Went recently for my brothers birthday! It's a lovely laid back but classy environment. Service was great - friendly, quick. I had the edamame to start. I found they wete medicore; not quite as salty and a little on the smaller side. For my rolls I had the spicy scallop and mini kamikaze rolls. They were very good! The mini kamikaze may be one of my favorite rolls. Deepfried, cream cheese... how can you go wrong? Lots of parking available, but it's a busy lot as it's in Dartmouth Crossing. read more

I came here one day recently after my shift at work was over to get some sushi. I have only had sushi once before so I was looking forward to it. I got there shortly after 3pm so I ordered from the discount menu. I ordered the pork dumplings, california roll without roe, and shrimp tempura roll. The dumplings were very good and I enjoyed them a lot. The california roll (6pc) was also very good and fresh tasting, better than the first time I had sushi somewhere else. The shrimp tempura roll (5pc) looked appealing but it was quite big and impossible to eat in one bite. Having to eat a piece of sushi in two bites is messy, and I am still not an expert with chopsticks so I probably looked like a fool trying to eat my sushi. I eventually gave up and took the remaining 4 pieces home. The taste of the shrimp tempura roll was very good though, and the service was excellent as well. The bill came to about 17$ before tip which is good for sushi and an appetizer. Overall, I will definitely go back to sushi nami and I look forward to trying some more sushi options. read more

We have recently fell in love with this location. The sushi is fantastic and the ambience calming and cool. It seems to be getting busier every time we visit and we can understand why! The sushi here is amazing! The fusion rolls are where it's at! Make sure you try a house roll with which ever our preference of fish. We usually get the red snapper. VERY yummy and full of flavour! They have to have the best dragon rolls I've had in a long time! We are making plans to return often and hopefully experience their tapenyaki (sp?) grill for an upcoming birthday! Being a Dartmouth-side sushi lover is a bit of a 'beggars can't be choosers' situation for the time being. While Sushi Nami is loved by many across their surprisingly large number of locations, it just never really hits the spot for me and this location proved to be no different. Definitely more focused on the fusion side of the sushi game, you can expect a lot of creativity in their menu. Tempura bits tucked in the rolls, mangos and bananas flying about, fruit sauces, maki that has been deep-fried all together...take your pick. It certainly makes it more fun to pore over the menu and choose new things to try that are a skootch more exciting than your average California roll. For my last visit, I went with the Firecrackers Dream (choice of cucumber or avocado with spicy mayo, tempura bits, and bread crumbs - $4.95) that all vegetarians seem to rave about, and the Vegetable Dragon Roll (sweet potato tempura, cucumber, avocado, grilled vegetables, inari, mushroom - $8.95). Both were okay but I wouldn't rush to have them again. The first was my favourite of the two but the bread crumbs were really dry and powdery. Most of it fell off before it reached my mouth and the rest...well, I don't know...I just wanted it to go away. Likewise, the Veg Dragon Roll just had too much going on for me. It's basically your standard yam roll with layers of grilled vegetables and mushrooms over top. It looks super fancy but just isn't my kind of sushi. I'd say this is more based on my personal preference than any great misstep on Sushi Nami's part. Down right disappointing. I love Suhi Nami Royale, or rather the Halifax location! So when we were in the neighbourhood, looking to eat before our flick, we opted for here. BAD IDEA! While the Sushi, is always good at a Sushi Nami, the service left us almost late for "the Hobbit" The six of us showed up at 6pm, order by 6:20 - Movie at 8:30 We figured lots of time. Shouldn't be a problem. We all ordered assorted whatever dinners, and most of us an extra roll, nothing to difficult or out there. We waited, others came, others went, take outs came, and left, we waited some more. At 7:10 our server told us our food would be ready shortly! We started getting excited, since we were all starving! At 7:32 our food started showing up! What the hell? ready soon? How did it take over an hour for us to get our food? Good thing we can eat fast! By the time we finished eating, and rounded the server up to pay, it was almost 8pm. Just no acceptable. I will not be gracing this location with my presence again. Halifax, and other Sushi bars will see me! read more

I love this sushi. My favourite roll by far is the fuji mountain roll. You will get messy while eating it. It comes buried in spicy sauce and panko with lots of flavour. I always try and order something different but get caught up in wanting my usual. I think they are fairly priced, offer a good selection for seafood and non seafood lovers, and the staff has always been helpful and friendly. The miso soup is the best in the city in my opinion and the agedashi tofu is to die for. It's a great place for lunch while out shopping or a great dinner spot before catching a movie. The only catch at this place is the drinks are really over priced. $2.49 for a glass of pop and almost $9 for a Sapporo will definitely set you back. Stick to water if you are watching your coin. read more

