The sashimi was good and fresh and the sushi was well prepared. But it wasn't really extraordinary and it was relatively expensive. From what I noticed the menu is the same from Tuesday to Thursday and then they have a separate menu for Friday to Sunday. I definitely recommend this place. Service was really good and the food was coming out pretty fast. The sushi and the fried stuff were to our liking. We had to call to get reservations because they don't have a website but when we went it seemed like ppl were coming in without reservations The only bad thing about this place was the ice cream, I got the green tea ice cream but it has a powdery feeling/ taste. My go to sushi place Park was closed until early January. I use to dine at Sakura back in the day but hoped for the best. Since many legacy restaurent has the same staff and cleniness from the 1990. I called days in advance to see what interesting options they would have for new years eve. The lady mentioned Toro, Hamachi and Uni. Only order otoro sushi and Matsu sashimi combo. I arrived at 10 minutes early just to make everything was smooth. There was only one person in from of me. There was four staff and no one acoknowedege the two customers for 15 minutes. Two staff was preparing the food and the other two was walking or standing around doing nothing. When the male waiter finally spoke to me, it took him 10 minutes to find my food that was already prepared before my arrival. I understand it is NYE but my order was already prepared well in advance and i have less then a few hours for me to have dinner and then return to my hotel due to the 10 pm curfew. When I opened it looks like a 14 year kid prepared it. The sushimi looked butchered and cut with a dull knife but sushi looked ok. The oToro sushi broke in half when it was picked up with my chopstick. It tasted ok Then the horor show begins. only the salmon (sake) , makeral (saba) tasted fresh. ALL THE OTHER sushimi where the leftover end pieces from the fish. They tasted very fishy and looks like the end of day special at a supermarket. It was founded at a time when the average Montrealer had very little knowledge of authentic Japanese food, which is why Sakura feels both old school and Westernized. Among its most unique and traditionnal features, however, is the kaiseki, a multi-course dinner where each dish follows a sequence where esthetics and balance are at play. The guide book mentioned that among famous patrons of the restaurant was Prime Minister Trudeau senior. Apparently, young Justin Trudeau had also enjoyed his family meals there, as he recently cited Sakura as one of his favorite spots in Montreal. At the center of this restaurant is "Mamasan", the owner, a gracious lady rumored never to take a day off. When I first visited the place with friends 3 years ago, she was indeed there, overseeing the dining room. The dinner service was pleasant and courteous, and the room quiet and intimate. The food was nicely prepared and presented. We had a great meal. My colleagues and I visited the place for lunch three times since then. The "special of the day" was my favorite pick, as it was both affordable and delicious. Our last visit (May 2016), however, was perplexing. I ordered the special of the day, which was a tuna bowl. The food came after quite a long wait, and, well, the tuna wasn't fresh. The meat had been breaded and fried, then soaked in sauce until it was mushy. It wasn't very Japanese, which was embarassing because we were welcoming a Japanese professor (he had ordered the same dish). I wondered if there had been some change in the kitchen. La façon cavalière dont l assistant gérant nous a pratiquement montré la porte est inacceptable. Un sérieux manque de jugement et de tact. Nous fréquentons régulièrement des restaurants de Montréal et de Laval, et jamais -- je dis bien jamais -- nous n'avons été traités de cette façon. Everything was truly exquisite. For this evening, we spent close to $400, and from a culinary standpoint, the experience met expectations. Unfortunately, the service completely ruined the evening. The cavalier manner in which the assistant manager practically showed us the door is unacceptable. A serious lack of judgment and tact. We regularly visit restaurants in Montreal and Laval, and never -- I repeat, never -- have we been treated this way. Being rushed like that in front of our guests, during a birthday celebration, is frankly humiliating. We felt ashamed of the situation. At 6:00 p.m., we certainly did not expect to have to cut our evening short. The message was clear: "Eat, spend, and free the table quickly -- other customers are waiting." An establishment that positions itself as a high-end experience cannot afford such a lack of respect. Never again. Review based on our personal experience, honest and factual.
