The cute restaurant was empty, but people picked up their orders or for delivery. The staff gave me a snack that had fennel seeds and was a savory snack while I waited for my order. So sweet. My lunch special was $13 and included chutney, tomato soup, meat samosa, and curry lamb entree with naan and rice. I think it's a pretty good deal. I really enjoyed their rice which is basmati with fennel seeds; this adds so much jazz to the rice. The naan was nice and soft. This place just sits in the corner of Grand Street and have lunch specials! Their lunch specials are what attracted me to this place. I got the chicken lunch special at $12.95 pre tax which comes with chicken tikka masala, one vegetable samosa, naan, soup, saffron rice, and 3 difference chutneys for dipping. The chicken tikka masala had a lot of seasoning and a lot of sauce. The chicken was very fresh, chewy, and chunky. I love the chutneys which made everything better. The naan was very soft and warm and easy to chew. The samosa was very starchy in my opinion filled with a lot of potato. Overall the meal was very affordable with a lot of appetizers to go along with the chicken tikka masala meal. read more

What a gem! Stumbled in here on a cold winter day and was delighted we had the place to ourselves since it was a weird time of day (2pm). It pains me to write this review as I have always enjoyed their takeout. I decided to dine in recently and while i enjoyed my food - somewhat- I dont trust how my food is being prepared. My family came in to an empty restaurant on a weekday around dinner time. There were no other diners in the restaurant but it seemed like a lot of orders were going out for delivery. I ordered a prefixe menu item with naan, curry chicken, samosas, rice and salmon. It was a great deal. We were served from metal silverware. They kept our water filled with cold water which was nice. After we ordered we were given complimentary soup that we didnt care for. Our main courses arrived and over the white rice lay a single 2 inch long black hair. We called over the server. When he came over, we showed him the hair and he tried to take the bowl back to the kitchen and we asked him to leave it there and bring us a fresh bowl. Once that was rectified, we ate our meal - inspecting every bite and once we were done we we tried to call over the server; who was busy folding napkins and picking his nose. The check could not have come faster. Came with my mom on a Saturday evening we were the only ones there up until like 20 mins when someone went to pick up and order they had placed. They greeted us upon arrival and told us to sit anywhere we like to. The restaurant is cute and quaint. However, they don't play any music which I found odd bc it would definitely be nice to listen to something in the background besides the workers. They gave us some chutneys (pickled onions, tamarind sauce, and a green spicy sauce) all good served with some crispy flat bread almost like a tortilla. We ordered chicken samosas and a vegetable soup which was very creamy and hearty. The garlic naan definitely tasted fresh however it didn't taste garlicky enough just like plain pita bread with a bit of oil and garlic on top. The samosas were a bit over fried but tasty. We got chicken tiki masala with rice to share and to drink we got a mago lassi which was delicious and creamy and just delightful and a Indian spiced tea which was good too on a chilly Saturday which had rained all day. Food was excellent! Seriously some of the best butter chicken I've had. The restaurant itself was nice with a lot of tables and clean, however it was awfully quiet which made me uneasy. The service was good, they included a complementary appetizer that was very delicious. My only complaint was that at the end of the meal I couldn't get the leftovers to go since I was on my way to a concert and the manager seemed upset and asked if we thought the food was bad. I ordered delivery from here late at night (around midnight) on a weekday when almost everything else that seemed decent was closed. Let me say I am so glad I took the chance. This is one of the best Indian meals I've ever had. Both dishes we ordered, the chana saag and the lamb vindaloo, were super flavorful and had all the right spices. The garlic naan was soft and just the right size and right amount of garlic. The chana saag is definitely the best spinach dish I've had so far at an Indian restaurant. Considering the distance to where I was, they delivered the food pretty quickly. The food was so authentic and had such a great taste. They bring everything so quickly and really have amazing service. They also give you nachos with three different sides that you can eat them with. Its a small cozy spot that you would enjoy. I love Papadum now. We tried the Chicken Bengal which is great if you want smooth, not spicy. Aloo Matar Gobi, is great. Flavorful and satisfying. What I really loved was the Taj Special Grilled Chicken. It's packed with wonderful flavor. I was afraid of the price, but it's enough chicken for 2 easily. They cook it tender and juicey with the perfect amount of spices for anyone. Get the sag Paneer. Don't try and skimp by getting the spinach appetizer instead. The sag paneer is much better. Keema paratha was in poori dough, exactly like the bland cheese poori I ordered. Biryani House special was really a fried rice dish - no shrimp to be found. Used to be beautiful white rice with big shrimp and pieces of other meats and vegetables. This was all brown, mixed together, and greasy. Chicken korma was not sweet or flavorful. There were some shining star dishes that I would reorder (Peshwari Naan was delicious and inhaled immediately with the Mango Chutney, the Mango Lassi was perfect - not too sweet and nicely balanced, thr Shrimp Shahi Korma was a surprise delight, the Samosas were beautifully crisp and the raita was surprisingly thick and a nice addition). The rest of what I ordered was good and upon second taste, the spice from the Mushroom saag (waaay too spicy for my liking) carried over to the Sag paneer - the Sag wasn't as spicy as I had originally thought and there must've been turmeric or something that changed the color - not tomato based as I thought at first. I feel so mixed about this place. I've been ordering from Taj Kabab for years now. It used to be the only Indian place that delivered to me, but over the years several other Indian restaurants have popped up in the area. Taj Kabab stands out from these others in both good and bad ways... The good: You get more food for your money here. Like when I order their dinner special, I usually end up with enough food for like 3 meals. The flavors overall are usually pretty good. The other Indian restaurants' dinner specials come with significantly less food. The bad: Their food is consistently excessively greasy with pools of orange oil covering most dishes. Why?? And pretty much every time they deliver my order, there is something missing (appetizers, drinks, and most often sauces/chutneys). This is so consistent, it's a running joke with my roommate. In conclusion, other Indian options are probably healthier/less oily, but if you're kinda broke and want A LOT of food for your money, Taj Kabab delivers. read more

We went here tonight with our friend and we are still talking about how good the food was! We ordered onion naan, Peshwari naan(our friend ordered this because it's his favorite, and I was pleasantly surprised how tasty this slightly sweet naan is!), Chana masala, bhindi masala and aloo saag. Chana masala was so good especially with some onion topping, bhindi masala had a nice, rich flavor with caramelized onions, aloo saag was mild but with rich flavor.
