Amazing tacos, friendly staff, fast service, nice place. It's my second time at this place today and absolutely love their food.

My partner and I always love going to Taco Max because the food is filling and delicious. Whenever we visit, we tend to go on late afternoons. Not a lot of customers are around, so service was quick and easy for us. Clean restaurant, menus were placed on the tables and you get to choose which table to sit in. Taco Dinners came out very quickly and very hot! Maybe we came in on an off day, but the rice was more bland than usual which is why this visit gets 4 stars. Seems like the prices went up too since we last visited, which we were bummed out about too. I ordered the 2 Taco Dinners for Arrachera (steak). I typically like ordering Al Pastor too but was craving steak. It was delicious and I like pairing it with the green salsa! My partner prefers the red salsa though, especially on the tortilla chips. This has been a go to place for the past 5 years and the last several visits we were very disappointed. The food came out in waves and none of it was even warm. We ordered an appetizer (queso fundido) which never came even after I asked about it twice. The server wanted to bring it after we were almost done eating which made zero sense. I cancelled it. My food (3 taco dinner) came out first and everything was cold. My Dad's breakfast skillet came out almost 10 minutes later and was cold and elements of the order were incorrect. I ordered stuff to go early enough and made it clear we wanted it ready when we were ready to leave. But it still wasn't ready 15 minutes after we were ready to leave and it was clear that part of the order was never put in until we were done eating. I would say the biggest problem is the service. The (same) server never writes anything down and has gotten it wrong numerous times. It makes absolutely no sense to not write down the order and even less sense not to have the food come out at the same time and be hot. The restaurant wasn't incredibly busy either. I know every restaurant has bad days, and I'm willing to let one bad day slide. Maybe even a couple. But this is now a pattern. I hate doing it but it's probably time to start searching for a new go to spot. I'm not sure the problem can be fixed. read more

We always loved Taco Max. But this experience did not meet the high expectations we've always had for them. First, the service was good as always, which was the highlight of our visit. The food was not up to their usual standards. I had a taco dinner with one Steak Taco and one Al Pastor Taco. The dinners comes with rice and refried beans. We also had an order of guacamole. Their meals always begin with chips and salsa. They were outstanding. The guac was kind of tasteless and watery. That was unfortunate. The tacos arrived not exactly cold, but not hot. While they tasted good, I wish they were warmer. The rice was not good - it was a series of clumped pieces of rice. The beans were okay. Ironically, they were warm when they arrived. There are so many good Mexican restaurants around Chicago. Taco Max has always been one of our favorites. We'll be back - I hope this was just an off day for them. I'm sure we'll be going to other Mexican restaurants for a while before we go back to Taco Max - and we will be back. I would expect to see an updated review sometime in the not so distant future. read more

When Taco Max says love at first bite they are not kidding. What a delicious steak torta--possibly the best one I have ever had and I've had many. It's the steak . It's seasoned and grilled to perfection. I loved it so much that I went back a couple of days later and it was just as good. I've since done sit in and the atmosphere is cozy, clean and casual. The service is also so quick and so friendly. You'll get complimentary chips and salsa. Take out is just as quick if you order online or over the phone. We went into the place for carry out and left with a good amount of food but looking at the receipt it felt like I'd paid for delivery and then some. This is now my second time ordering from this place!! I have to say, the first time I was impressed. This second time, I'm blown away! I got the arrachera torta both times, amazing! The green salsa goes so well with it!! My date got their steak tacos, also really good! We shared a garden salad, wow!!! Talk about a HUGE salad! We were both in shock by its size! The location on Elston has closed down, so we decided to try out this location. It really left a lot to be desired. The service was just okay. This is one of those places where you order upfront and then they bring you the food. I couldn't help but notice that when the food was brought over, it wasn't exactly hot. Which kind of gave the impression that the only thing fresh is the meat fish. Everything else tasted like it had been prepared earlier that day and was just sitting out. I ordered the deep fried tacos. That's something that you're really have to have fresh otherwise, it's all soggy. My meal was pretty inedible, I took two bites of my taco and was done. I made a mental note that I wouldn't be back. I did really enjoy the cucumber water/juice. It was pretty tasty and I ended up finishing that and taking another to go. The food, I left behind and didn't asked for it to be packed up. Lastly, this might just be a me thing. But they could consider wiping down the bottles every once in a while. The bottles of sauce are community style but when you touched them they were all slimy and sticky. Chips and salsa were good. An absolute banger for tacos. The portions are huge and full of flavor. Your food comes with chips and various salsas all of which are quite tasty. Everything on the menu was also super affordable. Staff was friendly and the restaurant is clean and updated. If you're planning on tipping, bring cash or use a debit card, their credit system doesn't allow for tips. Since I live down the street this will probably be my new regular taco spot! read more

