Absolutely disgusting...I ordered the most basic menu item (Drunken noodles) and to say I was disappointed is an understatement. It was made with the wrong noodles (not the flat rice noodles), no flavor, and huge mushrooms literally cut in half and dropped in. So disappointing, especially when you buy lunch while at work and won't know it was poor quality until you get all the way back to your office. Too far to walk back, money wasted, don't eat here and save yourself the trouble. read more

Family operation. Fresh and wonderful food. Wonderful people. Could the interior use a facelift? Yeah. Do I care? Nah. The price is right and the food is good. Some dishes are great. Get the chicken curry -- the regular one, not the "jungle" curry. Add any vegetable you want for a $1. FYI: "In God They Trust / All Others Pay Cash" read more

I always enjoy the nice cozy interior, fast service and good food made fresh at take it easy Thai. Their style is definitely on the mild side so if you want it spicy just ask. "You dipped the chip, you took a bite, and you dipped again." Stick... with... the ... RICE PLATES. There's not that many options for lunch places in downtown, so you give a lot of 2nd chances. The noodle dishes are, well, different. Certainly not classic Thai... possibly some regional variation of what one would normally expect. Not my fave, but others I dragged along didn't complain for $6. The rice plates are good eating for lunch... steamed rice topped with your chosen entree. I like the Basil plates (chicken, pork, or beef) and the Cashew Chicken, careful when they ask you how spicy you want it - medium is pretty hot for me. Go before 12noon or after 1pm if you want a table - they get pretty slammed. I read a few Yelps not crazy about the freshness... I can't agree. it's all right in front of you, a poor man's performance kitchen - they're not hiding anything. read more

So far I have only ordered take out here. Good food and great value. Decent size menu with probably over 50+ dishes. Most dishes are under $8.00 which makes it easier on a skinny wallet. Pros: -Friendly -Lots of choices -Flavorful foods -Inexpensive -Quickly prepared Cons: -**Cash Only** -No attention to details (found several grizzly fat pieces in a beef dish) All in all, it's great for the price and the ideal for lunch-break at work. I will definitely come back to try more of the menu, just probably not with a date or anybody I want to impress. read more

I wanted to like this place because my coworker likes it and I love Thai food. Overall, I'm giving them 2.5 stars. The portions were HUGE and it was pretty cheap ($6.50 for a lot of the dishes). Enough to last you 2 meals. I always order the drunken noodles aka pad kee mao in Thai restaurants because its my favorite Thai dish. Most of the Thai places I've been to, they all end up tasting the same, thus giving me the same happy satisfaction. So it's pretty hard to screw up drunken noodles. The spice level just differs. However, this place disappointingly screwed it up!!! How? The noodles they used were different. Drunken noodles are usually with the thick brown noodles (like pad see ew). The drunken noodles here came out in the white rice noodles like they use in pad thai. I thought, well it can't taste that bad. I took a bite and it threw me off. The white noodles does NOT mesh well with the basil sauce. The chicken and basil were very good however, and it tasted like how drunken noodles should taste. But when I bit into white noodles, I felt sad. The sauce was very good, just wished they use the other thick noodles. Maybe I can request it? I asked for spicy and the spice level was perfect. I noticed they added crushed thai peppers in there. Mmm. I think my coworker ordered drunken noodles as well, but she got pad see ew instead. I tried asking the bus lady but my coworker forgot what she ordered and we ignored the issue. I still think they gave us the wrong order. Anyways, I'll give this place a second chance and try another dish since they do give large portions for a very affordable price. I just won't order their drunken noodles again. The ordering process is you order at the cashier, they hand you a number card, and you sit at any table you desire. Utensils, napkins, take out boxes are located near the register for your own use. However, don't forget to tip the lady who brings the dishes to you and cleans it up after you're done. read more

