Very expensive taco take out restaurant. We would give it 5 stars if it wasn't so expensive. If given a choice we'd go to a nice Mexican restaurant and spend the same amount. Now their food is good, they just charge for everything. It's also not enough food. We ordered a Mexican coke, burrito, Birria, and mango lemonade. Their mango lemonade was fresh and tasted amazing. I want to try all of their specialty drinks. The burrito was good and it's like a buffet line to choose your toppings for the burrito. It was very good. The Birria was good, but chewy and the cilantro cucumber topping was very mushy. I would not recommend. A great new spot with fresh food, but overpriced and not filling.

Stopped in thinking we were at Taco Bell and were very pleasantly surprised by the cheerful vibe and the group singing coming from back in the kitchen! It was packed at 8:15pm on a Saturday so that's a good sign! The guys were super helpful and patient in explaining the different options. Most meals are a flat $10.99 and you pick your protein and toppings. Great variety of sweet drinks. The mango lemonade was very refreshing! I got the steak bowl with rice, cheese, beans and lettuce. Such flavor in the steak and the cheese was nice and soft. My husband had the shredded chicken burrito and he said it was 'fresh and beautiful!' The owner, Danny, made sure to introduce himself at the register and made us feel special. The sweet young lady brought out a big cup of sour cream when I asked. She made sure my husband had a big glass of water when she saw he hadn't ordered a drink. Even the guy sweeping up asked if we needed anything after we had been sitting for a while. Such a cool spot! Go there!

Stopped by with a few friends for the one year anniversary. Food was great and service on point. They even had face painting and a bounce house for the kiddos.

Awesome food and great atmosphere. Three people got three different means and everyone enjoyed it.

Food was great. Limited selections though. And we felt the prices were a bit high, especially for the area.

I was torn between four and five stars, I went with five to demonstrate my good faith in that I can't say anything about the taste, it really was delicious. But the portion size was...unexpected. My wife and I ordered a dinner for two and I picked up a large aluminum platter and was excited. But it's a small portion for two people. We both laughed that we're going to need food later. I think we demolished it in 15 minutes, lol. I'm also glad I picked up those yummy looking rice crispy treats for dessert. We had the chicken, steak and shrimp platter- Mar y Tierra. The chicken and steak were very thin, and then three shrimp. So we awkwardly looked at each other for who gets to have two shrimp, lol! ( It was me!) again, it was all delicious. anyway, considering the amazing value and price, the proteins weren't the issue. I mean, yes, I think having four shrimp makes sense when you're serving a dinner "for two," but I don't know if you can tell from the picture, it was the tiniest portion of rice and beans, etc. Those things are so cheap! The amount of rice & beans and macaroni salad, etc. on this platter would be standard for a single entrée serving anywhere else. There was one jalapeño pepper grilled for us to share. It was the most delicious thing... We had to share a single pepper? Why only two green onions? Again grilled and delicious... adding two more green onions would have been perfect. thankfully I am gluten-free, so she had the large tablespoon of macaroni salad to herself. I can't imagine those eyeballs we would give each other if we'd have to split up this bite of macaroni salad, lol! we're going to order the grande platter next time, hoping we will get a bigger portion of side dishes, that one has 7 proteins instead of three. I'll let you know...

La Maya did not disappoint! The ambience is dimly lit, and perfect for a romantic dinner. On the cocktails side, I tried "Señor Sal" - a dirty martini / Vesper riff featuring their proprietary gin and vodka, dry vermouth, pickled jalapeño, olive brine, and lemon infused olive oil. It was a visually attractive, delicious, and sturdy cocktail. Just what the doctor ordered! Later I tried the house margarita. It was balanced and refreshing. There are options to add flavorings to the house margarita spec for +$2 (e.g., Matcha Coconut, Spicy, Guava Mint, Caramelized Pineapple). My dinner companion tried the caramelized pineapple and loved it. On the culinary side, the guacamole was fresh and flavorful. For an entree, I selected the Carne Nortena - a tequila-marinated ribeye with sauteed scallions, shisito peppers. The steak was cooked perfectly to temperature (medium-rare) and amazingly juicy. The roasted sweet potato wedges (Camote) were also outstanding. Don't forget dessert - the coconut flan was to die for! Service - I believe our server's name was Alex, was on-point. He was knowledgeable about both the food and beverages, and did not rush us. Thank you La Maya for a great evening. I will definitely return.

cute neighbors spot with great mexican food!…read more my friend and i made a reservation for 8p on cinco de mayo -- we did not realize it was cinco de mayo until we were on our way over to the restaurant, and it was crazy packed. even with a reservation, we had to wait for a table. we were seated outside initially, despite our reservation for an inside table. we did request to move inside since it was cold and windy outside, and our waiter jose told us it would take 20 more minutes. we were at the restaurant for over an hour by the time we were finally seated inside. once inside, our orders were quickly taken, and the food came out quickly. at that point, we were starving -- coming here on cinco de mayo was a mistake. the food here is excellent. the tacos al pastor were some of the best tacos i've had. the pork was so juicy and flavorful. the drinks (horchata & jamaica) were also packed with flavor and tasted incredibly authentic. the elote was delicious as well, and i enjoyed how much pulpo/octopus was on the menu. there were so many other things i wanted to try! our waiter jose was also very sweet. he apologized for the delay in getting seated, and you could tell they were working really hard to get through the rush. i would not come back on cinco de mayo, but i would definitely recommend this spot for a casual dinner.

I'd been reading a lot about El Mictlan and it's authenticity, so a friend and I popped by for…read moredinner over the fall/winter. It's pretty deep in South Philly, definitely off the beaten path. For as much press as it's been getting recently, it wasn't too busy (it was a week night) in hte restaurant. There is a decent bit of seating without feeling crammed, and the ambience is on theme with the cuisine. They are BYOB, so I brought a mocktail for us to enjoy with our meals. Service was solid - our server gave us good advice on the menu. We started off with the guac, which was delightful. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of charred serranos alongside the avos, and the homemade chips were the perfect vehicle for the dip. We split the spicy Camohtli, which wasn't too spicy and with perfectly crispy potatoes. The seasoning fit the dish nicely. I'm not an overall potato lover, but this was a unexpected tasty dish. We lastly split a special for the night, tacos with squash, corn, and pomegranate seeds. I was disappointed in the number of vegetarian tacos, but I was glad that this one was on special. I liked all the ingredients separately, and together on the taco, they went together well enough, but something was missing. Perhaps another spice or sauce? That would have taken this dish over the top! Prices at El Mictlan were quite reasonable, and the BYOB nature certainly helps a lot too. I was overall pleased with my meal there, but I would be intrigued to try other menu options (I am not vegetarian, so would like to try other taco offerings) to understand all the recent hype!
