Mr. Nigel is a true artist in his trade. We were desperate in fixing my boyfriend's vest and jacket for a wedding, and Nigel worked his magic. Fast service does not me a shotty job at this spot. They're meticulous with their work and extremely knowledgable. The job was done in less than 24 hours of our bringing in the items, and he looked amazing. Nigel's charming personality is a true bonus on the fabulous work that he does. 5 stars is not enough for this little gem in the city. The question on every new NYC transplant's mind is- where do I find a good tailor? And the search is risky! You can lose many a good garment in attempting to locate 'The One'. 10 years went by... Then one day I was out strolling in the e.v. when I noticed a new store in my neighborhood, "Tailors Atelier". I walked in and introduced myself to the owner, Nigel, and asked some general questions about alterations. Not only was he charismatic and seemed to know what he was talking about, but also his suit fit impeccably! Soon I returned with four tuxedo dresses in tow- they're kind of my thing (if you couldn't tell). As I tried on each garment and explained what I wanted done, Nigel made suggestions that improved upon the ideas I began with, which resulted in a fit that exceeded my original expectations. New possibilities opened up! A whole new world! The price was reasonable and the turnaround time was good too. I left happy. But then! About a week before the alterations were supposed to be finished I received a call- It was my friend, he had bought tickets for a fancy event and, as is all too likely in the world of NYC singledom, his date flaked. After a less than desirable experience with Crown Heights tailor (who had my blazer for three weeks without putting on the functional buttons,) I took my blazer to Nigel who is the owner of Tailors Atelier. The tailor who serviced me was able to make the adjustments and the adjustments to my blazer and suggested that I not completely open up the lapel button because it might damaged the jacket. Two weeks later I brought in some khakis that needed the pants' length shorten and I was greeted yet again with same exemplary and professional service. Being a fan of Antonio Centeno's Real Men Real Style YouTube channel, Mr. Centeno strongly recommends that you know the name of your tailor. I'm happy to say that not only do I know my tailor's name, but Nigel will be my tailor for life. Okay, better late than never! I am a hopeless procrastinator (as you can already tell from my late post which should have been in September)... so of course a week or so before my friend's wedding, I decide to try on my bridesmaid dress. Of course it was comically long. I went into Atelier, and the girl who helped me was fantastic. They rushed my order, and when I picked up the dress in a few days it was PERFECT. The length was like it was made for me. Talk about breathing a sigh of relief! Thanks to their hard work and expediting the order, the bride was shielded from having knowledge of my procrastination disease. The results were so good I brought in another pair the next day which were done with the same efficiency and skill. They are polite, professional, and get the job done. I would absolutely love to give 5 stars because Sanaa is a dream come true. She does amazing work, she listens, she communicates well, makes great suggestions, is pleasant, kind, encouraging, and clearly I can go on and on. HOWEVER, the owner Nigel is the complete opposite. I was warned by a friend that he was rude but the work is phenomenal and I thought it can't be that bad. She was right. During her experience, she told a friend that she wanted to get something to eat after her fitting and he suggested she eat a salad. This girl wears a size 2. I wanted my dress to fit like a glove, Nigel told me it couldn't be any tighter, he was wrong and Sanaa did what I asked and more. When I was leaving that day, he asked if intended to lose more weight, the question wasn't the issue, his tone was. That was strike 1. Strike 2 was when I drove an hour for a fitting, for Nigel to claim that they attempted to call me that morning to say my dress wasn't ready. I checked my call log and I had a missed call 40 minutes prior when I was already in route. No voice mail, no email. This was 2 weeks before my wedding. Sanaa apologized profusely, while Nigel acted like it was my fault. Strike 3, I went to pick up my dress at 3pm and Nigel was still steaming it which is fine. What's not fine is that when the woman at the front desk, announced my arrival, he nastily replied "she was supposed to be here at 4". Clearly I need my dress so I say nothing and wait. When I picked up my dress to carry it out, Nigel offers to do it for me and I begin to think maybe he isn't so bad, wrong! He wants to make sure I don't leave before reassuring that my balance is paid. The woman at the front desk was unable to find me by my name and asked Nigel how should she search, he responds "I don't know, try her email, you've only worked here for 5 years." I could not believe he would speak this way to one of his employees, especially in front of a customer. He's just nasty, there's no other way to put it. Usually every bridal experience is a happy one because everyone wants to please the bride. Not Nigel. I rarely spoke a word during his nasty tirades. It's pointless. Sanaa is a dream and the work is phenomenal but it's New York City, it's totally possible to receive amazing service with a smile. My maid of honor was with me on most of visits and is a September 2020 bride, she expressed that she would never come here. read more