*Cash only* *Family owned* *Can replace rice with veggies* aka low-carb friendly I've had hits and misses here. But that's only because I love the 'hits' so much I keep coming back to try more, and eventually I get a 'miss'. No bigs. Not mad atcha! Fav Hits: +Spicy & Sour Chicken Soup (I order this 99% of the time) +Pork Coconut Curry (or any coconut curry) +Asparagus dishes +Larb Gai Misses: -Their specials (overpriced & small portions) -Drunken Noodles P.S. The spicy & sour soup I mentioned is SO GOOD, that if I have it for lunch and my bf finds out, he gets mad that I ate it without him. It's also HUGE, so I usually order it as a meal and have leftovers. read more

Bring CASH!! Food: I got the Tofu Jungle Curry with brown rice. It's not saucy. It's dry and spicy! Yummy flavor!! Green beans were fresh and the rice was good! Now the tofu, I've had better. It was too spongy. Not smooth like others I've had. Customer Service: The cashier (maybe owner) was very sweet and I got my food real fast! Oh yeah, DON'T FORGET CASH! :) read more

Take It Easy - Tofu Jungle Curry - Thai Near Me - Oakland, California

It's not the greatest, but not the worst. I wanted to get something in my stomach before the A's game and I was waiting for a friend to clock out. I could have gotten pizza, a burrito, or fried chicken. I stumbled in and it was quiet. I ordered the Pad See Ew, with tofu instead of meat so I can feel a bit less guilty about a stadium hot dog at the game. It wasn't the best rendition - but it was loaded with tofu and broccoli and I can taste the sweet soy sauce on the noodles. A little siracha made it better - I ate it piping hot. Take it Easy is a certainly a humble spot - and I think a majority of their business is lunch hour. I'd come where when I'm drinking at the bar nearby. read more

Not sure how they are still in business. The food is quite bad the atmosphere is worse. I've eaten there a couple of times. Everything I've ordered felt soggy, over cooked or not flavored well. So today I called on my way home from Bart and ordered food for pick up. The BF and I tried Take It Easy on Saturday and I recalled that food was delicious, the portions were huge(each entree comes with rice and is easily enough for 2 meals), and all entrees are under $7. Since I'm on a budget today I had to keep these things in mind. It was a little difficult to understand the gentleman who answered the phone (reception, accent, and street noise are together a poor combo) but even though it was crazy busy he was patient with me until we got my order right. I ordered Chicken Coconut Curry- no green beans or carrots. I arrived 5 minutes later and added two cans of soda to my order, gave him a dollar tip and did it all with tax incl for $10. It took an additional 5 minutes before my order was ready and I had a pleasant chat with a gent in suit and tie out front with Madison tied to a gate and making "poor puppy" eyes at all the business ladies walking by and leaving the restaurant. There are 7 or 8 places to get quick decent food in that one block stretch of 17th. Take It Easy gets an extra star from me for being open till 8pm and on Saturdays unlike most of its neighbors. When my food was ready the owner brought it out to me even though he had a full house because he had noticed I was keeping an eye on my K9 pal- 1.25 stars for that, I love dog friendly places! When I got home my food was perfect, and once again enough for two meals! I was pleased to see that there were no carrots or green beans as I requested, and they had put more of everything else, including chicken! I really like their curries. They even have a Jungle Curry my BF just loves. Other favorites are their Cashew Chicken and BBQ plates. I have of course had better Thai food before. But this place does not pretend to be something it's not. It's set up Taqueria/ bistro style. Their intention is to be quality "fast" food for the business people and residents of uptown and downtown Oakland- so those people can order, eat, and leave in 30 minutes or less. And it does etremely good at surpassing that goal. This is what throws people off. It's too good to be most peoples' idea of fast food so they fail to realize that when they order and then compare it to popular full service/ full menu Thai food restaurants. That is why I gave them 5 stars, they are so good at what they do you almost forget it's fast food. By the way you have to try the Thai Egg rolls (may be called something else but essentially they're egg rolls) and the deep fried sweet potato triangles (absoluetly not the right name ;-) SO YUMMY!!! read more

The tamarind spareribs hits the spot. Falls of the bone. Great Thai food served hot and fresh.

