Homemade tortillas, Mom and Pop (literally, I think), hole-in-hall. Trashcan tacos are the best and a great deal!

The tortillas are homemade and the salsa is good. I recommend their unique taco Rey taco which has a bit of everything.

Wasn't able to get a picture because I ate my tacos so fast. I was next-door enjoying the coffee flights and decided to grab a taco. I got a potato and egg with cheese and use the green salsa. It was good. Your averahe taco, but the service was great. They have a taco ready quickly, so I could enjoy it with my coffee next door. Taco Rey is my go to spot for weekend breakfast tacos! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the Taco Cabana assortment my boss will bring in during the week for morning meetings, but this is San Antonio and standards are high; especially on a Sunday morning. Their flour and corn tortillas made in house fresh, as are the fillings. Watching everything hit that flat top knowing it will soon be ready for devouring gets the day started right. I usually go for a carne guisada w/cheese and onions on corn tortillas, and the classic bacon, egg, and cheese on flour. They have a ton more on the menu (including actual breakfast plates) but love my usual order so much I haven't tried them unfortunately, haha. read more

Well known source for two things only.... TRASH CAN TACOS, and inconsistent rude service that ticks me off. They actually do have other stuff on the menu, but it didn't get ordered twice. I can always depend on this to satisfy. One is enough. If Taco Rey could even say hi as I walked up to the counter I might squeeze out an extra star. But like a gas station with the right price, I'll keep going back, despite the service. Their overstuffed homemade tortillas with wonderful mixed textures of meats, cheese, beans, and who knows what will leave little room to add salsa. Dining space is small and uninviting counter help is as friendly as a drive through window. Found this place by a random google search. Not a lot of reviews on yelp, so we didn't know what to expect. They served warm chips and salsa when we sat down. My friend got horchata and al pastor taco. Lots of meat and the horchata wasn't too sweet. I was "adventurous" and got a torta. The bread was FRESH and the sandwich was tasty. You pay at the counter when you leave and we saw them making fresh flour tortillas. This place isn't fancy but it hit the spot! I'd absolutely recommend it. We saw that there was a local taco shop doing a promo but their line was out the WAZOO so we decided to try Taco Rey after the urgings of our nephew. The offerings of types of tacos were unlike ones we had seen at any other taco shop- including the nopales and egg taco that my hubs tried which had a fresh taste, and the Potato a la mex which was large chunks of potato with diced grilled veggies. I went with my ever so usual bean and egg and hubs with potato and egg. The red salsa was a kick- I told my mother in law it might actually kill her (haha). The green was very mild. The downside was the ride home lead to the bag leaking grease (womp womp). We will probably return with the nephew to try the tortas sometime soon :) read more

My co-worker and I order 20+ breakfast tacos here weekly and they always come out in timely manner. The cashiers are usually pretty friendly, and you definitely get a 'dive' taco shop feel. Personally, the breakfast tacos never disappoint, but they also aren't anything life changing. I saw that this place had good pastor Tortas in the express news online article. I went. By myself for lunch. Ordered a pastor torts with a side of borracho beans. Waitress gives me chips salsa. The green is spicy and good. I take two bites of the torta. Stand up walk to the counter. Who made this torta?!? I ask. I hear. He did. I say. Sir. This is the best pastor torta I've had. Since then. I've gone on a biweekly occasion. Barbacoa. Solid. Menudo. Solid. Ham egg a la Mexicana. Solid. The flavors of food are okay but the portions are tiny at least when you order to go. Might as well go to a different spot get a bigger serving. 3.50 for a carne guisada is reasonable but not when it has like 4 pieces of meat, come on. And I've tried breakfast tacos and fajitas from here and they are all the same tiny size. You are definitely not getting your money's worth. I got a "taco king" burrito. I feel like I was pre judged since the only 2 options verbally told were beef/chicken... I asked for Barbacoa. I requested rice added inside. The burrito I got only had Barbacoa and rice. No beans, no sour cream, and only cheese on top. I'm not even sure if this has gravy on top. I won't be going back smh. read more

I agree with the previous writer about the tortas al pastor; they are fantastic! The guisada and carne asada tacos are also excellent. The salsas are made fresh; I can't decide if I like the traditional red sauce, the spicy green sauce or the hot habanero sauce the most. I guess it depends on your mood. This was my first stop on my mission to find some breakfast tacos that are actually flavorful on the northside and Taco Rey failed to meet that challenge. I ordered one bean and cheese and one papas rancheras. The tortillas did not have that homemade taste, for starters. Secondly, the beans were runny and flavorless. The cheese would have helped if they would have actually put a significant amount on the taco, but there was hardly any. The papas were lacking ranchera sauce - it did have onion and bell pepper, but not enough to add any significant difference in flavor. This place is less than mediocre, so I will have to continue my search. I would not reccomend if your looking for the best breakfast taco. read more

It's been hard to find a good breakfast burrito here in San Antonio but I have hit the jackpot. I ordered the Egg, Bean burrito and they were nice enough to add Nopales to the burrito. The nopales were sweet, cooked perfectly and the beans were delicious. I will definitely be going back. read more

Not a bad place to get a breakfast taco or burrito. I ordered a breakast burrito of chorizo and egg all the way wich came with cheese rice and beans. I also go the verde sala which was pretty spicy. It made for a good, filling breakfast that was a good price. I noticed that they had tacos al pastor on their lunch and dinner menu. I developed a love for al pastor when I lived in California so I'll definitely be back to try it, and if it's good enough I'll re-review this place and give it another star. read more

I forgot why I stopped coming here for tacos. Taco Rey is over priced for the tiny tacos they serve. $2.50 for a carne guisada taco??? And they always seem to tack on a .40 charge everytime I go and claim its a to-go charge or a styrofoam cup charge! Originally, I came across this restaurant from my work. Ever since then I have become glued to this place due to the convenience, speedy service and addictive spicy salsa. The inside isn't anything to be impressed by, but then again if you're hungry and aren't too picky... who really cares. I almost exclusively order their breakfast tacos, though I have stopped by a few times for their reasonably priced lunch specials. If you're in a hurry in the morning and crave a delicious Papas Rancheras, Migas or a plethoras selection of other tasty tacos, then I highly recommend this place. read more
