Unplanned dinner...needed food. ...wanted Mexican. Resturant is in a strip mall next to a 7-11. Plenty of parking for a Friday night at 6PM. Order at the counter then get a table. Menu is on digital displays over the register...look behind the cashier for the specials. Spanish music playing adds to the ambiance. I ordered the Pezole Verde from the Specials and oh my goodness it was awesome. Hit it with some fresh lime and raw onions and BAM another level of awesome is unlocked. It's slightly spicy so be careful. I also ordered the burrito with beef tongue... kind of plain nothing really special about it. The language was tender though so that is a plus. I recently moved to the area from Oregon and everyone I talked to recommended Tacos Jalisco as the spot in Truckee so when my mom came to visit we stopped in for some dinner. I got the shrimp fajitas and they come with the side of beans and rice, judge if you want but I hate beans so got double rice lol. The food was great until I literally found a 1/4" screw in my rice... it just fell off the fork as I went for a bite (it looked like it at one point belonged to some kitchen appliance maybe vent or grill). My mom and I looked at each other like wtf... this doesn't actually happen. There was a line at the counter and I didn't want to startle anyone so I waited for it to clear a little and pretty discretely brought my plate up to the counter and showed the gal. What rubbed me the wrong way was they didn't seem as startled as one would think, actually hardly a reaction. They proceed to grab the plate and ask if I wanted more rice or maybe some tacos... Not only was this pretty unsanitary but a huge safety hazard especially if a child gotten the scoop of rice. read more

We ordered the following: -meat burrito with carne asada $13 -2 tacos: chicken and Al pastor $3.50 each -combination platter w/ chile relleno & taco $16 -super nachos Jalisco $13 I had the 2 tacos and they were both very good! Highly recommend al pastor and chicken. Served on double street size tortillas. Perfect to keep the meat, onions and cilantro all together. I had a few bites of the chile relleno and it was delicious! Highly recommend getting this - they gave it as an Ala carte item for $8. The nachos were great too! Lots of chips, meat (we chose carnitas), beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream and lots of cheese. We had some leftover but didn't bring them home bc we were on the road. Service is straight forward. You ordered the counter, they give you a number and you see yourself. They bring the food to you all at once. It's well decorated with Mexican art and Modelo banners. Stopped by for dinner last night and had a mixed experience. The atmosphere is authentic and the restaurant has that traditional Mexican feel you'd expect. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, which came out as a generous portion - definitely enough food to take home leftovers. As for the food, the enchiladas were pretty average. The portion size was impressive, but the chicken was bland and could have used more seasoning. The sauce was okay but nothing special, and overall the dish just lacked the bold flavors I was hoping for from a traditional Mexican spot. The prices were reasonable for the amount of food you get, so it's decent value if you're looking to fill up. In an area of the world with great Mexican food it's rare that even the most basic place can mess it up but Tacos Jalisco delivered the worst meal I have ever had. For the price of $50 we had two Buritos, a fajita and a drink - two teenagers who were very hungry after a 4 hour drive could not get even half way through. On a clear winter day, Tacos Jalisco topped off a terrific day of snow shoeing. They are a bit short handed, so bring patience. You'll be rewarded with tasty fare. Their menu is pretty big, so we actually appreciated having a bit of time to take it all in while waiting for someone to come to the register. We ordered a chile verde burrito, a regular burrito al pastor, and a couple of jamica agua frescas and found ourselves a table. The inside is pretty spacious with many tables and booths. It looks like a popular place as a stream of people came in after us at 1:30 pm on a weekday. I didn't take a picture of the regular burrito, but it was tasty. I often order al pastor to check out a new place. The meat was diced and mixed in with the rice and beans. The burrito is big enough for me to get two meals out of it. The chile verde burrito came with chile verde poured over the top and addtional rice and beas on the side. The chile verde was delicious, tender, and flavorful with a bit of heat. We didn't realize it was a plate with more rice and beans, but that's okay since both were very tasty. Now we have a go to place in Truckee! There's a help wanted sign in the window and I imagine it's hard to get help. I was in area to have fun, so the least I can do is be patient when businesses are short handed. read more

Good food, however DO NOT order over the phone. Every single time I've called in an order, the lady is passive and seems to not care at all, which is shown once you pick up your order. Every single time I've called in an order, without fail they WILL mess up your order. When you confront them about the mess up, they do not offer to make you what you actually ordered. Really sucks when you're craving something and are given food completely different. I suggest the woman taking orders repeats the order back to the customer, takes only a few seconds and will hopefully resolve their issue of messing up your order. read more

Great ingredients. Awesome service. However, to go burritos should NEVER be in a to go box - wrap it in foil! Foil is not only cheaper, but it keeps the burrito together. The last ten times I've eaten here, the burrito (while delicious) falls apart after two bites. Foil keeps that bad boy together. I am writing to management to make the decision to ditch those expensive to-go boxes and start using foil. It's the way every taqueria does it, and it's for a reason. Just ordered some finger foods for 2 adults and 2 kids. Nachos and carne asada fries. Soda was very carbonated, not tasty. No issue with changing it twice, eventually got a bottled jarritos instead. I've been coming to Tacos Jalisco for at least 20 years of my life. It's one of my favorite places to return too when I come back to the town I grew up in. Today after running 20 miles, all I wanted was a bean cheese and rice burrito. When I got the burrito and cut it in half to give some to my daughter I realized they didn't put rice. I don't like to complain but I worked hard for this burrito and I wanted what I ordered. Instead of apologizing she said I will bring you a size of rice. The problem is, that that's not what I asked for or paid for. After kindly declining and asking that she put the rice inside she took it to the back, shoved rice in the cut in half burrito and served it to me in a terrible looking pile. Literally looked like a dog took it and shook it and then spit it out. I was so disappointed and I won't be going back for a while. read more

