I had to ask the guy bringing water and tortilla chips who our server was. Once our server arrived she was very nice and answered our menu questions. I ordered the the spicy Mamacita and my friend ordered the pina colada. Both drinks looked cool but mine was very sweet, not really spicy at all and was tiny for $15. I think I mostly paid for the presentation part...flower, popsicle, etc. We both ordered the 3 taco trio and the food came out before long. I had a mahi mahi, carne asada and a taco macho. The server was super friendly and checked in on us frequently over the course of the evening. The restaurant has several large screen TV's with three out of four showing boxing matches. There was great music playing but unfortunately it was too loud for a mostly empty restaurant. The menu had a variety of Mexican dishes but I was surprised to see sushi and Italian dishes as well. For drinks, my husband had a shot of 'sippin' tequila and I had a Paloma. The Paloma was rather bland; it's the only way I can describe it - just a little off. The chips were good and the salsa was very good - just the right amount of kick. My husband ordered enchiladas suizas. They came four to a plate with green sauce. Lovely presentation but no rice and beans. I guess we expected rice and beans on a dinner entree. He commented the meal was ok. It was served warm but not hot. I ordered the chicken taquitos. Four to a plate with generous toppings (cheese, lettuce, sour cream and avocado). My taquitos were not hot and barely warm. Maybe there was too much cold topping on top? The shredded chicken was burnt to a crisp on the ends but pretty tasty in the middle. Unfortunately, one of the taquitos had completely charred chicken throughout (not edible). I recently had to adopt a heart-healthier diet due to medical concerns, so I've been replacing red…read moremeat with chicken and fish and being much more careful about fatty foods. I've even been using AI to help me find healthier restaurant options, which is how I came across Tacos America. It recommended the restaurant because they grill their chicken, so we were excited to try it. When we arrived, we saw them grilling meat outside and thought, "Perfect! This is exactly what we're looking for." Since the tacos are topped with vegetables, we felt like this would be a great, healthier option. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. While we were waiting, the people ahead of us ordered tripe. The tripe was being heated on the Blackstone in lard, and you could see it sizzling in the lard. After they removed the tripe and served it, it was time to prepare our tacos. They put our grilled chicken on that same surface with the same lard that had just been used for the tripe. I'm not someone who likes to complain, so I didn't say anything at the time. Looking back, I wish I had. I understand that they need to heat the meat before serving it, but if you are advertising grilled chicken as an option, customers should be able to expect that chicken to remain a healthier choice. At the very least, customers should be told if their food is going to be heated in lard and given the opportunity to say no. For someone like me, the entire reason for ordering chicken instead of fatty meats is to avoid exactly that. If I wanted my chicken cooked in lard, I could have ordered something else. It was especially frustrating because we specifically chose this restaurant believing we were making a healthier choice. As for the tacos themselves, they were good. Unfortunately, I ended up taking the chicken out of the tacos and only ate about 1/3 of it because I didn't feel comfortable eating all of it after seeing it heated in lard. I hated wasting the food, but I'm trying to take my diet seriously for my health. I really hope Tacos America considers this. If you offer grilled chicken as a healthier option, please don't put it on a surface covered in lard without telling the customer. There may be people ordering chicken for medical or dietary reasons who cannot eat lard or added fats. A simple question or warning would have made a huge difference. The tacos were good, but unfortunately, the way the chicken was handled completely defeated the reason we chose them in the first place.

Now, I always have this thing about Tacos Autlense in East San Jose. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best taquería in the country. This place comes close. The window for ordering is outside, at the front of the building. There is a menu board to the left of that window. It seems really typical with tacos and burritos, but they have a column that shows their seafood options. I got three carne asada tacos and my buddy got a super carne asada burrito. With an horchata and a Jarritos Limón, it came to just under $19.00. It sounds a little high, but I think it was okay because of the drinks. Many places charge $2.99 just for horchata, even though they're small. I also asked for lettuce and tomatoes. It's funny, I ordered in Espanglés/Spanglish and I'm not sure it was 100% necessary but it went very smoothly. It was ready VERY quickly--unnaturally quickly. We could hear that they were cooking, maybe grilling all the meat ahead of time. The dining room is very...Formica, and tired. It's as though they found tables from the 1970s and got some newer chairs (from the 1980s?) and put them around the room. The thing is--I don't care. The taste was amazing.
