A bunch of us celebrated galentines day at Tacuba and the food did not disappoint. We ordered a few appetizers and entrees to share. The drink menu was extensive and they will make any drink without alcohol. I ordered a virgin La Sandia and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was. I love watermelon so this was the best recommendation from the server. The servers were so nice and attentive from replacing our plates with new ones to offering to move things out of the way etc. We had an awesome time. What we ordered: Guacamole and chips, a must at any Mexican restaurant. The guac had a slight kick and the orange sauce that came with it was fire. Tostado de pulpo is amazing. I would come back just to have 5 of these because it was so good. Add some lime and the tostado is bursting with flavors. 10/10 recommend. Calle de hacha was so creamy. Sea scallops cooked to perfection and another great dish to share. Molcajete with the steak, chicken, shrimp, cactus and cheese, yummm. There were so many ingredients in this bowl melded together that tasted so good together. Finally, we ordered the Birria con consume and although it was messy to eat, it was delicious. I hadn't really thought of this place for brunch but it wasn't super busy on a Sunday at 12:45 so we decided to pop in. I really love the interior. It has a lot of nods to day of the dead, with Mexican skulls and ornate tiles everywhere. They did a great job on the aesthetic. It's also nicely lit with natural light. I think they have a skylight in the upper back area of the restaurant. The pepinada cocktail was delicious and boozy! It's a Really great option if you like spicy and sweet. My companions completely cleared their plates which suggests that brunch was really good, that we were really hungry, and that the portions are just a bit small for my liking. The guacamole for the table was fresh and the red sauce that accompanied it was delish. I was surprised at how good my chilaquilles were. I added steak, which is a must add. The steak and the red sauce with the saturated chip with cheese was muey bueno. Definitely recommend this spot when in the neighborhood if looking for something equal parts trendy and flavorful. read more

We started with the spicy guacamole and salsa, I got a house Margarita and my boyfriend got the La Brujita drink. Definitely recommend the spicy guacamole, great flavor and you get a little kick from the jalapeños. If you like Smokey drinks La brujita is a great option. If you like Margaritas, I recommend the Passion Fruit Marg. We then got the Sudadera Tacos and the Barría Tacos. They bring three tacos with their corn tortillas. I'm not a fan of corn tortillas but theirs are amazing! Since moving from East Village to HK, I have been on the hunt for a spot to scratch my Rosie's Taqueria itch (on 2nd and 2nd, best taco/ambience joint for date night or friend hangs!) We tried 'ritas and Ranchero Tequileria but so far Tacuba really takes the cake. Super friendly staff, our server was originally from Mexico and happily reviewed the menu with us. We get tacos all the time so we decided to try something new. We got the Aguachile (kind of like ceviche), Molcajete (roasted meat and veggies in the stone dish thing...that was a really crappy explanation I know), and chips and salsa. LOVED the salsa. Marg's were great too, with a lot of options and drink specialties. For being such a crowded spot, the staff was still attentive, friendly, and above and beyond what I would expect from a bursting restaurant on a Friday night. Next time we do the regular tacos. I've walked by and admired how fun this restaurant appears to be. Decorated so tastefully and doors open welcoming people inside or out I thought I'd give it a shot. I chose to sit at the bar where the service was slow. I was the only customer at the bar at 11:30 in the morning. I ordered the guacamole. It was ok. Definitely fresh with hunks of avocado, but lacked seasoning. I also had the ensalada de picada salad. This was the big disappointment. The appearance was gorgeous with curly carrots on top. I said to the waiter, "this was supposed to have chicken. " he said, "it does". He was right. Cut up in pieces the size of my index finger nail I would say there was maybe two tablespoons. Tacuba has excellent Mexican food and delicious drinks! I would recommend the tacos or the pernil and make sure you save room for the Churros for dessert! Everything about this place was great including service, food, music. The decor was cute. We came in to try some hispanic foods. We got some good flavors. We got a chicken mole and their salmon special. Their salmon special was to die for! I really loved how crispy the skin was in contrast to how tender their actual salmon was. It was laid on top of pureed polenta or something and it had the perfect amount of seasoning without being overly salty or sweet. The chicken mole on the other side was an interesting take, as it was very sweet. We both tried it and did not find it too appealing, but we paid for it so we finished it. We also go the dessert which I would recommend, the passion fruit with ice cream. Everything worked so well together. It even had hints of coffee in the drizzle which I don't normally like coffee, but again the complementation was on point. Service was amazing, she was so good, informative, efficient, nice. She did get us to buy the special and dessert even though we initially didn't want to, so she was very persuasive. We did not get drinks, but all in all the meal was great, the only issue were the prices were a bit more than we'd expect. In terms of the portion size to dollar amount, not equal at all. We saw the prices of the drinks and that was also a little absurd as we looked around and we could tell most of the drinks had minimal liquor to mixed drink ratio. The Pollo tacos tastes amazing, there's lots of flavor. Honestly I prefer them over the carne asada. But the carne asada taste great, just not as much seasoning. I usually don't order guac at restaurants but the one here is really fresh and I highly recommend it. I went before indoor seating reopened and there was a lot