DO NOT eat here for any reason. My friend and I ate here because I had *just* had Vietnamese food, so I talked her out of Pho 84. I must publicly apologize to her now, because the food at Take it Easy was so bad that we left without finishing, and then lay around moaning and clutching our stomachs for the rest of the evening. I mean, I had to have two Manhattans just to distract my stomach from that nasty after taste. The Pad Thai was covered in a brown gravy, the vegetables all tasted like they were from a can, and the chicken.... actually, I can't talk about the chicken. Having only just eaten it last night, the trauma is still too fresh - UNLIKE the ingredients at this restaurant. read more

A seemingly viable option among the various quick after-work-hours Asian dining establishments in the welcoming alcove that is 17th between Webster and Franklin; cause as you know, after 6pm - Up/Downtown O' doesn't provide the hungry diner with a whole lotta choices. But don't be fooled by TAKE IT EASY! I've been curious about this place; riding by on my bike in the morning on my way to work (down the street) or walking by at lunch-time - It always seems to be hopping with patrons chatting happily over their billowing steamy plates of plentiful noodles, tofu, meats and veggies; giving their smiles a wet sauna before treating their stomachs to a spa treatment of a meal! Takin' it easy, alright. And besides, how could you NOT be curious about a Thai place with a name like TAKE IT EASY? The name beckons, right? OK, we went to it with hopeful expectations - but kind of already let down since we couldn't have our first choice of Vietnamese food at Pho 84 directly across the street, which is closed for renovation. Bummer. But TAKE IT EASY was inviting and I was getting hungry. The friendly and kind gentleman behind the register that greeted us was already a good sign. And I immediately appreciated the convenience and lack of pretension given by a restaurant where you order at the register, pay, and then have it brought out to you by a server. But econo-style packaging that likens such a venue to Carls' Jr. can of course be a bad omen too. We weren't let down yet! There were still promising signs in that Friendly Cash Register Man warned us that the JUNGLE CURRY TOFU AND VEGGIES that we ordered is made sans coconut milk and that it is spi-i-i-i-cy. "Alright", I tell myself, "It's on. I can warm to this." Sounds promising, right? ** Before I go into the big let down portion of the review - interjection: It could be a regional Thai cuisine thing, but all of the Thai places I've been to always have 'pra-ram' (peanut sauce) selections on the menu, as well as green curry selections. To me, these seem to be staples (along with the traditional Pad Thai) of Thai fare. Please correct me if you know better. TAKE IT EASY has a lot on their menu, but not these particular items.** And so begin the let-downs. The veggie pad Thai and the above mentioned jungle curry wound up tasting watered down and flavorless. The tighter textured tofu which I prefer (vs. softer varieties) ended up being rigid to a fault. Chewy with a too-tough casing style batter. The limp vegetables lacked freshness and flavor and the curry lacked its alleged jungly-oomph-ness. Finally a pad Thai that wasn't overly greasy! But dude, sometimes it's the grease that adds richness to these noodles; that in this case were bland and weak. Too much ginger in my opinion. Sure, the plates came out to our table STEAMY McDreamy for sure (and quick..! 5 minutes, tops), as I'd seen previously through fogged windows. However, through the entire duration of the meal, the food mysteriously maintained its steaminess - radioactively almost - but ironically, was not hot. Dub Tee Eff? I interpret that the special effect can be attributed to the microwave oven, cause it didn't seem like it was fresh off the grill pan. Who knows. They apparently took it TOO easy on the flavor, quality and freshness here. The entire affair ended up having the taste similar to that of having tried to cook it at home ourselves; with the feeling that a good Thai restaurant could have done it a lot better. 1/3 star for being open after 5 1/3 star for the affordability factor 1/3 star for the quick service 1 redeeming star for being really friendly and inviting Perhaps on another day, maybe as I'm taking a sunny walk by at lunch and I peer in to see smiling, happy faces over steaming food - I'll be tempted to come back. Not too soon though! read more

