Sushi Jet is what would happen if sushi was invented in Halifax: enthusiastically fried, generously sauced, and paired with things that make you tilt your head and wonder "why." I'm not saying anyone comes to an all-you-can-eat Nova Scotia sushi joint expecting an authentic Japanese experience, but this place takes a creative interpretation of the genre...let's call it sushi-inspired. Case in point: the fruit situation. Strawberries and bananas aren't exactly traditional sashimi accompaniments, but if you've ever thought "you know what this salmon needs? Fruit," then you're in the right place. Personally, the only fruit that I believe belongs in sushi is an avocado. I sampled an ambitious cross-section of the menu: hand rolls, nigiri, regular rolls, tempura, soups, curry, short ribs, weekend specials. The real adventure comes with anything sporting an action-movie name like "dynamite" or "volcano"--I discovered these translate to "swimming in sweet, creamy sauce." By the end of the meal, even if you skip dessert, everything starts tasting like dessert. Your seared nigiri arrives pre-glazed with creamy mayo and sauce, as if they're really committed to the theme. The only item that was safe from the sugar was the sashimi. That said, the service was genuinely great. Food arrived quickly, and the staff were as sweet as the sauces--friendly, attentive, and clearly taking pride in what they do. At nearly $40 per person, you could hit an izakaya for a different experience, but if you're the type who thinks donair sauce is a food group and condensed milk improves everything, this might just be your spot. read more

There wasn't anything super outstanding to call out other than the mackerel - I found that the mackerel tasted fresher and tastier than the mackerel I usually have in AYCE sushi places in the greater Toronto area. Near the entrance, there is a nice fish pond with dry ice, and there are various tables throughout which are spread out and not too cramped. The restaurant is accessible as there is an elevator! My only complaint would be the ordering system in the iPad. Some menu items that normally would come by piece (i.e. 1 piece per order) would come in larger numbers. I've been here twice and the service was warm and friendly. The food was decent, I had the all you can eat dinner and lunch. Definitely go for dinner instead of lunch, there are more options. The highlight was the ice cream, ask for ice cream at the end of lunch/dinner!!! It's so good. The dim sum cakes were amazing and the sashimi was fresh. Overall very satisfying ayce sushi lunch in downtown Halifax! The nigiri and sashimi were good, with the torched red snapper topping the leaderboard. The special rolls, however, were really.. nothing special. A ton of rice and not enough fish to make them really satisfying. I would skip special rolls and save space for more nigiri, sashimi, and extras. Service was quick, and the employees were kind and accommodating. A cute and polite robot might bring some of your orders to the table. If you take away one thing from this review - dessert people, get the mango sticky rice. read more

It's wheelchair accessible!! They have an elevator designated for wheelchairs! It's a very gorgeous place, with a huge fountain in the front. Servers were super nice and they even have robots to deliver your sushi if the waiters are busy with something else. I ordered the Peggy's Cove roll and the Rainbow roll. Unfortunately, I thought the sauce on the Peggy's Cove roll was a bit too sweet and not for me, but nonetheless the sushi was fresh and tasty. A friend recommended this place to me and it did not disappoint! My family and I chose to go with the All You Can Eat lunch menu and I was pleased to see the large variety of items we could choose from. The place is very spacious, well-decorated and has great service. There was constantly a waiter or waitress walking by to take away our empty plates and were all very friendly. Everything I tried was really good: the rolls, the sushi, the miso soup, the pad thai, and also the fried banana. My only complaint would be the rice used for the rolls and the sushi, which was not sticky enough and would sometimes make the roll/sushi fall apart. It could have been worse but it definitely affected the overall taste of the sushi. I left this review on GMB: "I ordered $130 worth of sushi via Skip The Dishes. All 4 sushi pizzas were cold and the sushi was smothered in globs of spicy mayo. I had to wipe off the excess mayo. :(" and provided a picture of the mayo globs. They replied to the review, asking us to call. We called, they hung up on us 3 times. After the person on the phone laughed, we asked (several times) for the owner's number. As I called the owner I realized this policy of laughing at paying customers is trickled down from the top. This owner on the phone blamed Skip the Dishes for the terrible customer service we've received and when I explained that Skip isn't to blame for the mayo coated all over everything he told me that's how it's supposed to be. So i guess don't order from them unless you're low on spicy mayo at home. When I told him his answers were not satisfactory, he too laughed at me. This is the worst customer experience I've had in a long time. At least we can go to corporate and complain but meanwhile, order from any other Sushi Jet than the Spring Garden location. The other local Sushi Jets we've tried have been wonderful. The extremely tender beef was bathed in a well-seasoned, slightly citrusy marinade and topped with slices of onions. The sushi and rolls however, were not up-to-par. There was too much rice and not enough filling/toppings. We also ordered the wonderful rolls which had crab, cream cheese and pieces of bananas in them - which I found was a little strange but wasn't too bad. The service was quick despite