A sushi newbie... Yep, that is what I am. And really I never eat the ones with raw fish, it's more the vegetarian items that I enjoy. That being said, I visited the Dartmouth Crossing location of Sushi Nami Royale just prior to Christmas. I went with 2 friends, one of which is a sushi lover and quite well versed on the typical offerings. So while we perused the menu he ordered 2 helpings of Edamame. Where the heck has that been all my life? Holy smokes. Deliciously salty little green pods of goodness! I ate so many it was probably a crime.... Great starter!! My main was the Vegetable Dragon Roll and it did not disappoint! Service was friendly and quick (our server is a pastry chef with the coolest tattoos EVER! All pastries!). Restaurant was clean and prices in my opinion were very reasonable. I will visit again - and soon!!! read more

I ordered the deluxe maki combo for take out. A good mix of specialty rolls and california and salmon rolls. Everything was fresh and the portions of fish in the maki were reasonable. They had the meal ready in 15mins for pick up --despite the place looking pretty full of people when I arrived. A solid 7.5/10 in terms of taste compared to other sushi I've had. At ~$25 after taxes, I'd say it was 4 or so dollars too pricey. Options are limited for good sushi in Dartmouth (much better than Genji), so I'd go again. read more

Love this place! Love the location as well! My husband and I frequent this place often, usually only for their maki. I find this place makes their rolls on the large side, but they have a lot of unique options for their rolls, and we haven't been disappointed yet! My favorites are definitely the rainbow roll, the green dragon roll, and the mini kamikaze roll when I'm feeling particularly ~spicy~ ;) the caterpillar roll was really surprising the first time we tried it, as it is rolled with a piece of cucumber instead of the traditional rice and seaweed, delicious! An interesting experience, to be sure. It's the first time I've ever had sushi better the next day. Let's deal with some of the good stuff first: ambiance and service. It's a sparsely decorated space but I don't consider that a bad thing. So many big box restaurants are cram-packed with "flair," it can be overwhelming. Staff seemed very friendly and welcoming. They were able to answer any questions my dining companion and I had - which is, unfortunately, not a skill all servers have. The sushi? It was okay. It wasn't great. I appreciated the diversity of the menu however. I did try one or two new rolls but was not a fan. Nothing specific other than perhaps too much emphasis on avocado (I know, I know, avocado is the nectar of the gods...). It's pretty rare that that I don't finish my plate when I go for sushi but I was underwhelmed/disappointed so I got some wrapped to go. The next day, I unpacked it, let it get to room temperature and it was pretty good. So, it's not the best sushi I've ever had but it's okay. read more

If you want more than the most rudimentary sushi you really shouldn't be going here. Ordered lunch in a party of 4. Everyone but me got a lunch special. Our food took a very long time to arrive and we kept checking our watches because we wanted to get back to the office in less than 1 hour: we didn't. The hamachi (yellowtail) looked more white and a touch of brown - it lacked the appropriate subtle pink color. The taste and texture were similarly lacking. At $6-7 for two nigiri style roles I think I was robbed. The tako (octopus) was fine but it is difficult to mess than up. It wasn't overly chewy but they didn't do anything to enhance the experience (green onions, a dab of wasabi etc.). The spider roll (soft shell crab) was fine and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately my tab was about $30 and I think I enjoyed about $10-$15 in food so this was overpriced. I looked at the other items my friends got and I wasn't impressed. They feature California rolls prominently in all the lunches. As for sushi I am not excited by crab stick and the California roll is my least favorite item. I admit it is popular but I consider that grocery store sushi and the good stuff you can only get at restaurants is what I am after. The menu was boring and I wondered why the toro was only $7 CAD - I assume that the fatty tuna is as poor a showing as the hamachi and thus $7 is not a good deal but another rip-off. I have written positive reviews for sushi places but this restaurant doesn't deserve one. I almost gave this place a single star. If you aren't that into sushi you won't notice how poorly this place does sushi - I don't mean you any offense. The simple stuff is hard to get wrong and this place does those items just fine. Having newly discovered my love for rice and fish, my mother and I went here for a dinner date. If I remember correctly, Sushi Nami was one of the first places to open in this section of DC. I've mentioned in previous reviews, that i'm disappointed in the food options in dartmouth crossings: most of the places are chains and or the locally owned ones aren't that great. However, Sushi Nami is a breath of fresh air amongst the greasy french fries and burger joints that surround it. Don't get me wrong, I love a good burger, but sometimes a gal just wants to chill and what better place to go with her mama bear then a cozy sushi place? It's really nice a roomy, with comfy chairs and... this looks so cool... a section for your party or group. No, I don't mean a booth. I meant there's actually a section that can cater, at your table, in front of your eyes, the food you want. So cool. I thought this place was going to be expensive, but we were lucky enough to grab a lunch special which was.. I think $10 each. What did it include? Miso soup, salad, choice of chicken or beef and 6 sushi rolls. I wasn't a fan of the miso soup but everything else was SOOooooOOoOoOooo YUMMY. On a side note, I did take a quick glance to the price of just buying sushi and, in my opinion, the prices are fair. Slightly more expensive then your regular sushi but Sushi Nami is a "higher end" place then Bento in Sobey's. The service? All I can say is; thumbs up! She was so nice and courteous and very informative. She would respectively inform us about how to properly drink the soup and was always around filling up our glasses with water. read more

