Great food at this hole in the wall gem. I came at 6pm on a Saturday and it was empty, so it was very quiet. The food though did not disappoint. We started off with the bao buns which had good structure to the bun. The pork belly had pickled veg and ginger which really upped the ante. The garlic noodles had a very good texture and true to its name rich flavors of garlic due to the savory coating of sauce it bathed in. The best part of it was the low, building spice of szechuan pepper. The 100 layer tofu was also very tasty- the layers never seemed to end! As a Taiwanese person, people tends to give me a poke when there are new Taiwanese eateries in town. Which I'm super grateful because I'm always on the hunt for the taste of home. When we entered Taiwan Bistro, we were asked to cleanse our hands with hand sanitizer before sat down. I appreciate clean hands so I was happy to oblige. When we looked at the menu, we were a bit confused at first because there weren't any main dishes. Then I quickly figured out the system and everything was smooth sailing after that. You see, usually we order the main dish then grab appetizers to our liking (at home in Taiwan). It is the same idea here, but Taiwan bistro emphasizes their appetizers so it could be confusing at first. If you are still not quite sure what to order after reading the menu several times, may I suggest: First, order some main dishes between the minced pork over rice, house special noodle and miso noodle soup. Then pick a few side dishes you are interested in. Most of them are soy sauce braised meats/tofu dishes so that they are loaded with tons of umami (savoriness). Finally order some beverages/soups to go with your meal. We ordered the house special noodles and minced pork over rice, braised pork belly buns, marinated cucumbers and sliced pork cheeks. It was a great success because everything was yummy! The house special noodles were udon noodles coated in a savory sauce with a few slices of tender pork on top. The noodles were chewy and we loved the taste and texture. The minced pork over rice was sizzling hot with a savory minced pork toping. It was rich but not greasy nor salty. I was kinda touched because it tasted like home. The cucumber salad was loaded with tons of garlic and we didn't mind. It was refreshing and crunchy, with a hint of a Sichuan peppercorn floral scent. The pork cheeks were tender and flavorful, it was so good with sliced ginger and onion. The pork belly buns were small but mighty. There were four in one order and were so cute! Each bao was loaded with braised pork, crunchy pickles, cilantro and peanut powder. Needless to say, it's full of favor and texture, yum! We wish we could have ordered some Taiwanese beer, but unfortunately we had some travel to do so no beer for us! I imagine this meal would be more enjoyable if we ordered some beer to go with the food. I hope you get to try this place as they provided great service and yummy food options. As a Taiwanese, I would say this place is not bad. I really like the sausage. It was served with garlic and tastes extra garlicky which I like haha. I hoped the mince pork rice had more minced pork. The noodles were good and fragrant but not very Taiwanese but that doesn't matter. The tofu with preserved egg was good too. The egg didn't have weird taste so that's good. Stoked to try this place out but when we tried ordering for dinner, a handful of items were sold out - not sure if this was a daily thing. We ordered the minced pork over noodles/mein and pork belly buns box. However, we got the minced pork over rice.. not only that but the "minced pork" was actually all "minced fat". I was pretty disappointed because the sauce and egg over the rice was delicious. Huge turnoff to just bite into fat.. The pork belly buns were okay, buns aren't soft and cracked in half when eating. Also bummed that a handful of their items were sold out, like the Taiwanese sausage.. that sounded very appetizing but didn't get the chance to try it. read more

I've been here a couple times and each time has been delicious! The food portions are on the smaller side, but it is pretty filling. The food here does taste like authentic Taiwanese food. :) If you're feeling adventurous, you can get the LuWei combination. We ordered the 5 item combo, which came with two meats and three veggies, but it's random, picked by the chef. I like ordering this one because it's a surprise every time! This one may come with meat tendons, pork cheeks or ears, and chicken necks or gizzards, so if you're sensitive to those foods, this one might not be for you. Lu Rou Fan (minced pork over rice) is always a delicious choice and tastes even better when you add an egg. The chicken wings were a tad bit dry, but it was still good. I tried the BaiYeDouFu (hundred layered bean curd) for the first time and now it's a new favorite! I also love ordering GuaBao as well. