    Eva's first ramen!

Great ramen place with very generous portion sizes. The shishito pepper app and the pork gnocchi were super good. Service was excellent and the staff friendly. This will be a must stop when we go back to Halifax!

Truly Tasty is more of a three-and-a-half for me but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt until I get back for round two. It's a small storefront with a surprisingly large dining room on Quinpool Road serving up oodles of noodles, ramen and dumplings of all kinds. Service was prompt, friendly, helpful, and hilarious with their timing. For example, coming back to ask 'how is everything so far?' as two grown men stare down the last dumpling amidst two, now empty bowls of noodles. But it's okay - she had already checked in once or twice already. The menu has quite a few options including lunch specials and combination deals. On the vegetarian front though, you've got about three choices. Luckily, they're all pretty good. First, you can get the veggie ramen once you sub in the vegetarian curry soup and the base rather than the meat broth. It's an extra buck but it'll get you the ramen experience. Second, you can get the cold ramen bowl subbing in roasted tofu in place of the meat on top. Third, you can do what I did and get the pan-fried veggie noodles that were really satisfying. They could have used a bit more flavour, but the housemade noodles were lovely and there was no grease to them at all. Of course, there are various sides and even a veggie variety of dumplings (Chinese cabbage and egg) that you can pick up along the way. I'll echo some price notes. Lunch for two with a noodle dish each and dumplings to share came to just under $40 before tip. That said, the food was plentiful including 10 dumplings. I think I'd prefer the option to get a half order for days when I don't want to go all out.

I love ramen. I've eaten it in Japan, HI, and NYC. I was a bit shy about trying it in Halifax, but this place did not disappoint. The style may be a little different, as with all of the aforementioned locales, but the food, service and prices were all on point. I will return!

With sadly little fanfare, Truly Tasty opened this summer focusing on two of my preferred Asian foods: dumplings and noodles. While the ramen that is their focus may bring up memories of food budgets blown on booze in university and the resulting diet of Mr. Noodles and flavour packets that contained two days worth of salt, rest assured that the noodles at Truly Tasty are a step above, as everything is made in house. In fact, they may be a staircase above if you factor in the lack of shame in eating here compared with the aforementioned brand of ramen. When you walk in the restaurant, don't worry, there's more than the three tables immediately in front of you. Up the small set of stairs there are more tables lining the wall across from the quasi-open kitchen and in the back. With little kitsch, creamy coloured walls and blacks to contrast, it's a pretty modern and welcoming feel. Settling in and taking a look at the menu, it is as one would expect, being comprised primarily of various ramen and dumpling dishes, with some other mains and sides thrown in. With the myriad of items on the menu and my complete lack of literacy in Chinese (damn you, Dad!), I can't figure out what particular ethnicity of restaurant this is, so I settle on it being 'ambiguously Asian'. That being said, this didn't matter to me so much as them hopefully having some great noodles and dumplings. I decided to go with a baseline order by choosing the house special ramen, which comes with slices of BBQ pork, a seasoned hard boiled egg, bean sprouts, corn and green onion. In addition to that, my lunch buddy and I decided to split some pan fried veggie dumplings, which have cabbage and egg inside. It's early in the week and I'm not sure if Quinpool Road gets much of a lunch rush, so our food arrived fairly quickly, and it certainly looked enticing. With the veggies and meat piled on top of my noodles, I was eager to did in, although the seasoned egg was quite dark from being marinated/cured and was somewhat visually intimidating. With a couple stirs of my chop sticks, everything was nicely mixed together and ready to be devoured. It wass a sizable bowl of soup, but not the somewhat ridiculous proportions of many pho places. The broth is rich and flavourful and was nothing like the chalky stuff you're used to from dry packet mixtures at home. The pork is tender and easily fell apart in my mouth; no need to cut these pieces up. The aforementioned egg had a dominant soy flavour, with others in the background, but it was overcooked or over cured and was a bit rubbery. The plentiful bean sprouts added a nice crunch to the dish and the noodles were soft and tender and were just the right length. The dumplings come in large orders of 10, which can be difficult to manage depending on who you're with, if anyone, but luckily I'm always ready to step up to the plate when it comes to dumplings....OK, any food really, I'm a bit of a piggy. The dumpling wrappers have a nice soft texture, with the added crispness in spots from being pan fried. Honestly, I don't know why anyone would want them just boiled when you get more textures and added flavour from frying. Anti-dumpling-boiling rant sidetracks aside, the filling is a little on the light side for me, as I'm a omnivore through and through and prefer my ambiguously Asian dumplings to have a pork and green onion filling. The cabbage and egg does the trick though, and my 'No Dumpling Left Behind' policy made sure that the plate was empty before I left. Service was friendly and frequent, with fill ups on our tea and check ins on the overall meal, which made for a nice touch as this is often a weak spot at Asian restaurants in the city. I definitely want to come back to sample more dumpling and noodle fare and hopefully by then I'll have figured Truly Tasty out and things won't be quite so ambiguous.

