Ay ay ay! We pulled into the parking lot at Tacos Ameca on our way from SF to Big Sur. Half of us were hungry and all of us were enticed by the waft of smoke coming off hot coals out the front. Two burritos were ordered and two of us had mad regrets about not ordering burritos also. The al pastor burrito was the best I've ever eaten. The meat was smoking hot (that's the story behind the hot coals out the front), all charred and succulent, enrobed in red-colored rice, habanero sauce, buttery avocado and a soft flour tortilla. I was there today and what a mistake! Over priced food and it wasn't even all that. The menudo was chewy (tripe) It was Horrible and Cheesy chorizo platter was very small. My family and I came here with a large church group. At first we were worried that there wasn't going to be enough time or enough seats since we had arrived after 9:00 p.m. but the staff was very accommodating and work fast so we were very happy. We ordered about eight tacos bean and cheese burrito at quesadilla and a wet burrito the total with drinks came out to about $103. Of course the tacos we ordered were regular tacos and then we also ordered the potato tacos which were so good that we are going back to order again and again and again. Went here on a recommendation by a coworker who frequents this place. Let me tell you that this may be one of the best taquerias I've ever been too. The burrito was huge and on a handmade corn tortilla! The chicharron tacos were a little spicy but awesome. My wife had the chicken taco plate. 4 yummy crispy chicken tacos that were delicious. My wife and I stopped here during a road trip and were excited to see fish tacos on the menu. We decided to get a fish taco plate and were so disappointed in what was given to us. Inside our covid friendly takeout clamshell was two pieces of fried fish, beans, and rice. Inside another smaller clamshell were 4 tortillas. That's it. No lettuce, pico, sour cream, guac, anything! Just fried fish and tortillas. $17 EACH for something we could have bought at a Lucky store for under $5 TOTAL is a bit outrageous. And it's not like they didn't have time or the manpower to make the meal as there was a whole crew of folks in the kitchen standing and waiting to go. I'm a relatively new customer - I've been three times total, all during the stay-at-home order and overall, I am fairly pleased with Tacos Ameca. Highlights: al pastor taco and housemade tortilla. The al pastor is some of the most flavorful al pastor I've had, and I think something that would take it up a notch is if it had pineapple chunks in it. It's juicy, spicy and salty and pairs perfectly with the green and red salsa, the onions, and lime. Their tortillas are handmade each day right in front of you, and have a really good mouthfeel (yes, I said mouthfeel). Also, they give a TON of meat. I feel like 1 taco = 2 tacos at other places. Other things I've tried: tacos (suadero, carne asada), vampiro con cabeza, chicharron taco. The suadero (brisket) is still really good, and I'll probably be getting it when I go again. The carne asada is decent too, but nothing special. I'd pass on the vampiro - the hardened tortilla isn't really enjoyable and the cabeza (cheek meet) in general was pretty bland. The chicharron is a hard pass - I regret spending $4.50 on what tasted like soft globs of pork fat and hardened pork meat in a red sauce that was too salty... Overall, I'd highly recommend stick with the al pastor taco if it's your first time. I'm curious to try their birria, which is only available on weekends. read more

Came here as a pit stop before heading to SoCal. We ordered steak tacos, Al pastor tacos, cabeza tacos, regular steak burrito, and horchata. The portions for the tacos are huge! I typically eat 5-6 tacos; drunk me can easily eat 7 tacos. So when I struggled with 3 tacos, you can only imagine how big they are. Each taco cost $4.50 which is a great deal for how much food you get. Besides the portion size, the tacos tasted pretty average. The homemade tortillas were okay; they fell apart every time we tried to eat the tacos so it got pretty messy. I didn't try the burrito but my bf said it was pretty good. The horchata had too much cinnamon. Bf said they gave us the bottom of the barrel horchata so we got all the cinnamon :( read more

Fave taco spot in Gilroy. I am very proud to live here, I think there are 21 spots for tacos here. At Ameca the meats are amazing, so flavorful and melt in your mouth. My favorite being the carnitas of course. I can't not order them every time I go, so my ability to try out the whole menu is a work in progress. Everything is great, you can't really go wrong! Food being great, I wouldn't mind a little more help with my order, sometimes I feel a little rushed. The food was amazing. I originally went In for the menudo but they had just ran out so I settled on the birria de chivo which was mouthwatering good. The fact that menudo was out only told me that it was that delicious. I also had a quesadilla with asada. I also added frijoles de la Hoya and fresh avocado whip was the icing on the cake. I am definitely returning the next time that I find myself in Gilroy. The service was phenomenal. I suggest that if you want up eat here to arrive early and bring a smaller vehicle because the parking can be a bit tricky other than that it's a no brainer to eat here. The ambiance was that of a normal Mexican restaurant but you have so many options to choose from at this restaurant. Make sure to bring an empty stomach because the food is very filling. First I am going to say that the food is authentic. My dad an I came to order out during the virus stay at home order. I ordered a Pastor wet burrito and my dad ordered a Chicken burrito. Both were delicious. But both were hot nor mild, so next time we will try to order mild meals. My only suggestion is to put less rice in the burrito. Rice is a filer and I'd rather see more meat and vegetables than a ton of