I placed an order for two burritos at this location. One was supposed to have additional items with the beans removed, and the second burrito was to include everything as listed. When I arrived at my destination just five minutes later, I discovered that both burritos had the additional items and that everything else had been removed, which was not what I ordered. I immediately called the establishment to let them know about the mistake. John told me he would offer store credit. However, just five minutes later, I received a call saying they reviewed the cameras and claimed the burritos were made correctly. I explained that I still had the burritos and offered to bring them back so they could see the error for themselves, but they refused. I find it unacceptable that they were unwilling to verify the issue or make it right. I will not be returning, as this is not how customers should be treated. read more

We've always loved Taco Max for its consistently excellent food, and last night was no exception--though there were a few hiccups. The steak tacos were as delicious as always, and the portion sizes are a great value. However, the rice had peas and carrots that were still frozen, which was a bit odd. We're not sure why vegetables are used in the rice, as it doesn't seem to fit the dish. Additionally, the chips were unfortunately quite stale. Hopefully, this was just an off night for the kitchen. It wasn't inedible but it wasn't good. I was hungry to try something with good reviews here that I could order for delivery from the DD application. After some searching I found this place. It had decent reviews on DD and delivery prices were very cheap and when I cross-checked reviews on here also were good (4.5 out of 5). I ordered the three taco dinner and got the cucumber-lime drink people were talking about. The DD driver took forever to deliver though it was around rush hour and he got stuck behind a freight train. When I picked up the bag I saw that the drink was packaged horribly. It was in a plastic cup with a lid. However, it should have been wrapped with plastic or in a couple of plastic bags or something that wouldn't spill all over. All it was the plastic cup in a paper bag. Half of the drink was all over the food and everything in the bag holding everything. Thankfully the drink didn't seem to have gotten into the styrofoam container of food. Food seemed decently sized and prepared with decent ingredients. However, the taste just wasn't there. Been looking for a new burrito place since Mini Palapita closed down. Saw a review on TacoMax and wanted to try it out. Burrito was good, the arachera had a good taste. I ordered it with onion and cilantro instead of lettuce and tomato. Overall happy. Only issue was that it was soggy when i got it home and I think it had too much cheese. read more

Taco Max Mexican Grill is truly a hidden gem! I visited the restaurant around 9 p.m. on a Wednesday with two other people and we were instantly seated and helped. We ordered a Max Torta (a sandwich-like entree with a bean spread, cheese, potatoes and cabbage), a Pollo Burrito and two Lechon Tacos. The food was out within 10-15 minutes and was delicious! We ordered delivery from here and it was really good! I live near Pilsen so usually get my Mexican fix from there but this was comparable if not better than most spots! The sauces it comes with are super flavorful and there's a lot of options on the menu. There's an extensive breakfast Mexican menu that is served all day. We used to order from the Taco Max location on Elston probably once a week, so we were heartbroken (yeah yeah I know first world problems) when it closed. But the Montrose location is the same great food and not too much further away! We haven't eaten inside at this location, but regardless of takeout or delivery, the food is always ready super quick and the delivery driver is so nice. Highly recommend the veggie and fried fish tacos. Steak nachos are huge and delish! Choripan, also so good. My picky eater nieces and nephews love their quesadillas. Okay so there's nothing I don't like, even the burgers are amazing. But importantly, this is the best drunk meal you'll ever have, so keep Taco Max in mind after your next night out! read more

100% a hidden gem... WOW!!!! My husband took me here for lunch and OMG super impressed! My husband got the breakfast skillet and I got the 3 taco dinner. My Carne asada and al pastor tacos were top notch. The streak was actual steak, arrachera meat, not your fatty street tacos. And the al pastor was excellent. But the cochinita taco was my favorite.... The picketed onions and habanero sauce took this taco to a new level. Hands down, my new favorite place. read more

We came to this Taco spot randomly because this location is closer to my apartment then the Elston location. These tacos are one of the best tacos in Chicago. We get the fried fish tacos and the veggie tacos and they are simply full of flavor. I do not eat meat but I can imagine that they are delicious. Taco Max is the most reliable restaurant for take out. The person taking the phone order ALWAYS repeats the order back to you, so there's never a problem with getting anything wrong. And the food is delicious. I used to get their amazing torta milanesa before my diet. Now that I'm eating lighter, I get tinga tacos. SO good. The chicken is perfectly shredded and spicy.