Delicious dumplings! Very good homemade dumplings and a variety of sauces (sriracha, chili, soy sauce, vinegar) I highly recommend the chili sauce. Unfortunately they do not have a vegetarian dumpling option, but they do have vegetarian ramen. The veggie ramen is done with a curry soup and is fresh and delicious. Price wise it is a bit expensive for dumplings (10 for $11+) but it is delicious. The decor is wonderful, and the servers are very friendly and helpful.

I really want to love Truly Tasty. and I am willing to give it more chances to earn that love, because for now, they're lacking a certain...je ne sais quois. Had the vegetable ramen, as did my friend, along with an order of dumplings and the wood fungus salad, which my friend described as "possibly the strangest thing" she'd eaten in her life. The dumplings were juicy and delicious, and the soup was plentiful - more than worth the 10 dollars. The ramen was highly flavoured and filling, Service was so-so - our waitress was friendly enough, though didn't check in with us more than once (no water refils, etc) and there was a bit of a language barrier about the menu. Our meal came to just about $50 dollars, with 2 soups with extras (tofu and shrimp, respectively), dumplings, the salad and teas, which I'm pretty okay with. It was a yummy meal, but it still really felt like something was missing. All said, I would certainly come another day to try more of the menu and hopefully keep kindling the romance.

I was Excited to try what seems to be a growing trend In the HRM food scene- the ramen hut. Having two college kids in tow, there was a good cross section of diners to make for a balanced review. The space is nicely lit and decorated, and we were seated promptly. Following other yelpers advice, we sat by the kitchen so as to get a glimpse of the magic. I was disappointed that I could not see in as it would require you to stand in front on the glass window. That being said, the open kitchen is clean and efficient. Menu has enough choices for all and a solid lunch special. The ramen comes in small and regular, and my smu football facsimile handled the regular easily, it's not for the faint of stomach. They present you with a bean sprout salad after you order, it's very tasty, pairs nicely with the Sapporo on tap (7 for a large). Being a ramen rookie , I asked if the broth was dashi based, and she said it was pork bone based which gave it a milky consistency. I ordered the pork and cabbage dumplings which were accompanied by a soy and a chili oil sauce. The dumplings were among the best I've ever experienced, the sauce lacked the chili bite i was hoping for however. My college lunch mates enjoyed their pork based ramen, while I remarked on the size of my fried chicken ramen, loads of juicy meat. The flavor was lovely, but I found the noodles, which were fresh, to be cooked a little too al dente, giving them a odd texture. Lunch for three with beers and an appetizer with tip was 67 bucks. Oh- the heavyweight footballer ate the noodles happily.

The Ramen here is the ultimate comfort food. I wish I could transport my couch here & cozy up in the corner with their generous servings, my pjs, & a good book. Their soup base takes 8+ hours to simmer to perfection ( the server informed us). The ramen is served in a giant bowl, with a hearty serving of toppings. I ordered the house ramen which contained pork, corn, bean sprouts & a hard boiled egg. It was incredible. The soup base was to die for. My friend opted for the shrimp & broccoli ramen, which came full of large size shrimp, broccoli & sprouts. She thoroughly enjoyed it. We also split pan fried dumplings filled with pork & cabbage. Incredibly fresh & juicy. We paired them with a mix of the chili oil & vinegar that the server recommended. Will definitely be going back to this yummy place again.
