This place was such a pleasant surprise! We ate here while visiting family and it was exactly what I was looking for when craving good Mexican food. The restaurant is relatively small, but we had no issue getting a table for 5. The staff was super attentive, friendly and quick. The food was DELICIOUS! The portions are really generous and the flavors were amazing. I had the 3 dish combination and chose a crispy chile relleno, a chimichanga and a tostado. Everything tasted amazing. I also had a small margarita which was served in a small pitcher which was also delicious to have with meal. I came here for the first time 3 years ago and thought this is the best Mexican spot I've ever been to, and I've traveled a lot and have been to many Mexican restaurants. During our trip to Colorado, we decided to make a stop at Grand Junction and had another opportunity to visit this place again! I had the carne asada last time, and I had it again this time! My hubs had the pollo asado. Plates are huge! My carne asada was cooked perfectly, thinly sliced, but well portioned and very filling. It was very tender and very juicy. Very good portion of rice and the beans were authentically made. The pollo asado was very tender, citrusy, and very juicy as well! We also had the house margarita. We asked for the margarita on the rocks, but there was so much ice that it almost looked blended. Very strong and great flavor though. I love the decor / wood carvings of the chairs. It's a small restaurant, but it's set up nicely to maximize space and occupancy. Service was fast and friendly. The margaritas were large, the plates were even bigger and honestly, it was a solid dinner. My friend and I stopped in on our first night in town and thought a margarita just would hit the spot. Ay yi yi. C'mon Grand Junction. You can do better! Nice little spot in a stand alone building adjacent to a strip center. Typical decor with nice booths and a semi-open kitchen. Service is very friendly. Drink service today was slow with no refills on our iced tea, but that was ok. Chips come out promptly. Store variety chips come with a decent homemade salsa rojo. Thin with just a little kick, you might want to get your drinks before digging into the salsa in order to offset the mild spiciness. The problem was the food. Good. Not great. At least not 4+ stars great. Again, there was nothing bad, but with such an amazing Mexican population in GJ, this is the best we can do? The lunch burrito was a small-ish, open tortilla filled with unremarkable pulled beef, topped with a little red sauce. The accompanying Mexican arroz was dry and barely enough to cover the remaining area of the plate. My copilot on this visit is keeping keto, so he had the puerco. Seasoned and pulled puerco. Completamente solo (con tortillas de maíz). He asked for their verde salsa, more of a taco salsa, to raise the meat to another level. His verdict - meh. Good, but not great. The attractive one in our group had a quesadilla de camarones. This brought a large quesadilla cut in wedges. Miss L said the shrimp were "not good", and she left most of the 'dilla uneaten. We were in a working lunch, so we did not try the adult beverages. There is a full bar. Readers of my reviews will note that iced tea is a pet peeve of mine, and the good news is that the iced tea at Agovero's is excellent. All in all, the food at Agovero's Mexican Experience is good. I travel a lot though, and we have experienced the best of Mexican food in places like LA, San Diego, Texas, Atlanta, Salt Lake (yes, Red Iguana!), and of course in many Mexican cities. Agavero's could easily pump up the authenticity, quality and passion with just a few simple fixes. Please don't consider this a bad review. It's not. It's just a challenge to do better. read more

My husband and I are visiting from Texas, and although this isn't the "Tex-mex" we're used to, the food was great! I never felt guilty eating my queso smothered burrito, all the ingredients were fresh! My husband got a shrimp and bacon dish that he said was a little bland but nothing some salt and pepper couldn't fix. The service though. Irene was phenomenal. A true agent of service. Used to be our favorite, and we posted fave reviews, but they have really gone downhill since COVID. We went back and the difference was like night and day. Cheaper, tougher fajitas, lack luster enchiladas, even the salsa, which used to be quite good, is now far below par. I don't know if they changed management, or are cutting costs, or have new cooks but what I know is we won't be going back. El Mescal is heads and shoulders above this place and has easily replaced Agavero's as our favorite. read more