of outdoor seating available. I went to Tacuba Hell's Kitchen for dinner the other day and dined at their beautiful outdoor dining area. The staff are all very friendly and the restaurant has taken many precautions for the safety of both their workers and customers. There are plastic coverings dividing each table so that you are safely separated from people sitting at tables next to you. The workers all wore gloves and masks and social distancing was enforced. The only downside is that there are very loud noises once in a while from cars and people walking by, but that is inevitable in nyc. My friends and I ordered their guacamole, pollo (chicken) tacos, carne asada (steak) tacos and pescado (fish) tacos along with some frozen mango margaritas. It was all very delicious and the tacos are priced at a reasoned price, around $5 or less for each. I don't normally like to order guacamole at restaurants because I have my own recipe, but their guac is pretty good and I'd consider ordering it again. For the tacos, I liked the chicken ones the best and then the steak tacos and then fish tacos. The chicken tacos were the most flavorful and were covered in some sort of orange sauce. The steak was cooked very tenderly and yummy, but was not as flavorful as the chicken ones. The fish tacos were a bit bland for me and I wished that the fish was a little crispier. Overall, my experience at Tacuba Hell's Kitchen was very positive and I definitely plan on returning. All the food was delicious, but my favorites were the chicken and steak tacos. read more

On the east side of 9th avenue between 53rd and 54th Street this gem has the best margaritas at $20 and they're worth every penny. The food is amazing. Service is quick and the waiters and waitresses are both courteous and entertaining. Two people can have two margaritas each and the entree for about $120 including the tip. The experience was very authentic; the bar selection appears to be huge! Guacamole ($12): hate paying these prices for guac but these were some chunky delicious pieces Carne Asada ($28): didn't try the steak on this but the fried rice is soo good. We ordered a few appetizers and I have the chorizo taco appetizer (3 tacos) that was huge portion for me at least. The guacamole was delicious and fresh. Looking for a place to eat and stopped by because there were some tables eating outside and it looked ok indoors. Kind of empty a little indoors, but not bad. The upstairs bathroom seemed completely locked. Either someone was in there, doing who know what, or it was out of order but they didn't put up a sign. Additional stalls available downstairs next to the kitchen, but there was a sign inside that said to not even flush toilet paper! And next to the toilet was a big trashcan. I really don't understand these restaurants where the plumbing is so bad you can't even flush toilet paper. I just think trash cans of used toilet paper next to a kitchen is so unsanitary. Food was decent, but not great. I ordered a cocktail and the drink was really warm, with no ice. My food was pretty good but they got the order wrong. Little bit torn on my rating for Tacuba... I'm somewhere between a 3 and 4 on this one... four for the atmosphere and 3 for the food. For starters the space is GORGEOUS. We visited on a beautifully warm day with the front windows wide open letting the sunshine and breeze in. The rustic woods, the decorative tile work, the industrial style lighting fixtures - the entire place is just sooo soo pretty. The brunch menu is a good one. There's ricotta-lime pancakes with hibiscus syrup, enchiladas, carnitas w/ habanero-tamarind salsa (say what!?), poblano peppers filled w/ quinoa and mushrooms. And of course tacos, guac, and margaritas! This gal went the taco route and I was sliiiiightly disappointed with them. The menu says the tacos come w/ 3 in the order and they are 'appetizer size' and I wish I had paid closer attention to that... these tacos were small! And the chicken was drenched in a sauce that I can only describe as 'spaghetti o's like'. The menu says the chicken is marinated in adobo but I'd sure like to know what they poured on the taco to serve it. On the plus though -- the guac was real nice. Chunky and full of tomato, onion and a little spice. Butttt maybe a little smaller than I had hoped for. We had to ask for extra chips to finish up the salsa too. The frozen margarita were perfectly blended and mango-y (they also have other fruity options...). One side note - the margaritas are pre-made... so my galfriend who was 5 months preggo at the time couldn't have a virgin margarita... thankfully the bartender was up to making a mocktail for her with fresh grapefruit and agave. The highlight of the service was getting seated and it all went downhill from there. Three of us came and sat at the bar for a quick drink and a snack after a few hours at the MOMA. For what we ordered, the pace was glacial; for reference a girl who sat and ordered around the same time as us got her full entree and was halfway through by the time our chips and guac came. The restaurant was in no way packed or busy. Aside from the service, the chip vs guac ratio was WAY off and so we requested another basket of chips which seemed to annoy the bartender. Our second basket was stale (first one definitely tasted fresh) and the bartender pretty much ignored us for the rest of the time we were there. So. If you want to sit at a bar and be ignored just to end up getting stale chips and mediocre service this is your place. Great little Mexican place in the neighborhood! I loved that almost everything on the menu was vegetarian-friendly. The service was impeccable. I'm so happy we have a new go-to for Mexican food nearby! My husband and I enjoyed an individual "cabana", but we will definitely bring the kids next time as they would enjoy it as well. The portions were perfect - I didn't feel over-stuffed after leaving. The food was fresh and the servers checked on us often. We had the guacamole, red tomatillo salsa and chips, queso fundido with rajas and the vegetarian burrito. Looking forward to going back to try more things on the menu! read more
