Just left Taisho at the Boardwalk. Could not have been more disappointed. We frequent all the restaurants on the Boardwalk since we live in the neighborhood and are very patient customers as we work in the restaurant industry and know what a Friday night can be like and the chaos that can happen. We also know that Covid has been really hard on the restaurant industry and we take that into account. However, there is a point when so many things go wrong that it is just too much.
It was only a table of 3 of us fairly early in the evening. We are sat right away, there was not a wait for a table at all. We had to get up and ask for a server after 15 plus minutes of not having anyone visit our table and seeing other tables which were sat after us get waited on. Once the server finally came over, he was very friendly and took our full order as we were completely ready. We did receive waters quickly, but it was a good 30 minutes before we received our cocktails. It was another 20 minutes and still had not received any of our food after other tables who ordered after us had been served. Two of the entrées were brought out a few minutes later but not any of the third which was only one sushi roll and an order of dumplings. We asked our server when ordering if there were any vegetables on the steak and noodle dish, he said no, so we ordered a side dish of vegetables. The dish came out full of vegetables, so the side dish was completely unnecessary. A bit of an annoyance but no big deal at that point. The sushi was finally delivered after the other two meals were almost gone. (We never even mentioned that there were shrimp in the chicken dish. The person who ordered a chicken was allergic to shrimp. Fortunately she's only allergic when consumed, so the other two of us were able to enjoy a few pieces of shrimp. Thank goodness they were whole and easily spotted.) The two entrées and sushi were finished, and we still had not received the dumplings. We also realized at that point that we did not receive the appetizer, salad, and soup that was supposed to go along with the two entrées. We bought to the servers attention and all he said is that he could box up the missing food as that is all that he could do. I asked to speak to a manager as we were a bit frustrated. Another good 10 minutes went by before for the manager came over. She did not seem concerned or apologetic and just said it was the servers 2nd day working and offered to box up the missing food. Usually we are very sympathetic to a new server but it was surprising the server didn't even mention that they were new and he seemed confident with answering the questions we had when ordering, i.e. the vegetables in the dish. Working in the service industry that is always the first thing you say to a table so they know that you are doing your best and so the guests knew you were still learning. (At least I always did.) I just thought it was very poor taste of the manager to blame it on the server instead of just taking care of the issue and using the opportunity to turn our experience around. We ended up having to ask the manager to please discount our food since we were not interested in taking the missing food home at that point. The manager left and we never saw her again. The server brought the bill with the missing dumplings and the extra vegetables taken off and we did receive a 30% discount on the food only. While this would usually seem like enough, it was just the total lack of concern, lack of any apology and placing the blame on the server with no real concern that left us extremely frustrated and with a very poor experience. If it really was that servers second day I feel very sorry for him. He did not have any support from a manager or a trainer assisting or checking in on him especially with it being a Friday night. read more