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, especially if you're looking for authentic Taiwanese food! This is such a lovely, unassuming, hole in the wall spot. It's literally around the corner from my house and I only just tried it recently. The interior is meticulously designed and cozy. Non alcoholic tea beverages were delightful, but they also carry Taiwanese beer and sake. We ordered the pork belly bao, garlic cucumber salad, garlic noodles, beef shank, hundred layer tofu and minced pork over rice to share along three people. Everything was delicious and we only left a few bites of food behind. I am still thinking about all these little bites. So tasty! This Taiwan bistro mostly serves marinated food. If you never had Taiwan style marinated food, it's on the sweeter side, so go in with that in mind. Their non-alcoholic drink menu is my favorite, especially "First Love One More Time". I come here when I'm craving some home style Taiwan food. I highly recommend the preserved egg tofu dish, the garlic taste in there it's really amazing. The only downside is the food can be somewhat one note, because they are more of less the same marinade. And overall a bit salty, so if that's not your jam, probably try somewhere else! read more

A cool small space located off Capitol Hwy. The decor has a minimalist design to it and goes well for the space. The food we ordered tasted good, however, I wished that they had more items. The items I wanted to try were not in stock- chicken wings, Taiwanese sausage, and minced pork with rice. We ordered some of the other items that included: ZhaNan Special Combo with beef shank, miso soup, garlic cucumber salad, fried tofu, and house special noodle. The house special noodle tasted great and reminded me of like a stir fry udon noodles that I used to eat when I was younger. Parking was easy, tucked away in a small plaza. Unfortunately, that was probably the only good thing about visiting this place. The staff was not rude, but the service was abysmal. We were the only other table and the other table already had their food and water, and yet it still took about 20 minutes for the server to come greet us and bring us water. The 7 item luwei combo was just average, it was good, probably better than most, but if you've had luwei in Taiwan, this is really borderline average. The soft tofu with preserved eggs is a bright spot, as with the braised pork belly bao. I would definitely recommend these two items, but it's not quite good enough to entice for a return visit. The minced pork over rice, again, very average, the minced pork sauce was very light and not very flavorful. And the house special noodle was especially bad. Honestly it tasted like someone just cooked udon with some soy sauce, and then sprinked some black pepper on it. Blech... The food was very tasty here! I tried the house special noodles and the pork bao. The noodles were fragrant and heavy on garlic flavor, which I loved. The bao had an unexpected peanut powder/seasoning on top! Some of the more popular drinks were sold out. Beautiful interior!!! Seriously such a gorgeous spot, with a beautiful drink menu too. I was craving something comforting with a midday drink to soak in the sun on Monday and stopped here after class. I got the 1000 layer tofu with rice, and it was perfect with a lychee beer. Good flavor and texture :) felt quite healthy hehe. The employee working was really kind and pretty and answered my questions & recommended my dish! We shared the chicken wings, Taiwanese sausage bao, and the house special noodles. The chicken wings were yummy! The noodles looked good and tasted ok. The bao though was so disappointing. The buns were hard from the first bite. We just ate the sausages inside. He offered to make us new ones but it didn't seem appealing anymore. Expect to pay about $30 to 40 to feed 2 people. Their combination platters are chef's choice tapas that save you a few dollars over picking what you want. That's up to you, if it's worth it. You can get the Taiwanese pork rice to go with the dishes. The half portion is $3.50 and a good compliment to the tapas. half a rice, and 2-3 tapas per person is enough for a meal. If you're hungry though you'll want more, and that's when it starts to add up. I am a fan of their hundred layered tofu, the texture is on point and it's delicious. Also, the beef tripe was good. I really wanted to like this place, unfortunately, it was a miss for me. We went on a Sunday night and there was one person working. She was the waitress and the cook! I don't know if someone called in sick but the experience wasn't the best. They specialized in braised Taiwanese appetizers so most dishes should have been cooked. The fried tofu, tripe and edamame were the better dishes. I had high hopes for the mince pork over rice and pork blood cake but both dishes were mushy. The rice had WAY too much oil and pork blood cake had a sweet peanut powder on top. I don't think the peanut powder should be sweet...although it's been a long while since I had it. Overall, the flavors were good. Maybe it will be better when a dedicated chef is in the kitchen? I did feel bad for the lady who had to do both jobs today...kudos on her efforts! read more
