I've always had a sweet spot for independent coffee shops, especially ones who are open late and where they are open to people sitting and studying for a bit so ever since TAJ opened up, I have been meaning to check them out to see whether it's more of a study place or more of a desert lounge or hangout spot for people who don't want to go to a bar but want somewhere nicer than Starbucks to meet and socialize. It's kind of a combination of all 3 and I saw people studying, people bringing their family, and friends hanging out. First the good- it's a nice clean place with cute decor. They also have a very large selection of middle eastern pastries and deserts that you don't find in other places and a decent savory menu if you don't want your A1C to shoot up too high. You go and order and they'll bring your food, drink, or desert to you if it's something that needs to be prepared. It's a nice touch that gives it that upscale feeling. I'm not sure if they are actually wait staff that can take your order too or they just multi-task as order takers at the counter, prepare the food, clean tables, or what. Of course, for all the nice environment they provide, they charge a little more than say the Seattle corporate chain that shall not be named again but it's worth it and I totally get it. The part that I don't get is that when I ordered hot tea and I went to the counter with the sweeteners and such, I didn't see any other milk or creamer - fresh or otherwise. When I asked one the above mentioned waiters who was walking by if I could have some, I was told "We don't do that ". In fact, he almost looked offended that I would ask such a thing . I'd completely understand the lack of milk or creamer if I were sitting in a bazaar in Tehran, a tea house in Istanbul but I was in Houston, Texas, so denying a splash of dairy felt like a bizarre, unnecessary hill to die on. Also, besides the gentleman with the beard, nobody else was smiling or seemed approachable and after the tea incident and asking for the wifi password and again seeming to offend another person by asking, I didn't want to bother them that the wifi was not working. Even after I connected to the right SSID (it's the VIP one, not the Guest), internet was down so I had to use my own hotspot. Anyway, I hope this was a misunderstanding because I have to have something to cool off my tea or coffee and if it's ok for Captain Picard to put milk in his Earl Grey tea, then I feel like I'm in good company too and I really would like to try them again at some point. If I can't even put milk in my coffee or tea then I don't see that happening. Edit: After seeing the response on the tea, I really thought it was a misunderstanding but this is going to be a dealbreaker for me. It's one thing to serve the tea without anything added to it but to prevent a grown adult from adding it to their tea and making it the way they like is just a bit much. read more

It's a cute cafe spot. The patio has seating and the outdoor side was decorated with some plants that gave it a serene vibe. When you walk in you immediately feel like this is an upscale cafe. The lights, decor, and simplicity of everything. They had so many different desserts and pastries. If you love knafeh this is the place for you. The service was also great they brought my order to me. Many tables and even a comfortable seat. I tried the mango milk cake which is basically a Turkish tres lechee cake. The mango was fresh and delicious. I also tried a few dessert pastries like pistachio bow tie that one was a thick bite and a little flaky. Happy to have people in my life that introduce me new places that slip under my foodie radar. Taj A Sweet Cafe was new to me until recently. It's a cute cafe off Westheimer, near the Galleria. It's tucked away in a little shopping center and parking was plentiful. They specialize in Arabic and Turkish sweets, but you can't help but notice they have a great coffee program too. It's a small cafe, but seems to have plenty of seating and cute little nooks to just lounge and hang with your peeps. I was overwhelmed with the amount of items they had to choose from but the staff was very friendly and happy to help. I did a little research before heading over and saw that their specialty drinks were big hits. I ended up with the Biscoff Cloud. I don't usually gravitate toward iced drinks nor dessert type drinks, but I love Biscoff and had to try this. It took awhile to arrive at my table, but the wait paid off. This drink was exactly what I wanted it to be. I was expecting a sugar rush, but it came with three espresso shots which balanced out the sweetness. I could actually taste the quality coffee used. It had little bites of cookie inside which was a nice textural contrast. I also wanted to get a light bite and went with the beef fatira pie. This was a soft bread with a meat filling. It was packed with flavor. It was good, but it was a little too tangy for my liking. They also have a huge variety of pastries like baklava and items that I had never seen before. Overall, Taj A Sweet hit the spot. I will most definitely be back to check out some of their sweets next time and try some of their other coffee creations. read more

