Now This Is A Burrito! We have been going to Tacos El Norte as part of our regular dining out rotation for years and they never disappoint. The ladies behind the counter and also serving are super pleasant and friendly, always greeting diners with a smile, a warm Hello! and Sit Wherever You Like. I am a burrito fan and after this visit I had to post this. Burritos come three ways. All three come with a flour tortilla, filled with chicken or beef, lettuce, tomato, not too many beans and cheese for $8.99. You can also order it as Burrito Suizo Especial which also includes guacamole and sour cream, then topped with a ranchero sauce and melted cheese - our favorite way for $12.40! And for those that are super hungry, try the Papi Burrito Especial for $12.99. A mega tortilla wrap that comes out looking like a ranchero and cheese topped football. Onions and cilantro can be added by request to any of these. Large condiment bottles of homemade red and green sauces are brought to the table and use as much as you like. I prefer the green as the red is just a little to spicy for me. As my picture shows, the regular Burrito Especial is huge and we order it so we can bring home half to eat the next day. I used to get stake burritos in lz.round lake and mc Henry they had the best..since I've had round lake about 1 yr ago and did not. Like it. I tried mc Henry today and I couldn't even finish it not sure it was even steak..I think it was pot roast meat shredded and very greasy I asked mgr.if they changed there meat her response was maybe it was because I only had cheese on it really!!! read more

Although the waitress denied new ownership, there were several changes at this location. First they serve liquor. Second the salsa greatly improved from subpar to above average with spice to boot. Third the plate was huge in all proportions and tastes excellent! And the beans are more blended pinto style that totally refried. And excellent service! The steak wasn't grilled, unsure how it was cooked...no flavor and texture was so awful I couldn't even get 1/3 down. My husbands carnitas tacos were so rubbery and unflavored he's convinced it's not actual carnitas. My "cultural" culinary experiences growing up: -- "Mexican" food = Taco Bell -- "Chinese" food = canned La Choy over Uncle Ben 's light and fluffy rice, with those dried chow mein noodles on top Aaaaand that's as far as it got. Sigh. Mom's to blame, so my brother and I are making up for our lost food years and dragging her with us. Despite living in McHenry for 12 years, we'd never been to Tacos El Norte as a family, though I have no clue why. (We've been to one other Mexican joint.) Now we're very remorseful for missing out. In short: They're super awesome and have delicious food! Six of us (5 adults and 1 kiddo) came here for dinner and practically took over the restaurant a mere hour before they closed. The staff was so nice and the food was soooo good! We had various things: at least 3 of us had seafood dishes (I had tacos: shrimp and tilapia), and I think Great Aunt Norma had a ground beef taco or something. Aside from that, I don't remember what everyone else had, but LOTS of guacamole was involved: I think we ended up ordering 3 orders when all was said and done. I had a horchata which was tried by all curious parties. #backwashdoesntapplytofam It was really delicious. We're not dessert orderers, but we went all out for some reason. Three of us shared a delicious chocolate molten lava bundt cake and flan. (Yes, we finally talked Mom into trying flan!) Both were delicious in their own ways. The great waitress also gave us a complimentary tamale to try. I'm embarassed to say that this was my first tamale, but it was very good. I'm so happy that we're getting Mom out of her comfort zone, and in the process we found the awesomeness that is Tacos el Norte! I've been on a grand search for some good Mexican food since leaving Texas. Tacos El Norte had a fairly high star mark so I thought, why not? There wasn't anything particularly bad about the place, outside of throwing mozzarella cheese on a tamale. Which is kind of a terrible thing to do. But I'm past it, this is Illinois and you guys love your Pizza. The food was decent, it just wasn't really anything special. The price was great! If you're looking for some decent Mexican food for a good price, this is a probably a solid option for you. But I'm still hoping to find something better out there. read more

I was a frequent customer and liked the food here. The service not so much. One day in November 2020 I went in to pick up my to go order that I had placed. The 2 women working there that day were employees that I have recognized for years. They tried to give me a soda that I did not order. I said politely that I did not order a soda and with some attitude they commented to each other "pinche puta". I may not be Spanish but I speak the language fluently. Such rudeness from these employees. Not only is it disgusting but absolutely uncalled for as it had nothing to do with me being it was their mistake. "Pinche" is a Mexican Spanish adjective that means "f*cking" and "puta" is a vulgar word in Spanish that's understood in every Spanish-speaking country. Put together, it means a "f*cking whore". I just smiled and left. I will never ever ever return as well as all my friends and family after I told them what had happened to me here. What's next? I can foresee spitting in my food as a sick joke for them to get their jollies off. It's a shame because I also visit the Lake Zurich location and all employees there have always been polite and welcoming. I have never been treated well or warmly at the McHenry location but it was closest to my home so I sucked it up. Just an FYI to all non-hispanic customers. It's HARD to find really great Mexican food. But this place is THE BEST around my area. I've been going there for over 10 years since I moved into the area and there's just nothing like it. The Round Lake store has a lot more seating and a better environment, but the food is all the same. I have to go to Mount Prospect (La Tejanata) Heights Or Javier's Sabor Mexicano & Agave Bar In Arlington Hts. And they are both pretty pricey compared to El Norte I go out of my way to go there! read more

Was my first and LAST time coming here yesterday. The customer service on the phone was horrible, the lady was beyond rude and it even got worse when we got there to pick up our food! We had asked for our food to be separate orders on the phone, when we went to get our food the lady said she wouldnt Separate the food bc she wasnt the one who took our order. WHAT?! The other lady came and yelled at her in front of us, but it was just a horrible experience and the food wasn't good either. The food was good. I was disappointed with the quesadilla. It was on small corn soft shells instead of the traditional large flour shell. When I called and asked questions about her menu, the order taker told me that the menu on Yelp is not hers but someone's down the road. Very rude. I know how to read and I clicked the link provided by Yelp. So, if they have an incorrect menu please do something about it and not make people seem stupid. I read many other reviews about the "woman on the phone" and that she was rude. I felt the same way. I haven't been here since I was a home about 5 or years ago. I remember them being a lot more friendly and better service. I hope they don't just think that being in the community for a long time is what will keep them open. Food was really delicious! Chips, salsa and guac had amazing flavor. Grilled tilapia tacos were stellar. Hubby was not. Fan of the tamales but said the taco and the enchiladas were fantastic. Kids had nachos and quesadillas, both really great. Place is clean and food came out fast. Only 4 stars because the woman behind the register (not our waitress) got annoyed when I asked for our check after waiting more than 20 minutes AFTER finishing our food (and clearing the table). Then, the waitress didn't split our bill and the women at the register got so annoyed she started talking about us in Spanish, not realizing that a member of our group is fluent in it. Awkward!!!
