    Tonkotsu ramen $15.95
    Stacy S.

I can't even tell you how happy we were to find a Japanese ramen place in Halifax! The reviews looked promising, so off we went! The only problem with this location is that there is no parking, unless you're lucky enough to find metered parking on the street. We ended up parking at the waterfront and walking to the restaurant. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the server and told to sit wherever we like. The restaurant is rather narrow but can seat quite a few people. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen for $15.95 and was pleasantly surprised. First of all, it tasted authentic! The broth was creamy and tasty. You can choose between straight or wavy noodles, and I selected the straight. The noodles tasted like they were handmade and not from a package. They were also quite generous with the noods. It was definitely a decent size bowl! Perhaps the star of the show, however, were the two thick pieces of chashu. They were delish! Hubby ordered extra noods, which were $3 more, and it was a lot of noods! He did mention that it was probably too much noodles for the amount of broth, whereas my bowl was more balanced since I didn't order extra noods. Nevertheless, we both left very satisfied. I appreciated the fact that they had red ginger on the table. I love that stuff and added it to my ramen. Service was fast and super friendly! I would definitely return here again.

I saw the high ratings, but overall, I was very disappointed. We ordered the tonkotsu ramen and dan dan noodles. The tonkotsu ramen had chashu that was extremely fatty--so fatty that it was inedible. The noodles also had a strong instant-noodle taste. I absolutely wouldn't recommend it.

The food was delicious and service was so friendly. We were just walking around and decided to stop by. The noodles were perfectly cooked and crispy bites weren't overly oily.

Such a great little spot! I opted for the Yasai Shoyu ramen (vegetarian option) and loved it. It was loaded with veggies and the broth was fantastic. My partner ordered the miso ramen and said that the pork was cooked perfectly. The servers are kind, the atmosphere is cozy, there's Sapporo on tap, and it's so close to the waterfront! A must-visit in Halifax :)

We dined here on our first night in Halifax. It was overcast, stormy and gross, due to the residue leftover from hurricane Dorian. Soup sounded perfect to us, and that is how we found Buta Ramen. When we arrived, we were lucky enough to find parking right outside on the street. This is amazing because finding parking in downtown Haifax is a huge pain, and the spots are almost never open. We parked and got inside and waited for a table. Right off the bat we knew things were off. The waiter and waitress were running around with their faces twisted into a look of stress, and it never went away. When we sat at our table, we placed our orders of the tonkatu ramen and an order of house and shiba zuke pickles, and then sat back and waited. Little did we know how long the wait was going to be. It took about 20 minutes for the first bowl of ramen to hit the table. Thankfully the pickles also were served then, or else I would have had nothing to eat for another hour. I waited and waited for the second bowl of ramen to arrive, and after an hour passed we finally flagged down the waitress. The waitress was shocked that she only put in my husband's order, and was visibly upset that mine never went in. After understanding that we had now waited over an hour for a bowl of soup, I would have thought that they would have rerouted another order to us but no. They continued to serve countless other tables the same thing I ordered, and mine went to the bottom of the queue. Once the ramen did arrive, it was lackluster, with overcooked noodles, bland soup base, and few toppings. We couldn't wait to pay and leave. Definitely one of the worst ramen experiences we've had in recent history.

Dartmouth location. Nice, clean and cozy restaurant with excellent service. I ordered my favourite ramen: tantanmen. It was good. I was very satisfied. What keeps this ramen, and any ramen really, from being truly great; is the broth. Ramen chefs agonize over their broth. It's like proper bbq in southern USA. They wake up at ungodly hours to taste, adjust and perfect. This was not that. And that's fine. Fresh ingredients, wonderfully chewy noodles and a savoury broth. It's good ramen and well worth the visit. I'll be back.

    Nice interior

Well designed interior, cozy and modern. Food came out fairly fast. Tasted good, we have had better but by all means these food are good!

Yaki Soba, Angry Edemame and Spicy Miso Ramen

We loved our dinner at Buta Ramen! Really cool place with great service and delicious food. My wife had the Yaki Soba and I had the Spicy Miso Ramen. We would definitely go again!

The outside of the restaurant doesn't look like much but don't let that fool you: the food and service here are superb. My husband ordered the angry edamame and yasai shoyu ramen and I had the veggie yaki soba. Our waiter was attentive and the food was so delicious. The yaki soba veggies were sautéed to perfection and the amount of veggies were plentiful; red, green and yellow peppers, cauliflower, bean sprouts, cabbage, and Japanese pumpkin. I appreciate that they were sparing with the red onion as I find onions can be overpowering and it doesn't take much to do so. My only regret was not coming here sooner as we ate here during our last evening in Halifax. If we do travel to Nova Scotia again, I'd definitely be a repeat customer.

Buta Ramen has the best ramen in Halifax. The restaurant was clean and staff were friendly. The service was fast too. We tried their Chompon which was full of seafood and had a kick to the broth. If you're in the mood for spicy broth, this is it. The noodles were cooked perfectly as well. The tonkatsu ramen was delicious as well. They also had big portions so it's budget friendly.

Octopus ball, fried baby octopus, and fried vegie croquette.

About the starters, I love the Tako Yaki(octopus ball) the best while my partner loves the Korokke(fried vegie croquette) the most. The ramen(I had tantanmen) is the best we have had in Hfx. The soup of it is full of flavour but not uncomfortably greasy. The egg in it is very well made and the vegie is fresh. Environment is cozy and clean. They had fried chopped garlic on every table which is an excellent partner with the ramen. The staff are nice and considerate. I would recommend they have more everyday Japanese-style choices. Probably because we just watched some tv shows on that and are looking for good deep fried pork steak, lol.

