I recently had to adopt a heart-healthier diet due to medical concerns, so I've been replacing red meat with chicken and fish and being much more careful about fatty foods. I've even been using AI to help me find healthier restaurant options, which is how I came across Tacos America. It recommended the restaurant because they grill their chicken, so we were excited to try it. When we arrived, we saw them grilling meat outside and thought, "Perfect! This is exactly what we're looking for." Since the tacos are topped with vegetables, we felt like this would be a great, healthier option. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. While we were waiting, the people ahead of us ordered tripe. The tripe was being heated on the Blackstone in lard, and you could see it sizzling in the lard. After they removed the tripe and served it, it was time to prepare our tacos. They put our grilled chicken on that same surface with the same lard that had just been used for the tripe. I'm not someone who likes to complain, so I didn't say anything at the time. Looking back, I wish I had. I understand that they need to heat the meat before serving it, but if you are advertising grilled chicken as an option, customers should be able to expect that chicken to remain a healthier choice. At the very least, customers should be told if their food is going to be heated in lard and given the opportunity to say no. For someone like me, the entire reason for ordering chicken instead of fatty meats is to avoid exactly that. If I wanted my chicken cooked in lard, I could have ordered something else. It was especially frustrating because we specifically chose this restaurant believing we were making a healthier choice. As for the tacos themselves, they were good. Unfortunately, I ended up taking the chicken out of the tacos and only ate about 1/3 of it because I didn't feel comfortable eating all of it after seeing it heated in lard. I hated wasting the food, but I'm trying to take my diet seriously for my health. I really hope Tacos America considers this. If you offer grilled chicken as a healthier option, please don't put it on a surface covered in lard without telling the customer. There may be people ordering chicken for medical or dietary reasons who cannot eat lard or added fats. A simple question or warning would have made a huge difference. The tacos were good, but unfortunately, the way the chicken was handled completely defeated the reason we chose them in the first place. read more

I was staying in Gilroy for the night and this place got good reviews so me and my boyfriend tried it. The inside was very bright with walls of yellow and orange paint and kind of festive. Parking can be difficult and tight there was barely one 1 spot left that we parked in. We ordered the mixed fajita plate which was $26 which came with chicken, steak, and shrimp with bell peppers and onions. It came with 4 tortillas, lettuce, rice, and beans. There was a high school wrestling team that had a huge order before us and I thought I would have to wait a long time for food but the food came out surprisingly fast in 15 min! The food was good. They also have a salsa bar where you can get whatever salsa you want. The prices were kind of high in my opinion for a casual mom and pop Mexican restaurant but the fajita plate did come with a lot of food. read more

This place use to be good. Food prices keep going up, and up, and up, and it's not inflation. lol Portions have gotten smaller than when I first started going here. I've been here since they were just a food truck next to the Paul's Liquor on Farrell and Monterey. You pay about $6 dollars or so for a taco that is just "okay" read more

Probably the worst burrito I've had. What the heck, this place looks hella authentic, felt like I was in TJ. Until you look at the price. $6 for a taco, and burritos starting at $12. We got burritos because supposedly they are known for it. My $12 regular burrito listed rice, beans, onions, cilantro, and choice of meat. I chose carne Asada. I swear, it was the saddest burrito ever. I live in SD, so our burritos down there are amazing, was hoping the same. The burrito was so sad, it was super small for it too. I took a pic of it next to my hands, which are small in general. They dice up the meat super tiny, so it gets dried out. There was no onions or cilantro in there. I asked for no beans. Burrito was on the thin side too, half was tortilla. I would say their tortilla was good and fresh! There was no flavor in the meat and no flavor in general, super plain. Meat was also chewy, got some weird parts. But a good thing was their salsas. It was really good! You can drench the burrito in their salsas to give it flavor. I would not come here again. Or recommend it. The guy grilling meats outside smelled so good too. So disappointed. read more

Really delicious Pastor but definitely not a value at $29 for a taco plate and an aqua fresca and the counter service is def lacking personality...the cooks were friendly enough though the portions are decent and the salsa bar is fresh and amazing! Used to go to Tacos Ameca pre pandemic, one of my favorite places. Honestly disappointed now. Reviews my receipt to realize that I was charged for EVERY SINGLE TOPPING on a super carne asada taco "with everything" without disclosure. Base price for a taco with meat is $5! Was charged for, grilled jalapeno and grilled onion, beans and guacamole & cheese. Ended up being close to $8 per taco which is crazy. I don't mind paying this price at all, I hate not being told about extra fees for something that's advertised as a super taco already. Robbery. Never again. Robo al cliente en cobrar extra por cosas que viene en un taco normal en casi todas taquerías, y sin aviso. Nunca jamás. read more

8 dollar per taco for adding basic toppings like onions, beans (literally the cheapest of ingredients). Laughable. Avoid this place.

