Great authentic Mexican restaurant, which is hidden in a small ally just off Main Street in Riverhead. The restaurant is more of a walk-up spot, which you can choose to eat there or take out. There's no wait staff. For lunch, we started with the guacamole, which was nice and fresh and had a nice kick. We then split a steak chimichanga and chicken taco bowl. Here's another out-of-order review for me. That means nothing to you, the reader of these words, but for me it just shows that I: a) forgot I never reviewed Taco Bout It b) realized I needed to review Taco Bout It...now You see I've only been to this tiny taco spot twice with my female amiga and both times were outta this tortilla world. The first instance passed by so quickly I never had a chance to type up my tasty love for this place, but the thoughts of going back definitely didn't dwindle. It wasn't until a few weeks ago when we finally returned, in hopes of having a similar experience. Check! Before I jump into the deliciousness of this place, I have to mention the decor. Seriously, TBI is not big, but there is such a Mexican/Spanish vibe all over the place. The piñatas and pictures and the ceiling that looks like a festive night sky is just perfect. Outside is more of the same as the small walkway feels like you're on vacation, definitely anywhere other than Riverhead. Just close your eyes and you might think you're in Mexico! Okay now for the important stuff: comida (food). First time around the two of us ordered way too much. Why? Well the portion sizes are pretty hefty, especially if we're talking loaded nachos (more on those in a sec). Other than that chip fest, a chorizo taco and a fresh and tasty chicken tamale rounded out meal uno. That was a while back, but like I said, we hoped for much of the same on this recent trip. Armed with the knowledge that we didn't want to order too much (and that we were having lunch, not dinner this time), we went for just the nachos...well, and I couldn't turn down the opportunity to get a chorizo taco again. Their chorizo has a little zing and plenty of flavor. It's high quality which doesn't always occur at other Mexican spots (not all chorizo is created equal). Throw a little spicy salsa on their from the salsa bar and you'll be smitten just like me. Now for those loaded nachos. They're piled high with queso, mozzarella, jalapeños, onion, guacamole, and your choice of meat (go for the chicken; it's mouth-wateringly delicious). Refried beans are also part of the mix, but we chose to nix those both times (to each his own). Regardless of bean action, these nachos will definitely be a staple anytime we go (which is hopefully again soon!). Overall, Taco Bout It has some legit Mexican grub. I may have only talked about a few food options, but the menu has plenty to choose from and the taste/quality stayed consistent after months (maybe more than a year?) between visits. If you find yourself in Riverhead, you gotta hunt down Taco Bout It because no matter what review you have to write next, this will end up being the next one. read more

i gotta give it 5 stars for the tacos. full of flavor - had a chicken, beef and pork taco - hard shells. the "front desk" needs a bit of work though. walked in to place a to go order. there was no one at counter. someone who i believed to be a server was moving tables around but did not acknowledge us or offer help. finally someone came out of kitchen and also barely acknowledged us. i asked if i could get an order to go and he didn't seem that happy about it. i shared what i wanted, with choice of toppings on each. there was an obvious language barrier and he handed me a piece of paper and pen. i wrote my order down very clearly. what i got was not what ordered at all - but it was still delicious. read more

It's a cute looking place. The owner is not welcoming at all though, no "hello, what can I get for you?", just stares at you until you order. Ordered a chicken taco bowl, gave me a beef taco bowl and I have a severe allergy to red meat. Told him I asked for chicken and he told me "you said beef" when I clearly said chicken and it also said chicken on our receipt. Remade the bowl, the chicken looked grey and as I started eating it I noticed it was extremely spicy. I couldn't finish it because it was too spicy and it tasted a bit strange to me. Would much rather just go to chipotle for a somewhat decent taco bowl. Then at the end of the dinner I noticed a roach crawling on the floor near our table. I wish I could show my Yelp followers an image of amazing food in tacos. Unfortunately I couldn't get any service. Please spare me a shortage of employees in the world right now. I literally stood there for about 20 minutes and the guy looked me dead in the face and didn't even greet me, or say give him a few minutes. There was one couple a head of us who was already sitting and complaining about how long it was taking for their two burritos. So clearly there is a problem with service here. Maybe one day if I'm in the area I will try to go again they were essentially located right on Main Street which was nice and it was small enough what plenty of seating. Found this cute little local taco joint while visiting town and I felt like it a one-man shop. The man took our order and cooked our food fresh, so you gotta be patient. The taco bowl and tacos were in generous portions and it was pretty good overall! It just reminded me of Mexico with the colorful seating inside and outside and it's rare to find lengua at many taco spots I visited so this is def a plus! read more

