Sushi fix, like I do from time-to-time, I highly recommend Sushi Nami. read more

A quick dip into sushi realms without spending a fortune. Sushi Nami offers an array all fans of the cuisine would expect, but somehow this little resto experience borders mediocre. Not a huge sushi goer myself, I do tag along with a few addicts with opinions to enjoy spaced out sessions. And while the setting and service was more than apt, my recent selection at Sushi Nami warranted measly portions and less than admirable craftsmanship. The quaint interiors made for a lovely sit down evening, and an equally lovely server furthered the fact that we were well looked after. The place seemed fairly busy, and to have attentive, friendly service is always something I take into consideration. Food-wise, the appetizers were a delight. I ordered the Yaki-Nasu (Eggplant topped with miso sauce), and friends reported solidity of the shrimp + lobster dishes and spring rolls. It was the main dishes that were less than exquisite--- my vegetarian dragon roll appeared a bit make-shift in construction. Still tasty and worthy of the $8.95 price tag, the presentation and craftsmanship here wasn't the best. Although I'm going to be optimistic and say I hit an off day at Sushi-Nami. Great prices, superior service and atmospheric affect, next time could take this spot from good to great. read more

So good! Ate in restaurant once, ordered to-go as well, and my rolls were super fresh both times. Spicy tuna definitely wasn't spicy whatsoever, but it was so good I didn't care. Great miso soup, all sushi I've tried has been A+, and their sushi pizza is pretty interesting and delicious as well. Very nice new interior, accessible wheelchair lift should you need it, our waiter was kind, attentive and hospitable :) Will definitely be back. read more

There's no denying that Sushi Nami Royale does a lot of things right. It's a beautiful restaurant that feels comfortable for all kinds of occasions - dates, catch-ups with friends, a night out with a group - and the location can't be beat. The presentation is beautiful, the menu is varied, and the service functions well enough. Where Sushi Nami stumbles a bit, is in the food itself. It's very creative, fusion-y sushi that's lovely to read about on the menu and look at on the plate, but I just never find it delivers on its own hype once it hits the tastebuds. I never find the flavours or freshness really shine like they should given what you're paying. That said, for those who love trying different sushi combinations and off-the-wall creations, Sushi Nami is a solid bet for finding a spread with some talk value. read more

Visited with some friends at the Dresden location a couple of months ago. It was a fairly quiet day when we arrived, giving a nice relaxing sit-down (for the most part). I ordered the Tako Karaage to start, along with the house roll. For being a nicer sit-down restaurant it naturally took some time for the meal to arrive; but when it did, was it ever good! Prepared just right, flavorful and well presented, the menu surpassed my expectations by a longshot. Be warned, it's not the kind of place I'd take kids, if only because of the slightly more formal (not casual, not full formal) atmosphere. read more

Hmmm, it seems that rather than apologizing for a sub-par dish that perhaps is not the norm for the restaurant, Sushi Nami's chef would rather try to convince me in his comment on my review that what I ate was indeed delicious. It was not. Agadashi tofu does taste better when soft, as I have experienced in the past, but how about when nearly liquid? A spoon would have served me better than chopsticks. The 'deep fried' coating was a pale congealing white, with no evidence that it had been fried any time that day. And last but not least, the bonito flakes overwhelmed the tofu. There must have been at least a few tablespoons worth of that 'garnish' in the dish. It was just sloppy. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, but we have to be mature enough to own up to them when it happens. read more

Just an addendum to the awesomeness of Sushi Nami. We recently descended on them with a group of 14 for a birthday party. When I realized I had miscounted and had only reserved for 12, they quickly scooped up another table and added it to ours, even though it was a Friday night and the place was busy. The service was amazing. I mean, it was pretty much the same pace as when I'm there with two people. Everyone's food came out within minutes of each other. Everyone had drink orders promptly refilled. Everyone had big smiles on their faces as they nommed sushi - especially the birthday boy! Add to that, they said 'no problem!' when we wanted the birthday boy's cheque split between 13 of us. They also brought him out a free dessert (which we passed around the entire table, since we had dessert waiting for us at our next destination.) I heartily recommend the tempura banana with sesame ice cream. Great job, Sushi Nami! And thanks for a night to remember! read more