I had eaten at their restaurant in Halifax, but had never tried their spot in the Crossing. The space is on the small side, but they do have one large teppanyaki table, though no one was using it when I was there. The decor is done in an Asian style, and could be simplistically beautiful, but there are water stains on the ceiling when you walk in, and you can tell by the walls that the construction on the place was finished a little too fast. Also they have a lot of tacky Halloween decorations which really took away from the minimal styling. The menu is large, I went for the vegetable sushi combo, which comes with miso soup and salad. The combo is a roll of cucumber/avocado and 5 pieces of vegetable nigiri, which included squash, sweet potato, asparagus and an inari pocket. It was all good, but a little on the bland side. A small pet peeve, there was specialty drink features menu on the table, and I ordered one of the beers. I was told they didn't have it, and hadn't for a while. Take it off the menu! If your out of stock for a shipment that's fine, but if it doesn't look like you'll be getting any soon, don't advertise it! read more

In town on business and came here with a colleague for dinner. Ordered spicy tuna maki roll, vegetable dragon roll, sunomono salad, and gyoza. Service is friendly and the restaurant is decorated with a modern flair and an open concept. The sushi was good. The spicy tuna roll was not done the same way most other places do it. It was not spicy enough for my liking but they gave us a side of the spicy mayo so that helped. The veggie sushi was quite good with a nice combination of veggies and textures. The gyoza was a thin delicate pastry wrapped around a light pork filling. Perfect!! Definitely worth a repeat visit the next time I'm in town! read more

Look, when you're in Nova Scotia, you can't cry about the quality of sushi. This isn't exactly L.A or NY. However, this place really does the job when you want to fill your sushi fix. The nigiri sushi are pretty thick cuts, and the rolls are decently sized. My recommendation is that they incorporate the ponzu sauce on the Albacore Tuna. I'm not sure if they do it on purpose, but many restaurants are doing this and its a very tasty way to deliver that fish. I also recommend that they utilize their sushi bar for customers only. I've gone in twice and the first time they had to clean it off and move all their paperwork and folding projects in order to seat us, and we still had very little interaction with the Sushi chefs, and they second time it looked the same so I just chose to sit at the table. But the sushi bar is a sushi restaurant's money maker... Sushi Chef's should really be the one's selling the place. read more

The undisputed king of sushi in Dartmouth! There's really not much more to say...the staff, food, and atmosphere at the Dartmouth Crossing Sushi Nami Royale is as good as it gets. Every time I have been there it's been delicious and a wonderful time. There are other good sushi places...Genji springs to mind, and the new place, Mizu. But no one is taking the crown from Sushi Nami Royale anytime soon. The only possible downside is that the prices here are a bit on the premium side....but you are paying the extra cash for extra good food. I've been here a few times and while it's not the best sushi in the city, it's a consistently good option. Lately I have been deviating from sushi and trying other Japanese dishes. A few days ago I decided to go with ramen with pork belly. There is an option to have it mild or spicy and I went with spicy. The noodles seemed fresh and the pork belly had a nice flavour but spicy it was not. I wasn't going to mention it because I have a high tolerance for spicy food and therefore am in the minority, but the server asked specifically if the spice level was to my satisfaction, so I was honest. She came back with a shaker full of the spices they use to make it spicy, along with a side of chili sauce. That was very thoughtful and appreciated. My girlfriend had the tuna avacodo salad to start and some various sushi rolls. The salad was excellent but unfortunately the fish in the rolls did not taste fresh. Still, we have had more positive experiences than negative here and the restaurant itself is always clean and inviting. read more