This was such a gem of a find!! I enjoyed the decor inside as it was very bright and cohesive with the Mexican culture. I stopped in on a whim seeing how good the reviews are and when looking at the menu, stumbled upon the taco de lengua (cow tongue taco) and the fish taco. I also decided to order the chicken tortilla soup. The taco de lengua particularly caught my interest because I've had my mom's but none in restaurants compare (lack of seasoning, etc.). I went for the cow tongue taco first and I was pleasantly surprised by how well-seasoned and well-prepared it was! It was delicious from beginning to end. The fish taco was also delicious and well-paired with guacamole. The chicken tortilla soup was also delicious as it wasn't thick but light and I could tell the soup was fresh. I hate to be that person. My goal is not to make the ratings go down, but to speak truth. Things I liked: presentation, location, the fact that their queso is not nacho cheese and actually a white queso, unique drinks, and the unique chips. I had a steak chimichanga that was delicious when it came out it look like a giant puff pastry or a hot pocket of some sort it was so nice. The giant chimichanga came with chips and they have homemade hot sauce to go along with it. I also ordered some plantains sliced nice and thin and they were perfect. Popped in after a visit to the Aquarium down the road. It appears to be fairly new. No alcohol yet but the food was very good. The steak taco bowl was packed full of all the delicious ingredients you would expect. Steak, rice, beans, guacamole and crema (sour cream). The chicken, steak and chorizo tacos were perfect. No need to add to many ingredients. They have a salsa bar with a 6 different flavors. I didn't try any because, like I said, the tacos were delicious "as is." The staff was very friendly and helpful. We were starving and ordered a lot of stuff from the menu , but The counter person suggested we take a few items off and wait to see if we were still hungry after. On work-related travel in Riverhead, NY, I had a serious hankering for tacos...not Taco Bell tacos, real tacos. Real tacos are surprisingly difficult to find, so when this place popped up on Yelp, I was all in. To start off, this restaurant seemed hard to find. Because of the way the strip of businesses and there's only a sign that blends in with the background, it definitely seems elusive, but I did eventually find it. Ordering is simple, it's done from the counter when you walk in, Since there aren't any servers or anything like that, there really isn't any service to rate, but the food was definitely awesome! I had a chorizo, steak, and shrimp taco and they were all perfectly prepared and super flavorful. I had to seriously resist the urge to order more even though I definitely wanted to. The reason for the four stars instead of five is because they only accept cash and didn't have fountain drinks. This is a solid middle of the road restaurant. I ordered a steak burrito with pico de Gallo on the side, chicken taco, and churros. I also got a Squirt to wash it down. Let me first say that's what I ordered but that is NOT what I got. I got a quesadilla which I didn't order. Nevertheless, the food was great. In fact, it was awesome. 4.8/5 on the food. Everything was fresh even the chips. The churros were piping hot. The problem I had wasn't with the foo. It's with the staff. I walk in and the staff member is literally staring at the wall. Doesn't look up and doesn't say hi. There's no menu. Had to ask and the guy pushed a paper menu an inch over to me. I told this man my order and I got something completely different. Either he hates his job or he is depressed or both but the service was absolutely terrible. It was also so hot inside that I had to eat outside and it's only May. I ordered a veggie burrito for $11 and asked for them to not put sour cream or cheese on it. I wanted guac added which on the menu says it's $1. He charged me $14 (which seemed correct for what I asked for) and when I bit into it, there was no guac (which I made clear that I wanted guac by repeating myself, incase he didnt hear), barely any veggies and all rice. It had zero flavor. I told him I asked for guac and I was charged for it, he told me he never charged me and that a veg burrito is $13... no sir, it says $11 right on the menu. He gave me a side or guac that was in the smallest container I have ever seen. Smaller than something you'd put ketchup in at mcdonalds. Definitely don't recommend this place. Not sure why I see so many bad reviews about this adorable taco place. We saw it from the back parking lot and decided to give it a shot. The exterior is brightly rainbow painted and has a beautiful alleyway. The interior is also decorated with bright colors and there's Mexican hats you can wear while visiting. It was $5 happy hour and we got Sangrias packed full of fruit. We also got the tacos, cheese quesadilla and fried calamari. All $5 each. A decent amount of food for a low price. The calamari was mixed with fried peppers and it was a large amount for $5. The tacos were made with all dark meat. We definitely will come again. Cute place. This place was a huge disappointment. We visited on a Saturday evening. First off, there was only one employee working. He takes your order, takes the phone orders, makes the food and also takes your payment. It's unbelievable that a place with such wonderful reviews and Newsday awards, only has one employee working, especially on a Saturday!! Secondly, they have a few tables inside and outside but don't offer table service. So after we placed our order, we sat outside, but had to clean our table because it was gross. But then again, how can you expect it to be clean when there's a one man crew running the entire operation. After waiting for about half an hour, our food finally arrived, it was alright, the chicken and the steak were a little salty, the guacamole was watery.