Bad service, order incorrect, charged extra for stuff we didn't ask. Overall just bad service, very disappointing

Today was my first trip here and it was awesome! I can't wait to come back and try all the other yummy menu items. Fresh tortillas made every day already make this place stand out but the salsa bar is exceptional! There was a guacamolito salsa, a chunky roasted tomato salsa (molcahete?), a red taco sauce, and a green taco sauce. All of them were great but my favorite was the molcahete salsa. I barely skimmed the menu and Choriquezo popped out at me as one of their specials. It's was a generous portion of chorizo flat top grilled with cheese, piled over and under 4 homemade flour tortillas. You basically make tacos out of the gooey concoction. It was a great way for me to try out all the salsas. I also got a Chile Verde taco and that did not disappoint. The Chile flavor was great and the pork was nice and tender. It was about when I took my first bite that I noticed the Al pastor on the vertical rotisserie in the kitchen, that's definately on my radar for my next visit. I'm rarely in Gilroy but I have a new reason to come back. This place rocks! Give'em a try! read more

Tacos are incredibly expensive! I went there once since moving from San Jose to Gilroy. Nope.. I pass. Not even Super Taqueria is this expensive. Plus not as good as them. Food is delicious and servings are generous. Handmade tortillas are great. Staff isn't super friendly but they also aren't outright rude so no big deal. Found this spot in the middle of nowhere while visiting my aunt in Gilroy. I was a little shocked at the prices which seem a quite high but once you see the size of your order it all makes sense. Portions are ginormous! The torta al pastor I had was enough for two meals if not more, despite my attempt to power through it. The meat is so perfectly made and flavorful. It's is everything al pastor should be. This is honestly one of the best tortas I've ever had! They also make their own tortillas in house so tacos and burritos are also a must. I had a pretty disappointing experience at Ameca 1 last time I went, however ! I was in the area and decided to give this place another try. my mouth is watering just thinking about how DELICIOUS and fresh the food was. This location is a little different than the others because you order on the left separate from the kitchen and pick up on the right. The tortillas are fresh, the pastor was spot on, I do think the quality difference could be from weekday to weekend since it's busy on weekends. If you come here remember the tacos are HUGE, like giant. & don't forget to add salsa from the salsa bar ! read more

This location isn't as enjoyable as the first one. The parking is actually worse than the original. The prices seem to be a little higher and the amount of food received was less. I will say that the food itself tastes just as delicious. The Pastor plate comes with marinate pork (pastor), rice, beans and 4 handmade tortillas. The tortillas are the best part of either Tacos Ameca, but the pastor isn't far behind. read more

Mehhh!!! There's not much to say here. Tacos Ameca was "good" at one point, but no longer decent to me. They're known for their fresh tortillas and al pastor, but honestly, the tortillas are way too thick and the al pastor is extremely over cooked, making them super dry and also very salty. They do load up your taco with meat and give you an extra tortilla, but even then, it's really not worth eating here. Two stars because one is a low blow and they do have 'OK' service. read more

We usually order al pastor burritos from here and love them, but yesterday after our long drive from being out of town we decided to change it up and order carne asada fries (3orders) as main courses. Glad I asked what they come with cuz I found out they add ketchup and mustard!! What?! I've never heard of adding ketchup and mustard on carne asada fries. So of course we said hold the ketchup and mustard. Come home excited to eat after hours of driving to then be so disappointed and angry to find hardly any fries, the cheese they add is nacho cheese instead of melted shredded cheese- big difference, and they added a ton of ketchup!! Fries, ton of ketchup, nacho cheese, sour cream and meat of your choice. Disgusting combo, overpriced, bad quality and far from authentic. They should really take this off their menu! I wish I would have taken pictures. Waste of food and money because we couldn't eat it. read more

Pastor was really dry and oily, tortilla was crumbling apart, I've been here multiple times and it's generally been about the same.

I'm sorry but I will not be going back to this place. The welcoming was null an avoided by the workers. We had to ask for the process to order. I guess you have to be a custom to the Tijuana help yourself. It was clean at the tables we chose to sit. Our number was called in record time, which was nice. Now to fend for napkin, eating utensils. The utensils were the cheapest possible an cutting was a terrific challenge, the taste was good, but the burrito was COLD. Finally I decided to take the food home to heat up. That was very inconvenient. $43 and we had to take it home and warm it to eat. Won't be back bc of cold food an unpleasant customer service. read more

I don't know what happened to this place. I used to love this location for their huge burritos and quesadillas. I ordered a super burrito with chicken. When i got home, I found the $13 super burrito had only rice, beans and a only a little chicken. The chicken was cut into little tiny squares and it was extremely dry and had charred pieces. There was no cheese and no sour cream. The huge burritos of the past are no more. One burrito used to almost be too much, but now one isn't enough and the prices went up. Avocado is an up charge. They didn't even include any salsa or napkins. read more