it being a full Sunday night and there were a number of people waiting to be seated. The servers came by several time to check if we have enough water. That being said we left after our dinner fairly disappointed. We arrived at 945pm (the restaurant closes at 11). We enjoyed the all you can eat ordering as it's not something we have where we're from... that being said just after 10 pm after we got seated, settled, and began ordering and just started eating our starters, an employees came over to tell us that they would be closing early at 1030 and that we had until 1010 to order the rest of our food - it's was 10:05 when we were told this. We had to rush to figure out what to finish ordering and rushed to finish eating. We were still charged $40 per person, which was the most disappointing part of it all as we did not get to enjoy our food without the stress of hurrying to eat and rush to figure out what else we needed to order. This restaurant is actually one of the worst sushi places in Halifax. The service was below sub-par. The waitress would never come check up on us, our water didn't get refilled, food we ordered never came out, and we had to walk to the front desk to about it. In one particular instance, we had ordered food that never came to us, we asked the waitress whether or not the food was coming out or not. She replied that she was going to go check. For the price, you can certainly get a lot of food, but none of it was particularly tasty. Soup is extremely salty, as is the seaweed salad. The sushi was probably the worst of all of them, with underseasoned plain rice (still warm too). The rolls were large and chunky and mostly rice, and most were 8 pieces per order, which prevents you from getting a variety. There is no sashimi in the ayce menu, and dinner price is 1 dollar higher on fridays and weekends but no change in menus. The tempura was decent. The salmon belly was underseasoned and deep fried??? The grilled fish tasted of baking soda, as did the fried fish. The squid was extremely salty. The beef ribs were probably the item i enjoyed the most, and the thing i would most recommend. Even the ice cream is a bit gritty. But the staff are very friendly, so that's a plus. Service was decently fast, mostly because the restaurant was largely empty. Most of the other reviews have been very negative and I am not sure if I have gone on good nights or there has been a management change but I have only had positive experiences with Sushi Jet. yes it is pricey but sushi tends to be on the more expensive side normally. I would recommend getting the all you can eat when you are hungry enough because there are so many cool dishes to try. And if you are looking for descriptions just ask for a normal menu because they have the descriptors. Sushi Jet is now located beside Shoppers on Spring Garden. I like that the new location is on a busier street since we're more likely to walk by it and be reminded we've been saying "let's try that!" for months now. We had wanted to go to the old location, but it always slipped our minds when we were downtown. Anyways! The two of us walked in the other day and were seated right away even though it was busy. After being seated, we were ignored for a long time even though there were waitresses everywhere. Finally, we were brought water and then we placed our order. It's all you can eat so all you have to do is write down the codes from the items you want and also write down how many orders of each you'd like. We ordered cautiously since it was our first time and we didn't know what the portion sizes were like. You can order as many times as you like so cautious is definitely the way to go since you have to pay for any leftover food. The food started arriving fairly fast, even though it was pretty busy. Everything was nice and hot and full of flavor. I'm not really a fan of seafood (other than crab and shrimp) so I was impressed with their vegetable sushi selection as well as the fact that they offered beef and chicken teriyaki rolls. I also really liked that they offered broccoli tempura since a lot of places don't and I LOVE it! One thing that was slightly disappointing to me was that they don't offer tonkatsu, but they do have chicken katsu so I can't really complain. As for the quality of the food, it was quite a bit better than I was expecting! We always eat at Happy Sushi (the other all you can eat sushi place that's farther away) but the rolls at Sushi Jet are better, in my opinion. They were well made and bigger than your typical all-you-can-eat rolls. We also ordered the yakitori, teriyaki, spring roll, and much more and everything was great - nothing tasting of quick, easy, pre-made garbage that buffet/all-you-can-eat places sometimes try to slip in. I liked that dessert was included and you could pick between banana tempura and ice cream. I found it odd that a Japanese restaurant offered cotton candy ice cream as an option, but it's one of my favorites so I'm not complaining! As I mentioned early on, service wasn't really the greatest. If it's your first time and you're not sure how to order or have questions about any of the options I'm not sure you'd be helped. We actually had a question when we started to order and our server quickly turned and walked away so we decided to just risk ordering without knowing the answer. No one checked-in (or really said anything to us until the very end of our meal) to make sure everything was tasting ok, even though they were at our table many times to drop off more food. They didn't use proper sushi rice, and the rice they did use was tasteless like they didn't add sugar or vinegar. Been eating here for a year now and it's great value for price (Especially at lunch and due to its location, easily accessible for me when I want to eat some sushi) and always yummy (love the wasabi cakes).