I'd give here a 3.5 actually, the same as I have for the Clayton Park location, where I've eaten many times over the last several years, but only got to try the Dartmouth one on a cloudy Sunday in August. I was greeted immediately upon entering and offered a table in the center of the restaurant, with their being probably seating for 50 or 60 in total? High ceilings, kitchen station to the rear, some natural lighting coming in the front, clean, simple decor. I tried the spicy edamame (tossed in a garlicky marinara sauce? 5.95) which I always love. Comes with a bowl of lemon water for your fingers afterwards. The veggie tempura was standard, very hot, with one piece of red pepper, a zucchini, an eggplant, couple of green beans, yam. (6.50) The Firecrackers Dream roll ("your choice of cucumber or avocado with spicy mayo, tempura bits, and bread crumbs" 5.50) which I always get with avocado is very good and filling. I always want to try more rolls but know my eyes are way bigger than my stomach. My cousin and her boyfriend tried a few other rolls and the Japanese eggplant (with sweet miso and ginger sauce 6.95). Friendly service. I'd go back here anytime but I want to try other items for variety next time. read more

My Husband and I have recently become fairly regular guests here at Dartmouth Crossing. We love the food and especially the service. We usually dine in during the week and often have a great server (Jennifer). She is very informative, always friendly and always remembers us and greats us with a smile. She also has a great memory. I still am shocked at how people can remember so many orders, without any mistakes! We love the fusion special rolls, the tempaura, and the spicy miso soup! Sushi Nami is one of the better known sushi places in town and they do everything quite well. Medium sized space, fairly big menu, etc. But did you know, they also serve the BEST RAMEN in Halifax? That is not something to take lightly. A smooth, creamy broth, and everything fresh. The sushi is all good and average, along with all the apps. But if you're on the hunt for ramen this is where you should go. (Note the vegetarian option is still served in a pork based broth, still delicious but definitely not vegan) read more

Random slow service combined with lack of identity highlight the train wreck that is Sushi Nami Royale. 45 minutes on a Sunday for a bento box makes one crave a costco hotdog. The table next to us was served a soda in a clearly cracked glass, while the cleanliness of this spot leaves something to be desired. What is with sushi joints lately and tidiness? The server was extremely apologetic for the cracked glass, but said nothing of the lengthy wait for our food. If the front of the house is not in order, it makes you wonder how the back of the house is performing. This was evident in our visit, and the frustration was shared with the diners around us. The build up of this new construction is pedestrian at best. My 5 year old excels more at construction. Sorry Sushi Nami, you missed badly. You do get marks for having items not usually found at Japanese Restos however. read more

The Good: VERY fresh butterfish and hamachi today. absolutely gorgeous. THE BAD Service: First impression, when I asked the server to please get the chef's nigiri recommendations for today, she just stared blankly at me and almost opened her mouth to perhaps give me *her* recommendations or perhaps she was telepathically communicating with the chef. Maybe she just doesn't know anything about sushi and has no idea that different things are diferent qualities on different days. more about that later. I couldn't exactly tell if she was annoyed or bewildered at my simple request. Lacking tact, she pretty much belted out "HEY JOEY, he wants to know what do you recommend for nigiri?" Thankfully she actually walked over to him so he wasn't forced to yell back. He thoughtfully looked through the fish and made some SOLID recommendations, 3/4 of which I ordered and they were SO fresh and delicious. Was disappointed at the under-seasoned and cold rice though. All things told, it was aiight. The freshness of the fish really made up for the rice. Then having to listen to the server yammer on to the (visibly annoyed, refusing to make eye contact with her) chefs about her first day in culinary school, about gutting really "slimy disgusting" fish and she almost quit right then and there. Then talking about how to traditionally disembowel a sheep with a sword. Also then having to listen to her continue yammering to the chefs, asking questions about sushi as if it was her first day and she had never seen sushi before. For example, "wow it's so cool how you flip the sushi over when you make it.. its just so, you know, cool", "what is butterfish anyway, is it like buttery or something?", "yeah I can't even eat salmon because I had a bad experience." I tuned her out eventually. Customers shouldn't have to hear you yakking ungracefully. Keep it in the kitchen. I'm really disappointed. read more

The orders consisted of Sweet Potato Croquette - nicely fried on the outside but the stuffing were a runny mixture of sweet potato, cream cheese, avocado, onion and seaweed but one can't tell what one is eating. Sweet Dream vegetarian maki did have good sweet potato flavour. Japanese Eggplant did have a nice taste but the sauce was unremarkable.Seaweed Cucumber Rolls tasted just like cucumber which in the best of time has no taste whatsoever. The Spider Roll is very much the industry standard with no surprises. The Teriyaki Beef Roll was on the dry side, most likely was cooked days before. The Teriyaki Chicken Dinner came with Miso soup that was water downed a bit too much. The chicken would have tasted a lot better if it was grilled before serving while the Vegetable Tempura was on the greasy side. That is a common mistake of the kitchen when the temperature of the Fryer is not hot enough, the batter does not crisp up and starts to absorb oil. As for service, it was slow. Food arrived long before eating utensils were remembered. The final word is " I have better." read more
