The food is good. But what really hurts is that inaccurate and prolonged wait time. If you call ahead the guy ALWAYS says twenty minutes, but when you arrive they are never ready. To boot, they sometimes get the order wrong. Today (last time coming here) I was asked to wait 20 additional minutes PLUS another 10. So basically one fucking hour. Ridiculous. If they were at least honest I'd consider a much better review for their food but this lapse basic inconsideration is something no one should waste their time with. Nick discovered La Perla in Gardena when he asked some locals if they knew of a good place to eat. They told him La Perla was the only place they ate besides their own homes. Recommendations don't get much better than that. Nick and Carlos told me this was the best Mexican restaurant they know of and after eating there I can't argue with them. It's Mexican food for Mexican people. I asked for guacamole and chips and was told they don't have guacamole. My burrito was wrapped in a flour tortilla made seconds before it was filled. The inside was carnitas, beans, rice, and salsa. Everything about it was perfect. It's amazing how much of a difference a fresh flour tortilla makes. They are not supposed to be thick and white like the ones you get a taco bell. They should be thin and almost transparent. On the weekends you can order barbecue ribs. Seemed like an odd menu item so I tried one. The barbecue sauce squirted on top kind of skeeved me out because of how closely it resembled ketchup. The meat itself was too fatty. Stick to the burrito. Next my eyes got to big for my stomach and I ordered a fish taco. The fish taco at La Perla comes with a full filet of fish. It could have been served as a fish in chips entree in a pub. Fish tacos don't really get me going. As we discussed that day, fish tacos should only be eaten while you are looking at the ocean after a long day at the beach. A strip mall in Gardena is not the right setting. Nothing I have had in Los Angeles has come close in terms of mastering the right flavor, balance of ingredients, and freshness as La Perla. If you find yourself in Gardena you must go there and it's worth the drive if you are 30-45 minutes away. read more

My friend recommended me this place so decided to give it a chance. I ordered a Asada burrito; 1 mulita adobada, 2 al pastor tacos. To be honest the mulita and tacos had no flavor on the meat; the burrito was pretty good in which the most of the flavor came from the beans. We were served chips and salsa. And, the whole time we waited the waitress never checked in on us if we needed more coffee or chips. It wasn't until 45 minutes after we summoned her to let her know we have been waiting for almost an hour now. She said they were busy, which I could be understanding had she checked in with us or informed us that it will take a while. We ordered eggs with ham and birria. The birria had bones in it, and never in my life have I had bones in my birria before. The scrambled eggs with ham seemed it was scraps of itty bits left over after cooking scrambled eggs. Home tortillas are not to forward to either. They were small and lacked the amazing flavor homemade tortillas should have. And the Mexican rice that is really hard to make it bad was not good either. Like I said, should've just cooked it myself. The menu was also very limited. They didn't even have chilaquiles. And this place may be an authentic Mexican restaurant, but it isn't good. I've had better beans and rice at El Torito. This place was so disappointing. Never returning. Even getting change was difficult. We asked for the bill, which never came. I had to get up and find the waitress to get me the bill. I had to get my dollars in quarters because they didn't have change. Tasty, authentic, and cheap. What more can you ask for? Tacos La Perla gets 5-stars alone for making all of their tortillas in plain view as you order. As for the food, I really love their wet burritos...I highly recommend. I've also had their chimichanga (good) and hard shell tacos (good, but small).