I was not too excited about my experience when I stopped by for lunch here during my Tahoe trip a few weeks ago. My family got several carne asada burritos, salad, and plates of chicken and fries. While the service was quick enough, the food didn't meet the bar in a few ways. The burritos were dry, mine had a few pieces of what tasted like raw beef, and relatively flavorless. The sauces and condiment bottles on the table were broken, appeared to be unsanitary, and tasted expired. Chicken was very salty and a bit underdone as well. Fries were too thin and mostly burnt, but probably one of the better items compared to everything so far. Salad was good though, big serving size too. Would not recommend based on this experience, hope this review is a chance to take a second look at a few things in the kitchen and out front. read more

This is a solid, consistent, budget friendly, and fast Mexican restaurant in an old strip mall next to a tattoo parlor and 711. While driving around the lake I saw other restaurants with the same namesake and after dining there twice it makes perfect sense to me that they would expand their business around the lake. Our first visit was on a Friday at 6:00 p.m. (no line, we walked right up) placed our order at the counter (got a number) and found a place to sit (indoor and outdoor seating options available). There is one person taking your order, getting your chips and salsa, and drinks ready which slows the process. The menu is extensive across four screens displayed above the counter. I ordered a crispy taco plate (chicken and al pastor) and my mom ordered a combo enchilada and street taco plate (chicken and carne asada). Within minutes our food arrived popping hot and after a day of kayaking, swimming, and sunning I couldn't think of a more satisfying meal. It was SO good, we returned again on Sunday at 6:45 p.m. The line was VERY long but we decided to stick it out because of how quickly our food was prepared last time. The ordering process this time was challenging. There was one person behind the counter (like last time) answering phones for phone orders, answering ALL THE QUESTIONS, and they were out of many items so when customers would try to place their order they would have to figure out what to order as a replacement. Further, one of the four menu signs was out (black) which had the combo plate options. My mom ordered a la cart Fish Tacos and I tried the chicken rolled tacos. Our food was at the table by 7:20 p.m. We got our food before the group in front of us (they ordered take out) so we had to listen to them complain for 10 minutes about it while we ate our food. Pathetic and disappointing! If I could give this negative stars, I would. We were so excited to stop by this taqueria after a long day on the slopes. The food on the menu TV screen looked so promising but it was far from it!! First, the young lady taking our order never gave us a receipt. I asked her if she could bring me a copy, she gave an annoyed face and then never returned. I let it slide, whatever. My steak fajita plate was disgusting, you can tell the meat was old and then they just threw it on the cast iron only to heat it up. Not only was it dry and burnt, but it was so bland. We got two burritos, California and steak. everything inside the burritos were cold and stale!!! We waited 30 mins for a two cold burritos and a burnt pile of cow poop. Never coming back here again. Chile relleno and steak taco salad are the stars of this restaurant. However, cheese enchilada is TERRIBLE! The red sauce taste nothing like enchilada sauce - it's like they opened a bottle of ketchup, poured it on top of corn tortillas with cheese. Another miss is their chile verde. I went the other day for a late lunch before class , the girl in the front was really nice , I ordered the flauta platter which is basically 2 fried tacos with rice and beans , the food took about 30-40 minutes to be ready . The flautas we're not crunchy , it was like they were made with flour tortillas, they were soft but not in a good way , the rice was dry and lacked flavor , the beans and guacamole were good tho . Overall , I think they need to change their recipe for corn tortillas or make them crispier , and add more seasoning to the rice . I was hoping this place was going to be great after working up an appetite snowboarding wow was i wrong. When you walk in you are not greeted nicely and have to go to the counter to order then sit yourself down. You don't get complimentary chips and salsa you have to pay for them then take them to your table yourself. The plates ordered were: Chile Verde, steak plate, California burrito, fried whole fish, fried potato tacos in sauce. The rice on the plate looked old and greasy very dry, the beans were OK, both the meat plates were very soupy and lacked actual chunks of pork and steak. My daughter had the fish, so I had to try it to see if it was just me and my wife's plate to my surprise her fish was good. My sons burrito on the other hand was so bad the carne asada was very dry tasted like it'd been sitting for quite some time. The salsa for the chips was simply pico de gallo which it just chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and lime. The guacamole had no seasonings and needed salt at least. For the money we paid it would have been nice to get quality food. When our food came out it was served by the cooks in the back which is not a problem for me but when I asked for certain additions and refills there was a language barrier. This place is very busy be ready to wait in a line to order your food . There's a lot of tables and music is playing in the background. I used like this place, but it has gone down hill. We waited for 20min to order and then another 30+min to get our food. Which was sub par, my taquitos were burned and the chicken was dry, my fish taco was also over cooked. The rice seems as though it is cooked in the microwave. My husband's Chile verde plate was nothing to get excited about, the salsa "pico de gallo" was water tomato without any flavor same with the guacamole.