I got to visit this cute coffee shop for the first time after seeing it advertised on instagram. It is esthetically pleasing but always packed. I went to study and write yelp reviews so I was excited that it wasn't as packed when I visited. I can say that while I had a good time here and the bathrooms were bigger than most, there is a high probability that I will not be back. The chairs were just that comfortable to sit in for longer than 20 minutes, it is about $10 for a cup of coffee and I bought 2 of them, and the service is not consistent with pleasantries. My sister and I went to Taj A Sweet Cafe on a Friday night, and it was pretty busy when we got there. We ordered an iced matcha with honey, the Biscoff cloud coffee, and a waffle with Nutella, strawberries, and bananas. The matcha was strong -- I couldn't really taste the honey, but it was still good. The coffee was also strong, with just a hint of Biscoff flavor, which was really nice. The waffle took a while to come out because they were so busy, but it was rich, chocolatey, and totally worth the wait. It paired perfectly with the more bitter drinks we ordered and made for a great sweet treat. The cafe itself is beautiful, with lots of seating both inside and outside. They even have couches, which were super comfortable. Overall, we really enjoyed our visit and I'd definitely go back. read more

In all honesty, everything that I've had here, from the savory offerings to the sweet offerings, and even the Ethiopian coffee that I discovered that they roast themselves was perfectly realized, and absolutely delicious. I love the way this place looks from inside, it's well thought out and has a beautiful middle eastern aesthetic I've seen in Morocco and Egypt. There's wooden carvings, a beautiful mural, and lots of seating inside. You walk up to order at the counter, and the display case has tons of sweets and baked goods ready to purchase, as well as coffee. It's so hard to choose, because everything looked so delicious. My husband got one pastry and a coffee, and I did the same. I was a bit surprised that two coffees and pastries were $30, that seems like a lot but I figured meh? It looks delicious and I couldn't wait to dig in. Unfortunately nothing lived up to expectations or tasted as good as things looked. My coffee was so bad I left it, and had to go somewhere else to get my fix. My croissant was dense, and I ended up just eating the topping- slivered almonds and icing. I'm used to soft, buttery, flaky croissants so this was a disappointment. My husband didn't enjoy his pastry nor coffee either, and our friends who had been to this place before mentioned similarly that the price didn't tie to the taste at all. I am all for another Arab coffee shop in Houston, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how the differentiation in this cafe. The aesthetic is modern and marbelized Aladdin. The menu is full of coffee-based drinks and a decent few non-caffienated items like flambé hot chocolate and iced chocolate milk. What was alarming to me was the man behind the counter serving up a fat slice of Kunafeh from one of MULTIPLE large trays behind a glass. My eyes did not run out of sweets to feast on. The juiciness, freshness, and variety of baklava-type desserts was unlike anything I've seen in the USA. The baklava ice cream was a thick slice of baklava served like a pie with vanilla ice cream shoved right in the middle of it with the layer surgically topped back onto it. *chef's kiss* at the amount of pistachios, crunch, sweet, and general balance of both items together. The hot chocolate flambé needed more flambé and was nice but wouldve been a 10/10 if they had used real chocolate in it. That leads me to the dubai chocolate bar, which was a 10/10 for taste, integrity of structure, proportion, and aesthetic. My latte was GORGEOUS and complete with the perfect latte art flower on it. My eyes and my camera eat first, so the art was appreciated. The latte itself was nice, although this latte with a basic sugar-free syrup (syrups are store-bought and not made in house), costed me a whopping $7.85 before tip. read more

We didn't try the Turkish coffee during this visit but were told it's really good and is quite strong, so if you're in need up a pick me up perhaps give it a try. They have a nice selection of baked goods made fresh along with assorted teas & coffee. Nice cafe to get some work done or catch up with friends. Also open till midnight on weekdays and 2a on weekends which is so convenient for the night owls. My friend ordered the almond croissant which was super rich and fluffy. Perfect flavor profiles. I tried several pastries for take out. I enjoyed them and always appreciate sweets that don't have too much sugar, however, the blend of textures and flavors for one of the three items I tried was not for me. I've come here twice in 2 days. It's been one of the best lattes Ive ever had. I had the iced pistachio latte. The espresso shot is pulled to perfection. Absolutely stunning cafe! I finally found a coffee shop that not only has an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere and environment but equally as great coffee. I tried the Tiramisu speciality ice coffee and it was delicious. Usually at other places latte's taste watered down or too sweet, the coffee here has so much depth and richness to it. I've never had coffee this smooth before. We also tried so pastries, I like the coconut dessert and the little chocolate balls were so delicious. Our first time having Turkish coffee, very nice staff here as well. I can tell this place is well loved and is a community staple, happy I found it!