i haven't been hear in years but this place is popular with people from work and its always busy! Maybe i order the wrong things but the Drunken Noodles seem to be popular along with their basil chicken....neither item i was wowed about...tasty but not something id crave again. Not sure what it is....the basil chicken was more of a dry fry so there wasn't any sauce but they were generous with the basil. The drunken noodles had lots of fresh bean sprouts topped with rice noodles, mushrooms, basil which i smothered with condiments and Sriacha...something was missing for me. I'll try again as this place is reasonably priced with nice portions and an array of items on their menu. read more

I seem to have the habit of trying something on a restaurant's menu and then having only that thing for the next 5 years. This was my lunch spot (after a fellow coworker recommended it to me) when I was still an INTERN at Forte Software, located on the 1800 harrison block not too far from this place. This must be gosh 8 years ago?! Well for the next 8 years, I have been going there whenever I could (meaning whenever I am anywhere near the vicinity of Oakland downtown). There's only 1 item I order from the menu - Drunken Noodle. There's nothing else like this dish that I have tasted anywhere else. It's like pad thai noodles but with a completely different sauce - I wouldn't even call it a sauce, it's a combo of soy and spices and whatever else, and the result is addictingly delicious. I get the beef and tofu combo drunken noodle and a thai ice tea. The owner knows me extremely well after all these years and I never have to tell him what I am ordering, so he always fix it up for me really good and a huge portion as well. I like it spicy but you can order it mild or what not. Just try this dish, you won't regret it. I know the other reviews aren't so good due to other stuff on their menu or the owner's attitude during busy lunch hours - they have no waitor only busboys, and he can get a bit nasty. But go during slightly offpeak hours and order the drunken noodle. Omg writing this is making my mouth water. read more

2 basil tofu medium spicy. The guy at the cash register knows us when we chant this familiar phrase into the phone. Usually we are rolling by on the way home from work and picking up to take home. I've been there twice. They are cash only. No signs indicate this. The owner will see you standing there with your card out and ignore it until you've placed your order. (Want tofu? They only have it deep-fried. You can't have it steamed, or even just raw, only deep-fried.) So now you order (not tofu) and the owner will glance again at your card, say "cash only", and silently point to the ATM machine he's installed behind you that's going to charge you $2.25 for cash. Okaaaay. You order at the counter, get your own utensils and napkins, and seat yourself. The only service they provide is to bring the food to the table. No one will ever ask you how everything is, because no one cares. Want water? Back to the counter to ask. While waiting for our lunch, I see the little old lady whose job it is to deliver the food sneeze into her cupped hands. Something must have sprayed out, because she wipes both hands all over the front of her apron. She does not go wash her hands. Instead she hangs out, staring into space, until our lunch is ready. Then she brings us our curries with her thumbs hooked over the edge of the bowls, a good inch deep. Why do I eat it anyway? Because this happens all the damn time in restaurants, we just don't usually SEE it happen. The food is okay. Very average curry. In retrospect, the fact that Take It Easy doesn't even try to feign interest in customers or compliance with general standards of cleanliness is probably a bad sign....if they do this in the front of the house, what sort of atrocities happen in the back? read more

