I got their jamaica and orange drinks, rice and beans, jamon torta, and chile verde and carnitas tacos dorados to try. My grandma also got herself a carne asada burrito which was decently sized but was mostly beans and she said the meat was kinda tough. This was my first time trying a Jamaica drink and it reminded me of cranberry juice. And The orange drink pretty much just tasted like a non bubbly Fanta. Oh you can also get one free refill on them if you want there. Yall know I'm a bean fiend and these beans were creamy, smooth, earthy, and seasoned but still let the beans shine. #beanfiendapproved The rice was super flavorful, a bit tomatoy, savory, and yummy. The jamon torta had mayo, crunchy shredded lettuce, diced tomato, thick cut deli like meat, plenty of melty cheese, all on a soft a bit sweet bun. Was actually way more flavorful and yummy than I thought it would be. The tacos had a decently griddled crisp chewy corny corn toritilla and plenty of meat. The carnitas were savory but kinda oily and a bit dry. but The chile verde MNM. Big chunks of juicy tender melt in your mouth flavorful meat. One of those spots that keeps it simple and knocks it out of the park. We stopped in during the Active Streets El Monte event and were really impressed. The building itself sets the tone with its cool 60s look, almost like a vintage Wienerschnitzel, with that classic roadside charm that makes you feel like you've found a neighborhood staple. This is a cash only place, but the prices are affordable for both the quality and the generous portions you get. It is homestyle Mexican food done right. No frills, nothing fancy, just well seasoned, satisfying dishes that hit the spot. We ordered the Asada Burrito, Asada Fries, and the Chile Verde plate. All three were excellent. The burrito was packed (tons of beef!) and flavorful without being too greasy, the asada fries had that perfect balance of crisp fries and meat, and the chile verde plate was rich and generously-portioned. I got a recommendation to come here on a local forum. I've worked in the South El Monte area for over a decade. Driven past this place dozens of times but never tried. I've tried the Omanas when it was on Rush St well over a decade ago before it closed. I think they opened this one in 2018. I just ordered Carnitas Nachos and Carne Asada Quesadilla. The food is decent for the price. My usual place for Nachos is $10.88 and my usual place for meat quesadillas increased to $11.50 -- so the prices here are better but only slightly. I would not say the quality or portions are better. Their nachos uses shredded white cheese but I would prefer some of the yellow nacho cheese instead. Not a fan of the refried beans in the nachos. They do give two small containers of hot sauce and whole green peppers but the hot sauce is very mild more like tomato puree rather than pico de gallo or hot sauce. My usual quesadilla spot gives a dollop of sour cream and spicy hot sauce - which I think is better. There is lots of outdoor seating & a park across the street to enjoy your food. Food came out within a minute which is pretty fast. I wanted to like the place because of the prices. Let me start off by saying that I've been eating these tacos since I was first introduced to them by my dad when I was less than 10 years old. It's been so long, I don't even remember how old I was at the time. So when I bite into these, I'm not just tasting their unique flavors. I'm also tasting a bit of nostalgia like the food critique in the movie Ratatouille. Having said that, you need to come give this place a try, but you just have to be mentally prepared for it. Are these authentic Mexican tacos? No. Are these earning a Michelin Star in the future? No. But are these uniquely LA tacos in only the way LA can be? Hell yes! If I know one thing for certain, it's that you won't find these flavors anywhere else. Or maybe you can if you can figure out their salsa recipes. For all I know, they can be a simple mixture of canned Mexican sauces you can find at any grocery store. And if they are, they are still so damn good. The tacos themselves are simple: tortilla, meat, and salsa. Sometimes, the meat doesn't look, feel, or taste the way you'd expect. But you know what? It's still delicious in its own way. Whatever it is that they are putting in their salsas, I have no idea, but it just works. The red sauce is simple, spicy, and flavorful in a way no one else can do. The green sauce is also tasty and flavorful. The service is quick, and if you aren't paying attention, your tacos will be sitting there getting cold waiting for you to get them. The ambiance is what it is. Nothing to write home about, but slightly improved from the original, and literal, hole-in-the-wall location they used to have on the side of a market for many years when they used to go by Omañas. Although I haven't lived anywhere near this area for over 20 years, I still have to stop by when I'm in the area. You won't find these flavors anywhere else. Just try it and see for yourself. You might be disappointed at first. But then you'll remember these tacos later and say, "hey, maybe I should try them again and give them another shot." Today at 2pm I went to buy tacos and the customer service there was very bad, I don't know if it's the owner or worker but he was very disrespectful but he has years working there because I've went since I was younger with my family, I ordered and paid for extra tacos and order of plain French fries welp he didn't not give me those extra tacos and fries instead he gave me something I didn't order I told him I didn't order that, I wasn't able to get a refund or get it changed I had to keep something I didn't want but he charged me for it. I had no way of knowing because he doesn't give receipts. I don't appreciate that way he talked to me or treated me he was very rude and disrespectful I hope he takes this review in consideration so he doesn't treat others the way he did to me. I write this review with a sad heart as the fish tacos were very tasty and really well made. Love the crema and cabbage combo as opposed to just dry cabbage. The sad part... They're a CASH ONLY place and their soda machine is busted. They do however had Horchata's and Orange Punch instead. We ordered a few fish tacos and the asada fries. I just got some food from them, and it is probably the nastiest, bland, unseasoned, and really struggling food I ever had in quite a while. I decided to taste them anyways; despite the fact, I would have preferred more variety in the Asada Fries. First few bites were okay. But I ate about a quarter of the Asada Fries, before they were just too bland, and I couldn't eat another bite. The Burrito was even worse. Very flat, pitiful Burrito. Mainly a couple of big scoops of refried beans, and not much meat. No salsa, pico, onions, rice etc. Very pitiful. Tasted bland, and tortilla wasn't sticking together, due to the fact the Burrito was not put together well. Two stars, because I kinda feel maybe I got them on an off day or something. I don't know. The employees were nice, and the prices are very good. They stay open late on the weekend. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. So yeah. Prices are fairly reasonable here, with taxes rolled into the displayed price (weather they, or they don't pay taxes) but like some other reviewers said, their carne asada (beef) is kinda funky. It's kind of like chopped bacon with strings of cooked lettuce in it, not sure but it's a mix of something. Not like traditional carne asada as most if not all other Mexican food joints. It squished down into a tortilla holding some sort of mixture of meat, beans, and maybe red salsa but no rice or anything else it may have included. Also bought 6 tacos de asada, missing one. The meat had good flavor but the texture was off, it felt like it disintegrated into grainy smaller bits.