A friend of mine recommended I join her here for an after-work winddown,saying that the sushi was "the best" (grant it, she's not exactly a sushi affectionado). I took her up on the offer, and suffice to say, I wasn't blown away by the quality of service or the meal quality at Sushi Nami. As a profound sushi addict (living in Vancouver for a year seems to have that effect on a person), I found that the quality here was sub-par compared to other sushi restaurants. The ingredients don't seem as fresh as what you might find elsewhere (the avacados in particular tasted really "off"). Also, there was little attention to detail in the preparation and presentation of the meal (which may seem a bit trivial to criticize, but when you've had well-presented maki in the past, you come to expect it). The rolls were literally falling apart, which made them difficult to eat, and unappealing to the eye. The overall taste wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't the greatest. Sushi Nami Royale's biggest pitfall is it's service. We were seated for over half an hour before a server came with menus and offered us beverages, then it was another 20 minutes before the food arrived- we were parched and starving just waiting! Preparing a basic maki shouldn't take THAT long. The waitress never came to see how we were enjoying our meal or anything. Bottom line: this place is alright if you're just looking for everday sushi, but for the best experience, you'd be best to try elsewhere read more

Nice place, the sushi is delicious and prices at about the same price as the other dozen or so sushi houses downtown. But nothing really draws me here. The service was ok, but not great. The decor is modern and clean, but lacks the charm of some of the competition. A nice touch for the rice bowls is they come in a hot (very hot) cast iron bowl. Though the traditional way is to crack a raw egg over the rice and let the rice cook it, they opted for the western way of putting a already cooked egg on top. read more

If I'm ever caught in a tsunami, please let it be a tsunami of sushi. Sushi Nami Royale provides one of the more restaurant-like environments in Halifax for enjoying sushi. While still informal, it's nowhere near as casual as some of Halifax's other sushi joints. The atmosphere is decidedly more sophisticated than some of the wooden lunch counter models around town. The restaurant is also open later than most sushi places making it a perfect place to satisfy late evening sushi cravings. Sushi Nami has a spectacular sushi menu that includes a wide variety of nigiri, sashimi and exotic roll choices. My favourite is the Tropicana roll, a combination of deep fried coconut, mango, shrimp tempura, spicy chopped scallop with green onion, crab, and cucumber. All dishes are impeccably plated, earning extra points for presentation. Service can sometimes be a bit spotty. Last time I ate there, I had a new waitress who was aggressively helpful, trying to take our orders while we were waiting for a friend. The same waitress was overly eager to clear our table, but for the most part, the servers are friendly. Warranting a special mention is tsunami hour. Between 3-5 pm and 9:30 to 11:30pm from Monday to Saturday, you can get 20% off the menu prices of the Tsu-nami menu. This menu has a variety of appetizers, soup and salads, maki rolls, and stir-fry teriyaki bowls. It's happy hour for sushi lovers. If you are out with non-sushi eaters, fear not. The menu has a large number of alternatives including tempura and noodle dishes. Sushi lover or not, you're sure to enjoy a good meal here. read more

The food here is delicious and the atmosphere is a claustrophobe's dream; the restaurant is light and open with big windows. I don't eat seafood so I can't vouch for that, but the vegetable rolls (sweet potato maki and cucumber maki) I had were super tasty and filling. It's worth noting that the rolls are a bit bigger than some other places, so be careful if you're planning on going all out. The tonkatsu is tender and flavourful and the sauce is to die for. The service was quick and friendly. The best time to go is between 3 and 5 pm or after 9:30; at that time, you can order off the Tsu-Nami menu which has a number of menu items available for a discounted price. You may have to ask for the discount menu; our waitress thought it started at 3:30 until she checked the menu. There was something we found to be a bit odd; the waitress didn't clear the tables. A party left not long after we arrived and by the time we left, their glasses were still on the table. There weren't people waiting for tables so it wasn't a huge deal, but it was definitely strange. Overall, I really enjoyed it and I definitely plan on coming back. read more

I've eaten here a number of times, and the service is normally a bit slow, especially when it gets later in the evening and people start arriving for the late night sushi discount. All of the regular standards on the menu, so when I just feel like having some of my regular choices (spicy salmon, california roll) without getting adventurous, Sushi Nami is a safe bet. read more

