    4 Shrimp Tacos

Pretty good spot for tacos and other Mexican dishes. We ordered the enchiladas, shrimp tacos, and flautas. The enchiladas were a bit too salty, but the flavor was good. Flautas were really good and crunchy. Shrimp tacos were yummy! Side of rice and beans was also good and not mushy. Overall, looking forward to trying this place out again and trying things like their tortas and birria tacos which I've heard good things about.

Birria tacos were sooo good. A great place to stop by and right next to a gelato shop, PERFECT COMBINATION. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because I like my meat in the birria tacos a little softer. However flavor was AMAZING. Definitely recommend!

So, so yummy! This is exactly what I'm looking for when I want authentic tacos. Perfect size, deliciously seasoned, well priced. (Especially the shrimp tacos!) My family just moved in a few months ago and I think we found our new go-to for taco night. We love supporting small business and it's even better that they're so close to our home. We will be back again (and again and again).

These are by far my favorite shrimp tacos. We also ordered the guac & chips (such fresh crispy chips) and the shrimp burrito (delicious). The service was very friendly, and the food came out very quickly. Can't wait to come back here 10/10.

This spot is on my way home from work so I gave it a try a little while ago. I've only had their tacos and guac/chips and I've been very happy with both. I've continued to stop by for the shrimp tacos multiple times, they really are great and 4 for $10 is a decent deal. They're always freshly made, the pico de gallo and sauce on top of the taco is what really makes it super tasty. You also get the 2 hot sauces separately and I've been loving the green one (whatever it is), just spicy enough. Will definitely be coming back often.

Flavor was good but why was it not hot, not even warm! The guacamole tasted good and fresh. The tortilla chips were my fav kind so happy about that. I also got a burrito and again, disappointed. At least it was hot but like 75% rice, 25% protein. No cheese, no crema and no salsa like the menu says and I think there was a teaspoon of pico de gallo in there too. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant where they don't serve you salsa on the side or on the table, this was crazy. Positives, the tortilla was good and so was the rice, both seemed homemade. But come on - this totally ruined my first experience.

This was a pleasant stop. My top-tier chum and I came by this past Saturday around noon for some…read moremuch needed sustenance during the Montclair Town-wide Yard Sale (which I honestly thought was terrible - if you don't have kids, you were not finding much beyond moldy pogo sticks and tattered luggage sets. Dark times.). Apparently there was also a sidewalk sale going on in Upper Montclair so it was definitely on the crowded side when we wandered over but we were still able to secure parking about a block away. Deliciously uneventful. Despite the congestion in the surrounding area, Playa Taqueria wasn't too busy - there were a few people seated outside, but otherwise we were able to walk right up to the counter and order. My favorite part of this experience by far was that Playa let you kind of mix and match/build your own. I'm very picky when it comes to Mexican because I don't like crunchy shizzle in my food (which is kind of a calling card of the genre) so a lot of times I'm out once pico de gallo or whatever automatically gets involved. Despite several items not being to my liking in the official quesadilla description, I was able to pivot and order a very basic version of it, with just chicken, cheese and a guac add-on. (After making an enormous deal of ordering off menu, the woman behind the counter listened to my order, nodded slowly and said, "...so you want a chicken quesadilla." I may have blown the situation out of proportion.) The quesadilla was very good. It was definitely made to order, so it came out several minutes after my chum's meal (a bowl of nachos or something that was housed quickly). It's not a formal restaurant by any stretch so the disparate arrival times to me aren't a big deal, especially when you're getting a better quality meal being made right then and then. It was a LITTLE too cheesy for me (absolutely dictionary definition nitpick), and it's wild to me that queso is one of the typical ingredients in this dish; I can't even imagine the cheese overload in that scenario. But the chicken was very flavorful and I was pleased that the guac was a legit portion (an item in my experience where you really have to pull teeth to get more than a very small spoonful, even if you're already paying extra for it). The restaurant (at least the front end) was being handled by a handful of young women, all of whom were very nice. The one at the register who dealt with my order specifically deserves top marks for dealing with my high maintenance behavior capably and ably. I also didn't think the price point was too bad - the obvious chain comp for me would be something like a Bubakoo's, which is definitely a step or two below this and really greasy. I think you're getting better food for roughly the same cost, which I'll always take in a heartbeat. I can't recommend the Town-Wide Yard Sale this year, but I do recommend this place.

Folklore has nice taco options for vegetarians. The hibiscus (flower) taco with slaw was so good. It's flavorful and hearty, and a satisfying meat alternative. We also tried the mushroom-spinach tacos with onion and cilantro; next time I would try this one with the slaw or ask for hot sauce or something to spice it up because it's fresh and good, but it paled in compared to the flavors of the hibiscus tacos. It's fresh ingredients and you can tell they make an effort in preparing, so I would still give it a higher rating. My husband had the veggie burrito bowl. He said it was filling, but did not have a variety of veggies. I suspect that meat bowls are really good. It could have also been that we ordered towards the end of the night. He said next time, he would get the hibiscus from Folklore. Chips and guac were a good side to share. Freshly made and tasty. Also I liked how they were packed in a red and white plaid food boat

Here's what…read moreI ordered: Short rib tacos - weird that it had a sweet bbq sauce to it...not what I was expecting and no where does the description include it. It wasn't too bad but the fact that a piece of bone was in my tacos made it all the worse (pic included). From 3-stars to 2-stars. Avoid. Al pastor burrito - I just don't know why it tasted so dry. I tried rotating it so each bite would incorporate all the different components of the burrito but overall, just disappointing. Maybe not enough guac/pico? 3 stars Additionally, I asked for extra salsa but was only given the standard one small cup included with the tacos. Extra salsa would've helped on the burrito so not getting extra salsa was a bummer. Still looking for great Mexican food in the area...have yet to find it and this place most surely wasn't it. Without the snafus, I would rate this place 3 stars. But the bone fragment in my tacos + not providing extra salsa as requested...gotta drop it another star.