rice. Rice gives you lots of carbs, esp if you are working all day long, but there are many of us that do not need all those carbs or have sensitivity to carbs (diabetes). Just a suggestion. Tastes totally mexican. The tacos are bigger sized, so we ended up with a full belly. They even make the most delicious corn tortillas right there. They had karaoke of popular mexican songs. To order you go to the end and right, then wait for your number to be called and pickup at the barbon the left. Sauces are right next to the pickup area. Extra points for having baby chairs. I made an order via the phone, thinking it would bypass the wait in-person. When I got to the store, I walked past the ordering booth, thinking I would be able to pick up my tacos quickly at the pick-up line, but they told me I still had to make my order at the ordering booth. They had me when I walked up to the plumes of smoke from the outdoor grill, and I was liiiiivng for the dudes full blast karaoke-ing in the corner. Also why is everyone a good singer? We had the super burrito with carnitas and the asada quesadilla. Both were . Meat was tender where it needed it to be and crispy around the edges throughout both items. The tortillas were perfectly steamed and fried, no overly soggy or dry parts. The bean cheese cream and rice layers were a perfect compliment to the robust flavors of meat and a great vehicle to sop up the rivers of joy (sauce). The salsas (we tried them all) were all distinct, full-flavored, well-seasoned and tasted fresh. I can't possibly communicate the flavors that linger in/on/through/at my mouth in this review, but please understand that I am a California kid who's lived in the Bay Area, LA. and The OC. As a whole, averaged out to two stars (kudos for the homemade tortillas.) Would eat the food again if in the immediate area and someone is adamant about it, but nothing impressive nor as anticipated after being recommended by a friend. Happened to be in the area and remembered this restaurant coming up specifically in conversation. "It has to be the location with the red exterior." After arriving at the red corner building with excitement and extreme hunger all around, we were disappointingly met with a line that took nearly 40 minutes to get through- at 8:45PM on a Wednesday evening. There were about 7-8 visible staff doing various things in the kitchen; there was one cashier. We tried to remain as patient and positive as possible, keeping our eyes on the prize of yummy tacos and burritos that would leave all forgiven and forgotten. After waiting in the extended wait of a line and finally arriving at second in line, we realized they offered beers/micheladas. We realized there was a drinks menu hidden against the dark back wall; I looked around to scope out which drinks everyone else had gone for. Only two beers around, nothing fancy. We opted for their house michelada with shrimp to soften the blow of knowing we'd likely be waiting some more time before getting our food. We were the only ones to order a michelada while present...ONE michelada in the forty minutes we stood in line. It took another 20 minutes to make ONE drink with no other drinks in sight. It takes another 10 minutes to complete. At this point, my partner and I are both pacing and sweet talking my hangry 16 year old...contemplating our life choices, frustrated we were too deep into waiting to abort mission and leave. 10 minutes after the drink, food is finally ready, but not without two other customers behind us getting their takeout food first. Cold cheese on fries, dry, tough, overcooked asada and pastor... I'm all about the positive reviews. This place just left a really "blehhhh" taste in my mouth; no pun intended. Coming from long beach my friends and I come to gilroy for a church event and have been visiting this place 3 times a year for the last 5 years. At first we loved everything about this place, generous portions friendly service, and the awesome loud music and karaoke. The meats here are just tooo good, nothing in long beach that tops this spot in my opinion. Anyways the last couple of times have been terrible. The service has just gone downhill. Being Asian I've taught myself and made the effort to learn the numbers in spanish but anything past that good luck. Most of the people making your food cannot speak or understand english so it can get annoying especially for both you and them and really frustrating when trying to just ask for simple things. But we definitely hit the jackpot during our last visit. My brother found multiple baby roaches in his wet burrito after eating like 75% of it. We spoke with the lady and told her about our situation and she said she would make us another and so we agreed. She started talking to her workers about it in spanish and they just laughed at the whole thing. 30 minutes later still nothing and thats when I figured we had enough and just walked out. We honestly did not even want the burrito but just wanted to see that they would atleast make up for what happened. As someone who cannot speak or understand spanish it can get pretty rough (even if you're polite), especially with the long lines, your order can definitely get lost and asking about things other then what you ordered might just tick them off. Cheap, authentic and big portions! What more could you ask for? I stopped here with my family on the way up from a roadtrip. As soon as we pulled in, I felt like I was back in Mexico. This place is the real deal. The al pastor tacos were actually al pastor. It was packed and there was banda karaoke. Seriously just like being back with my relatives. This may cause a bit of culture shock to non-Mexicans but it made me feel at home. The line was long but moved quickly. The cashier advised me on what to order and was very helpful. Even with added avocado, the price was ridiculously cheap and came out quickly. I ordered two tacos for dinner which were more than enough. I had a hard time finishing my food.