In the past three weeks, I have been to Sushi Nami probably 3-4 times. It's my favourite sushi place so far... and I really love their Firecrackers dream. I don't eat seafood so I can't comment on their fish sushi but I can tell you it beats the rest when comparing other vegetable sushi around the city. They have three locations in the HRM - Dresden Row (downtown), Lacewood (Clayton Park) and Dartmouth Crossing, which is very convenient. I have nothing but praise for the Clayton Park location - the service is terrific, the food is divine and the atmosphere is spot on. The Dresden Row location follows suit but the service is a little more slack that what I would like. My co-worker and I went for lunch last week and an expected 45 minute lunch turned into an hour and a half. This is fine for a dinner with no plans afterwards, but at a downtown location with lots of businesses around and at lunch time, you think they would be a little more accommodating... and just so you're aware, there wasn't a huge crowd, perhaps only 5 tables? I finally made my way over to the Dartmouth Crossing location last night before catching Titanic in 3D - yup, it's still 3 1/2 hours ... sigh - and where the service was slack at the Dresden Row location, here it was great. The food came out in a timely manner and of good quality - as always - but man was the place cold. It wasn't only myself that felt the draft, it was our whole table. Not exactly sure where the frigid air was circulating from, but it was cold... At least now I know to wear a parka and mitts for my next visit. All in all, Sushi Nami is my favourite sushi restaurant in the HRM. I always go and look for new places but I always come back, just like the cat from the Harry S Miller song. read more

Stopped in here to pick up dinner after helping my friend move for the day. She doesn't dig sushi yet, so hence the takeout part. The greeter was friendly and helpful when I walked in and took my order pretty quick. But, then I waited... and waited. Table orders were definitely the priority, even though it wasn't that busy while I was waiting. So, my advice might be to call in a takeout order ahead and take your time heading there to pick it up. I found the prices to be pretty standard to other sushi places, if not a little bit more, which was fine due to the close proximity of this place to my friend's apartment. I had the spicy tuna roll, BC bbq salmon roll, sweet potato roll and miso soup. All of the food was pretty tasty and presented well, rolls were good quality and didn't fall apart. Definitely a good meal after a day of moving! I can't say anything about the dining experience here, but hopefully I'll get a chance to be by this place again in the future. read more

What a great sushi restaurant. I was there a couple of years ago and really wasn't that impressed. I went a couple of weeks back with a friend who raved about the place and he ordered some different sushi plates that he thought I would enjoy. My opinion has now changed. I love it. Tonight I returned with a few friends and everyone really enjoyed the sushi. The fusion special rolls are amazing. My 2 favorites are the Tropicana roll and and dragon roll with eel. The atmosphere is great and the Manager there Bobbi provides great service. We didn't have a reservation but she was able to seat us no problem. I've come here for lunch a few times, and dinner as well, and it never disappoints! Service is quick and I love the variation of traditional and unconventional sushi rolls. I'm a roll lover, not a full out sushi eater so I guess I can't vouch for the more hardcore items, but whatever I choose is freakin delicious! I don't go for the spicy rolls but I've heard they're quite good :) my favorite is definitely the green dragon, a tempura shrimp with crab smothered in yummy avocado. I have been eating at Sushi Nami for ten years now and I have never ever had a bad experience. I know in terms of Sushi Restaurants in Halifax they are seen as a chain and not as authentic as places like TAKO. However the quality is top notch, at this point I've eaten almost the entire menu and nothing has ever been sub par. The service is always fantastic and they go above and beyond for their customers. Going as far to make personal recommendations based on your tastes, offering to customize orders or substitutions for you with a smile and genuine conversation when they come to check on you in the middle of the meal and not just the "How's everything tasting so far?" Another thing about this restaurant specifically I love is it has something for everyone, the verity and selection on their menu is unrivaled. Not everyone loves sushi and sometimes you have to drag someone with you to lunch that isn't as stoked to eat sushi as you but they agree to go anyway. The options for bento boxes, ramen, soy sheets instead of nori and rice bowls really make this a great place to introduce that picky eater in your life to Japanese food. Also the atmosphere is great the newer Queen street location is beautiful and really tries to capture the Izakaya style in a weirdly maritime way. Overall really worth a visit even if you're loyal to your favorite little sushi restaurant. read more

Bleeping delicious vegetarian maki rolls. Order the vegetarian combo (cucumber, sweet potato and another type of veggie maki), 15 sushi rolls for a decent price. Free miso soup & salad (not sure of the vegan-friendliness of the soup, though). Great service, atmosphere & food. What more is there? read more