AND I had to leave for the wedding in one week! Nigel, Saana and the rest of the team worked hard to reconstruct the blouses (with heavy bead work and tulle) so that they fit me perfectly within one week! I honestly don't know where to start. I brought my wedding dress, a post ceremony wedding dress, a blouse, and jeans for alteration. When we first started, although my main wedding dress is made of beautiful fabric, it essentially fit me like a bag. Besides Shortening the arms I wasn't exactly sure what to do to make it look like the wedding dress I envisioned. Working with Nigel and one of his employees was in my opinion, was the best experience you could have with a tailor. They were patient, they listened, and most importantly they are beyond talented. They took a blouse I had owned for years, that I love, but haven't been able to wear because of the sleeve placement. I'd been to several other tailors With this piece and all of them basically turned down the job saying it was too difficult. Nigel and his team took on the project like it was nothing and it came out perfectly, just as my two dresses and jeans did. If you want a cheap alteration this isn't the place for you. The prices aren't higher for their own sake, Nigel pays his employees true living wages in addition to training them so they can become master tailors and it really shows. The quality of work they do is ABSOLUTELY worth the price. I'll be bringing all of my future alterations here, and highly recommend this place to anyone for jobs big or small. I have to give 5 stars!! I broke my expensive moncler down jacket. And I had a terrible tailor store they made a terrible sew on my jacket. I am so sad that my jacket looks ugly and cheap. And then I found Tailors Atelier I wish I can get good solved here. And they did it! Staff here are very nice and they have lots experience to explain how to fix my jacket.I bought trimming for them and they fixed my jacket like new design. I am very happy. I DID NOT get any alterations done here but was deterred by the staff's entitled attitude and the cost. I took a dress in to get a quote for alterations and the wait was pretty long (even if you book an appointment), the staff wasn't particularly nice and when I got the pricing quote I was baffled. It was more expensive than the dress itself so I walked out. Maybe it's a great place to get high-end alterations done (like for your wedding dress or tux) but not definitely not worth it if a dress is worth $300 or less- I'm not exaggerating when I say the alterations would have cost more than the dress itself and I wasn't asking for anything too complicated. read more

I tried my best to forget my experience with this place last summer. But I walked by the other day and all the anger and stress this place caused came rushing back. So I made an account just to leave this review. I was a groomsman at a friend's wedding and the suit we had ordered online -- terrible decision, but it was not mine to make. The suit arrived in the mail and it did not fit me at all. The wedding was happening in 2 weeks and there was a ton of work to be done. I don't really know too much about suits, alterations, or anything about this stuff in general. I trusted the reviews here on yelp and took a leap of faith. I walked in and there were already 2 people getting alterations done and was asked to wait. I took this as a good sign and waited for about 20 minutes or so. When it was my turn, the guy (not the owner, it was another gentleman) had me put on my suit and see the fitting. It was a disaster even to my untrained eye and I had hoped they could really work it out. I needed the sleeves shortened, the shoulders redone, the chest area tightened(?), the pants tapered, the button moved, etc. There were a whole slew of things to be done. He marked all the alterations with a chalk and.. I was quoted $300. Which was about the price of the suit. I was annoyed not because of the price, but because my best friend, the groom, decided we needed to order this terrible suit. And a little peeved about the prices, but nevertheless, I just wanted to get the ordeal over with and agreed. They asked when I needed it by. I told them I was flying out in 8 days. They told me to come back on Monday (6 days from the day I brought it in). All was well and I thought I had paid my way out of the stress of having a suit that couldn't get fixed. Monday comes around and I come back to the shop for my suit. Thinking I no longer had to stress about anything because I paid a premium? That came to a halting screech. I was told, "it's not ready, come back tomorrow". No explanation, no apology, nothing. Simply "come back tomorrow". Ok, fine, I thought. It was a lot of work, understandable. But don't agree to a date where the suit would be done and not deliver. I came back the next day (day 8, mind you, I was flying out the next morning). And he was literally in the middle of working on it as I walk into the store. Sewing up the sleeves. So I had to wait another 15 minutes for him to finish. They handed me the suit and checked me out. Again, as an amateur who has never gotten anything tailored before, I didn't try it on in the shop because well.. they didn't ask me to, so I didn't know. (I should have). I got home and tried the suit on. Chalk marks still on the jacket. And as I buttoned up, I realized, they didn't move the button! it was just hanging loose. Enraged, I called the shop back and they simply said "oh bring it back and we'll get it fixed quickly" By now, I was just pissed off. I brought the suit back. And told them I couldn't stay and wait for them to fix it. I had a dinner to get to and I would come pick it up later on that night. They