Whoa whoa whoa... take IT easy guys. Why does the name capitalize "IT"? Does "IT" stand for something? Are they emphasizing "it"? What is it? This place is not good, in my opinion. There are much better options. I've eaten here many times over the years and I always regret it. Some points: They use crappy cheap products (should just be called "Sysco Thai") Meats taste defrosted and are odd cheap cuts. They only take cash The food tastes like it is made with little care or passion and lacks rich flavor. It is cheap, but you get what you pay for. There is much much better food close by. The restaurant is exposed by tall windows on the corner of the street. As I entered the door there is a man standing behind a cash register beside the open kitchen. I ordered the tofu curry ($6.47) from a non-hospitable guy who responded, "No card, cash only". He crudely directed me to an ATM at a nearby coffee shop. The ATM charges $3 for with drawl. I sat at a table with number card in hand. Sine it was lunchtime it was pretty busy. Not a lot of asian people, but Oakland business types. The place has a coffee shop feel even though it's a restaurant. It can seat around 30. The interior is bright and the use of mirrors helps it out a lot. A worker brought me my steaming plate of food. I was surprised by it's portions. Pretty sizable for a curry rice dish. I dug right in for I was craving something to warm me up from the rainy weather. My first reaction to this dish was "yum???". It tasted good at first, but then I didn't really know what to make of it. The tofu curry consisted of: sliced tofu, white rice, curry, broccoli, and chopped spring beans. I loved the fact that it had a lot of vegetables in the dish. The veggies tasted fresh and crisp. But what was up with the curry sauce? It reminds me of mac 'n cheese. It was creamy, but not in a curry sort of way; more like Velveeta with a hint of curry. If you're not into spicy curry, this is your best bet. This is the weirdest curry I've had and I eat a lot of curry, Indian, Thai, Chinese, etc. The second worst part of the dish was the Tofu. The tofu was sliced to medium sized rectangles. It felt like I was chewing on dry sponges with non of that delicious subtle tofu flavor. I didn't get to finish the dish because of its shear size. I packed it in a Chinese togo box. As bad as the food was i still don't like to waste food. As I left the restaurant I felt a bit sick and really confused. I sure wasn't taking it easy. I was in town for work and asked my client if he wanted to go to a local spot for lunch. He suggested here. It was a short walk from the office on a beautiful day in NorCal. It's hole in the wall, the line was out the door and it was packed inside. The food was great, I asked them to make mine hot and they had no problem doing just that. The proportions were generous. The neighborhood around here is ok, no problem during the day for sure. Overall it was a great experince. was thinking of japanese food, but they only had one patron, so i ordered takeout here, lemon grass beef(6,50) & chicken jungle curry(5.95) chiang mai's jungle curry has coconut milk, this place doesn't. the -food was ready in five minutes. pros: cheap, fast service food passable. cons: -the lemongrass in both dishes was coarsely cut. since it doesn't "meltdown" upon cooking, it's an obstacle to fine dining. imagine biting into this and you say "WTF". worse even if you swallowed it. the lemongrass should have been finely cut, it wasn't. -i would consider the large pieces of lemongrass a potential health hazard for those who swallow their food without chewing. read more

Food: Judging from the Pad Thai and Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles) this place is slightly below the standard I prefer. The Pad Thai is a lot sweeter than I'm accustomed to and the beef isn't very substantial. The noodles had a darker, brownish tint, which is also different, but actually tasty. Also, they didn't include a piece of lime. Lime is crucial for Pad Thai IMO. I know I could've asked, but from the many times I've been here, it seems 'no lime' is the default. And don't get me started with the Kee Mao. They use the same thin Pad Thai noodles for the Kee Mao... uh.... That just isn't right. Not at all. Service: The gent who's always behind the counter is nice and the ladies are always smiling and pleasant. Oh yeah, it's OTC. Oh yeah, and CASH ONLY!!! Value: Actually pretty cheap. read more

I'm not sure that you can classify what I just ate as Thai food. It was a mish-mash of different types of poorly cooked chicken, beef, and seafood that was drenched in a flavorless curry sauce over white rice. It lacked any sort of soul whatsoever. What's worse, I had to pay cash for it. For some reason, paying cash makes it seem that much more cruel. Anyways, the ONLY upside is that it's cheap. Otherwise, do yourself the favor and walk the extra half a block to Davan Thai were you get much better quality of Thai at the same prices AND where they'll happily take your plastic. read more

