Really disappointing experience at Wasabi Sushi. Most of the food we were served was cold or…read morelukewarm at best when it should have been hot. The chicken skewer was especially concerning. It was dried out, tasted off, and I didn't feel comfortable eating it. I told our waitress that the chicken tasted off, but she became defensive and insisted there was nothing wrong with it because they had been selling it all day. They remade one chicken skewer, which came out hot, but the rest of the food remained cold or barely warm. We barely ate our meals because of the quality of the food. When it came time to deal with the bill, the waitress was confrontational and initially offered to take only a small amount off despite how little we had eaten. We ultimately left $20 toward the bill. As we were leaving, the waitress yelled at us, "Don't come back." Needless to say, we won't. I will say the sushi chef was much nicer and seemed genuinely apologetic about the situation, which I appreciated. I don't expect every restaurant experience to be perfect, but I do expect concerns about food quality--especially chicken that tastes off--to be taken seriously and handled professionally. Unfortunately, that wasn't our experience here.

I called the restaurant and I couldn't hear the lady in the phone properly so as any restaurant they ask you for your name to make the pickup order but I guess she didn't need that information and interrupted me saying "NO, NO, NO" and I went silence until I'm like hello? and then I can finally order my food and she goes it's gonna take 15 minutes BYE and since I expected the order to take longer than that I tell her wait wait I am not going to be able to come in 15 minutes and she very rudely replied to me saying then you come here and order, ok? What kind of costumer service is that? I was so excited to try this sushi place but now I am not going to order anything because of the arrogant and rude attitude of that woman which left me with a bitter taste.

Located in an unremarkable strip mall near Kearney Lake road, it has a delightful, bright, light and authentic interior. It features tables and booths, with a long chef's counter along one side and can accommodate quite large groups. Menu is comprehensive, with many traditional starters, simple rolls and some more luxurious Specials, bentos, combo's and ramen among the features. I went for my favourite appetizer, tako yaki, followed by the Fuji san special roll. No complaints at all, the roll was enormous and filled to the brim with fish and other delights. At eight pieces, it was almost a meal in itself. It really needs a group to select several options and share. Together with a small sake (served in the prettiest jug I've ever seen) and tip it all came to just north of $40. Definitely worth several more visits, especially with the cooler weather indicating ramen for lunch!

Halifax is becoming more like a Real City every year - soaring towers popping up, devastating…read moreincome inequality, and now it's got an izakaya! While sushi has become ubiquitous across the country in the past couple decades, Japanese cuisine has much more to it than raw fish. Izakayas are more relaxed than the typical Western view of Japanese cuisine and culture, with a fun, pub-like vibe. Come by for drinks and the foods that go well with hooch - deep fryer fare, shareable, salty - there's a bit of everything! Coming by for a late, weekend lunch, we weren't so much in the mood for a party as some tasty bites, and Kanpai still delivered. Food comes out of the kitchen as its ready, and first up was the Angry Edamame. The deep fried beans weren't too raging, with a good balance between heat and sweet. Next to hit our table was the korokke, which should sound familiar as its an Anglicization of the Japanization of the French "croquette". Steaming hot out of the deep fryer, two korokke were cut in half, exposing the smooth, creamy potato within. The panko breading was fantastically crisp, and they made for good dipping in the salty and savoury sauce. Kanpai's agedashi tofu was artfully plated, with a mix of veg and tofu with an airy-light tempura batter. This isn't the "tempura" that you see at many (non-Japanese) restaurants, which is often indistinguishable from a regular batter, but the proper, barely-there, translucent coating of a true tempura. Crisp in spots and soaking up the savoury and salty dashi broth in others, its a tasty way to get at least *some* vegetables in for the day! There's hardly a culture in the world that doesn't have some variation of fried chicken, and Japan is no different. Karaage is like adult chicken nuggets, with actual pieces of chicken, a crisp breading, and a soy-based dipping sauce to punch up the flavour (sorry, not sorry, sweet and sour lovers!). Karaage, drink, repeat. Our table's favourite dish was likely the Spicy Pork Amiyaki - strips of tender grilled pork coated in a gochujang-esque sauce, with a bed of green onion and topped with razor-thin red onion. The big flavours and great balance and execution made for a dish that disappeared quickly! Having had such a great PG-rated meal at Kanpai, I'm looking forward to coming back for night out of both food and drink!