offered to get it fixed and bring it to my building and leave it with the doorman. What am I? Made out of money? My building didn't have a doorman. They told me to wait and they were going to fix it very quickly. So I waited a couple minutes and they had it done. I was not happy. But fine, I finally had a suit that fit now. I'm just going to forget this ever happened and move on. The wedding happens. The suit held together. I got through it. My dad, who happened to have been at the wedding, and is way more knowledgeable about suits and fashion, inspected my coat and had a grimace on his face, and asked why the hell the lining on the inside of the suit was loose and not sewn together. And the parts that WERE sewn, was the worst craftsmanship he had ever seen in his life. He showed me the stitching and again, even to my untrained eye, looked like it had been done in 30 seconds because it was zig zagging everywhere and uneven. By the time I got back to the US, I tossed the suit into the back of my closet and had completely forgotten about it. Until now. read more

I bought a beautiful bridal gown, and wanted a complete reconstruction of the top. I went to at least a dozen tailors and I was either turned down completely, or told that my vision couldn't be accomplished. Alas, Nigel came to the rescue. Not only was he the first Tailor to attentively listen to my vision, he was not daunted by the challenge at all. As he began to pin the dress, I could see my vision coming forth. He was also very mindful of the pattern, and made sure that it was cut to perfection. Nigel has since opened up Tailor's Atlier and I followed him here, and refuse to see anyone else except him. I have since brought other garments to him, all of which were done superbly. A five star rating on YELP is an understatement of his talent, and customer service. I have had a few tailor experiences before where I've felt rushed and the simplest hem work take weeks. I thought it was a norm until I stepped into Nigel's company. I had to have a heavy beaded cocktail dress taken in down the side seams AND adjust straps with only 4 days before a Gatsby themed party, I thought I was completely out of luck. I brought the dress in on Tuesday and Nigel gave me a professional consultation.. I then picked up the PERFECT finished dress on Friday. Nigel and his wonderful team took such great care of this dress, they moved each individual glass and leather bead by hand and then re-stitched them back so it looks NEW! The price was very reasonable for all the work that was done plus 10% off when you check in on Yelp as a new client. I went to Tailors Atelier to get a brand new Hugo Boss suit tailored. They ruined the suit. For some reason, they unstitched the shoulder (a difficult move that requires a very experienced tailor, I have since been told) and restitched it back incorrectly -- where it looks like the padding under one of my shoulders has been hollowed out. In addition the stitching going down the back of the blazer was re-sewn in a way where it looks like it swerves now instead of going down my back in a straight line. And finally. the back vents don't fall straight anymore, rather because of a bad sewing job (again) the vents sit awkwardly. The tailor said all of these issues would be resolved after the suit got a good pressing from a dry cleaner, I trusted him and had that done, but none of the issues were resolved. In short, this tailor ruined a brand new $600 dollar suit, so beware. read more

Went here for my wedding dress alterations based on yelp reviews. Have a very simple, silk dress that needed hemming and was way too busty which required having the straps taken in. Very happy with the service, price and final product. Nigel really knows his way around a wedding dress and offered really good design advice. I trusted his knowledge 100%. We had a lengthy discussion over french vs american bustles, haha. Also, ladies you are in luck because they just recently opened up a bridal salon next door so now there is even more room and privacy for fittings. I bought a skirt online that was cheaply made- the buttons were loose and had a weird flap in the middle that needed to be sewn. I brought the skirt in so that they could fix. Upon entering, I was welcomed with smiles. Everyone was super friendly and even gave me advice on how to do it myself so I could save the money- I chose to have them do it instead simply because I felt that they have the expertise. The skirt came out exactly how I wanted it and it literally was done within an hour! I really appreciated that honesty, which won me over and I will continue to go there for all of my tailoring needs. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL I made an appointment with them for Thursday afternoon and traveled downtown from uptown to the store. When I got there I was told that Nigel was not in. Typically, in a place like a hair salon, when your appointment needs to be canceled, they call you in advance to let you know, just in order to minimize the inconvenience. But I had received no such call. Still, I was willing to see what would happen next. And indeed, the receptionist was cordial and apologetic. She told me they would call me back to reschedule. But the weekend is now over and I've received no call. Having clothing made for you is a very sensitive and intimate job, and requires great communication. If an establishment can't call you to let you know they need to cancel an appointment and, furthermore, if they can't even call you to reschedule, that doesn't strike me as a sign that communication will be very promising, or that I should trust them with this kind of a job.