However; my last three orders from them have been terrible and costly. The first time, I ordered the king crab, which was markedly more expensive and received imitation. I ordered tuna belly and they asked to replace it with tuna with no compensation for the difference in cost after I agreed. I swept this under the rug. The next order; as an appetizer I ordered softshell crab appetizer, they sent the roll, again I swept it under the rug. This third order was the straw that broke the camels back: I'm done. My order compared to what I got, is in in the pictures. Ordered spicy salmon roll - got Tuna Maki. Ordered Negi-Hamachi (suppose to be yellow tail and green onion), got a salmon roll. Not maki with avocado or even tempura bits; just rice and salmon. Vast cost difference. I got the Alaskan roll I ordered, but that is mine and the other two are my kids rolls, so I clearly won't eat in front of them. I'm done. Something is seriously wrong there and at this point it's a waste of money.

East Coast Dumpling House is one of those diamonds in the suburban rough, and their namesake specialty is what put them up near the top of my hit list. My wife and I stopped in for a weekend lunch while running errands in the area, and although the restaurant was empty when we showed up, a few more tables showed up and quickly filled up the small space. Being our first time here, we went all-in on the dumplings - pan-fried pork with bok choy, and steamed xiao long bao. I was really happy to see soup dumplings on the menu as they're a rarity, even in bigger markets than Halifax. We tacked on an order of edamame to ostensibly have a proper vegetable with our meal. The salty beans came out quickly, and we picked away at them as we chatted and eagerly waited for our dumplings. Being first in line to order meant that we didn't have to wait long though. The pan-fried pork dumplings came with a lovely lattice on them, which really amped up the crispness of the dumplings, while they still maintained soft, pliable wrappers on their other side. The pork inside was well-seasoned, tender and moist, and although not soup dumplings, there were some squirts of juice as we bit into them! We didn't have Chinese spoons to cradle the xiao long bao as you go through the process of eating them (nibble the top to let them cool down, slurp broth through said hole, then devour), but we made do with small dipping bowls. The broth was meaty and savoury, with a viscous mouthfeel, and each dumpling was a delight. A return visit saw us coming by on a Friday evening, with a couple tables already occupied and takeout orders steadily coming and going. The food took a little longer this time, but was well worth the wait. They were out of udon noodles, so we went with the Singapore noodles. The tender egg noodles had a heavy dose of curry powder and a hint of sweetness, and the added chicken was tender and moist, with a touch of colour from the wok. We couldn't not get some dumplings, and our order of xiao long bao were just as good the second time around. We also tacked on an order of chicken bao to round out our meal. The bao had a non-traditional feel (or one I'm not familiar with, which is just as likely) with the bao bun having been fried, and shredded lettuce coming in it as well. Pickled cucumber and julienned carrot were more typical, and some hoisin sauce added a layer of sweet and savoury. East Coast Dumpling House has standard Chinese-Canadian fare, but their standout dishes are the ones that are their namesakes and other authentic dishes, and it's those that make ECDH worth the trip to Cole Harbour.

Gangnam Korean BBQ caught my eye as a place that would have something different - and more flavour - to offer. Their menu has a broad selection of options, with a couple dozen apps, as well as several each of rice and noodle dishes, soups, hot pot and of course, their namesake Korean BBQ. I was looking for something that wouldn't splatter my work clothes in some sort of sauce, so I went with the tofu bibimbap. It was a great mixture of crisp, pickled veg, a rich fried egg with crispy edges and a runny yolk, and soft, lightly fried tofu. A side of gochujang let me spice it up to my own taste. The bibimbap came with bonus sides of miso soup, kimchi and danmuji (yellow, pickled daikon). All added their own flavours and textures to the meal - the warm, savoury soup, the funky snap of the kimchi, and I really enjoyed the danmuji. In addition to its vibrant yellow, the pickling mellowed out the earthy funk of the daikon but each bite still had a great crunch and light tartness that helped cut through the richer parts of my meal. All told, it was a delicious meal and at an easy-on-the-wallet price of just $14 for a hearty, but healthy, meal. A return visit saw me coming by with my wife for a weekend lunch. She went for a couple of their many delicious-sounding apps, the fried Brussels sprouts and yakitori, while I went for the jajangmyeon (black bean pork and noodles). My wife's dishes came out first, and impressively quickly. Deep fried Brussels sprouts are this generations beet and goat cheese salad in their ubiquity, but hey, it works! With just the right level of char, the crispy cruciferous vegetable was dressed in a teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds for extra flavour. The yakitori weren't quite what I expected, as the chunks of chicken were deep fried instead of the typical grilling, but I appreciated their crisp crust that the frying imparted. A bed of spinach and drizzle of sauces felt like an unnecessary deviation that would be better served by a smoky, charcoal grilling, but they weren't bad so much as a bit superfluous. After a short wait, and a few stolen bites of my wife's food, my hefty bowl of noodles was before me. The noodles had a similar look to ramen, minus the de rigeur crinkle and weren't as supple, and came with a veritable sea of black bean sauce. The deeply rich, savoury and sweet sauce doused every noodle and then some, with tender bites of pork, cabbage and onion fleshing out the dish. Our server said this was his favourite dish on the menu, and I can see why - it's a bit of a deep cut versus the more familiar dishes to us non-Koreans, but it checked a lot of delicious boxes! My times sampling Gangnam's food have been nothing but complete successes, and while I benefit from proximity to them, they're a destination-worthy place with wonderfully executed food at more than reasonable prices.
