Everything was tasty. This was my first time trying pani puri and it was very refreshing and flavorful. The samosa was crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and packed with flavor. The gulab jamin was phenomenal, sweet, sticky, warm, and very delicious. The chile chicken was tasty and well cooked, the goat was extremely tender and flavorful, and the potato dish was very good. I tried a little bit of everything and only found myself not quite enjoying the vegetable fried rice, the butter chicken, and the pickles (I think it was a pickled lemon rind). As far as the chutneys go, the tamarind and onion were impeccable. The chai was also very good. It was great that the sugar was self-serve to preference. This place was fantastic! My husband, two friends and I got the lunch buffet. So many wonderful options including butter chicken, chicken curry, chana masala, saag paneer and yellow rice. You also can order off the menu if you like. The flavors were wonderful, and we all enjoyed it. I cannot have any gluten, and the owner was so knowledgeable and helpful in making sure I did not choose any dishes off the buffet that contained gluten. The ambiance of the restaurant is quiet, calming, clean and decorated well. We'll be going back and recommend it. This is not on the main strip but behind the Sonic on Burkhardt. Atmosphere is tidy and on-brand. The tall skinny guy working has taken care of us both times we've been there recently and he is attentive, kind, and knows the menu well. He was extra kind and accommodating to my 2 year old. Today we went there for the buffet, but they don't serve it on mondays. (Tuesday through Sunday for anyone wondering) But, they do serve a large plate with 6 segments of your choice between entree and sides, so we still got a good variety. You also get naan and three chutneys (mint, tamarind, onion) Always get a mango lassi because it's our favorite. I suggest trying it out. Taj Mahal is a restaurant I used to go to all the time when I lived here before. We finally went this weekend after moving back last year. One reason for the delay in going is it always looked closed or empty (the other reason is we have unadventurous kids). I feel the bar for good food, in this area is really low or we are "too picky". After seeing a few recent really promising reviews we decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint. The food was delicious. It's been 3 days and I'm still talking about how good it was. We eat early, see kids, so we were the only ones there when we arrived. Others came later and it does seem they do quite a bit of takeout. We had the paneer pakora, garlic naan, shrimp biryani, butter chicken and saag paneer. All the food was seasoned perfectly and to the level of heat we asked for, midwest white people mild. I don't want to sweat when I eat. What I love about Indian food is the sharing factor. I love being able to get multiple items to share. The portion sizes were great for this (not too small and not overwhelming) and the pricing was really fair as well. I look forward to going back sooner than later. read more

Great experiences at Taj Mahal. I am in town for a work trip, and have eaten here twice. I plan to go back tomorrow, so make it three. So far I have ordered Kadai Paneer, Dal Makhani, Raiti, and the Special Papri Chat. The dishes are cooked well and have lots of flavor! The servers are friendly and take pride in the food they bring you. Great job Taj Mahal! *Update* - I came back for thirds, this time getting the Saag Paneer with Poori bread. The buffet selection is outstanding. Lots of variety and even freshly made raita, which I love. There is room for improvement however. The tandoori chicken has a stickiness to it, almost like barbecue chicken. The coating should be much drier. Also it needs more spiciness. The naan was more like a tough cracker. It should be pleasantly chewy. I would recommend this place though and will go back, given the opportunity. read more

We have been here 4 times so far. It is family owned, which is nice, but sometimes the wait to order is pretty long even if they aren't busy. The food is usually good. Some of the food is similar in taste. Only had one issue which was the last time we have been, my boyfriend loves spicy so tried level 6 and I like a little spice at level 2. They switched the heat levels and my food was level 6 while his was level 3. I don't like to complain so we just switched and I suffered through the heat. The food was delicious! We got the chicken tikka masala and another dish, the portions are small, but surprisingly filing; probably because these dishes are heavy. Our server always seemed so rush whenever he came to check on our table; but he did fill our water a few times without asking so that was nice. Although I'm not in Evansville all that often, I've been to Taj Mahal plenty of times. I love Indian food and have many restaurants where I live. So, with only one restaurant here in Evansville, I wasn't expecting anything extraordinary. Luckily, I've been pleasantly surprised by Taj Mahal and regularly dine there. The first thing I'll mention is that the spice level is a bit higher than at other Indian restaurants I've been to. Keep this in mind while you are ordering or you may find your food a bit too spicy. As with most Indian restaurants, there are tons of vegetarian options. Some of the ones that Taj Mahal does best include the Dal Makhani, Punjabi Curry, Dal Tadka and Aloo Gobi. They also have a selection of chaat items in the appetizers, these are very good and are a great start to the meal. We've done lunch buffet, dinner and carryout on various occasions. The food quality in all instances has been well above par across the menu. The buffet has a somewhat limited selection, caters to vegetarians and non-vegetarians and also keeps all the items pretty fresh. I'd say the quality of the buffet seemed to be similar to the dine-in experience for us. The interior is really clean, bright and spacious with the ability to accommodate larger groups easily. There are high ceilings, plenty of windows and a luxurious (non-functional) bar. The service is polite and the wait times for food are very reasonable. Of particular note, they are incredibly accommodating for food modifications. As an example, my husband was craving aloo gobi without the gobi one night and the staff obliged without question. The food here is solidly good and anytime we have a craving for Indian food, Taj Mahal always hits the spot. read more

I've been to TM about 5-10 times over the last decade. Initially when it opened they had good service and good food. I hadn't been in a few years and decided to try it again. We were taken to a table by a woman who kept telling us "No English, no English". If I remember correctly, there used to be more English speaking people working there. I don't know. It was difficult trying to order drinks. We ordered the buffet, or rather just got started on it bc no one came around. They only have the "lunch buffet" Friday-Sunday now and it's $17.99!! It is mostly vegetarian, which is fine, but my husband eats meat and the only meat (remember, this is an $18 LUNCH buffet) was butter chicken and tandoori chicken. We were there about 1:00 and there was only 1 piece of tandoori chicken. My husband didn't take it bc it looked dried out. The bar needed restocked in general, things stirred. The food we ate was good. Great flavors. Unfortunately, I won't pay $18 for a lunch buffet that isn't well-stocked. Maybe for a dinner buffet with more choices. I know Covid and inflation, etc., but for a lunch buffet in Evansville, $18 is way too much. Moonlite BBQ charges that much in Owensboro for their lunch buffet and it has 8 different meats, about 8 vegetables, a full salad bar, and dessert bar, and the service is good. I just can't go back. First off, they have a beautiful bar and dining area (which is worth at least 2 stars right there). Their food is very good. Which is what I would expect of an Indian place in Evansville because they are not a chain. The best time to eat here is during lunch (when they have the buffet). Dine-in and takeout are a little expensive ($10-13). The buffet is around $8. Their booze situation is not anything great. When I was looking, I don't think they serve the mega popular beers (like bud light) on tap, which is rare in Evansville. With that said, the "craft" beers on tap are made by the same company. However, they have a decent enough wine selection and a few Indian beers that could be rather enjoyable with dinner. A funny situation... When the waiter asked how spicy I wanted my lamb dish, (1-6) I said 4 (medium hot). He told me no. I was surprised and asked why. He said Americans can't handle medium hot and he kept suggesting that I have 1 or 2. I ordered 3 (I know...I am such a nonconformist). He was correct, if I had gotten 4 then the spicy would have overwhelmed the other flavors. I have never had a waiter tell me outright 'no' when I wanted to order something. This time the customer was not right and I am glad the waiter told me. Overall, solid 4 rating.