I walked by Take It Easy and decided to give it a try. I was there on a weekday, so there were a lot of people there for lunch. Their menu had a lot of choices. A good option for lunch. Clean, inexpensive and generous portions. For these prices, you would expect them to have a steam table full of pre-made items, but everything is made to order by little old ladies in the open kitchen. They'll even let you watch.... if that's what your into. I've been here a number of times, ordering different dishes. Today I had the old failthful, basil chicken. It's tasty food you shove in your face at lunch and leave... nothing too memorable. One tip: Medium spicy is not consistent. I've had different levels from "just right" to "sweaty brow". read more

Take it Easy Thai is more definitely a 3.5 star joint. This is definitely not super authentic, top of the line Thai food, but they do a few dishes really well--and I think in a way that IS authentic and homestyle. If you ask for it spicey, their spicey drunken noodles are VERY, VERY SPICEY-- and really delicious. Perfectly cooked, not rubbery, very fresh. Excellent flavor, as well. It's important that they actually execute for real spiciness when you ask for that, rather than some Americanized version of throwing a jalapeno in the sauce and calling that "spicey." Their pork curry is good, too, very homestyle and comforting, and the vegetables are always firm, never soggy. I pretty much lived on this curry when I was pregnant with my (1/4 Thai) twins. I've enjoyed their golden triangles in the past, too. I think the trick with this place is you have to know what to order and stick with that. read more

Came here for a surprise lunch, and got an extra surprise by actually how decent this food is for the area. Granted it caters to the quick business lunch, but does a decent job of making it tasty and filling. Note it is good food, not necessarily good Thai food (because its not really close to the traditional Thai) Got the Duck with Asparagus, and the Duck Egg Noodles (ooo i love duck). The strips of duck with its fatty layer, meat, and skin were pretty generous for this sized meal. The asparagus dish was decently spicy, and quite tasty. Flavors are typical, but the portion is good for a large lunch at a cheap price. The egg noodles were another surprise as tasty and had enough duck plus some tasty veggies. The food comes pretty fast for your on-the-go worker, and the colorful inside brightens up this somewhat drab neighborhood. Definitely a place to try for your lunch break and will keep most of your paycheck in the back. And if they give you the choice of egg noodles...go with it! read more

My wife ordered me pad see ew - beef to go. Opened up the food container & notice more than half my dish is burnt. Even the flat noodles were slightly crispy and wrinkly burnt. Broccoli was burnt so bad that you almost can't figure what it was that you're looking at. I had to go back to return this food. The older gentleman that was the cashier gave me an cold stare & said the food wasn't burnt. The lady cook came over said nothing so I opened the container and showed them both and also stated there's 3 strand of hairs tucked & cooked onto the noodle, broccoli, & beef which I lift it out with the fork. The old gentleman cashier tried to have me keep quiet since there's customers in the seating area and opened the cash register and gave me my refund. I will not be going back but take your chances. read more

I really don't understand why so many people line up here for lunch. I've tried this place a few times, and I was never impressed with their food and disgusted a few times. Their pad thai (first dish i'll try at any thai place) was ... just NOT pad thai. The noodles were flaky and the flavor was just weird - not like any pad thai I have ever tasted. I mean, the flavoring was just gross, not just different. My asian coworkers agree, while one of my non-asian coworker likes it anyway, but he has never had pad thai elsewhere. Maybe all the people who keep coming here have never tried real thai food? At the request of my coworkers, I have gone back a couple more times and tried a couple other dishes, but nothing stuck out as good. I was happy when thai corner was around, then sad when they closed down. But now there's DaVan just down the street on Webster that has great thai food for cheap! One other thing, this place only takes cash even though there aren't any signs that say so. read more

The food is good, but the guy at the front desk is rude so don't expect amazing service. For some reason you can't order to go if you're eating at the "restaurant" - I knew I wasn't going to be able to finish everything so I figured I'd save them some effort by not having to wash a plate but apparently that's not okay. I ordered the "Drunken Noodles" with Chicken. It was good, and the portions are generous. However - what's a Thai place with no jalapenos or spicy chili sauce condiments? To add to the shitty service, they kicked us out as soon as we finished our plates because other customers were waiting for a seat. 1 star for the service, 4 stars for the food. read more
