Recommend: Yes. Eat the tacos de papa and get some fresh tortillas! Food: The tacos de papa (potato tacos) were so delicious and flavorful. We ended up getting two orders. Had we knows they were going to be that good, that's probably all we would have needed to order. . They were made fresh and came hot to the table. We also order tacos de carne asada. They were good and flavorful. Lastly we heard about the torta ahogada; we ordered it with carne asada. Now we know by the name that this is an ahoga (drowned) torta into a consomé, so we did expect some sogginess but in the end, we determined the texture was not for us. It had great flavor but too soggy and messy for our liking. Ambiance: The restaurant was very clean and humble, there was music playing, and it was very quiet. Authentic Traditional Mexican Menudo with freshly made tortillas! Bite size meat cuts. I ordered a small 16 oz bowl .... plenty of meat. Caldo was thick not thin or watery. Spice was lightly mild. Served with 4 soft tortillas, mmm smelled fresh! I also ordered their cafe de olla. I could taste the canela and piloncillo. Took me back to my childhood. Great service too. First off let me start by saying I honestly want to give this place 4.5 SOLELY based off my personal preference. I like my food salted and seasoned, HOWEVER, I do understand places that don't do it. They leave it up to the customer to choose how much salt or seasoning they want (which the waitress kindly provided in different shakers). Now this restaurant is definitely a five star place regardless of my personal preferences! The food tastes homemade! I literally felt like I was in Mexico sitting inside looking out on the plaza in a tiny restaurant. It was very nostalgic for me. The music, the bare walls, and overall humbleness of the place. I ordered pozole verde with everything. Radish, cabbage, and lime on the side! *chefs kiss* My husband ordered the chilaquiles rojos con huevo and let me tell you...HE LEFT THAT PLATE CLEAN. Ran across this place on my FB feed so thought we'd give them a try today. Small place, staff was friendly enough but the food was actually just fair and ok. Prices were higher than your usual Jalisco or Taqueria but that is probably just a sign of the times. We had the Carne Guisada plate and Fajita plate, meat was bland and needed more flavor. We used some pepper and salsa rojo to give it some flavor but if we had some Uncle Chris seasoning with us, that would've been better. They don't serve charro beans so we dove into the refried beans. Again, very bland so we added what we needed for add some flavor. Tortillas were ok, corn and flour, so those went well with the fajitas and beans. Rice really needed help, one portion was over cooked and hard (too much oil) but the other portion was was just so and lacking flavor. A bit of comino could have rescued it.... Overall, not worth the price of admission so we won't be back as we def have better options out there. Friendly staff isn't enough to bring us back for round 2. read more

We fell upon this restaurant thanks to IG, and all I can say is WOW. I have never had Barbacoa that tastes this good. Combine the perfectly tender, delicious, savory, yet somehow light barbacoa with homemade corn tortillas and great sauces, and you have one hell of a meal. The Barbacoa was so tender. Sometimes it can be fatty and weighed down in sauce, but this? Perfection. Don't change a thing. Please. If I lived here I would be here everyday. Let me start saying that their fresh homemade coffee "cafe de olla" was amazing best ever had on San Antonio this place is a Tortilleria which means homemade corn and flour tortillas everyday they have a variety of Corn White-Yellow and Red tortillas the last mentioned red tortillas is common used for the enchiladas. It's a new restaurant and they still working on their menu I went for breakfast and I was a bit disappointed they didn't had pancakes which I believe it should be a must for breakfast I ordered carne guisada with cheese and the guisada sauce was tasty and the meat was soft and delicious My daughter got Barbacoa Taco and ham and egg with cheese, the barbacoa wasn't dry like many places this barbacoa was great I was surprised it was really good Friendly service and very clean restaurant the Lady helping us was very friendly and helpful They had for sale the tortillas obviously and some chips their salsa is tasty and just enough spicy to enjoy your meals They also have a small variety of candy for your little ones We left with our bellies full and happy we surely will come back again read more

We came to try it based on a video on Facebook. The place was busy had to waited like 30 minutes to sit. Was not a fan of the wait. They sat us down it seemed like I had to keep eye contact with them to make sure they were aware I was still there a couple of other people that came after got sat before us (larger party). They sat us and the salsa needed flavor very bland. Ordered menudo, pozole, barbacoa and carnitas. The menudo was clean and cooked to good not chewy. However, everything needed salt a lot of salt for it to have a good flavor if not it was very bland. Would recommend if you are willing to use a lot of salt for it to be flavorful. read more

First thing the service was fine, even though we didn't get any chips. I saw this restaurant on Tic-Tok people were talking it up, so when my friend and I were going to lunch I suggested we go here. I got the Carne Guisada plate, my friend got the Barbacoa. The Carne Guisada was tough and had a strange red color didn't taste too good. My friend said the Barbacoa. Was more like pulled pork. Amazing food and service. We moved to San Antonio 2 years ago from further South and El Maizal Tortilleria brings the taste of home to San Antonio. The Menudo is seasoned just right it is delicious and savory. The barbacoa is delicious from the texture to taste, also the portion size of the tacos are very filling. We were visiting from out of town and stumbled across this place while looking for some good Mexican food. We received such amazing service from Sophia. We couldn't decide on what to eat so she recommended the menudo and pozole verde, both were so good! We also tried the Barbacoa tacos and I have to say that these topped everything on the menu! We recently moved from California and haven't been able to find a lot of good Mexican restaurants around us. Their Barbacoa tacos are the bomb. The tacos came loaded with meat plus you get cilantro and onions on the side Their green sauce is also a hit . They offer plates and tacos of all kinds . The place can be a little loud as the tortilla machine is cranking out house made corn tortillas but it is well worth it . read more
