Ok! Different!! Not sure exactly how I'd describe it!
I saw that this place was around the corner from my hotel in the Grand Junction downtown area, it had pretty good reviews, and I love tacos!! So I walked over there to check it out. I was not surprised to see that their menu was not traditional Mexican food. I really do like traditional hole in the wall real Mexican food places. This is not that kind of place.
The menu showed that their hot fried chicken and al pastor tacos has strawberries in it!! What?? I dont believe in mixing fruit with food. Fruit is their own food group listed under fruit and in most cases, including pineapple on pizza, should be eaten separately - in my opinion (dont hate). I decided that I was going to keep an open mind, so I ordered one of each, the al pastor, the skirt steak, and the hot fried chicken - not sure what part of Mexico that is from (open mind, not traditional - I kept saying to myself). I also ordered an order of chips and salsa.
The food came and it looked great. I was pretty hungry at this point, so I dove into the hot fried chicken taco. I completely forgot that I had told myself that I would start taking pictures of some of the food. Hence the reason we have pictures for the skirt steak and al pastor tacos, but not the fried chicken. Oh well.
The chicken was on a taco sized flour tortilla with cabbage, fennel, strawberries (though I couldn't see any of them) and a spicy sauce. The flavor was good, the crisp of the chicken was good, the only criticism I have is that the chicken was warm at best, more of a luke warm.
I took a bite of the skirt steak taco and felt something crunchy that I hadn't expected. I checked the menu and saw that there were chopped pistachios in it. WTF?? Ok, wait!! It was actually pretty good. It too came on a taco sized flour tortilla and according to the menu it had a cucumber serrano sauce and queso fresco.
The pork belly al pastor taco was also served on a taco sized flour tortilla. It had pickled onions, strawberry (couldn't see them) and corn shoot (WTF is a corn shoot) I noticed some sort of dry bits sprinkled on top, checking the menu it looks like that was the salsa Seca or dried salsa. The flavor of the meat and toppings were really good.
I like it HOT, so I asked for some jalapenos or hot salsa. The server brought me a little teeny tiny bowl of chopped serrano's and a small container of their hot salsa. I may be a gringo, but I like it HOT. The salsa was really good. If should would have ever come back to check on me I would have asked for some more, instead I had to ration the salsa - LOL. I guess my lazy ass could have gotten up and asked for more!! Next time.
Overall it was a pretty good experience. The food was good, the prices were reasonable, the atmosphere was relaxed and casual. I would go back if I ever get an opportunity to go back to Grand Junction. read more
